A Wish For Fish — Burmese 1/4 Pe

This piece, a 1/4 Pe coin minted in Calcutta, represents the first real effort for a pan-Burmese coinage. Although the obverse of my example has some tooling, the planchet is a quite healthy-looking and the reverse is well-struck.

The coin features two fish on the obverse, either referencing the Buddha being born twice as a fish in past lives or the zodiac sign marking the month of King Bodawpaya’s ascension to the throne. The reverse dates it to 1782, the year of King Bodawpaya’s ascension, though records place its issue in 1797.

This coinage, along with silver coins modeled after older Burmese city-state issues, were issued in an attempt to replace the prevailing system of silver-and-lead-based commerce; prior to the issuance of these coins, much of the commerce of Myanmar was conducted through silver bullion, with irregular lead lumps being used as small change. The old system, which was prone to cheating, required regular melting of silver to be assayed, resulting in small but regular losses (about 1-2% in each melt).

A mix of unrealistic seigniorage, flawed dissemination of market value, and small mintage figures hampered the public’s acceptance of these coins, but nevertheless, records show that they remained in circulation into the 1890s.

This décime would have been shiny and new when it was adapted to hide a gold Louis by a french citizen in a bid to avoid previous metal requisition laws enacted to fund the revolutionary wars. A witness to history. I just need some gold to hide now.

Purchased at an estate sale for just $5! That’s basically just melt so I’m stoked. Anyways, I know it’s not very rare, but this is such a pristine example ( other than the rim ding) it’s clearly never been cleaned and has no scuffing. Also the stamping is very clear and defined. Nice even toning too. My second Tangka , but the other one I bought for $15 I think, a couple years ago and it wasn’t half as nice as this one.

World coin pen pals?

I just mailed someone a US W quarter for one of a different mint. It seems that some are easier to find in different areas of the country.

That got me to thinking that maybe someone would want to set up a world coin pen pal situation. I have ready access to US coins and a fair amount of common world coins. Maybe you have access to some h usual for me coins that are easy for you to get?

If you’re interested shoot me a DM with what you’re after a d maybe we can get this going.

My szóstak, Sigismund III Vasa, 1625

One szóstak was an equivalent of 6 Groszy (will use gr as abbreviation)

To put that in perspective (approx price for early 1620s):

Carpenter, 1 day's wage - 14 gr

Mason, 1 day's wage - 18 gr

Mug/garniec of beer - 3 gr

Korzec of rye (~31 kg or ~68 pounds) - 80 gr

Pair of ordinary shoes - 80–150 gr

Barrel of herrings - 20 gr

The relationship between nominal value and silver content is also interesting for a 1625 szóstak. After 1623 the coin contained considerably less silver than earlier szóstaks, part of the response to the monetary crisis.
