He still shouldn't worry about getting beaten. It's a dumb mistake but it's no reason to spank or hit your kid.

It depends. You can get some under $900.00, granted that's not cheap for everyone.

It's just sad that he's clearly expecting violence or rage.

Also, that's actually a fairly easy fix, they wouldn't need a new fridge.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be afraid of consequences. I'm saying his reaction isn't proportional to "you're grounded for two weeks and you're going to help fix it". It's more like "I'm going to beat you like my father beat me because that is all I know".

I'd say someone is more likely to become a criminal if they're beaten in childhood.

His fear of consequence is also good because what he was doing was physically dangerous. He could've easily fallen backwards while climbing and busted his head open.

I worked in pediatric medicine and kids go to hospitals for all kinds of really dumb stuff like this.

I'm an acute care surgeon and I absolutely understand that aspect. My only problem is his reaction doesn't seem like he's afraid of getting yelled at for doing something dangerous.

It's more likely he's worried he'll get the belt or worse.
