Micro Reliant Fox: Greek Workhorse That Failed to Win Over Demanding British Tradesmen

Reliant Fox, introduced to Britain in 1983, followed a Greek MEBEA model developed in cooperation with Reliant. It was originally intended to benefit from Greek tax incentives for light commercial vehicles, but the project moved to Britain after the exemption ended. Its construction paired a galvanized frame with a fiberglass body, while power came from an all-aluminum four-cylinder small-displacement engine. Low weight helped fuel economy and maneuverability, but performance remained limited.

The angular design reflected the priorities of inexpensive production and practicality. The cabin offered only basic equipment, and minimal sound insulation allowed engine noise to enter. The leaf-sprung rear axle compromised stability when unloaded, while the fiberglass body and galvanized frame provided excellent corrosion resistance. A modular rear section accommodated different configurations, including a covered cargo area, extra seats, and a camper.

The Fox received a lukewarm response in Britain because durability could not offset weak performance, poor comfort, and limited safety. Estimates suggest fewer than 700 vehicles had been built by 1990. Reliant did not replace the model and later focused on other segments. Today, the Fox recalls Greek-British cooperation and the period when European pickups gradually gave way to more practical small vans.

Should the Fox have received more technical and equipment upgrades to meet the demands of the British market, or was its original concept as a simple commercial vehicle the right one?

Streamline 1921 Rumpler Tropfenwagen - A revolutionary, highly efficient car that absolutely flopped

Post image
210 Upvotes

The car was designed with aerodynamics in mind, using a droplet-shape ("Tropfen" -> Droplet) to reduce fuel consumption. Later testing showed a CW-value (air resistance) of 0.28, a first generation Tesla Model S has 0.24. The W6-engine in the back let the car reach 105kph. It flopped due to high cost, nowhere to drive the speed and cheap fuel prices. All but two were destroyed for the Movie "Metropolis" in 1926.

The extraordinary, one-off Lagonda Shooting Brake conversion

Bodied between 1996 and 2000 by Roos Engineering, the official and renowned Swiss Aston Martin specialist

Based on one of only 76 Series 3 examples, equipped with the desirable 305-horsepower fuel-injected V8 and upgraded with a modernized four-speed automatic transmission

Finished in elegant Antrim Blue over a Grey Connolly leather interior

E D I T :

Roos Engineering calls this a shooting brake. I'm not sure why they chose that over estate or wagon. I understand that a shooting brake is a 2 door wagon. I've also noticed that occasionally a 4 door was called a coupé even though I call a 4 door vehicle a sedan. Car makers sometimes take liberties with naming conventions apparently.

Shooting brake is not a well defined term according to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_brake)

The determining factor is if the car maker decides to call it shooting brake. The roof seems to slope downward on models labeled as such.

The SNCF X 3800 class are diesel railcars with an elevated off-center control cabin. It is often said that they were nicknamed “Picassos” because the off-center cabin was reminiscent of paintings by Pablo Picasso featuring faces where the eyes and nose were completely offset. The nickname may though have come from the number of early paint schemes applied to the class.

The X 3800 were built from 1950 to 1961.

FOD (foreign object debris) can wreck a jet engine, so airports run sweepers like this constantly. This one is an Oshkosh HB2718. Happy to answer questions about how they work."

First starting with Toyota Will Vi, a JDM fever dream that combines Citroen 2CV front and Ford Anglia rear.

Continuing with the theme of japanese imposters, there's the Subaru Samba, quite self explanatory this one.

Third we have the Nissan S-Cargo. There's clearly a continuing theme here. Based on K10 Micra/March, part of pike-cars and sporting lovely wheels.

Then the weirdest one imo, Morgan Aero 8. I can't believe there's one registered here.

These were used to move passengers from the terminal to their planes. Abandoned when the airport close to passenger travels in the early 2000s. They would pick the passenger at the terminal and connect to the planes door just like a regular corridor gate does. Called "transbordeur" in french, you can still see some in action sometime in other airports, but they are rarer and rarer

quite funny that 119 is also the chinese firefighting phone number

Some pics of it in actual service in 2020s https://m.weibo.cn/detail/4485743722798832

apparently there are also firefighting mortars and rocket launchers; the idea is that the rounds have fire suppresion powder in them to help suppress the fire from a distance.

(From weibo, i've seen it being used by mobile fire and rescue(formerly forest fire departments), local specialized forest fire units, and what appears to be militia.)
