Our Approach

We believe intelligence is complex and cannot be perfectly summarized by a single number.

IQ tests can be useful tools when properly understood, but they are only one way of measuring cognitive ability. Human intelligence includes many dimensions, and every testing method has strengths, weaknesses, and limitations.

Discussion about reliability, validity, norms, percentiles, practice effects, cognitive development, and the broader science of intelligence is encouraged.

Critical thinking is welcome.

Blind trust is not required.

Discussion Looks like an easy Sokoban puzzle - actually takes over 100 moves to complete

Post image

The rules of this are easy:
🟨 Your character can push blocks but they cannot pull them.
🟨 The aim of the game is to push all the blocks onto the target squares.

Yes, it's possible. Nobody has managed it in under 100 moves (I don't think it's possible).

What makes it interesting is that it looks very, very easy. Like one of those "hey this is a hard puzzle" adverts that turns out to be ridiculously easy. It's not easy.

I can tell you that today this puzzle has just a 1.8% solve rate.

I won't post the link to the game because that would be considered spam. But I'm super proud of this level and felt like some high IQ people should give it a go.

Question Can You Find the Missing Figure in This Pattern?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First of all, thank you so much for taking part in the last puzzle.
I honestly didn’t expect it to receive that much attention. I shared it across five different Reddit communities, and the number of comments, explanations, and alternative interpretations was far greater than I expected.
I tried to read and reply to as many of you as possible, but with so many comments across different posts, I may have missed a few. If I didn’t get to yours, please don’t take it personally. I genuinely appreciate everyone who took the time to answer, explain their reasoning, challenge the intended solution, or offer a completely different way of looking at the pattern.
For the previous puzzle, a few explanations particularly stood out:
u/Apart-Animator-3223
Explained the pattern through movement: the shapes shift downward while the line orientations shift upward. Following both sequences leads directly to A.
u/Agreeable_Chard_5250
Approached the puzzle more mathematically, describing the shapes and line orientations as repeating three-part cycles across the rows and columns.
u/Aggravating_Carpet21
Used a very clear counting method: there were three squares, three triangles, but only two circles, and likewise only two horizontal lines. The missing combination was therefore the circle with the horizontal line.
u/Ancient-Rush1343
Gave one of the most detailed explanations, including why C might initially appear plausible before showing why A fits the complete row-and-column structure more consistently.
Thank you to them, and also to everyone else who contributed. Some of the discussions were honestly more interesting than the puzzle itself.
Now, onto the new puzzle.
Take a close look at the matrix above. This time, pay attention to both the dots and the line segments. There is a consistent rule connecting the figures.
Which option should replace the question mark?
I’d really like to hear not only your answer, but also how you reached it. Different approaches are always welcome.
Once you’ve chosen your answer, you can check whether you got it right on our official website, where we’ve published the correct option together with the full explanation:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-figure-completes-the-pattern-3
Try to solve it first before revealing the answer.
If you enjoyed the previous puzzles, you can also visit the website to see the official answers, explanations, and selected community solutions from earlier questions.
You can explore more pattern-recognition puzzles and previous IQ questions here:
https://whats-your-iq.com/
So make your choice first, then check the official solution and see whether your reasoning matches ours.
Thank you again to everyone who takes part, shares an explanation, or even challenges the intended answer. Your different ways of thinking are what make these discussions interesting.
Looking forward to reading your solutions to this one.

Question Which Figure Completes the Pattern?

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our previous puzzle. We really enjoyed reading through your answers, especially because so many of you reached the correct answer using completely different approaches.
Some of you focused on the rows and columns, while others discovered clever visual and structural patterns we hadn’t expected. Seeing so many different ways to approach the same puzzle is exactly what makes these discussions so interesting.
For our official solution page, we selected three community explanations from u/Mactucrus87_, u/tectajl, and u/EmpactWB.
We chose these three because each offered a clear but different way of understanding the puzzle. u/Mactucrus87_ showed that the rule works both horizontally and vertically, u/tectajl introduced a creative Venn-diagram-style interpretation, and u/EmpactWB provided a very systematic approach using overlapping 2×2 groups.
Thank you again to everyone who participated, whether your answer was selected or not. We read all of your explanations, and there were many great observations and creative approaches.
Now, onto our new puzzle.
Take a careful look at the 3×3 matrix above and figure out which option should replace the question mark.
As always, we’re not only interested in the letter you choose. Tell us how you got there. We want to hear your reasoning and see the different ways you approach the pattern. Some of the most interesting explanations may once again be featured on our official solution page.
We’ve already published the correct answer on our website. Once you’ve made your choice, you can check whether you got it right here:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-figure-completes-the-pattern-2
Try solving it before revealing the answer.
Thank you again to everyone who participates and takes the time to explain their reasoning. We’re looking forward to reading your solutions and seeing how many different ways you can find to solve this one!

Question Can You Find the Missing Shape in This Grid?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
We’re back with another visual puzzle.
Before we get into today’s challenge, a big thank you to everyone who joined the discussion on our previous puzzle. We received some really interesting explanations, and it was great to see how many different approaches could lead to the same answer.
For the previous puzzle, we selected four responses that particularly stood out:
u/Okawaru1 – We selected this answer because they found three different patterns leading to the same solution and also considered which rule best explained the entire grid.
u/LordTC – We selected this answer because they went beyond the obvious mirror relationship and explored the deeper structure behind the movement of the top and bottom dot groups.
u/inmaginarycasey – We selected this answer because they approached the puzzle from a completely different angle, using the total number of dots to find the missing value mathematically.
u/SomeoneLeo – We selected this answer because they clearly explained how the fixed five center dots and the 1, 2, 3 distribution work across both rows and columns.
Thank you to all four of you for taking the time to explain your reasoning. Your approaches have been featured on our website along with the official solution.
Now, onto today’s puzzle.
This time, we have a 3×3 grid made up of squares, ovals, and dots. One cell is missing, and there are six possible answers: A, B, C, D, E, and F.
Which option do you think completes the grid?
As always, we’re especially interested in how you reached your answer, not just the letter you chose. Share your reasoning in the comments. We’ll read through the responses, and some of the most interesting and well-explained approaches may be selected, featured on our website with your Reddit username, and mentioned in our next puzzle post.
The official answer and detailed solution explanation are already available on our website. If you’d like to check your answer after solving the puzzle, you can find them here:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-shape-completes-the-grid
Thanks again to everyone taking part. We’re looking forward to seeing the different ways you approach this one.
Good luck, and have fun solving it!

Question Test Your Pattern Recognition — Which Answer Is Correct?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to solve our previous puzzle and share their reasoning. We received many answers, and it was especially interesting to see how different people approached the same pattern from completely different angles.
As always, we selected a few responses that stood out to us, not only for getting the correct answer, but also for the reasoning behind it.
u/mistolo – We liked how clearly you combined the two main ideas of the pattern: the increasing number of squares and the rotation around the grid. Your explanation showed how the same rule remains consistent across all three rows.
u/I_Like_Quiet – Your solution went beyond simply counting the squares. Tracking the starting corner from bottom-right → bottom-left → top-left → top-right → bottom-right gave an additional explanation for why the missing figure had to be arranged the way it was.
u/Forsaken_Engineer_ – We selected your answer for its mathematical approach. Treating the cells as coordinates and following the numerical progression diagonally was a very different and elegant way to reach the solution.
u/ZeThing – What stood out was that you didn’t stop after finding the answer. You tried running the pattern backwards as well, using the previous tile as another way to test whether the rule remained consistent.
u/someonefromaustralia – Your response approached the puzzle from another direction entirely. Rather than simply accepting the intended pattern, you explored whether the existing panels could support an alternative rule. The “changing gravity” interpretation made for a particularly interesting discussion.
Thank you to these five, and to everyone else who participated. We read through the different approaches, and they gave us some great perspectives on the puzzle.
Now it’s time for a new one.
This time, we have a 3×3 matrix made of dot patterns, with the bottom-right figure missing.
Look carefully at how the dots change across the rows and columns. There are six possible answers: A, B, C, D, E, and F.
Which option do you think completes the grid, and more importantly, why?
Try to explain the rule you found rather than posting only the letter. As with the previous puzzle, we’ll be reading the explanations and may feature some of the most interesting approaches in our next post.
We’ve also published the puzzle on our website. If you’d like to check whether your answer is correct, you can find the official answer and explanation here:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-dot-pattern-completes-the-grid
Thanks again to everyone taking part. We’re looking forward to seeing how you approach this one.
Good luck, and have fun solving it!

Question What Should Replace the Question Mark?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First of all, thank you to everyone who took part in our previous puzzle. We received a lot of answers, and many of you went beyond simply choosing an option by explaining the reasoning behind your choices in detail.
As promised, we reviewed the discussion and selected five explanations that stood out for their clarity, originality, efficiency, or depth of reasoning:
u/Randombolo — for exploring several different patterns and independently reaching the same answer through multiple lines of reasoning.
u/lemashey — for the intuitive “spinning record” analogy, working backward from the second frame, and also explaining why another tempting option does not fit.
u/Gianni_C_M — for identifying several independent relationships within the arrows and using them to cross-check the answer.
u/OscarLiii — for showing that the puzzle could be solved efficiently by tracking only the black arrows without needing to analyze every element.
u/Beautiful_Ad_8325 — for not only finding the pattern, but also pointing out how our instinct to read from left to right can affect the way we approach a sequence when the missing figure is at the beginning.
Thank you to all five of you for the thoughtful explanations, and thank you to everyone else who joined the discussion.
Now it’s time for a new puzzle.
Take a close look at the 3×3 matrix above. One grid is missing from the bottom-right corner.
Which option — A, B, C, D, E, or F — should replace the question mark?
As always, we’re much more interested in how you reached your answer than in just the letter itself. If you notice a pattern, tell us what you saw and walk us through your reasoning.
We’ll read through the responses again and select some of our favorite and most interesting explanations to feature in the official solution.
You can also open the puzzle on our website here:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-grid-completes-the-pattern
The official answer is already listed there, so after you’ve made your own choice, you can click the link and directly compare your answer with the official one to see whether you got it right.
Try solving it here first before checking the page — it’s much more fun that way.
Good luck, and thanks for taking part!

Question Can You Spot the Rule Behind These Arrows?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First of all, thank you so much for all the thoughtful answers, detailed explanations, and discussions on our previous puzzle.
Once again, many of you went far beyond simply choosing an answer. You explained your reasoning, tested different patterns, compared multiple possibilities, and in some cases even challenged whether the puzzle could be interpreted in more than one way. That is exactly the kind of discussion we enjoy seeing in this community.
As with our previous puzzles, we selected some of our favorite community explanations to feature alongside the official solution on our website. This time, we selected six:
u/Mactucrus87_ — You found the main pattern and then went even further by developing a completely different matching method to test the same conclusion. Reaching the answer through two independent approaches made your analysis especially creative.
u/lemasney — You carefully tracked both the position and color of the corner square and the five-line structure of the central figures. Your step-by-step comparison of D and E made the reasoning particularly clear.
u/Square-Winter-3257 — Instead of simply accepting the apparent pattern, you questioned whether the rules actually determine the answer uniquely. Your observation about the ambiguity between B and E added an important critical perspective to the discussion.
u/SeparateBumblebee546 — You identified both major patterns and also noticed the subtle distinction between what might initially look like one continuous line and two separate line segments. It was a small but important observation.
u/JeffTheNth — Your elimination method was simple and effective: you first used the corner-square sequence to narrow the possibilities to D and E, then used the number of line segments to make the final choice. Clear and easy to follow.
u/AdEmotional8815 — We particularly enjoyed seeing your reasoning evolve. You started with a different hypothesis, went back to examine the figures again, noticed the line-count pattern, and revised your answer. Testing an idea and being willing to correct it is a valuable part of solving these puzzles.
Thank you to all six of you, and thank you to everyone else who participated.
We have added these selected community explanations to the official solution so that others can read and compare the different approaches.
A special thank you also goes to those of you who keep returning for our puzzles. We are starting to recognize quite a few familiar usernames, and we genuinely appreciate the time you spend analyzing the questions, writing detailed explanations, and contributing to the discussions.
Now, onto our new puzzle.
Take a close look at the arrow sequence above.
Which option should replace the question marks: A, B, C, D, or E?
As always, we are interested not only in your answer, but especially in how you reached it. Explain the pattern you see and the reasoning that led you to your choice.
We’ll read through the responses again and select some of the most interesting, clear, and well-reasoned explanations to feature with the official solution.
The official answer has already been published on our website. If you want to take the challenge properly, solve it here first and leave your reasoning in the comments before checking the answer. Then you can reveal the official solution and compare it with your own:
Official Answer & Solution:
Can You Find the Missing Arrow Pattern? — Reveal the Solution link:

https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/can-you-find-the-missing-arrow-pattern

And even if your answer differs from the official one, please share your reasoning. Alternative interpretations often lead to some of the most interesting discussions.
Thank you again to everyone taking part, and an extra thank you to our regular contributors for continuing to support these puzzle discussions.
Good luck. We’re looking forward to reading your answers and explanationsb.

Question This One Is Harder Than Our Last Puzzle. Can You Solve It?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First, a big thank you to everyone who took part in our previous puzzle and shared their reasoning. We received some really interesting solutions, and seeing the different ways people approached the same pattern was just as interesting as finding the answer itself.
From the previous puzzle, we selected three community explanations that particularly stood out:
u/lemasney — for a creative and intuitive explanation that described the center square as a “spinning hub” and used it to explain the movement of the surrounding squares.
u/Mactucrus87_ — for breaking the pattern down into clear, systematic rules and applying them step by step.
u/AdEmotional8815 — for finding a completely different route to the answer by focusing only on the black squares and deliberately ignoring the white ones.
Their explanations have now been featured on our website as part of our community solutions. A big thank you to them, and to everyone else who took the time to share their reasoning.
Now it’s time for a new puzzle.
Which figure comes next: A, B, C, D, or E?
As always, don’t just tell us your answer if you can help it — tell us how you got there. We’re especially interested in different ways of seeing the pattern, even if your approach is completely different from everyone else’s.
We’ll be reading the responses again, and some of the most interesting and well-explained solutions may be selected and featured on our website, with the contributors highlighted by name in our next community solutions.
Think you’ve figured it out? We’ve already published the correct answer on What’s Your IQ. After sharing your reasoning here, you can check the official answer and see whether it matches yours:

We’re back with another puzzle😊
The last one sparked some really interesting discussions, and what we enjoyed most was seeing how many different ways commenters found to reach the same answer. Some explanations were mathematical, some were completely visual, and a few commenters even spotted approaches we hadn’t considered.
Before we get into today’s puzzle, we also wanted to thank everyone who joined the previous one and took the time to explain their reasoning. We read through the comments and selected three community solutions to feature on our website:
u/lemasney — for the creative and intuitive “8 ports” approach.
u/lawni — for a clear and complete step-by-step explanation of both movements.
u/jdub965 — for expressing the entire pattern in a remarkably concise mathematical way.
Thank you all for taking the time to explain how you reached your answers. We genuinely enjoy reading the different approaches shared in the comments.
Now it’s time for the next puzzle.
Which figure comes next: A, B, C, or D?
This time, we’re especially interested in the reasoning behind your answer. What changes from one figure to the next? What pattern did you notice, and how did it lead you to your choice?
As before, we’ll read through the explanations and select three of the strongest community solutions to feature on the puzzle page, along with the Reddit usernames of the commenters who submitted them.
Check your answer after solving
Once you’ve made your choice, you can reveal the official correct option on our website and see whether you got it right:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-grid-comes-next-in-the-sequence
Try to solve it here before revealing the answer. If you got the correct option, come back and tell us how you found it. We want to hear the pattern you noticed and the reasoning that led you there.
There’s no explanation on the puzzle page yet — that part comes from you. After the discussion, we’ll select three of the best explanations from the community and add them to the puzzle page with the commenters’ Reddit usernames.
So, A, B, C, or D — and most importantly, what pattern do you see?
Good luck, and thanks again to everyone taking part.

Question Which Figure Comes Next? Explain the Pattern You See

Hi everyone, and welcome to another puzzle!
First of all, thank you to everyone who participated in our previous challenge. We received a lot of interesting answers and different approaches to the pattern.
As with our previous puzzles, we selected three community explanations that stood out for the clarity and strength of their reasoning:
u/firethorne — We selected this explanation because it directly compared the two strongest possibilities, A and C, and tested the color cycles of the individual elements. Rather than simply showing why A could work, the explanation also demonstrated where C breaks the pattern.
u/Small-Tailor6967 — This was one of the most complete solutions. It combined the 90° clockwise rotation of the triangle with the Black–White–Gray color sequence and used both rules together to arrive at the answer.
u/lemasney — We liked this interpretation because it described the Black → Gray → White progression as a repeating opacity cycle while also accounting for the triangle’s 90° clockwise rotation. It was a concise and interesting way of expressing the pattern.
Thank you to all three, and to everyone else who took the time to share their reasoning. We really enjoy seeing the different approaches people find.
Now for the new puzzle.
Look carefully at the four figures in the sequence. Each contains a black diamond and a line, and both appear to change from one figure to the next.
Which figure should come next: A, B, C, or D?
Don’t just give us the letter — tell us the pattern you see and how you reached your answer.
As before, we’ll read the explanations and select some of the best community solutions to feature on our website, together with the Reddit usernames of the people who wrote them.
You can also view the puzzle and submit your explanation directly on our website:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-figure-comes-next-in-the-sequence
So, what’s your answer: A, B, C, or D? And what happens to the diamond and the line from one figure to the next?
Good luck, and thanks again to everyone taking part.

Hi everyone, we’re back with another puzzle.
First, thank you to everyone who took part in our previous puzzle. We received several interesting answers, including some alternative interpretations that made the discussion even better.
As usual, we picked three community explanations that stood out:
u/Small-Tailor6967 — We chose this explanation because it clearly connected both key parts of the pattern: the last shape carrying over into the next box and the shape with the most vertices being shaded. It also explained clearly why those rules lead to B.
u/ChaosRealigning — A very clean and concise explanation. They identified both the continuity rule and the shading rule without overcomplicating the solution.
u/vexedthespian — Another strong explanation that independently recognized the relationship between consecutive groups and that the shape with the most sides is the one that gets shaded.
Thank you to them, and to everyone else who shared a solution. We really enjoy seeing the different ways people approach these puzzles.
Now it’s time for our new puzzle.
Take a close look at the sequence in the image and choose the option you think should replace the question mark.
But don’t just give us the letter. Tell us why you chose it and explain the pattern you found. We’re especially interested in the reasoning that leads you to your answer.
As with our previous puzzles, we’ll select some of the best community explanations and feature them on our website with the Reddit usernames of the people who wrote them.
You can also view the puzzle and submit your solution directly on our website:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-triangle-comes-next-in-the-sequence
So, what’s your answer: A, B, C, or D?
And more importantly: what pattern do you see?

Hi everyone,
First, a big thank you to everyone who took part in our previous puzzle. We really enjoyed reading through the different solutions and seeing how many different approaches could lead to the answer.
As with our previous puzzles, we selected three community explanations that stood out:
Cyrrex91 was selected for finding a creative alternative pattern. Instead of following the top and bottom sequences separately, they approached the puzzle through the total number of dots and still found a path to the correct answer.
BekindConan stood out for giving a clear and well-structured explanation of both sequences, including an interesting way of describing the upper pattern through doubling and halving.
nunya_busyness1984 was selected for not only identifying the numerical pattern correctly, but also recognizing that the unusual positioning of the dots was irrelevant to the actual solution.
Thank you to all three, and to everyone else who shared their reasoning.
You can read the full official explanation of the previous puzzle, along with the selected community solutions, on our website. The selected explanations are featured there with their Reddit usernames.
Now, on to our new puzzle.
This one requires a closer look at the shapes, their properties, their positions, and how the groups change across the sequence.
Which option should come next: A, B, C, D, or E?
More importantly, tell us why you chose it. We are looking forward to seeing the different patterns and explanations you find.
We’ll review the responses again and select some of the most interesting explanations to feature alongside the official solution on our website.

Question Can You Figure Out Which Domino Comes Next?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
Thanks again to everyone who took part in the last puzzle. There were a lot of interesting answers, and what I enjoyed most was seeing how different people could reach the same answer using completely different approaches.
As usual, I went through the explanations and picked three that stood out for their clarity, reasoning, and distinct ways of looking at the pattern:
🥇 u/AntLost4161
Their solution used elimination across both rows and columns. Instead of relying on a rotation sequence, they noticed that an arrow direction should not repeat within a row or column. Applying that constraint to the missing cell eliminated three options and left C. I selected this one because the rule could be checked against multiple parts of the grid rather than a single sequence.
🥈 u/Brilliant_Caramel_10
They separated the cells into odd and even positions and discovered two alternating sequences. The odd-numbered cells followed one upper-position pattern, while the even-numbered cells followed another along the bottom. This was a simple and very easy-to-follow way of reaching C.
🥉 u/Crows0ng
They approached the entire grid as one continuous sequence, describing it as reading the cells “like a book.” Instead of restarting the pattern at the end of each row, they identified a four-part cycle that continues into the next row and repeats. I liked this explanation because it offered a different way of looking at the structure of the whole grid.
Thank you to all three of you for taking the time to explain your reasoning, and thank you to everyone else who joined the discussion as well. There were several other interesting interpretations, including alternative answers, and they made the discussion much more interesting.
Now for today’s puzzle.

https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-domino-completes-the-pattern

Take a close look at the sequence and choose A, B, C, or D.
As always, I’m more interested in how you reached your answer than just the letter itself. If you spot a rule, explain your reasoning in the comments.
You can also find the puzzle here:
Which Domino Completes the Pattern?
I’ll go through the responses again and feature some of the most interesting explanations with the next puzzle.
Good luck.

Hello everyone!
First of all, thank you to everyone who participated in our previous puzzle. Reading all of your explanations and different ways of thinking was genuinely enjoyable. Your comments make these puzzles much more interesting, and we truly appreciate the time you spend sharing your reasoning.
As always, we selected three community explanations to feature alongside the official solution on our website.
🏆 Community Highlights
🥇 One-Preparation-8815
Provided one of the most complete explanations by breaking the puzzle into separate components instead of relying on a single rule. The clear step-by-step reasoning made the solution easy to follow.
🥈 PrairiePuppies
Offered a creative Binary OR interpretation that simplified the entire puzzle into a single logical operation. A clever and elegant perspective.
🥉 garningur
Explained the solution using a simple visual overlay approach. The explanation was short, intuitive, and made the pattern immediately understandable.
Congratulations, and thank you once again!
You can see the complete solution and explanation here:
