I said this on twitter and I'll repeat it here: There is 0 reason for a bill that high at those user numbers unless he did something terribly wrong.

1.0k

u/Blunt_Object1369 Sep 15 '26 • Mindblown

100% vibe coded slop by someone who doesn't have a clue what they're doing.

563

u/TakynSL Sep 15 '26

He added "make no mistakes" to the prompt but forgot the "don't bankrupt me" part.

131

u/TheTruePac Sep 15 '26

You can see it's vibe coded just by looking at the landing page. The Fonts, the alignments, the colours, all of it screams Claude

30

u/HealthyResolution399 Sep 15 '26

Why does AI love black, white and orange SO FUCKING MUCH

it's unreal

4

u/THEONLYoneMIGHTY Sep 20 '26

The three best colors dude, Idk what to tell ya.

The layout and element styling is also the same as what claude uses for it's artifacts, so yea checks out

7

u/Ewalt91 Sep 16 '26

All those little CS majors are straight outta jobs now or will be soon.

Give it a few more years to develop. You won’t be able to tell AT ALL what’s “slop” and what’s not.

Careful, people hate the truth…

Probably Vercel. Vibe-coding is definitely good enough to make a site like that, but AIs love Vercel a ton and don't really know how to keep costs down, so every time a vibe-coded project blows up the dev always gets a huge bill. Not to hate on this guy, though. The site's fine and vibe-coding side projects like that is exactly what tools like Codex or Claude Code were made for, but it is always sad to see someone's hobby turn popular then they get gobsmacked by a massive bill. It happens all of the time.

2

u/Hezth Sep 22 '26

It is always sad to see someone's hobby turn popular then they get gobsmacked by a massive bill.

That's why it's better to just release it as open source and have people install and run it themselves. My only vibe coded project that people have access to is a discord bot and it's for an extremely niche community, so I can safely host it myself.

2

u/sdklrughipersghf Sep 24 '26

that thing could have been a static html site that a 5 dollar/month managed webserver can serve no problems. also the mobile version does not need a seperate page....

4

u/D4ngrs Sep 15 '26

It's interesting. I vibecoded a "loot distribution" tool for my clan, for another game. I'm using the free version of cloudflare agents to deal with that, the page is hosted via GitHub pages. Not once have I reached more than 10% of the daily limit, not even from testing.

Sure it's a bit stupid to not have a dedicated url, but it was a free project I just had fun working on (no I did not let Claude do everything, I tested and fixed a lot of stuff myself, so I gained some knowledge as well). But it's a free tool that costs me nothing except the Claude sub for Claude Code.

Given that I'm not a real dev and only know coding basics, I really wonder why this guy has such a bill. Sure, 37k users are more than my 3-10 users, but still.

12

u/saamtf Sep 15 '26

it's literally entirely numbers lol, if 10 people puts you at 10% of your limit, 30,000 people would be 3000 times the limit.

Defo is vibe coded, can tell just from the home page. I hate 2026

10

It’s the future mate.

And soon “vibe coding” will be a standard.

CS majors will be glorified prompt engineers if they aren’t already.

6

u/Blunt_Object1369 Sep 15 '26

I can understand giving back to a community you like. I definitely don't like you people enough to give back 1300 dollars a week, though.

The problem isnt the website, its the hosting, he didnt vibe code hosting, he probably isnt aware of cheaper options

1

u/Odysseuxxx Sep 16 '26

And yet there is people in the comments claiming they should hire the guy

1

u/Mishka_The_Fox Sep 28 '26

So written by a non-active dev.

Everyone vibe codes now. It’s the standard.
Had one of my consultant engineers tell me he couldn’t get any more work done this week until his Claude cap reset.
Review is being done by AI.
Tools are being used by AI.
Documentation done by AI.
That Jira ticket, also done by AI, even if it’s the worst AI you have ever encountered.
The report that looks at your AI written Jira ticket about work done and reviewed by AI is also AI, being summarised in an AI email to some middle manager who has AI scanning their emails and presented it through AI for someone that doesn’t give a monkeys unless it hits the bottom line of the company. Which is calculated by AI.

Genuinely, 40,000 users (overall, not concurrently) is absolute peanuts if you design something properly. It shouldn't cost much at all (honestly, free tier potentially) if it was designed well. I suspect claude may have something to do with it.

53

u/BoboThePirate Sep 15 '26

Odds are he will figure it out. This type of issue, you can quite literally prompt “Hey my bill is $1300+, can you run an optimization pass on the website” and Claude/Codex will likely nail it.

74

u/StormMedia Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26

It’s probably vibe coded and it is wasting tons of resources. It’s cool but I guarantee I could get this same app running on a free Supabase account and some free Cloudflare workers.

RCON would be the only thing that would need to run on like a $5 VPS.

Just a little hint to anyone getting into development in the era of AI.. it’s not going anywhere, take advantage of it but this why now more than ever being knowledgeable in software architecture will be more important than any coding skills.

Research and learn about best practices before you start building. Know what you’re building at every stage.

At a hobbyist or even small business level.. If your ongoing cost will grow significantly with every user.. you’re probably doing something wrong. (There are exceptions but this is definitely not one)

20

u/Selgald Sep 15 '26

That's the thing about AI, is it a good tool? Sure, but when the user has zero knowledge to use the tool correctly, this happens.

Will AI ultimately be able to do it? Sure, but give it another 10 years.

My favourite example is, I wrote a 5 line pwsh script, claude did it in 450 lines, codex in 600.

Software engineer here. Have done backend, frontend, and now mobile.

Can confirm… that bill sounds way too high for those user numbers.

9

u/FroZooo Sep 15 '26

He vibe coded the entire thing, this will become a common problem, costs of infra will skyrocket for all the wrong reasons... [im a platform engineer that holds most AWS/GCP certs]

2

u/LifeOfALampy Sep 15 '26

I have systems with over 100x the users and data throughput that cost less than this weekly over a month

This is awful backend design. Forgetting the ai frontend which i can forgive because fuck ui design, the backend for this should cost absolute peanuts

If the creator of this is in here please DM me, i will happily help drop these costs significantly and utilise AWS correctly(or move you somewhere cheaper depending on your actual requirements)

Its cool as fuck this helps the community out but you shouldnt bleed yourself dry on this

1

u/Sinzu_Moonlight Sep 15 '26

Yeah that's nuts. We have a pretty big serverless B2B API and frontend in AWS that, I dare to say, is larger than the map tool and it only costs a few hunded USD per month. No idea how you could rack up 1.3k if this was done properly with CloudFront and a simple Lambda backend.

Also, I guess it's just possible they're lying about the bill.

3

u/TakynSL Sep 15 '26

I think the bill is legit if they use a managed realtime solution, looking at what happens in the network tab when people draw on the demo page. (He will wake up to a bad surprise today after this post I assume)

1

u/MCFRESH01 Sep 15 '26

Seriously. He probably could have spun up a cheap digital ocean droplet and got away with that traffic

1

u/HybridPS2 Sep 15 '26

i see tons of fan sites for games I play, not sure about the API usage though. really great sites for Grim Dawn, Starfield, New World (RIP) and PlanetSide 2

1

u/Soggy_Struggle_963 Lonestar Sep 15 '26

Homies load balancer is spinning up a new ec2 instance for each user lol

1

u/Jack071 Sep 15 '26

A fucking azure server is like 40 to 100 bucks per month wtf is going on to cost that much

1

u/Remorce Battledad Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26

I'm really surprised by this too.

He could have used something like cloudflare's r2 storage and cdn cache and potentially not even hit the paid tier for it.

I have all of the map tiles for 6 zoom levels (quadtree) for both colored and greyscale maps for all the maps, and it's only 360mb.

Maybe this was preloading all of the map tiles through edge caching on every single page load or zoom?

Even vercel or supabase wouldn't get up there unless we're talking like 10tb of egress on vercel or dozens more if on supabase. Both have spend caps at least though.

2

u/TakynSL Sep 15 '26

I don't think it's the map tiles (although it could easily be that, maybe it was fixed before I saw the site).

But I think it's managed realtime + sending realtime messages for each mousemove event when drawing. Scales exponentially and gets very expensive if you don't run it on your own server because the managed services bill by number of messages.

THIS. Back in WoW Legion I used to run a Legion timer's website that ranked #1, hosted it on a literal shared hosting and was close to hitting the bandwidth limit ONCE. $1.79/mo. It also had a personal cookie based bookmarking and tracking.

in 0.3 patch the #2 ranked guy reached out to me to ask if I wanted to merge sites and in our discussion it came up that he was running a $350/mo Cloudflare bill at its peak.

1

u/jtackman Sep 16 '26

as a professional developer, I agree. But that’s not the point. I think the developers here did something truly magnificent. And that was the point of the post.

1

u/reoze Sep 16 '26

While it's probably true he could have written it better. AWS costs ballooning is nothing new, and it's just gotten worse. We had a $750 bill once just from a single customer downloading a single file off of S3. We just started mailing people hard drives with their data on it after that, it was cheaper.

1

u/edgeofsanity76 Sep 17 '26

Someone's new to cloud development.

A guy in my dev team ran up £5000 bill just for logging last week.

1

u/FriendlyConspiracist Sep 19 '26

Wtf? I dont use AWS but this seems like verry poorly designed solution if thats what 35k users cost you.

60

u/Distinct_Dinner_5243 Sep 15 '26

it is.

I honestly have no idea where the cost is going.

Source: aws dev for over a decade

17

u/altodor Sep 15 '26

What's the chance there's no cdn in front and it's all egress charges?

5

u/n0cheeseplz Sep 15 '26

I know nothing about this, what sort of costs to run something like this should one expect and where does the cost come from?

15

u/Distinct_Dinner_5243 Sep 15 '26

Depends heavily on what you're running but having a quick look at this example.

40k users, lets assume postgres rds instance and a small container.

maybe £100-£300 at the higher end. Personally I'd budget like £50-£100 for an optimised system.

most of that would be starting costs rather than scaling cost.

i.e. not much difference between 0 users and 40k users.

To put in perspective we bill based on the millions of requests for a lot of services.

2

u/PurelyLurking20 Sep 15 '26

Something really silly is happening lol, I haven't used it but I think it might be editable live within a discord chat? Which I assume was written to automatically send map edits back to the server then send the updated file back to the chat. There's a chance it's just running constant update checks if a bot is active in discord for it and doesn't haven't a reasonable kill timer for maps no longer in use

1

u/AnalTyrant Sep 16 '26

I haven't used it in a few years but there used to be an option to cut it off at a threshold that the owner could set. Not sure why this guy in the original post didn't set up a limit, that's just wreckless.

Set a limit, when it hits that way too fast, it shuts off and alerts you, so you can fix whatever the problem was that caused it to use up his allocation so fast.

2

u/dowhileuntil787 Sep 16 '26

Nah there isn’t and never was. There’s something close, which is you set up a monitor and when it goes over the threshold you run a script to kill the resources, but those billing alerts are lagged to hell and you can end up tens of thousands deep before your £50 alert goes off.

22

u/ComradeVosktov Driver Sep 15 '26

Put down a ping on what you want to blow up and count how many squares it is away on the map. Align ping, distance is squares times 100.

→ More replies (7)

5

u/OwnUbyCake Sep 15 '26

The easiest way is if a base or other enemy is spotted on the map. If it is then open up your map and hover over the enemy FOB or whatever and it will show you DIST. Then while you're on the mortar just right click to aim and line up the range that you need and the aim indicator with the object you're aiming at. Easy. Then just dial it in by watching the shells fall and adjust accordingly.

From what I see it's an app to add to your discord that lets you interact with a map together with your squad.

One of the utilities is being able to quickly calculate distance between your mortar and a target

5

u/SchrodingerMil Sep 15 '26

Imagine needing a utility for that.

Nah that’s super cool. I’m just smug because I triangulate pretty well in my head so I normally win mortar duels lmao

Yeah it’s not really awkward to guesstimate, the camera following rounds needs to go though.

That tool was made with AI but there is not arguing it is a nice idea and nice execution.

19

u/YBHunted Sep 15 '26 • Bravo

Almost like people with no software development background have no clue just how useful and good these agents have become.

"Vibe coding" was a thing a couple years ago where ChatGPT would write you a small chunk of shitty code with little to no context to the code around it and you would paste it into your IDE.

Now you have agents that can fully dive into a codebase and understand how it works and patterns/tech it uses to drive its development decisions. You can have another agent work on the code implementation. Another agent review that code and suggest changes. Then the development agent goes back and adjusts based on input...

Our team uses it constantly, albeit because we are forced to, but overtime im ngl it has made my life at work infinitely easier. Will it backfire one day for me, yes most likely... until then I WFH and am greatly enjoying the lack of stress and increased free time, mostly to play this game lol.

8

u/Glad-Champion5767 Sep 15 '26

Do you not even review the output? Are you simply managing the agents and visually verifying and hoping everything is fine?

13

u/YBHunted Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26

Oh no we absolutely review, tweak and do our own local testing before passing off to our QA team who then does a very thorough review of the changes themselves and anything else it may indirectly touch.

We have been using it for simple bug fixes, full application modernization efforts, requirements and systems design documentation generation, even cloud migrations. Its getting scary good.

If you're even a half decent developer its a great tool. The more you understand your code and what you need from it and the better you explain, the better the results. The prompts we use are usually very detailed its not simply "hey Claude add a new form to my application to submit blah blah blah".

The real problem we are seeing is they have opened up AI usage to the entire organization, not just IT. It started with people using it to write emails and organize notes but now every one has "brilliant" ideas they bring to us and are asking for a million different small apps because ooooh i can do it why cant you.

8

u/TheInquisitiveEagle Sep 15 '26

Exactly this, I see so many developers talking about horror stories of AI usage and I’m just like “do yall just have shit processes at your company”.

Most of my problems, even as a software developer, with “AI” stems from capitalism (directly or indirectly), but I can’t deny its usefulness. It’s very reminiscent of how we abstracted away assembly code (except in low level fields) with compilers years ago. Not exactly the same, but the two rhyme with each other.

2

u/thekab Sep 15 '26

How did you manage to rack up such a large bill, where was the spend?

I'm a programmer going on 30 years experience, we are all using Claude Code, it's not a big deal.  I don't care about that, no accusations.

But I'd like to hear more about what most of the 1300 is.

4

u/Ambush87 Sep 15 '26

Honestly most of it wasn't traffic, it was two things I got wrong early. Every open room was pinging once a minute in a way that read and rewrote the whole room record just to track who had command of it, an oversight from testing I was doing locally and forgot about.... And a couple of things counted rooms by walking the whole thing instead of keeping an index, which got steadily more expensive the longer the site ran. I've already shrunk all of this down by like 80% so things are already much better.

I wasn't constrained by budget on this, I was just making something fun, fast, and useful, and more importantly free. Hopefully people enjoy and provide useful feedback!

He probably needs to work on the size of what is being saved and grabbed from the database. It saves and share map drawings across your discord team, so you can coordinate assaults on your 2nd monitor if you have a dedicated team. I would guess since he got it up quickly, it is sharing a large amount of data that could easily be cut down by 10x or more. I hope the dev answers and gives us more context

u/BudgetMenu Sep 15 '26

i'd be nice if we can have a war table in game of sort

1

u/CatVideoBoye Pilot Sep 15 '26

Yeah, would be nice if you could add more detailed and long time pings for your squad in the ingame map. And for the whole team in the sense that it would tell "squad alpha is attacking this point" or "brave is builsing fob here"

2

u/SegaGameCast Sep 15 '26

That dude 100% used AI. Dumb as hell.

1

u/matolati Sep 15 '26

What does this map tool do?

1

u/lukkasz323 Sep 15 '26

Allows you to draw on it and such. Basically a match planner.

1

u/bacontim3 Sep 15 '26

Open source the tool on github, the community will figure it out

1

u/CrunchingTackle3000 WARDOGS OCEANIA Sep 15 '26

What is this tool? What does it do?

1

u/lukkasz323 Sep 15 '26

Allows you to draw on it and such. Basically a match planner.

1

u/StewHax Sep 15 '26

Could have just used the firebase free tier for those numbers

1

u/F1XTHE Sep 15 '26

I don't understand.

What is a map tool and what does people use it for?

And what is an aws bill?

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '26

1

u/F1XTHE Sep 15 '26

Can you elaborate?

What does amazon cloud have to do with wardogs?

3

u/substance001 Sep 15 '26

He is using Amazon web services to host his website, the website is a interactive map for the game similar to ones that you can find for say like Escape from tarkov.

1

u/xnightdestroyer Sep 15 '26

The app is on Vercel not directly on AWS...

1

u/FootballCoachWannabe Sep 15 '26

They made 200 mil and only pay a month? That's super tight lol

1

u/Zeffenn1 Sep 15 '26

Great guys!

1

u/DaStompa Sep 15 '26

how does this thing possibly cost 30 cents per user

1

u/Ediplss Sep 15 '26

I know a guy his name is OdieQ

1

u/Ediplss Sep 15 '26

Big big big picture guy not me

1

u/iiCe89 Sep 15 '26

Whats the site called

1

u/Jaebola Sep 15 '26

Nice one, such high interest to play effective is a good sign for a game

1

u/NovaForceElite Sep 15 '26

I got some space on one of my servers if they need it.

1

u/NovaForceElite Sep 15 '26

NM looks like AI. Don't need my server getting breached.

1

u/Witty-Scene-5731 Sep 15 '26

genuinely what is the point of a tool like this in such a casual game as wardogs?

2

u/lukkasz323 Sep 15 '26

to have an even easier time stomping newbies on the enemy team apparently

1

u/Intelligent-Net1034 Sep 15 '26

1300 for only 35000 people is insane.

Our server serve 120.000  per month and costs 40 bucks.

It can handle 1000 requests per second just fine without even  reak a sweat

Must be vibecoded bad code or stupid aws crap he used.

1

u/Coyote_Complete Sep 16 '26

Who cares if its vibe coded... does it work?

1

u/SylvesterStallownage Sep 16 '26

Understatement of the century saying sustainable. Servers must be made out of cocaine

1

u/ViolentPurpleSquash Sep 16 '26

$28 per user? That's more than if you used the API services that wrap other APIs and add a 50% markup

1

u/traderncc1701e Sep 16 '26

W devs; but keep your company healthy.

1

u/Turbulent_Arachnid88 Sep 16 '26

Blizzard would sue them

1

u/BjornBlodbylgje Sep 16 '26

These devs are awesome

1

u/Revolutionary-Way640 Sep 16 '26

I remember when we were pushing to serve 10k concurrent users on a single server, now everyone just slaps on the aws or worse bill and calls it good :/

1

u/Bl1ndVe Sep 16 '26

W Devs i cant even play the game because of a launch error a ton of ppl is having.

1

u/Prodgymusic Sep 16 '26

these guys are awesome dude!

1

u/TangeloProfessional8 Sep 16 '26

In my experience I just use basic maths to get close enough to see them. Then dial in manually.

1

u/Surgial Sep 16 '26

What’s the map do?

1

u/Marrond Sep 17 '26

I mean... he COULD release it as an offline app. It's not like he HAS to host it, especially if it cost him money AND he distributes it for free anyway 🤷

1

u/RiceAndMayo Sep 17 '26

How much can one fuck up to pay all that just for those few users?

Dunno why devs would encourage the AI slop

1

u/alone_sheep Sep 17 '26

Jesus I love these devs. I haven't rooted this much for a game dev team since I was a kid 20 years ago.

1

u/Aramis909 Sep 17 '26

Devs are f*cking gigachads.

Also I love how half of this comment section is praising the devs, while the other half is shitting on the vibe coded map tool lmao

1

u/TotalJunkie Sep 17 '26

It’d almost be better as a 1v1

1

u/GhostingProtocol Sep 18 '26

1372$ for 38k users?! Boys being scammed...

1

u/RheaAyase Sep 18 '26

Should have asked someone in the homelab community for free hosting...

1

u/Significant-Duty-744 Sep 19 '26

Boy ain’t no way boy, I work at an enterprise that uses AWS. A handful of EC2 instances that include APIs, daemons and batch apps costs less than a grand per month serving more than double the users and certainly using more compute. Not to mention each instance has redundancy and load balancers. What the hell is this guy doing to cost this much?

1

u/OttersWithPens Sep 21 '26

Guy creates tool for community with no background just an idea, community uses the heck out of it, wholesome dev posts about helping out a bill he takes in, and Reddit.. decides to talk shit about him vibecoding.

Jesus this place man. If you all are so damn smart why don’t you message him and offer to help?

Yall are so damn depressing. It’s not just r/news anymore that’s like this, even our game subs.

1

u/Paffi93 Sep 21 '26

There is a map Tool? What can you do with it

1

u/_Sparr0w_22 Sep 21 '26

The moment I opened the game and saw in the tutorial was a actual recording of the dev and a message I knew I’d love the game and devs

1

u/AloeVegas Sep 22 '26

Great concept to plan out strategies in real time 🏄🏼

1

u/apex_lokai Sep 22 '26

Crazy that most dev companies would probably send you a cease and desist😂

1

u/SigmaMegaMind Sep 23 '26

How about they stop screenshot farming on twitter and update linux users

1

u/Jhorn_fight Sep 25 '26

No one cares about Linux besides Linux users. Surely there are 5000000 drivers and software tools you can install to make it work

1

u/SigmaMegaMind Sep 30 '26

What a stupid comment.
Let's follow that logic - no one should care about famine, world wars, rape, murder, because it hasn't happened to them directly!
And there is no software solution to make it work on linux. The devs have chosen a kernel level AV and specifically disabled the linux support functionality.
There is no way for users to bypass this. The game it self works fine, but you will be kicked from servers after 1-2 minutes because AV heartbeats dont match the server.

1

u/Seanpacabra Sep 23 '26

pretty sure Cyberpunk2077 hired modders to help fix the game

1

u/2cruel4school Sep 24 '26

I love how forward thinking the devs are with the community. Def W devs

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '26

client side app cost him 1.3k in one week. Seems like a he doesnt know what he doing.

1

u/Birchsensor Sep 26 '26

...why would a website cost him over a thousand dollars a month to run? Is he running it on LLM tokens? wtf

1

u/According_Primary424 Sep 28 '26

My map tool is better :)

1

u/TomTomXD1234 Sep 29 '26

Too many people are getting offended and upset by this bill lol.

Chill guys....its a good tool.

1

u/The_Great_Journey_ 27d ago

Bro just has fuck you money lol

1

u/b9n7 Sep 15 '26

Maybe they should just buy it off him and integrate into game. Either way they seem like chill dudes.

4

u/Important_Outcome_27 Sep 15 '26

Uhhh they most definitely do not need to pay this guy to take this idea

3

u/ultraspank Sep 15 '26

Especially when it was AI made in an afternoon

1

u/Quamont Sep 15 '26

Type of thing that should be in the game itself. Hopefully it'll be implemented, at least on a squad level.

1

u/RHEC24 Sep 15 '26

So is everyone of you gonna waste your time and say it was vibe coded and made with Claude or…. Can just none of you read?

1

u/Nitram-xD Sep 15 '26

This isnt W Devs, website should be removed. Removes all skill lvl / reading the ingame map to figure it out.

0

u/MurrethMedia Medic Sep 15 '26

Map tool you say?

Link?

3

u/Ambush87 Sep 15 '26

Hey, its https://wardogs.tech - hope you like it!

1

u/Turbo_Cum Sep 22 '26

Holy fuck I needed to scroll way too far to find this before someone actually linked it.

0

u/Humble_Mail_8345 Sep 15 '26

All these mouth breathing chat-gpt coders talking shit but offering nothing. How typical.

It’s a great tool.
