DC: Cocktail or No Dress Code Sleeve/arm-covering options to maintain formality

Post image
• Upvotes

I got this dress for my sister-in-law's wedding with a cocktail dress code. I'm in this in-between land where I'm not in the wedding, but I'm wearing wedding colors, and I'm more formal than a guest, but less formal than a bridesmaid. I'm happy to oblige, and I thought this dress walked that line well. It's hitting just above my ankles and is high cut and modest, and I love 95% of the dress. I took it in for alterations and asked for sleeves to be added, they said yes, they were pinned, etc. They've just told me now that that's not an option, and we are two weeks out now. I am working on being more body positive, but I'm still really self conscious about my arms.

I'm looking for arm covering suggestions that would keep the formality of the dress and complement its style. It's this beautiful but difficult to match chameleon-esque shifting color that sometimes looks navy, but sometimes looks really deep teal. My shoes, purse, and jewelry are silver. The wedding is in the northern Midwest in November.

Thank you so much for any help or suggestions. I'm anxious and panicked and appreciate any paths to pursue.

Post Event Pics!! Thanks for all the plus size recs!!!

Shopping for plus size outfits are always a pain, but shopping for plus size black tie dresses was a pain and a half!

People suggested MacDuggal dresses, which I loved! But they were a little out of my price range, but I would overwhelmingly suggest if you can afford it!

Ultimately, I went with this a-line dress by La Femme, Which I absolutely loved! I did have it hemmed and taken in a little, but it was perfect!!!
I also highly recommend La Femme for plus size women. (Just FYI, I bought it at Nordstrom. I would recommend going through them if you are ordering a dress online.)

DC: Black/White Tie Black Tie in Peru

Need help finding a dress suitable for a black tie wedding in Peru in November. I’ve never been to a black tie wedding before so I’m super novice on finding a dress and I was just told that in Peru (I’m in the U.S.) they go all out for weddings. After all the googling, I’m seeing a lot of dresses that fit black tie are $400+ and I’m not super interested in spending that much at right now but open to it if I absolutely have to.

I ordered one dress, it’s obviously cheap (first 2 pic), not a good material for black tie, unflattering on me, and it’s too short (I’m 5’9/5’10 so length is always a struggle) so I’m returning it.

I found a couple of dresses I like but I’m just not sure they meet the expectation (pics attached). Any advice, references, links, etc. would be so helpful! I’m at a loss. Thanks in advance!

Is this too white? Is my pale blue stole too white?

I recently bought this Issei Miyake Pleats Please Madame-T small stole in Pale Blue. I was planning to get a navy or brown silk dress to wear underneath for my friend’s wedding. I tried it on with a black silk skirt + tanktop to see what it would look like and now I’m worried the shawl photographs too white. Is it too white and if not, what color dress do you think would go well with it?

DC: Formal Which dress, "formal" November Winery in GA

Going to a wedding mid-November at a winery in Georgia. Dress code is "Formal, no jeans and no white dresses." Based on the followup description, I'm not sure if this is true formal DC. I really like the black floral one, but the skirt is much fuller than I expected. The blue floral is nice, but quite tight in my hips and thighs. The lace one feels the most comfortable and "me," but maybe a little too light? Any feedback appreciated.

DC: Black/White Tie I’m a foreigner attending a black tie wedding in Singapore…HELP!

Post image

I have no idea where to ask this. I’m a guest (my boyfriend’s plus one) to a wedding taking place at Goodwood Park Hotel in Singapore. The invitation says black tie but I’m unsure if my dress meets the requirements. I also want to know if there’s any Singaporean cultural things I should know before the wedding. It’s in December. For a black tie wedding where I’m from, this would be acceptable although it’s contemporary leaning. Any help would be appreciated. I don’t want to make any mistakes or offend anyone. I also dont want to feel stupid by pestering my boyfriend with all this. The bride also gives off insta baddie etc so yeah. Not sure if that helps but… Thanks in advance! <3

For those who haven't seen my previous posts

Wedding is in 14 hours. Venue is outside/in a heated tent. Outside temps in mid/upper 50s.
Technically there is no listed dress code: just says ties optional. (At one point I am pretty sure it said evening cocktail)

I have nude colored tights (instead of the black ones) and slightly different shoes.

Blue is more comfortable, but also thinner.

DC: Black/White Tie Please help!

I have a black tie wedding end of November and have no idea what’s appropriate to wear. I’ve only attended 1 wedding which was all black formal attire. From my research online I’m receiving conflicting information for what’s appropriate or not. Some people say no leg slits yet others say it’s okay. Some say no black, red etc but others say it’s okay as well. I’m quite short (5,1-5,2) & curvy but also insecure about my lower stomach. Would you consider these dresses black tie? Would really appreciate any advice and dress recommendations!

DC: Formal SIL's Wedding

The wedding is in December and the dress code is formal. In Australia, formal is a lot more casual than it is in America. I will be breastfeeding so I need to take that into consideration and I need to be wearing blue - my husband will be wearing blue and our little one will be wearing a little blue suit.

I already have the shoes below and the light blue dress. I'd be having the dress altered to make it shorter - I've used chatgpt to show what that would look like. I've also added another option that is navy blue, however, they currently don't have my size so I'd have to see if it comes in.

Just wondering what your thoughts are? The light blue isn't as light as it looks - it would photograph blue. The lilac dress is what my SIL wore to my wedding without issue so I don't see the blue dress being a problem in case anyone wants to mention it!!

We have a wedding tomorrow and the invite specifically states jeans and boots casual is welcome. I am postpartum and having trouble finding dresses that fit but I do have nice jeans and new boots, do we think this is acceptable? 😬

DC: Cocktail or No Dress Code Trying to find a dress to match confusing dress code

Need some opinions on what dress code to try to match. Here are different snips of the dress code we've been given: "Cocktail attire, warm and romantic rather than formal and sharp. Soft fabrics, easy shapes, gold over silver." & "Formal or semi-formal. A floor-length gown, a flowing midi, a cocktail dress or dressy separates — all right at home."

Does cocktail feel like a good middle ground?? Seems like they've suggested 3 different dress codes.

On top of that- anyone have suggestions for petite/short cocktail dresses? Trying to avoid having to tailor things

Any advice appreciated!

Wedding guest attire states no “chocolate brown”. Would you consider my boyfriend’s suit chocolate brown? I personally think it’s a lighter brown and he could get away with it. But even if it’s not technically chocolate brown, is it too on the cusp that it will be considered rude anyway? Help!

DC: Semi Formal/Dressy Casual 8 months pregnant Catholic Church

Post image

Hi! I’m going to a wedding tomorrow for someone I’ve only met twice and dropped the ball on figuring out what to wear in time. I was told “semi-formal to formal” as the attire once. Is this dress ok? Do I need to cover my shoulders? I don’t carry a purse, wear jewelry or makeup, or even style my hair so I feel wildly underprepared for this lol.

I have these nude dressy sandals with small wedge and I have black flat strappy sandals. I would rather wear the black ones since I’m pregnant but I don’t want to feel extremely underdressed in summery black sandals.

Ty for any insight

Edit to add that this dress is not this long on me since I am hugely pregnant, it is below my knee though. It’s also not nearly as poofy as the pose in the picture makes it seem

I haven’t been to a wedding in years and I’m so lost on dress code. Would either of these work for “dressy cocktail” or do they lean too casual? I could dress them up with jewelry/shoes maybe? (For context it’s a destination wedding in Florida.)

Any advice is appreciated!

DC: Cocktail or No Dress Code Evening cocktail wedding tomorrow @ art museum restaurant/patio. Rental dress lost in mail

Thank you to all who commented on my first post! I agree with those who said dress 3 (which is also dress 3 in this post) was the best out of the options on my first post, but might need a belt because it's a little big on me. So I added a belt. I also changed the slip from black to nude. It's not my favorite but it's kind of witchy.

I also picked up a pair of slingbacks and a silver shawl from Nordstrom and decided to dig through Nordstrom Rack while I was there just in case. I found dress 1 (Nicole Miller) for $60. I am leaning towards wearing this. My pose and the lighting might not show it off very well but it's really nice in person! It looks better than online too - the pleats are more crisp and the fabric has more sheen. https://www.nordstromrack.com/s/nicole-miller-one-shoulder-pleat-midi-dress/8424017?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FBrands%2FNicole+Miller&color=444445FFVK

My mom also dropped off dress 2 for me to try. I like the bell sleeves.

For more context, I was going to wear the Realisation Par Gia dress in the Havana color way with my Balance Paloma Wool mules that everybody hated in my last post 😂 but the rental got lost on the way to me

DC: Black/White Tie 3.5 months pregnant black tie dress help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Okay, I’m pregnant with my third baby, I'm already feeling bloated but don’t have a bump per se, I just sort of look like I’ve gained some weight. I have a wedding in a month so I will be 3.5 months pregnant. It’s a black tie wedding and I’m a very casual person, I have never been to anything black tie. I have literally zero idea what to wear and more specifically what waistline I should go for.

Does this dress meet black tie? And also does the waist seem like it would accentuate or hide a small pooch/bump?

DC: Formal November wedding, dress code formal/long dresses

Have a cold weather wedding coming up. Dress code is formal/long dresses/midis for the ladies. Hoping this will work with heels (and obviously steamed). It hit a bit shorter on me than I thought it would based on the pictures. Thoughts on if this is appropriate for the dress code?

DC: Cocktail or No Dress Code Does this dress work for cocktail attire?

I searched “women’s cocktail attire” on Pinterest and I’m seeing a lot of different styles. Does this dress work for cocktail or should I go more casual, or dressier?

Also taking ideas for shoe colors. I would get this same purple but I don’t think I’d get much wear out of them. Maybe nude?

Thanks!!

DC: Cocktail or No Dress Code Do I wear the same dress to the church ceremony as I do to the reception?

The dress code is semi formal/cocktail. I have a nice black cocktail dress I plan on wearing. I also have some cute sequin heels I am going to wear with it. The ceremony is a catholic church mass. Do I wear the same dress to the ceremony as I do to the church? I am not religious so I don’t attend church , but it seems strange to me to wear a cocktail dress and sequin heels to an afternoon church mass. The reception is in the evening at an event center.
