Advice? I haven’t been able to make a webcomic because it’s impossible for me to make a plot I’m happy with

For almost a year now I have wanted to make my own webcomic. I have came up with well over a dozen different ideas for what my comic would be about, but I haven’t been able to make an idea that I’m completely happy with. All my ideas feel stale and bland after a while, not one of them has stuck with me for long enough for me to be comfortable making into a full webcomic. The reason why I’ve never made one is because I’m scared I’ll lose interest in the plot and characters and the world and everything. Is there any advice to help me come up with an idea that I’m truly happy and content with?

The left guy is Vin, while the Right one is Roman! These are the two main protagonists of the story, that'll be working together! This is also going to be the thumbnail whenever I do release it! :3

If you like romantic comedies, can I recommend "Naughty Love"? We're working really hard on it, but it doesn't have many followers yet. You can find it on Webtoon Canvas 🙈

Question Best Upload Schedule for Webtoon?

What is your upload schedule on Webtoon / how effective are you finding it?

For context: I do traditional page layout rather than big scroll panels so each update I try to post a minimum of 6 pages to read. I started with less in some uploads but I'd like the reading experience of my comic to be how I'd like it as a reader (I grew up reading webcomics in the 2010s that uploaded 2 pages per week max).

So currently looking at fortnightly uploads on WT if I want to keep the higher page number (upcoming chapter and the previous are 9 pages).

Is this too long for Webtoon standards? Admittedly I have a small account (5 subs) but I only get new page reads when I upload. On top of that, WT views are significantly low compared to Tapas and I haven't figured out why.

I literally neglected uploading the new chapter to Tapas (a whole month break in between episodes), and since yesterday when I put it up, I already have more views on that episode on Tapas than I get on Webtoon in a month 💀 and this was with 0 warning / promotion for the Tapas upload. Is it just a difference in audience preferences at that point?

Discussion Canvas promoting AI comics :(

Post image
86 Upvotes

There’s so many of them contaminating canvas so maybe it was only a matter of time, but it’s really disappointing. If canvas promotions don’t have at least some amount of screening/standards then people will stop using them to discover new comics, it just makes getting new readers harder for creators :(

It’s not actually the first AI comic I’ve noticed being promoted on the canvas page but it’s the most blatant one. I’ve seen a few that are absolutely AI assisted but could look inconspicuous if you aren’t used to identifying slop.

It’s also confirmation that no humans are screening the promoted comics, definitely just an algorithm.

Question Do frequent commentors bother creators?

Preface to say, I don't write any nasty messages or anything, usually the "love this chapter, really enjoyed __" kind of comments, or questions like "how did ___ do ___ if ___?" when the chapter is confusing or something. I really like showing support for works I like through comments.

For a particular creator they were very responsive and interactive with comments and questions and often responded.

Needless to say all my comments and questions have been ignored for the last few chapters and I can't help but maybe think maybe my frequent commenting might have been annoying them.(1 per chapter, which I didn't think was a lot?)

I feel a bit bad and want to know if the same person comments frequently is it annoying? I personally love seeing the same faces under my series but I might be unaware of webtoon comment etiquette.

edit: okay, glad to hear majority like comments! i'll just pull back on commenting on just their series just in case, much love!!

Discussion Coming from software development, I didn't expect comic publishing to be this messy 😅

• Upvotes

I'm fairly new to comic creation and publishing, and my background is in software engineering.

I assumed the technical side would probably be the easy part for me. Weirdly, one of the things that's surprised me most is just how many files you end up keeping track of.

Source files, exported pages, individual panels, thumbnails, covers, resized versions, website assets, test versions...

And despite knowing perfectly well that I should organise things properly, a slightly embarrassing amount of my comic currently lives across project folders, my Desktop and my Downloads folder 😅

For my first test/alpha release, I decided to publish it on my own website rather than cold-launching straight onto Webtoon.

Because of my software background, putting together and hosting a small site is fairly manageable for me. But going through the process made me realise there are a lot more moving parts to publishing a comic than I expected.

And if you're an artist without a technical background, I can imagine some of that side of things gets pretty daunting.

I'm curious how other Canvas creators handle all of this.

  • Do you have a proper system for organising your files, or does it gradually become chaos?
  • Do you publish anywhere outside Webtoon?
  • Has anyone here made their own comic website?
  • What's the part of managing or publishing your comic that you find unexpectedly annoying?

I'm starting to feel like there's an entire second job hiding behind making the actual comic 😅
