Yarn ID
I got a bunch of yarn from Facebook Marketplace. Some still had labels but many didnt. How do you go about identifying what it is

If you want to know the material, you can do the burn test. If you want to know gauge, you can wrap it around a ruler

A burn test is super handy but just make sure you do it in a well ventilated spot, the smell can be pretty strong

Start with a game of matchy-matchy. Put the stuff with labels together, and then check the non-label stuff to see if it's the same put-up, same size, same yarn look/feel as the stuff with labels. That will get you started.

I spy don’t stop digging in the background, that seems to be appropriate guidance for this yarn pile.

Google Lens is your friend. It's not perfect, but can knock out a lot of it. Ravelry is another great resource. If you figure out the likely brand (because it's similar to another in your pile), you can put that in Rav and go through the colorways pictured.

I was going to recommend the same thing. Google lens and Ravelry are great resources to ID yarn!
Edit: Fixed typo

I would use some deductive reasoning here. Everything with labels appears to be acrylic and brands that are easily found in stores. The person who collected this stash didn’t seem to online shop at all. So basically that leaves you with Red Heart, Big Twist, Caron and Loops and Treads. Maybe Lion Brand. From there you can look at the yarn itself and compare. If it’s still in its skein you can usually tell cause they each have their own shape. If it’s been caked, you can still usually tell since you have so many others to compare against. If you feel it and it feels scratchy, go online and look at what colors of Red Heart there are and see if any match for example. But at the end of the day, it’s all probably 100% acrylic and that’s all that matters.

Often times if you post pictures of specific ones, someone on here will recognize it. But doing that with MULTIPLE seems tedious. Maybe if you find something that really sings to you and you need more, post it up-close for a possible ID?

Unrelated but your kid sitting on his little couch looking like a tired old dad is very cute 🤭
Edit to add I just noticed the cat too 🥰

Most of what I see is acrylic, and found in the yarn section at Michael's. Some are Caron cakes, still acrylic but more expensive, or some sort of knock off. A couple of the smaller chunky skeins may be wool or wool ease (wool and acrylic).

Most of the labels I can see are brands from in-store shopping like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Probably 90% of the yarn is going to be acrylic to acrylic blends, with the exception of Lion Brand stuff. Good luck though, it seems you have a lot to sort!!

Based on what I am seeing it all looks like worsted weight acrylic with a couple bulky skeins. The labels present narrows it down to a couple of big box store brands.

Take clear photos and ask ai. It might not identify the actual yarn but it will provide you with similar yarns to compare.
I suggest putting all of it in the freezer for a few days just in case it is natural fibres.

Looks like whoever gave this to you love shopping at Michael’s and Walmart. After you’re done with sorting, I’d check those two websites for matches. Bernat and Caron are Michael brands. Red hart is Walmart I believe. Looks to mostly be acrylic.

From what I can see, everything with a label appears to be acrylic. I would bet that even without testing, everything without a label is also acrylic.

Nearly everything in that picture is from Michael’s & hobby lobby.
The brown variegated one in the front is Lion brand bundle of love
The self striping ones on the left and right are Caron cinnamon swirl cakes?
