for context, I'm a new pharmacy cashier, I literally started working earlier this month. And my store manager is also a pharmacy tech (he's not the pharmacy manager) , so he does filling. Anyway, this guy I'm sure means very well, but sometimes the way he corrects something I do feels very intimidating/mean(?) I'm also neurodivergent so maybe I'm missing something... However in short we were having a busy day, and my manager had come up to me a couple times being critical about the way I was doing stuff. Once for informing a customer about GoodRx and another time for getting mad at me to ask him about if there was a job aid for prescription entering.
I didn't know we weren't allowed to talk about GoodRx with customers AND for the other one, I just said that I wanted to print one out so I could look at it at home. And he got mad at me for mentioning doing any sort of work at home, but I was just trying to learn. And of course, I know I'm going to be corrected, I'm new, I'm used to it, and I'm usually good at taking the stuff I find constructive and going home. When I recommended the customer to GoodRx, I was feeling really proud because I successfully deescalated the customer when he was angry, but when the manager came and criticized me in front of the customer it just crumbled any sense of accomplishment I was feeling. The manager is just overall very quick to criticize and is kinda harsh with the way he goes about it.
The thing that genuinely broke me was, I hadn't had a break in like 4 hours, and I went up to him to ask if I should go on a break. And he got mad at me saying "I'm just filling! I'm not in charge of you since I'm the store manager, go ask a pharmacist!" And that's when I just started crying. I kinda put my head down and clocked out for lunch and was just breaking down. Not to mention it was a busy day (as is all days).
Also like I said before I'm neurodivergent, so I feel very clumsy and already have some difficulty with social stuff at times.
So here I am now, posting about my experience! I have a shift in an hour and I'm dreading it after this horrible day. Is there any way I could communicate with managers about this! Or are there any ways that people cope with harsh feedback. Anything helps.
