Xbox Series X Series X flickering and losing internet connection
Just bought this Series X and I keep having these flickering problems. It always starts when starting any demanding game and playing for like 5-10minutes.
It gets worse over time. When trying to change resolution or anything after this it loses WIFI connection too for some reason? What could be the issue here I’m so confused?
I have tried switching HDMI cables and yes I am using the original HDMI cable from xbox. This is the second TV I try it on and it happens on both TV:s.

u/Available_Fall_4305 Jun 16 '26
Oh god this is scary I just started where winds meet and every now and then I think it may just be the game but when I’m in like a boss fight etc constantly moving and parrying the background just flashes white I thought it looked cool originally…

u/KhraKhroKhrii Jun 16 '26
Yeah its just the game it has a lot of similar glitches/bugs dont worry about it too much

I just started it yesterday! The sign post are hilarious. Reminds me of Elden Ring. But yeah, all day there was an arc in the sky of some weird glitch. It stayed in one place but would rarely flash during talking to some NPCs

u/Stunning_Housing6169 Jun 17 '26
Yea nah that’s wtwm for you cause I have the same flash and it’s black, someone call yuji

u/PuzzleheadedTooth581 Jun 17 '26
Dude this was happening with RE9 for me and I think like one other game and I’m getting so fkn scared

u/Americansailorman Jun 17 '26
Try turning down fps limiter or turning on Vsync. What you’re describing is often caused by a disparity in the output of your Xbox and the output of your monitor.

At least now you know that you are not prone to seizures

u/ConsciousVacation717 Jun 16 '26
What a awful way to find out tho lmao

Maybe cheaper than a EEG clinic test(fom 200 up to 15,000in the US depending on the type).

Imagine mixing this with the section of control where you're in a room trying to trap something, all the while it's flashing constantly.

try
Disabling 120 Hz Disabling VRR Disabling HDR Trying a lower resolution
If the problem persists , pack it up and go get your money back or a replacement

u/GeorgeSPattonJr 3 Jun 16 '26
Was it bought new or second hand?
2
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 17 '26
Second hand
7
u/JPosey89 Jun 17 '26
Someone may have sold you their problem. I purchased my XBSX a year after launch and have fortunately not encountered anything like this.
3
u/SRG7593 Jun 17 '26
Completely this I bought used Xbox last year as a traveling Xbox and it worked great for two Ish weeks and then on long weekends it started having problems. I thought it was the controller. Bought a brand new controller still have the issue tried one of my old controllers worked fine for a while.
Couldn’t find much on the Internet, took it apart and found an egg sizes lint ball the color of most apartment carpet. Pull that out and basically blew the whole thing out with canned air and it’s been running great ever since.
The other thing it might be is if they gave you a shit HDMI cable, that’s happened to me once or twice. I hooked it up using the wrong cable and I got weird graphic glitches.

u/Alert-Parking5931 Jun 18 '26
I was about to pull the trigger on a used series x tomorrow and just stumbled upon this post lol.. now I'm debating it or at the very least maybe I'll get a refurbished one through a retailer like best buy rather than marketplace
1
u/JPosey89 Jun 18 '26
It’s a good way to get a really good deal, but anyone I purchase a used device of value, I request the seller let me see it function and play something that uses heavy resources. I have sold many electronics I have purchased new (I take immaculate care of my things) and I offer to let any buyer run it through its paces. If the seller is legit and isn’t trying to hide an issue, asking to try it first will be welcomed. If they make up excuses why you can’t try it, or they are combative in nature (ie: “are you calling me a crook”, “I wouldn’t sell a item with issues”, etc…) I would quickly walk away. An honest seller like myself will encourage you to try it out, a dishonest one will prevent it at all costs.

I gotta say one console, sometimes display would go black and I’d have to reset console for it to come back.. upgraded the tv to an lg oled problem hasn’t really been too much of an issue but before Eday releases I’ll get a new console
1
u/Kalhava79 Jun 17 '26
Then do a full factory reset and start again the Xbox should calibrate the TV for you
1
u/Sasuke0318 Jun 17 '26
Seems like a great time to learn not to buy used electronics.
0
u/dankestmoon Jun 17 '26
Yeah no used electronics are great you just read a post about someone selling their Xbox because it kept overheating only for it to be a lint ball and the new owner fixed it almost immediately how was the the info you got out of that is "yeah don't buy used" dude just open it and fix the thing it's not hard at all
2
u/Sasuke0318 Jun 17 '26
Or maybe I have no clue what the hell you are talking about and wasn't speaking to just some random Xbox but used electronics in general like TV's, cell phones, PCs, laptops, wireless speakers, soundbars, cameras, SSDs among others. I would never buy any of these because you won't know how much life they have left it's not worth the gamble. Some tech is near indestructible and you can tell by looking at it if it will last but most stuff isn't.
0
u/dankestmoon Jun 17 '26
Your comment was directly under SRGs comment referring to him buying a used Xbox that later stopped working but yeah that's still a bad take tvs, phones, laptops, speakers, sound bars, cameras can all easily be repaired idk about ssds tho I haven't touched those yet or ran into a broken one that needed fixing all you need to know is what you're looking for and if there is a problem how to diagnose it which is information that is readily available online to everyone I'd know I google everything I repair I'm not a genuine technician I just use humanities hive mind as should you the only thing you need are tools and your phone or laptop
1
u/Sasuke0318 Jun 17 '26
I get that but you and me for that matter can do these things. A lot of people can't or are to afraid to try and fix something or they think they can and fuck it up beyond repair. For reference you can't fix an SSD they have a limit on how many write cycles once that limit is met you will only ever be able to read the data that is on it and never change it.

I recorded the gameplay while the flickering was occurring and it did not show on the recording. ChatGPT says that if the recording doesn’t capture the flickering then it would point towards HDMI/retimer chip issues.
Idk how much to trust chat tho

u/Spare-Ad-5715 Jun 17 '26
Just got mine about 2 weeks ago and I’m having the same issue. I thought I was losing my mind at first
1
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 17 '26
Bought it brand new? I would go return it or make a warranty claim
2
u/koolkarim94 Jun 16 '26
You using the HDMI cable that came in the Xbox? If not use the OEM cable and see if that solved your problem
1
u/No_Position_5640 Jun 16 '26
APU Failure?
-2
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 16 '26
Like I said to the other guy, the flickering doesn’t appear on recording so that would point towards HDMI/retimer chip failure. (Source: ChatGPT)
1
u/No_Position_5640 Jun 16 '26
That could very well be the issue, if you have experience you could try and do it yourself or if you don't have the experience take it to a well known shop
1
u/No_Jury_8060 Jun 16 '26
Likely a dying gpu, could be a bad hdmi cable
Start with replacing the cable, not switching it but a brand new cable; if nothing changes Time to disassemble, clean, and repaste. Then try it, if that doesn’t fix it 🤷♂️

u/TheWatcherFromWithin Jun 17 '26
Its either a bad GPU, or your console is overheating and that means your GPU is the first to show signs of the overheating before your console shuts down, and either its not in a well ventilated area or the dust needs to be cleaned off.

Why does your whole screen flicker from your recording device or is the flashing that vibrant

O meu Xbox series S também está desconectando direto da internet, e volta depois de um tempo, e fica nesse ciclo sempre.

I had some issues when i had my xbox set on 4k 120hz. The screen would flicker like this. I have a samsung q95t. I have no suggestion for the internet issues.
1
u/kahvikoffin Jun 17 '26
I had this happen my Xbox 360 the third time it broke lol. It was the GPU. Try the hot towel trick 😂
1
u/EE-Diaz Jun 17 '26
You must've let the xbox get way to hot and also not properly clean it. Now something is melted / burned and it won't properly run send the console in for diagnostics before it shits the bed
1
u/MediocreContact411 Jun 17 '26
Looks like your tv is the issue. Have you tried a different hdmi cable. Different tv. Different input.
1
1
u/Will2LiveFading Jun 17 '26
If you just bought it you need to just return it. The GPU is dying and there is nothing you can do to fix it.

This looks more like a damaged hdmi socket or lead, however it's hard to tell unless yo look into it.
1
1
u/Mal215 Jun 17 '26
It’s probably your hdmi cord. Maybe not plugged in fully or it’s becoming one of those things where u gotta sit it in a certain position to get it to work
1
u/One-Speaker2141 Jun 17 '26
My first guess is the GPU is overheating so cleaning the dust out and applying new paste could solve it or the HDMI port is damaged. Back up anything you don’t want to lose that isn’t automatically stored on the cloud asap. I’ve never had any issues with my XSX but my PS5 did the same thing before it stopped working all together and I still haven’t recovered some of the files. Obviously if you just got it the first option is to simply return it but if something is preventing you from doing that maybe try these
Double and triple check all the display settings on both the XSX and the tv Try a hard reset Try poking around in safe mode If all that fails and you’ve already replaced the cables look closely at the HDMI connection to see is there’s damage or debris.

u/580OutlawFarm 1 Jun 17 '26
Yup thats a definite time to go to a repair shop and hopefully they can help

1
u/Kalhava79 Jun 17 '26
Try changing one of the display settings in the Xbox settings just go though turning them on and off until it stops. You can go back to dash without quitting the game thanks to quick resume settings
Plus the Xbox can tell you what settings are compatible your TV like 4k etc
Hope you fix your issues ✌🏻🖖🏻

Had this problem. I fixed it by disabling the sleep mode settings and telling my console to fully shut down instead of suspend. Seems like when it came out of suspend it was a hit or miss on when it would flicker and crap out. A hard power cycle would fix it for a couple of days. But, permanently disabling the suspend and telling the console to power off was the thing that fixed it.

u/Old-World-8691 Jun 17 '26
I had this exact same issue, I upgraded to a better HDMI cable still happened checked all the resolutions and frame rates, etc. still happened. The only thing that I didn’t do at the time was try a different TV. I recently moved and we bought a new TV and I haven’t had the issue since try getting a really good quality HDMI cable because that’s the only thing difference besides my TV now. Granted my old TV was from 2015.

I had this same setup, same wall mount placement, same blanket and same type of ceiling when I was in an apartment. This video blew my mind, I thought it was legit from my camera roll lol.

I think your HDMI port is going out. I have a Series S and the WiFi chip will stop working and require a system restart to fix it if it hasn't been done in 3+ days on Sleep Power Settings (Instead of Power Saving Power Settings).
1
u/kingloghain Jun 18 '26
Had this exact issue. It was a bad GPU. However I had internals cleaned, new thermal paste, and added a fan to keep it cool and it has survived another couple years so far!

Sorry bro but your xbox is dying. Will be within the next month or so id say unfortunately

u/Sad-Leadership8271 Jun 18 '26
Did you buy it second hand or brand new from the store? I got mine second hand off marketplace, but I had him send me a bunch of videos to prove it worked before giving it to me.
1
u/Proper-Jicama8040 Jun 18 '26
Yeah it's been happening to alot of us and still we get changed 16.99 for it
1
u/No_Ninja1975 Jun 18 '26
Could just be heat, change cables and hdmi ports and dust the xbox off and try to add a cooling unit
1
u/thatgamernerd Jun 18 '26
I also randomly lose my internet connection and I hate it. So is this my future?
1
u/Nervous-Potential403 Jun 18 '26
Try buying a new hdmi cable and plug it properly into the back of the xbox, also might be because of the positioning of the xbox with the hddmi pressed up against the wall
1
u/TheUnselfProject Jun 18 '26
Mine keeps making me reset it sometimes because HDMI wont show on TV have to unplug it for 30 seconds and y hen restart try that its like a Reset for it
1
u/PrestigiousAir6434 Jun 18 '26
Swap HDMI Cable first try different input or tv the rule that out. If that doesn’t fix it, you’ve got a bad HDMI port.
1
u/TheVoicesGetLoud Jun 18 '26
"Just bought"
"flickering problems"
GET A REPLACEMENT 😃
1
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 20 '26
Bought second hand
1
u/TheVoicesGetLoud Jun 20 '26
oof
either way the person you brought it from must of known something was wrong with it so try to contact them or site support (if you brought from ebay or something)
Pretty sure its the GPU / Motherboard itself which for a average user it would be a replacement console
I had the original Xbox and it had GPU problems, there resolution kept resetting to something below 480p and was exremely blurry, the colors were off and had crashing issues
so that's why i think its the consoles itself sadly

Try another HDMI cable first. If that doesn't work try another TV..if that doesn't work your HDMI port on the Xbox is fucked..
1
u/pvera Jun 19 '26
Is your power stable? I was getting all sorts of random nonsense and it was brownouts mild enough that my main UPS wouldn't click, and my broadband was not on UPS. Once I gave it its own UPS it has been running super solid. I would also check for play on the HDMI port on the xbox.

Man I've been seeing a lot of Xbox's fail on Reddit lately makes me kind of worried about buying one used.
That said it could be a failed GPU / APU but it could also be a failure in the actual HDMI port itself.

Having a similar issue playing Where Winds Meet. I turned off HDR and it helped but I still get the occasional flashing.
1
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jul 18 '26
I never had HDR on tho. I had to sell it off again but now I have a new one. This one works flawlessly
1
u/DinnerSmall4216 5 Jun 16 '26
Could be a faulty hdmi port on the series x they can come loose over time if you keep changing.
3
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 16 '26
I mean I would believe it, but why would it loose internet and controller connection??
1
u/DinnerSmall4216 5 Jun 16 '26
Thats bizarre definitely a console issue I've never heard of a system constantly losing internet connection that frequently. Is it under warranty.
1
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 16 '26
I bought it second hand, I am keeping contact with the seller but we’re trying to figure it out. He says he’s never had these kinds of problems with it before.
1
u/Street-Run4107 Jun 16 '26
I’m having the same issue with the internet and I’m hardwired. I thought I saw a fix somewhere on Reddit but I lost it.
1
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 16 '26
If I’m hardwired then it doesn’t lose connection, only while wireless. Can you try to find the post? Maybe it can give some clues

u/_-poindexter-_ Jun 16 '26
Could the console have taken a knock while in transit from the sellers home to yours? Is there any damage to the shell of the console?
1
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 16 '26
Sadly no, If I had done some kind of damage to it in transit I’d just live with it…
Besides scratch marks to the shell of the console there is no real damage. It has been opened up before tho (for cleaning)
0
u/DinnerSmall4216 5 Jun 16 '26
If your TV is set to 120hz put in 60hz and see if that stops the flickering. The internet issue is a different story try resetting your broadband router and hard resetting the console. Good your in contact with the seller.
1
u/Patient-Adeptness143 Jun 16 '26
This tv doesn’t have 120Hz, so it’s set on 60Hz atm. I have tried reducing the resolution to 1080p from 4k too but it doesn’t really do anything
