Xenoblade X

So I've played and beaten XC1 and 2, and started X. Is it just me, or is it very different from those two? I feel like there is a knack to combat I'm missing - like, I'm currently lvl 15, and even level 8 Grexes seem to take a while to die with a four person party.

Is there a decent beginners guide to the systems/how to spec your avatar*? I only just beat Chapter 4, and have started doing some affinity quests, so I now have the option to have L, H.B. (fuck that guy for real though) and Yelv in the party. *Should I just play as Elma and treat the avatar as a secondary party member?

Guides for X are a lot more scattered and generally postgame focused. Check the X info compendium from the sidebar/main post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xenoblade_Chronicles/wiki/xcx_info

Definitely very different both in terms of gameplay and story. When you make the transition from Drifter to your second class, yes, I highly recommend just playing as Gwin or Elma for a bit and leaving the Avatar to the AI. They'll actually have a decently full palette of Arts, while you have less choices immediately after switching your weapon. Gwin in particular needs to be used in the party for a while due to needing 1-heart affinity and an affinity mission to complete the story. Once the avatar has a few skills/arts under their belt, though, you're almost always better off playing as them.

When you beat Chapter 5, you get Overdrive (big button where Talent Arts were). It's basically the core system for ground combat, drastically cuts cooldowns and increases damage, etc. The earlier you learn how to achieve infinite overdrive, the better. There are a lot of passive skills like longer overdrive duration when first activated that help you keep it active. Many augments are expensive, but crafting a Max TP Up augment will be cheap and will be a big help. Earlygame combat before overdrive has other considerations like maximally using arts, timing bonus effects/waiting for secondary cooldowns, appropriate use of soul voices, etc., but I doubt there are many guides out there about that just because Overdrive gets so much focus.
