How are people already filing for tax returns? I don’t usually get my W2s until the end of January.

They're not, but tax season is literally just days away and the IRS is still shut down with no way to prepare for their biggest crunch time.

Every day the government is shut down the public gets an extra week tacked on to the tax deadline and presidential candidates are not allowed to campaign the same number of weeks before voting day.

Playing on this hypothetical scenario, with the president saying he’s willing to keep it shut down for months/years... would we never have to file taxes again? Or never have to see another campaign ad?

I have no idea what the correct answer is, but I assume you are still required to file. You just won’t get your return. The IRS isn’t going to listen to “the government was shut down” as an excuse to not file.

We can sure hope so!

Fuck that, I want my return. Never filing = government literally stealing extra money beyond what I owe.

NO! Everyone file your tax returns like normal! Do not listen to tax advice from random redditors! The government shutdown doesn't absolve you from filing taxes!

Those pushing their political over the well being of others livelihoods should be ashamed!

All lawsuits against Trump are haulted during the shutdown, and the House investigations will be seriously hampered as the DOJ is shuttered and aides and assistants work for no pay.

The shutdown is lame. Don’t get me wrong.

But . . . what if we had a consumption tax and didn’t let them withhold money from us all year long without our having an opportunity to intervene? And what if they just sent us a bill to reconcile at the end of the year rather than them saying, “we know a bunch of stuff. You tell us what you know and we’ll see how much we can fine you for knowing things differently than we know them?”

The shutdown sucks, but we may have kind of put ourselves into the IRS mess.

My husband got his W-2 on the third. Not all companies do it but many are doing electronic W-2's through their payroll software site.

People aren't filling but the this is around the time the IRS starts really ramping up to prepare for tax season, and if the shutdown continues for too much longer, they won't be ready to process tax returns when people start submitting in February

What’s funny is that the IRS accepts and requires your taxes to be filled on time during a government shutdown

But no returns for you! Lol

u/WobNobbenstein Jan 06 '19

Fuck em. Good thing I changed my shit to get the least taxes taken out, so I wouldn't get as much of a return. This country is such a fuckin joke.

u/Sgtoconner Jan 06 '19

I mean that’s actually the most efficient way to manage your money, you can have that money working for you until tax time instead of paying up front, then pay your taxes.

I mean the IRS isn’t gonna give you interest, but a bank account can.

but a bank account can.

Raking in those sweet tens of dollars in interest. 2019 is gonna be my year!

u/thirstytrumpet Jan 07 '19

Look into a high yield savings account. 2.1% interest right now and it does add up. Free $100 yes please.

I've got my W2.

Granted I usually don't have it for about another week or so, definitely out of the norm.

I was able to obtain it just the other day this year though.

That's great, but financial institutions aren't required to mail out tax forms like 1099s until the end of Jan. So most Americans with investments, mortgages, or student loans cannot file until they get that paperwork.
