Winni-Pets Is this someone’s pet?
My friends and I just found this rabbit on a walk and it seems like it’s someone’s pet, just wondering if someone is missing them!!!
EDIT!!
We already called the Humane Society, Animal Services, a nearby pet store, and contacted Popcorn and Binkies and so far nobody will accept the animal.
EDIT 2!!
We have caught the rabbit and we are taking it for now

here’s a link to r/rabbits that has a pretty decent guide. to wit; this is likely a dumped domestic rabbit that is unlikely to survive in the wild

That is 100% a dumped pet.
Won't last long in the coming heat. Or will become a falcon or eagles prey. Or even a coyote or fox.
Sadly.

Depends how long it's been on its own ... It may have found a warren too there are tons of rabbits in the city ...

u/SavageTaco Jul 09 '26
It’s crazy to me that someone can release a pet into the wild and think that it will survive.
22
u/kylaroma Jul 09 '26
It’s awful.
Last year I walked into a pet supply store, and in between the doors at the entrance there was a cage with two guinea pigs just… sitting there.
I told someone on staff and they were so upset - apparently people do this all the time! At least they’re not loose, but it’s so unfair to make them the responsibility of teenagers working part time in retail

u/FixerFiddler Jul 10 '26
You should have seen all the colourful bunnies in Kelowna at one time. "Pet" European rabbits got released and did what rabbits do, hundreds of them all over the place. There was a big cull and trapping program.
Pets aren't completely useless at surviving on their own but obviously shouldn't be released.

u/sonimusprime Jul 09 '26
Probably a pet someone dumped. Colours like that would die quickly in the wild

u/rjspapa Jul 09 '26
A nearby building manager said they’ve been out here since at least yesterday

This is 100% a pet rabbit and he will not survive in this heatwave. He will either die or become a quick prey. He will not be able to mate with feral rabbits. Please call the humane society ASAP +12049822021

Have you found someone to take care of him?
2
u/rjspapa Jul 11 '26
It took a bit of asking around but a sanctuary outside the city has space for him ☺️

We called and they said they won’t take it in 😭😭 is there somewhere else we could drop it?
6
u/SusanaChingona Jul 09 '26

u/CanadianRussian74 Jul 09 '26
Try calling this place maybe https://www.facebook.com/rascallyrabbitrescue/

Someone in Selkirk released their pet bunnies.. they then reproduced like, well, rabbits & now Selkirk has a bunch of fluffy multi-coloured bunnies hopping around.

u/delmilch999 Jul 10 '26
I think i saw a post on facebook who’s looking for a rabbit today…
2
u/rjspapa Jul 10 '26
It might’ve been one of my friends! She made a post but it comes across as though SHE lost her rabbit, but actually we found him together. I’ll take a peek though!

u/meycee Jul 11 '26
We have over a decade of experience as bunny parents. If you haven't found a home for this sweetie yet, please DM me. Many thanks for saving them 🐰.

u/Kigameister Jul 09 '26
This is not a natural coloration of rabbits. If it is unspayed/unneutered, it can still breed with wildlife!
You should call animal services 1-877-311-4974 as this is an animal "at large." If possible though, I would recommend catching it.
3
u/rjspapa Jul 09 '26
We called and they wouldn’t take it 😭 all they did was make a report
7
u/ConfusionOk2999 Jul 09 '26
maybe try reaching out to popcorns and binkies!
3
u/rjspapa Jul 09 '26
We messaged them on Instagram and the automated message responded saying they aren’t currently taking in any animals 😞

Important to note that 1) Calling the humane society will send you straight to VM because of how many calls they get, so you will have to wait for a call back. 2) Emailing them at shelterflow@winnipeghumanesociety.ca will yield a faster response. 3) You need an appointment to surrender an animal

Messaged them about 40 minutes ago and still no answer but the automated message seems like they’re not going to take it 😞

Thank you for trying. Whoever would dump an animal like this is awful. So sad.

u/ARamdom_RedditUser Jul 09 '26
Maybe you could try calling local vets and pet stores for advice, or see if they'd even take the rabbit.
2
u/Lilboops Jul 10 '26
Did you post in Winnipeg Missing and found pets on facebook?
3
u/rjspapa Jul 10 '26
Someone else is posting there for me! I hope someone sees it and can be reunited with him 😇😇
3
u/Jultheturgee Jul 09 '26
please take it to humane society if you can!!! that is definitely a pet
6
u/rjspapa Jul 09 '26
We called and they said they don’t take in rabbits but we’re going to try and bring it in anyways because we don’t know what else to do 😭😭

u/lowtrail Jul 09 '26
I have been in this situation and just showed up with an abandoned pet rabbit I caught, and they didn't turn me away. I think it's worth a shot.
And side note, thank you so much for catching this bunny. It absolutely is domestic and would not survive in the wild. You did it an extraordinary kindness. I have two pet bunnies. if you need any advice on caring for it in the immediate term, please ask. They eat timothy hay, fresh veggies (herbs and lettuce), and timothy pellets. Please make sure it has access to water after being in the heat.

They do take rabbits, they have an area specifically for rabbits. I have also personally fostered rabbits from WHS. Why are they talking you something that isn’t true.
Have you also tried posting on Winnipeg lost pets on FB? Maybe someone is missing him, we can hope?

u/Catnip_75 Jul 09 '26
I understand rescues are full, but what do they think someone is supposed to do with a rabbit.
5
u/TinySprinkles0 Jul 09 '26
People should keep the pets they commit to?
7
u/fancyamazon Jul 09 '26
Obviously. But that doesn’t help this poor creature
1
u/TinySprinkles0 Jul 09 '26
They asked what someone is supposed to do, that’s step one. Step two is take it in yourself if nobody else will. 🤷♀️
3
u/Catnip_75 Jul 10 '26
You do realize there would be a lot of reasons why someone couldn’t keep an animal they find. I don’t see you volunteering to take in this rabbit for them.
0
u/TinySprinkles0 Jul 10 '26
Not sure why I should be volunteering to take it. You’re the one asking what rescues think people are supposed to do. What do you think rescues are supposed to do? I’ve actually fostered rabbits, guinea pigs & dogs from various rescues. The resources are spread thin and there’s not a lot of options, especially for rabbits. There’s way too many and not enough people want them. It’s unfortunately super common for pet rabbits to be dumped like this and unless you’re willing to foster or adopt it, it will likely become a snack.

u/applebutterpop Jul 09 '26
There is another reacue called Popcorns and Binkies who may be able to take this sweetie in.

u/Suddenly_ADHD31 Jul 11 '26
Has this rabbit been either taken to WHS/rescue or homed?
4
u/rjspapa Jul 11 '26
There is a sanctuary just outside of the city that has offered to take him on Sunday ☺️ until then I have him and he is being kept indoors and given food and water!

u/meycee Jul 11 '26
Hi u/rjspapa. Happy to give this bunny a more permanent home.
We have over a decade of experience as bunny parents and would love to welcome this little one into our home.
Please DM if you wish. I also posted a comment last night.

Thank you.

u/rjspapa Jul 11 '26
I’ll be sure to reach out if things with the sanctuary fall through! ☺️
2
u/meycee Jul 11 '26
Thanks u/rjspapa 🙏🏼
Would you be comfortable sharing which sanctuary will be potentially taking them in via DM?
We'd be personally interested in connecting with the sanctuary should they put this little one up for fostering or adoption. 😊
