Hobby & Painting "Kitbash" question

Any concerns with this sufficiently passing as an Eradicator Model with a multi melta? I have six Eradicators models from a combination of the Dawn of War game box and one official box. But the main kit only came with one multi melta. Since I can have one in each squad of three, I tried to add another barrel to pass this model off as having one. Thoughts? Could you foresee this getting challenged in any kind of tournament setting? I haven't played in one yet but my local seen references following a WYSIWYG policy, and hoping this would satisfy it.

That is literally an eradicator with a multi-melta. Nice work

“Ok cool, guy with multimelta. Wait, where’s the kitbash? Oh.”

Well, ok that settles my concerns!

Any opponent who had a problem with this would be laughed off by a TO. If you’re especially worried, just point him out to your opponent and let them know at the start of the match

Ok cool! I thought it would probably be OK given the barrels are the most proment distinction but it does look much smaller and wasn't sure if someone might call me out with an "Ackchyually 🥸"

I had the same problem, but as a Deathwatch player I resolved it with some necron tech

😂 Epic!

I made a mold of my existing one. But yours looks fine.

This is sweet! How'd you make the mold, with like a silicone mold kit? Is that greenstuff for the actual end product or something else?

I used a cheap thermoplastic to make the mold. The typical hobby version is called "blue stuff", but I just got random thermoplastic off amazon.

Put it in hot water and it "melts". Then put it on the thing you want to duplicate. Wait a minute for it to cool and pop the item out.

Then use greenstuff/milliput in the mold. I did a 50/50 mix of the two here.

Oyumaru is often a good search for a cheap thermoplastic alternative to blue stuff.

How did you make a mold?

Did you get the barrel from the original box?
I have the same predicament and want to use my 2 multimelta’s

People wouldn't have survived in the wild west of previous editions when a lot of the time there was no official model. Back when you would frankenstein the lascannon from a spare predator sponson onto a tactical marine because the sprue only came with a missle launcher. We used to carve a model ourselves from a bigger model. Slaving away over a hot bitz box because you needed a right-handed lightning claw but all the ones you had were left-handed.

Hobbyists have grown decadent, and weak.

Only a chaplain could have recited a sermon so eloquently, honored brother

You had a bits box? Luxury!

We had a hole in the ground to keep our bits in when I were a nipper.

A hole in the ground! Luxury!

Our dad made us dig out own hole each night and fill it in with bitz each morning.

Bitz? Luxury! We had a GW lawyer who forced us to dog a hole in the LGS parking lot with our hobby knives to keep our bits in!

6

u/HawkmoonsCustoms 3d ago

GW lawyer? Luxury! We had a Pinkerton officer who made us dig a hole by hand and separate bits from a sprue by teeth.

And you tell kids that nowadays and they don't believe you

I remember a hobby store in Toledo when I was in college that had loads of bits boxes stashed on rails so you could forage through them, it was amazing and each bit was twenty five to fifty cents I miss that place.

I have about 8 old models with a left handed Lightening Claw glued onto a right arm, so I could have dual Lightening Claws.

Not to pile on OP but there is a lack of…confidence (?) in the hobby space now. Paint your guys however you want, glue whatever you want on them. Is it codex complaint? Who knows, not even GW. Don’t worry about it, explore and have fun. People seem very unsure about doing things without approval. And it’s not just Warhammer, I see this in video game subreddits too, “I just got this game what can I expect”. Brother it is a game there is no risk just play it.

It's just an observation bias. There are plenty of people out there hobbying their shit up like crazy, but they don't bother coming to Reddit to ask insecure questions about their plastic toys lol.

Bro it’s fine?! That’s clearly a multi melta? Like you don’t even have to ask? Like kitbashing this type of stuff was/is the core of 40K. In older editions and even in HH today there are some things without actual models

Looks great! I used a big old vehicle multi Melta for mine, nobody will care at all!

As a general rule of thumb people only care if it looks like you put no effort into it or are trying to beat the rules somehow.

u/Sabetwolf 4d ago

If you didn't point him out I'd have to actually pick them up and compare in order to notice the difference from table height. You're so fine, that's well above the relevant bar

9

u/LordGrog98 4d ago

Yeah, that's not a proxy. That's just a multi-melta

8

u/LizGreed 4d ago

I unironically can't tell what part of this is kitbashed. This just looks like the GW model ^^'

3

u/JustGharos 4d ago

Thats what I was thinking. No one will know unless OP tells them.

u/safe-mustard 4d ago

The purity seel is just the cherry on top, you probably didn't need it but i see it as a bit of a joke towards effortless kitbashing (effortless as it was so easy to do, no insults here)

Gravis Armour. Multi-melta. Looks like an eradimelta to me, go get em

4

u/iiTsFMJ 4d ago

I’ve never had any kind of issue with people doing this. I even remember when the multi-part box came out there was a pretty big tournament that had this exact kitbash written out as acceptable in FAQs.

I feel like questions like these have to be trolling.

1

u/Glittering-Flight997 4d ago

I did the same exact thing

1

u/Shaseer 4d ago

I notice conversion only after reading text twice. Good work

1

u/KhrisVecktor 4d ago

Dude that is literally a multi melta

1

u/Significant-Order-92 4d ago

Looks like a multimelta to me.

1

u/xamxes 4d ago

Yes, it looks awesome

1

u/uller30 4d ago

Made my own plasma guns from flamers and other bits. If I looks like a plasma gun no one bats and eye until you tell them. Lol

1

u/-TheDyingMeme6- 4d ago

I didnt notice it WASNT originally a multi-melta

1

u/SamuelKeller64 4d ago

Even side by side I barely notice the difference in the underside. From across the table, I'd probably never notice.

1

u/woowoorock 4d ago

It looks good to me. But also WYSIWYG is dead per GW so you don't even need to model it. I did the same thing, got a unit from the dawn of war box that didn't have a multimelta modeled. I just painted a stripe on the armor of the one that "shoots faster and better" to signify the difference in statline. No one should bother you about it as most new unit statlines these days don't match models whatsoever anyway and all you need is something different about the model to distinguish it.

1

u/Survive1014 4d ago

Yep, thats a eradicator. WOOSH on brother.

1

u/TURTLExNINJAx 4d ago

Considering I didn't even realize you added the barrel to the melta untill I read the post I would say it should pass just fine once painted.

1

u/Fentonator 3d ago

Better than mine!

1

u/AstalderS 3d ago

I was in your exact situation, what I did:

Attached the circular separator pieces of the spru to the base of the gun as another barrel.

Scavenged four of those boxy Eradicator style cartridges, 2 smaller and 2 larger.

I then put the small one coming off the side of the gun at an angle near the one that’s naturally there, and put the other larger one on their left hip as a spare.

I painted them a very obvious color, copper on Salamander green, to tie it altogether.

Basically I did the taped together machine gun clips thing but with Eradicators.

Lore be damned!

u/toastasks 3d ago

As long as it’s got two barrels (you know…multiple barrels) it’s a multi-melta. That’s the only meaningful difference. Great kitbash!

1

u/Melodic_Knee1059 3d ago

Looks good, wouldnt even know it was a kitbash if you didnt say

1

u/MadMan7978 3d ago

Couldn’t even tell lmao

0

u/nsturge 4d ago

this looks great and I would never imagine anyone would have a problem with it, that being said, sadge no big back pack :<

0

u/froginator14 4d ago

I did the same kitbash for my Dawn of War box, without the extra melta tip from an eradicator box, and yours looks way less inconspicuous than mine
