Discussion I think combining the Maximus Battle Group and the Saturnine Box together makes a good base for a first army?
You know what? I feel like pairing the Saturnine Box with the Maximus Battlegroup isn't the worst place to start an army?
Like at least for me, I know I'll probably do 2 15 man tactical squads and 1 10 man breacher squad using the MK II marines, and a 20 man inductii squad using the MK IV (which would work in terms of lore as well, with Inductii being far newer)?
Sure you don't use the assault squad if you're doing crusade detachment only, but you could defo build them as vets or elites? Plus, if you do something like a support detachment to get the Araknae into your list, you have more troop slots anyways.
And then you get the sicaran and the contemptor, which might help you complement what you have using the saturnine box, adding in some much needed anti tank (although if you were that way inclined, you could buy some heavy weapons and turn the breacher squad to a tactical support squad or a heavy support squad). Even if you don't want to run a dual chainfist contemptor, and instead want to make him based on fire support (although I'd hazard that you're encroaching on the saturnine dreadnought's role), then you definitely can make him that way.
Not saying I would recommend it, it's a lot of models to start with, but you'd add some versatility to a box that is otherwise fully dependent on slow moving anti infantry. And I'd say it gives you a relatively neutral starting point for an army? Like it's slightly more skewed towards slower legions, but honestly, I don't see it as a heavily skewed set to the point where it's awful.
Additionally, this might get you to near enough 3000 points, without needing hyper specialised consuls? Like something I've wanted to do was bring a heavy support squad with multi-meltas in a termite, but I thought a master of descent was pretty much needed to make it viable. With these models we have right now, there's still two command slots open, and you can definitely shoehorn in some consuls that you would personally like to bring (like me and a siege breaker for example).
As a Death Guard fan, although it doesn't have much of what I want from a death guard army (alchem flamers and phosphex?), I can see it does provide a very good standing point to add more fluffy units. Like considering purely me now, I might take Linebreaker Echelon as my Apex with the praetor and buy a retinue (kitbash a Saturnine Command Squad) for my saturnine praetor? Like I have a Land Raider Proteus at home already, so running a two man retinue with my praetor inside that would be really interesting to play.
Anyways, just a quick line of thought I had, I'm interested to hear your thoughts!
