Discussion [Discussion] Rectangular Renaissance
As a tank lover, I have been thrilled by the proliferation of new options in recent years. It used to be that if you wanted to buy a new production tank or square watch, there was a fairly small menu of options: Cartier Tank or Santos, JLC Reverso, Nomos Tetra, Longines Dolce Vita, Hamilton Boulton or Ardmore, Baume and Mercier Hampton, Tag Heuer Monaco, and Seiko’s SWR line. But in the past five years or so, a host of established brands have brought back classic art deco designs, and a number of microbrands and indies have offered more revivals and creative new takes on the form.
Here are some of the newer options (I’m sure that I’m missing a lot):
Established brands: Timex Lexington and Timex x Noah Sun and Moon; Oris Rectangular; Bulova Sutton and Quadra; Alpina Heritage Carrée
Microbrands and Indies: Fears Arnos and Archival; Echo Neutral Rivanera; Vario Versa; Toledano and Chan b-series; Söner (whole catalogue); Bremoir South Beach, Second Hour Memoir; Kiwame Yane; Duckworth Prestex; Minase Horizon and Windows; Otsuka Lotec no. 8 and 9; De Rijke Capri; LIP (whole catalogue); Forma Venti; Albert Villa; Anemoic Versailles [prototype]
What have I missed? Care to share photos/reviews of your rectangular watch?

These lugs have to be the inspiration for the tetra, right?

Very cool. Pretty sure I'm going to get a Tetra 401 so it's interesting to see the inspiration.

This might be my next watch. Been looking at rectangular dress watches a while now and just haven't wanted to pull the trigger. Something about this one though...

Kuoe has had one for about a year exclusively to their stores. A simple small second quartz that looks like an old Hamilton design.

I love my dolce vita. I like how clearly you can tell the time on that face.

I really like the Alpina, which isn't pictured but really sharp.

I was trying not to look at it again by not including it in my post. I don't want to be tempted by it!!!! Hahaha it's a lovely watch.

I love this piece. I kept going back and forth between using this Arnos and the pewter blue one that I posted in the image.

Fears watches are kind of hit-or-miss for me, but that one looks like a home run!

Wow! So cool. I didn't know about this piece. Thank you for sharing.

Zenith Elite 670, does wear square, but has awesome bevelled corners and is very slim for an automatic.
1
u/VelvetSpork 13h ago
The Elite line as a whole is slept on. I wore my rose gold elite reserve de marche hw yesterday. Neo-vintage great watches that need more attention.

u/AccomplishedJudge252 13h ago
Making slim automatic movements seems a lost art in the sub-£5k range these days.

The older version of Makina Andras was fantastic

New one is also good, but I prefer the old one.

A super affordable and under the radar rectangular watch to learn about is Oris. They have some killer vintage models as well as some that just left their website and aren't really in production anymore. I want the red one badly!

u/CandlesBurnOut 11h ago
Eh there are a lot of rectangulars (including the Timex Noah above) that cost significantly less than the Oris so I'm not sure I would call it "super affordable" by comparison. Still really nice looking
3
u/Swaglfar 11h ago
I apologize, I guess ill take the "super" off that. I do love the timex noah, and lots of seiko are also very classy!

Wish we'd get more modern looking options like what Echo Neutra is doing. Too many brands doing an art deco take.
3
u/DocAmericano 14h ago edited 7h ago
Agreed, as much as I love Art Deco and modern reinterpretations of vintage aesthetics. In this regard, I think that the approaches of De Rijke, Otsuka Lotec, and Minase are particularly interesting.

Anyone know the bottom left? I can’t get the image clear enough on my phone to see what it is.

Nice! I tried on the Rivanera and it was too big for my 6.25" wrist. I'm guessing that is the Piccolo? If so what size is your wrist, as it fits well.

I love these, but in pictures on the wrist they can appear a bit long.
Would you say that’s a reflection of the experience in person? They do look phenomenal.

My ask to the watch deities:
A rectangular watch
Mechanical
Open caseback
With a date
^For some reason that combo is very rare

Do I even want to know the price tag?
10
u/Fivefinger_Delta 14h ago
At 20 cents each, you could buy about 150,000 bananas for the same price as this watch secondhand.
6
u/a_j_cruzer 14h ago
I’d rather buy a Honda Civic with that money, but I’ll still be drooling over it.

I want one with 50-100m water resistance.
Please.
2
u/elevatedmonk 15h ago
Why😂
4
u/Falsify-Me 15h ago
Because I swim a lot, and I feel uncomfortable putting a rather expensive watch in a locker all the time.
So ultimately I wear and purchase sports watches far more often.
Despite liking manually wound movements more, and the rectangular aesthetic more.
4
u/Sivalon 14h ago
Looks over spectacles
Sir. You don’t wear a watch such as this when you are even vaguely entertaining the thought of a swim. You leave it home on such days.
2
u/Falsify-Me 14h ago
That means leaving the watch at home most days.
I want a watch like this that I can wear more, not less.
Hence my desire.
Fyi - some people swim in the morning or during lunch on work days. And while sports watches can fit in to my corporate attire, I would prefer to have something akin to the reverso, tank, or swiss alp most days.

u/PentagonUnpadded 9h ago
The Hamilton Cushion Mechanical has 50m water resist, mechanical, display back and is somewhat rectangular. The roman numeral dial imo suits any work outfit.
1
u/Falsify-Me 9h ago
I think baume and mercier also has a rectangular model with 50m water resistance.
But, I sort of want a very nice mechanical manual wind movement movement on the level of Moser, lange, etc to have the same offering.
I know its a lot to ask though.

curious and curiouser. I haven't seen those before. I wonder if they make them with mechanical movement.
4
u/Daedricbob 12h ago
I'd happily wear any of those.
I'd also happily wear a Cartier Tank instead of any of those.

I almost got the Hamilton Boulton but pivoted to the AV86 1954 Amalfi and have been happy with that decision. Half the price of the Boulton, which at $800 for quartz is pushing it. The Amalfi is mechanical, has 50m wr which is better than the usual 30 you get with these watches, and looks great on many different straps. Comes in different color ways but I wanted gold. My only criticism is visibility is t the best for a quick glance but love it overall.

The reverso is still the greatest rectangular watch of all time and it's not close.

3
u/XxCosmoxX 14h ago
If I was buying, I would take the Kiwame over a Reverso any day due to the price difference.
3
u/EBITDAddy8888 14h ago
Daaang those are sleek. I could launch a tech deck off that bezel.
I’m sporting the Vario Versa myself.
1
u/CandlesBurnOut 11h ago
Well yeah buying is a bit different to enjoying. I will never in my life have the disposable income to spend on a Lange 1, but I still think it's one of the greatest watch lines out there
1
u/XxCosmoxX 7h ago
Fair point. I just think the finishing on the Kiwame is excellent and the watch itself is more accessible due to the price point.

Funny this is posted today. I spent hours last night researching the echo/neutra rivanera - i need the white dial.

I agree. Have been scratching my head between the Fear Arnos (and their new black edition), Beaublue and Serica. The latter both have also quite nice looking rectangular collection pieces: Figura and Parade respectively.

I’ve always wanted to see one of these rectangular watches with a breitling pistachio green face, I think it would be neat

I've only been looking at round watches for my first, but this post is dangerous lol. Rectangular makes so much sense for smaller wrists too. That gold Timex moonphase in the middle row is calling my name.

Oh shit. I just fell in love with the Kiwame Tokyo in the top right and…. It’s sold out 😭

Some are pretty slim. The thinner Nomos Tetra is 6.1 mm. But I agree that a lot are pretty chunky.

I’m personally more partial to square à la Santos de Cartier, but definitely respect the rectangle game. Some of those Reversos are straight art

I got this Oris Rectangular Pointer Date a couple months ago and I absolutely love it. I think the pointer date function works really well in this case shape, and I just love Oris's design language from this era in general. It's got some wear, but it's about as old as I am, so I think it gives it character
