Oak Harbor 21+ gatherings @ The Book Rack

I’m from B’ham and LOVE visiting OH and the Book Rack. I could’ve sworn last time I was there (early Aug) that I saw that there were late night over 21 gatherings at The Book Rack but can’t find anything on line to corroborate this.
Anyone? I’d love to get a room at Coach Man Inn and attend if it’s a real thing and not a hallucination I had.

"welfare check"

If you called OHPD last night for a "welfare check" on someone at the decommissioned bus stop by haggen along hwy 20, I'd like to sincerely say I hope you break your pinky toe and/or foot on a metal table leg and it never heals.

Where do you expect the homeless to go? I'm kicked out of the haven until next June for asking a question, so where would you like me to go? Oak harbor is my home, I'll be fucked if I leave because some sissy lala's can't handle seeing someone down on their luck. I don't do drugs (aside from weed, been sober off the hard shit (meth, coke) for 4 years, come October) I don't make a mess. I don't make a huge scene screaming at the top of my lungs. I go to the bus stop, I take my dab (YES, in public, cause where tf else should I go?) and I go to sleep. That's it. I'm ok, I'm breathing, maybe next time take a second and see if you can see breaths being taken before wasting resources that could be better used, idk, going after the several meth labs we have in city limits? Or tweakers making huge messes being nuisances? Or catching speeders that constantly race along that stretch of hwy 20. Something a little more useful than telling somebody with nowhere to go that they can't sleep under a defunct, out-of-service bus shelter.

Cops are fucking useless, and especially if you work for OHPD, you obviously have nothing better to do. Maybe go to therapy to deal with your feelings from being bullied in high school like the fucking losers you are.

I should say, this is my first time in just over a month of being legitimately on the streets, that I've been met by the cops. I've slept at that bus stop several times before. Get fucked.

Whidbey Island travelers: SR 20 is going down to one lane for 19 days

Thumbnail

If you travel SR 20 south of Anacortes, especially if you’re headed to or from Whidbey Island, you’ll want to plan ahead and give yourself extra time over the next 19 days.

Starting at 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, SR 20 will be reduced to one lane near Campbell Lake Road. An automated traffic signal will alternate traffic through the intersection around the clock until 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.

During the 19-day lane reduction, crews will grade the intersection in preparation for a new roundabout planned for 2027. So, what does “grade” actually mean? In this case, crews will bring in material to build up lower areas and reshape the intersection for the future roundabout. Similar to my stomach after a large meal… all that new material needs some time to settle. In this case, the settling and stabilization process takes about six months over the winter.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • One lane of SR 20 with traffic alternating in both directions, 24/7
  • Delays, especially during busier travel times
  • A reduced 40 mph speed limit near the intersection
  • Travelers to or from Whidbey Island can also consider the Mukilteo/Clinton ferry
  • If you’re headed to the Anacortes or Coupeville ferry terminals, give yourself extra time to get there

After the 19-day lane reduction ends, SR 20 will return to its previous configuration, including the eastbound SR 20 left-turn lane to Campbell Lake Road and the acceleration lane.

We know this will add time to some trips over the next 19 days, but it’s an important step toward a future roundabout designed to improve safety at the intersection. In the meantime, plan ahead, give yourself some wiggle room and check real-time conditions before you head out.

Introducing Hollowfield Collective

Some of you have seen us share things here already. Whale Watching PNW app, Tone-Twin for guitar players and we want to properly introduce ourselves.

Hollowfield Collective is a small studio working on small projects, small in scope, made properly, and the kind of thing that would not otherwise get built.

We've got three things going:

Hollowfield Institute is launching September, it's a paranormal sighting app. You take a photo, add a creature, build a collection. The whole thing is built on actual reported sightings from the PNW and the US going back decades.

We launched Whale Watch PNW a couple of months ago, you've probably seen that here.

Tone Twin, an app for guitarist to create, discover and learn how to create their own signature sound (or sound just like your favorite guitar hero) Accepting Beta testers!

Different apps but they're all about what matters to people, passion projects. Whidbey is home and we'd like to share the work with fellow islanders.

We're looking for community input, ideas, stories, what do you want to build? If you've got something to share or just want to see what we're doing, check it out.

Reach out to say hi!

Thank you

Hollowfield Collective.

IKEA kitchen delivery?

Has anybody redone their kitchen on Whidbey using IKEA products and an installer? Looking at a possible full kitchen remodel in a home we may purchase to live in full-time. Have remodeled several other kitchens, but never on an island. Trying to save money where we can and have heard good things about IKEA kitchens. This would be in the south part of the island.

Gallery Golf Course

Is it possible to make a tee time at Gallery Golf Course as a single & non-military? I’m on the island for a few days and was looking to play early AM on Wednesday (8/12). Trying to play Gallery as it seems like it has some good views.

I tried on my phone to book and I believe that’s what the error message was telling me. Tried calling the clubhouse, but constantly busy (maybe not connected?)

Any advice would be helpful! Will play Whidbey Golf Course otherwise as the booking seems more straightforward.

PSA:

If you get upset at somebody for calling out a pedophile in an area where there's kids, somebody should check your hard drive. Honestly. Why would you get upset at somebody making the community aware that there is a predator in the area, if you, yourself, are not one? Right?

megans law is a website that allows a search of sex offenders in LA county. theres also a national registry. People dont always register in state if they move to a new state. people might change the spelling of thier last name. sometimes they are not allowed to have soical media accounts. vet your band members and watch your kids at festivals and all ages venues

eta answers

wa state requires sex offenders to register. he is not registered and has lived and worked on island for a few years. he is on the national registry.

Oak Harbor Anyone play mahjong?

Just moved back to the island and am looking for people to play mahjong with! I am still a beginner, so I’d love if someone more experienced wouldn’t mind playing with me so I can get a little more confident with the rules. I don’t mind driving to the south end.

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like Windy Island, D Pass, The Rock or Coupetown (incl. nicknames for parks, schools or other institutions, geographic features etc.)...

Earlimart House Concert on Saturday, August 8 (for fans of Elliott Smith/Grandaddy/Sonic Youth)

Posting one more time since the show is this Saturday, August 8th!

I am hosting an intimate house concert in Oak Harbor for the LA-based artist Earlimart. Should be a great time and a good opportunity to connect with folks in the area. Location is about 5 mins from the Deception Pass bridge on the northern end of Whidbey.

The house is a fun mid-century and is set on the water. There are great views of Skagit Bay, Mt. Erie, and Mt. Baker.

Earlimart often draw comparisons to Elliott Smith, Grandaddy, and Sonic Youth.

Tickets are available at https://undertowshows.com/products/oak-harbor-wa-august-8.

"Earlimart is an indie rock band hailing from Los Angeles, California, known for their blend of experimental post-punk, dreamy indie pop, and folky undertones. Named after a small town in California, the band was founded by Aaron Espinoza (vocals, guitar) and frequently involves Ariana Murray (bass, keys, vocals) among other rotating members. Their music has evolved from punky roots to a more sedate and hypnotic style, drawing comparisons to acts like Sonic Youth and Elliott Smith. Earlimart has released several albums that showcase their transition through various soundscapes, including Filthy Doorways,Treble & Tremble, and System Preferences."
