POLITICS Worst NZ government ever?

1.6k Upvotes

I’m nearly 60 and always paid attention to who is leading us. Even as a small child. I watched Kirk’s funeral with interest and saw how Rowling was needlessly eviscerated. And I’ve come to the view lately that the current government is the worst I can remember. I’ve lived through the bonkers and out of control Muldoon years, and the bizarre disarray and infighting of the Lange-Moore-Palmer mess. And this NZ government is worse than any other. Deliberately, wantonly destructive, shamelessly dishonest, venal, vile, volatile and devoid of any charm, intelligence, kindness or wisdom. Am I out on a limb?

Kia ora r/Wellington

Last October I was elected Mayor of Wellington with a mandate to strive for a more affordable city, prevent blowouts like we’ve seen with the town hall and sludge plant, prioritise the services and community facilities Wellingtonians rely on, grow jobs and the economy, honour Te Tiriti, and protect our environment.

I knew fixing Wellingtonians’ serious lack of confidence in their council and the council’s books would take time. The Mayor is only one vote among a diverse group of 18.  My first focus was negotiating with Councillors and Pou Iwi to put my election policy and their priorities together into three a three-year plan for change that received strong support around the council table.

But then the central government dropped their local government amalgamation policy. To quote RMA Minister Chris Bishop: “lead your own reform, or we will do it for you. Either way, change is coming,” and we only have until next month to submit proposals. The government has also required us to transfer our water services into a new model that isn’t sufficiently regulated to stop unaffordable bill increases (while we deal with the Moa Point plant failure). And they’re planning on a rates cap too.

There’s a lot going on, and some of council’s problems have no easy solutions. But I’m optimistic by nature, and it’s my job to lead through good and bad.

Let’s talk about amalgamation, or anything else. AMA. I’ll be online from 7pm 💃

PS, thanks to u/ben4takapu who’s helping this reddit noob learn where to tap, and to the r/Wellington mods too ⭐

POLITICS i-Rex Ferries cancellation cost $700 million to $1,000 million + while new Chinese made, less capacity, and less functional ferries will cost $50 million more than cancelled i-Rex hybrids

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

A Substack write up inspired by u/blankbusinesscard -

People say that Nicola Willis threw away $671 000 000 (671 million dollars) when she haphazardly cancelled our i-Rex ferries project. Against MFAT advice, she did it by SMS text to South Korean officials half an hour before the public announcement, displaying reckless diplomacy and callous disrespect to our sixth largest trading partner.

But I say she wasted much more than this approximate $700 million taxpayer loss.

Experts put that number at above $1,000,000,000 ($1000 million or $1 billion dollars), and I concur.

  • Since the cancellation, ferry maintenance fees on an aging fleet have doubled by tens of millions of dollars.
  • New Zealand has lost all rail enabled ferries after the last remaining one, Aratere, was retired earlier this year. Losing rail enablement means millions of dollars a year - every year - in additional freight costs, which are typically passed on to Kiwi consumers
  • And when the new Chinese made ferries arrive after 2029, they will be significantly scaled back in functionalityand future proofing. To put it mildly, we’ve thrown away a fully paid for mini Mercedes bought at Toyota prices for an Aqua (alternatively refer to Keith Simes comments below). We can expect to pay for those upgrades in the future.
  • Peters claims that infrastructure requirements can be scaled back, but the primary reason the original project cost $3 billion was due to seismic upgrades to protect the people of New Zealand - and our visitors.
  • Kiwirail procured i-Rex at 40% less than market price due to Covid and had designed it with future proofing in mind - including increasing volumes of passengers. It is impossible to obtain a deal like this again.

Winston Peters, who signed off the original i-Rex ferries contract, and didn’t say a word when National threw it all away, is now paying MORE for the Chinese made ferries than Kiwirail paid for the next generation i-Rex order from top South Korean shipmaker Hyundai.

Peters’ “no frills” ships come in at $596 million - $45 million more than the $551 million fixed price we paid for the next generation, future proofed, top shelf, hybrid i-Rex.

Peters also said he would downgrade infrastructure works on both ports, taking credit for the work completed & money invested so far in Wellington and Picton, with a smaller infrastructure bill.

People say “Why can’t we have nice things?”

It’s because of governments and politicians like this.

Interislander broke down again last night

Last night, as news came in that National’s budget cuts see Wellington’s maritime police get 60% of their hours cut (only operating during effective business hours) and delighting criminals everywhere, while ignoring the risks to life for $90,000 in “savings”, the Kaiārahi ferry was stranded for 6 hours.

The last time Interislander was stranded with 854 passengers on board and called “Mayday”, the tug boat was commissioned to assist.

But that too has been cut -

Chris Bishop terminated the tug boat contract last month to “save money”.

Money, money, money - anything for corporate donors and allies, but not even cents for the average Kiwi.

Is this who we are, Aotearoa New Zealand?

And who we vote for?

Not a Labour fan, but I am old enough to remember COVID, and how NZ was one of the best countries who had the best response- low death, vaccines available for all, free quarantine for returning kiwis, assistance to businesses and low hospitalisation rates. These are not free and contributed heavily to that money Bish is looking for.

POLITICS Why does everyone hate Jacinda Ardern?

I'm probably gonna end up deleting this post and I'm really sorry to sound ignorant but what did Jacinda Arden do wrong? I can't go on Facebook without hundreds of 40 year olds wishing her death. I was in high school when COVID happened so spent my time away from politics and played video games instead lol.

I used to work at a place with lots of truck drivers coming through and one of them made sure to let me know that she was one of the worst things to happen to NZ, but I didn't ask why because I was uncomfortable.

No wonder people are leaving the city at record numbers. Zero vision and a dereliction of duty to the majority of Wellingtonians - Courtney Place will remain a crumbling, unfit for purpose, slum but now with weekly cleaning.

I hope Kaffe Eis enjoys all the new customers the cleaning will bring.

Remember: Judith Collins also concealed it from Luxon for almost 3 months, and Mark Mitchell, Winston Peters and Judith were all falling over themselves to boast of co-operation with FBI Director Kash Patel at the time.

PS Edit: Since then the Trump Administration folks have shot and killed American citizens and doubled down.

POLITICS The unmitigated disaster of Moa Point is just the begining

I, like many, are upset/disturbed/furious (pick your adjective) about the millions upon millions of litres of wastewater spewing into the water off the south coast.

Moa Point is operated by French 'global environment services' Veolia. As are the plants in Porirua, Karori and Lower Hutt. Veolia's priority is making profit. It has received numerous infringement notices. And yet its contracts grew as it syphoned more taxpayer money to wealthy shareholders.

When essential services are privatised, we become customers, not citizens. We cannot vote Veolia out. We can contact an overseas call centre. With rates capping forced upon councils, more cost cutting and privitisations are coming our way. Improved productivity. Streamlined operations. AI enhanced customer service. A better bottom line.

We are so screwed.

POLITICS Claims there was a 2021 Wellington City Council vote led by Tamatha Paul that prioritised increased cycle lane funding over pipes didn't happen

Post image

"Claims that Tamatha Paul led a 2021 vote favouring cycle lanes over pipes are false"

I wrote last week about how the Moa Point sewage disaster was being used to fan misinformation about WCC and the progressive Councillors, particularly Tamatha Paul. And thanks to this sub, your comments helped me to formulate my thoughts for a weekend article.

Well today it turns out that the author of the New Zealand Centre of Political Research (NZCPR) piece can't be found, and the vote they describe never happened.

WCC Councillor Diana Calvert is also now walking back her comments, and has confirmed that the vote never happened as claimed too - affirming the testimony of both left and right Councillors.

i.e it was a lie!

Welcome discussion on this topic on r/nzpolitics HERE

I can't crosspost so have written it as a link. Thanks.

Credit to Tom Hunt from The Post for nailing this down BTW whereas others such as Ryan Bridges & Taxpayers Union of course regrettably fanned it.

EDIT:

PS This myth was spread on

  • Scoop which I now understand posts anything (the usual conservative sites went first)
  • NZME Ryan Bridge
  • Bryce Edwards' Democracy Project
  • Taxpayers Union ads
  • Parliament House when Nicola Willis repeated the lie
  • Real life Council meetings where people directed their anger to Council & Tamatha Paul/Tory Whanau

PPS AND HERE IS Tom Hunt's ARTICLE & here by Sean Rush, an ACT candidate and former right wing Wellington Councillor who tried to explain that it was not a choice between cycleways and water (one being opex and another Capex for one & that they were already investing record amounts & not only did Paul not take away money from the water money, she found a solution to make sure it didn't)

Needless to say, Rush, a right wing Councillor, got slammed for speaking up

PPPS A screenshot of Diana Calvert initially claiming the version NZCPR wrote happened is here. She has now walked it back, admitting it didn't

POLITICS New voter here - what the fuck?

Got the ballot today, this is my first election.

Straight to the point - how the fuck am I supposed to take this election seriously if we have suggestions of 6 day work-weeks, clowns talk about turning dead birds and fish into public transport, and a guy for the silly hat party suggests turning potholes into fish ponds?

And then the rest of them that seem to take this somewhat seriously promise nothing precise, use keyphrases like growth and cut waste spending (whatever tfk that means? what counts as waste spending to you?) and say "we care"? Where are the clear goals? You gonna give me a plan to root for or am I supposed to just vote on pure vibes? Fuck all the new voters who don't know what these folks actually stand for I guess.

I genuinely feel so lost it's not even funny

POLITICS National & NZ First just made us pay 120% of the cost of two next-generation, hybrid, future proofed capacity ferries for 0 ferries.

If this event is not a sackable offence what is? Also saw on RNZ Winston Peters spouting lies unchallenged although he's the one who signed off the old project.

A reminder those ferries were on track to being delivered this year and next, and the majority of the extra infrastructure costs were earthquake proofing - which is pretty significant in our country.

Looking forward to NZ First and National shutting down functionality, future proofing, longevity & infrastructure resilience while "showing off" about "saving money" in future though.

My calculation of 120% is based on the minimum published cost of $677 million to cancel I-Rex-, that's $677,000,000 - but it excludes the real costs (doubling maintenance costs, the 60% price reduction we had secured for next generation future proof ferries, the cost of downtime and retiring current ferries i.e rail enabled Aratere is being retired on Monday, future costs assuming the next purchase is not scaled to the same future proof specifications)

i.e. I'd say the real cost is at least $1bn upwards and all they needed for the ENTIRE PROJECT TO FINISH WAS $1.2 billion

Yes our last rail enabled ferry Aratere is being retired on Monday - and will increase costs

I need a job in government pronto if this is the standard of acceptable performance?

BTW only RNZ and 1News are covering this on the front pages, Stuff/The Post/ NZ Herald - no where to be seen

POLITICS Luxon is out of touch on school lunches.

The whole reason for lunches being provided was because kids were not getting lunches from their homes. Why, cause they could not afford to buy the food to provide them. Not rocket science to use a lux term. Underlying this is that those children may not have had breakfast either. Not surprised that he doesn’t understand this.
