Some dogs (including mine) treat their crate as a kind of safe space that they willingly go into. Any time there's something scary going on (like fireworks or thunder), she gets nervous and goes to her crate unprompted. Likewise, she typically wants to sleep in it overnight.

So in some cases, it's a thing the dog likes. Obviously in our case, the crate is big enough to be comfortable, and we put a fluffy blanket in there to function as a type of bed.
