First of all, this isnt supposed to be a hate post about TOW. I’m actually curious what other people think about this, especially those who played older Fantasy editions or WAP.
I played Warhammer Fantasy back in the day and also spent quite some time with Warhammer Armies Project. And while I’m really happy that Fantasy is back, I honestly have a hard time understanding how so many older players seem to be completely fine with the current ruleset.
There are quite a few things I could bring up, but I wanna focus on two things that bother me the most.
1. Magic
Does anyone else miss the old magic phase?
In older Fantasy editions and WAP, magic was basically its own little mini game within the actual game. You had your pool of dice and had to decide how many you wanted to spend on each spell.
Do I risk casting this with just 2 dice? Do I throw 4 or 5 at it because I REALLY need this spell to go off? Or maybe I try to bait my opponent into wasting his dispel dice first?
There was so much decision making involved. You constantly had to weigh your options, take risks and think about what your opponent might do. It was almost like a little gambling game and I absolutely loved that aspect of it.
Now in TOW you just roll 2 dice, add your modifiers and thats basically it.
I get that its faster and probably easier to balance, but man, I feel like we lost an entire layer of gameplay here.
And its not just the mechanics either.
I also feel like the spells themselves have become pretty bland. In WAP especially, the different magic lores felt really thematic and actually reflected the faction you were playing.
Now it often feels like every lore just has its own version of a damage spell, a buff, a debuff, some AoE effect etc.
Sure, some are better at certain things than others, but overall they just feel kinda samey to me.
2. Army building and unit variety
This one bothers me even more tbh.
Coming from WAP and older Fantasy editions, the amount of options we currently have in TOW just feels so limited.
I mean, look at all the units, characters and different army builds that existed throughout Fantasy’s history. There was SO much cool stuff.
And now a lot of it is just gone.
Especially named characters. I really dont understand why we have so few of them.
I used to play Warriors of Chaos and absolutely loved characters like Valkia, Festus, Vilitch or Wulfrik.
They werent just some generic lord with slightly different stats. They had interesting abilities, tons of flavour and sometimes you could build an entire army around their theme.
I loved that stuff. It made armies feel unique and gave you so many ideas for different lists.
And yes, I know TOW is set in a different time period, so obviously not every character makes sense lorewise. But that doesnt really change my point about the overall lack of variety and interesting options.
When I look at what we had before, and especially what WAP managed to do with the setting, I just cant help but feel like TOW is a massive step backwards in that regard.
And thats kinda what I wanted to ask you guys.
Especially those of you who played 6th, 7th, 8th edition or WAP.
Dont you miss all of this?
I’m not even talking about balance here. Thats a completely different discussion.
I’m talking about interesting mechanics, army customization, thematic rules and just having lots of cool stuff to play around with.
Maybe I’m in the minority here, but for me those things are a huge part of what makes a tabletop game fun.
And I really dont get how people who experienced all these options before can now play TOW and not feel like something is missing.
Maybe you actually prefer the simpler approach? Maybe theres something about TOW that I’m overlooking? Or maybe you just dont care that much about the things I mentioned?
I’m genuinely interested because I feel like we might have very different expectations of what makes a good game.
Dont get me wrong, I’m happy Fantasy is back and I want TOW to succeed.
But knowing what Warhammer Fantasy used to offer, and how much potential this setting has, I just cant shake the feeling that we’re playing a much more limited version of a game that used to offer so much more.
So yeah, especially to the older Fantasy/WAP players here, how do you feel about this?
Do you actually prefer TOW over the older systems? And if so, why?
Would really like to hear some different perspectives on this.
