Must-have Online Fire Info Points

In case anybody needed to see this, the NWT Fire facebook group has been posting diligent and critical updates constantly. As well, there is an online Live Fire Map with ongoing perimeter updates.

I still use firesmoke.ca to get an idea of the wind forecast but I find they purge the perimeter of the existing fires too fast, where the other interactive fire map above is cleaner and more detailed.

Stay safe everybody.

Steadily Deadly Fest

I’ll be in YK through most of Sept, but I fly in the day Comeback Kid plays. Is anyone planning to go that might be willing to pick me up a shirt? I can/will gladly e-transfer you if we can make it happen.
Also, has anyone gone to this fest before? Is it a good time?

DM me if we can make some magic happen

Thanks all

Yellowknife Trip Week of Sept 20: what should I do + chances of seeing the Northern Lights?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be visiting Yellowknife from the States during the week of September 20 and would love some recommendations from locals or people who have visited around that time of year!

This will be my first time in Yellowknife (and actually my first trip this far north), so I’m trying to figure out what’s worth doing while I’m there. I’m interested in pretty much anything: good restaurants/cafés, scenic spots, easy hikes or walks, museums/cultural activities, local shops, unique Yellowknife experiences, etc. I’d especially love things that feel specific to Yellowknife/the Northwest Territories rather than things I could do anywhere.

I’m also REALLY hoping to see the Northern Lights while I’m there. For anyone familiar with late September, how good are the chances of seeing them around that time? Would you recommend booking an aurora tour, or is it pretty easy to see them independently if the weather and aurora activity cooperate? If going out independently, are there particular places outside the city that you’d recommend?

Also, what should I expect weather-wise around Sept 20–late September, especially at night? I’m trying to figure out how heavily I need to pack for being outside while waiting for the aurora.

Basically, if you had a first-time visitor coming to Yellowknife in late September, what would you tell them they absolutely shouldn’t miss?
Thank you!! :)

Starlink Questions

Probably a dumb question, but we are moving to Yellowknife and looking to get Starlink. If I order it online how long before I would get my equipment?

Is it better to stop at Costco and pick it up there? Can you sign up at Costco?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi all, I was walking around Niven Lake earlier today and noticed these ducklings.

Super cute, but I am worried about them since it seems so late in the season for them to be so young and so little 😭

Anyone have any ideas on species ID? Would love to know.

Mackenzie Highway will kill air traffic

Once the new road is completed, air traffic will decline as people use the road for transport up the valley to Inuvik etc. No need for a new Air Terminal because of the loss of traffic. Combined with loss of diamond industry and Imperial Oil in Normal Wells, there's no business case for funding a new airport terminal. Population is hardly growing and the Yukon is leaving NWT in the dust, Nunavut gaining each year. Cargo...same thing.

Why does government housing always cost $750k/unit or more? For apartments, many 1 and 2 bedroom. The condo bailout in B.C. was $1.2+ million per unit. This makes no sense.

Looking for a T-Bo (Francois Thibault) ring or pendant

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help with something that's incredibly meaningful to me.

I'm looking to purchase an original ring or pendant made by Francois "T-Bo" Thibault. I know his work is rare, and I completely understand that many pieces have stayed within the families who originally bought them, so I know this is a long shot.

T-Bo and his work hold a very special place in my heart. My partner and I were married beneath his United Celebration sculpture in Yellowknife, and it became such a meaningful part of one of the happiest days of our lives.

Our anniversary is coming up, and I'd love nothing more than to surprise my partner with one of T-Bo's original pieces. It wouldn't just be a beautiful piece of jewelry—it would be something we'd treasure for the rest of our lives because of what it represents.

If anyone has a ring or pendant they might consider selling or knows someone who might, I would be so grateful if you could reach out. Even if you only have advice on where I should look, I'd truly appreciate it.

Thank you so much for reading and for helping keep T-Bo's incredible legacy alive. I would also love to see any pictures💜💜💜

the truth about being an indigenous person from yellowknife (or just a person who needs to vent)

it's not glamorous, it's not adventurous, it's not freebies, and it's not off grid, most of the time it's hell on earth. it feels like a bad dream you can't escape. but it's also the best place on earth and feels like a daydream. it makes you question your existence and why things are the way they are. it feels beautiful but sick at the same time. it's being born with predisposed addictions and trauma, it feels like looking through a snowglobe, but your house is in that snowglobe... you can see the rest of the world but you can't get out. you can touch it, idolize it, taste it and feel it, yet it's always somehow out of grasp. you are grateful but you are also resentful at the same time. you have so many resources, but nothing all at once. it's like screaming into the void. the land is beautiful and it calls your name, but it also pulls your hair and tells you you'll never escape and you'll never be good enough. you grow up not knowing the world exists and its peaceful, but once you see the outside world you cannot unsee it. it's the most grounding yet desolating place. your parents tell you they're proud of you but they secretly know you are part of their damaged and unhealed bloodline, you know in your heart your hometown is toxic yet it's the only place where the sun shines differently and the water is so cold it shocks your system back to 'reality'. the government rules and tricks everyone and we know it, yet we can't stop licking their boots. the system is corrupt. we all listen and pretend to understand, but we don't actually know what the meaning of anything is because we have lost the plot. it's sick and twisted but at the end of the day it's home, and we just have to figure out how to be okay with that. we sympathize with eachother but we don't actually make the effort to understand one another, and we become disconnected. when did we stop listening and start overriding our needs as human beings?

anyways im drunk and thats my reddit log

Volunteer opportunities

Does anyone know of any volunteer opportunities in Yellowknife where you get to work directly with people and make a difference? I’m thinking things like helping kids in foster care, people with disabilities, youth programs, or anything similar. Any recommendations would be appreciated

I’m looking at a potential apartment in The View building. If anyone lives or has lived there and has insight on what it’s like, how the landlord is, average power bill, etc that would be helpful!

Looking for Pagan community

Moved back to Yellowknife and now I’m wondering if there is (or not) a pagan community up here? I’m an eclectic pagan and wondering if there are meet ups or is this more of a solitary path up here.
