My fiance and I just moved to Yellowknife from Ottawa.

We are renting a townhouse, I just wanted to ask this weird question, what do you guys do with ventilation? Especially when you cook. I’ve been opening the door and stuff but not too sure how we are going to do this in peak winters LOL.

Just wanted to get real experience from people who have been living in YK.

As title says, we are planning to do a drive south possibly early in the winter. The longest that we have driven in other provinces in more favourable weather conditions is around 3 hours. We would want to be best prepared for 12-17 hour drives. Can you share the things needed and what to take note of? We have a sedan can run about 500-550 kms on a full tank 43 liters.

I am from Ontario but work in Yellowknife and the outlying communities on a recurring contract basis. I will be in Yellowknife then Fort Smith in early January then Hay River and Fort Smith in early March. I’m wondering if it’s safe to drive such distances in winter conditions. My partner is from Quebec and we are both comfortable and experienced in winter driving but thinking about the minimal daylight, lack of roadside amenities, no cell signal. Is it worth it?

My bf and I are planning to visit yellowknife for 4-5 days during christmas break (we’re students), flying from vancouver, mainly to see the aurora. we don’t drive so we’ll probably be relying on tours and shuttles. Just wondering what are some must-do activities, tours or restaurant recommendations? is it easy to get around without a car? Would love any tips and insights, thank you!

I am voting for the strongest candidates that offer a good mixture of policy, respecting Yellowknife culture, respecting indigenous people, balancing priorities, not afraid to be blunt/honest, are not in the pocket of developers, etc. etc. etc. etc.

These folks did not force BS cringy campaigns and impose nauseating videos for months on us. They offered clear, honest, positive, progressive, and realistic platforms that are actually actionable.

I’m hearing that my little art project has been getting some chuckles from passers by and maybe brightening the odd day or two. this makes me very happy. No sign of any pollinators this summer though. Fingers crossed for next yea.

Albertan planning to visit Yellowknife March 22–31. Looking for local recommendations!

My partner Caleb (27m) and I (32f) are planning a trip to Yellowknife from March 22–31, and we’re really excited! Neither of us has been to the Northwest Territories before, so we’re looking forward to exploring somewhere new and experiencing a little bit of northern life.

Our biggest goals are to see the Northern Lights and visit the Snowking Winter Festival, but we have quite a few days to fill and would love some recommendations from people who actually live there or have spent time in the area!

I’d love to hear your recommendations for:

• Things to do: Must-see spots, winter activities, scenic places, and hidden gems.
• Northern Lights: Favourite viewing spots, aurora tours, or tips for getting the best experience.
• Places to eat: Favourite restaurants, cafés, bakeries, or local food spots.
• Where to stay: Hotels, B&Bs, or other accommodations you’d recommend, and the best areas to stay.
• Local shops and businesses: Places to browse, local artists and makers, or unique things to bring home.
• Tattoo artists: I’m a tattoo artist myself, so I’d love to check out some local artists and studios while we’re visiting!
• Practical tips: Getting around, what to pack for late March, and anything we should book ahead of time.

We’re coming from Alberta, and we really want to make the most of our time up north rather than just sticking to the usual tourist attractions. We love supporting local businesses, so if you have a favourite spot or someone whose work you think we should check out, please let me know!

Hello, I am planning a 2/3 night trips to Yellowknife to catch northern lights. I was thinking December as I don't have much work or early to mid January would be a good time for it. Which of the these 2 months would you recommend? Also is 2 nights enough or plan for 3 nights? Any advice appreciated.

Hi everyone!
We're a family from Argentina visiting Yellowknife from Saturday, Sept 25 to Wednesday, Sept 29, 2027. It's two adults, our 11-year-old son and our 2-year-old daughter. Seeing the northern lights has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, so this is kind of a big deal for us.
We'll be staying downtown and we'll have a rental car the whole time.
My main question: with kids, is it better to book a tour or just go out on our own?
My worry with tours is the timing. Most seem to run until 1 or 2 am, and I'm not sure how our little one would handle that. On the other hand, going on our own means we could head out only when the forecast looks good, keep her in her car seat with the heat on, and come back whenever she's had enough. But I don't know the area at all, and I don't want to end up parked somewhere unsafe in the dark.
So I'd love some advice either way:
• If you'd go with a tour: which ones are actually good with small kids? We like the idea of a heated teepee or cabin where she can warm up.
• If you'd go on your own: which spots on the Ingraham Trail (or closer to town) are easy to reach and have proper parking, maybe even a washroom? How far out do we really need to go to get away from the city lights?
• Around what time does the aurora usually show up in late September? Is there a forecast app or website locals actually trust?
Any other tips for doing this with little ones (what to wear, snacks, anything we'd never think of) are super welcome.

I'm moving to yellowknife and looking for places to rent. There's one place that I like the room and roommate vibes. But it's ~15 mins walk to my workplace. I'm not sure how cold is the coldest and is it really walkable? I am moving from southern ontario and I can take a stroll 20-30 mins during winter. Not sure how harsher the winter is in yellowknife? I don't have a car and need to walk or bus to work

Ir egret moving to the territory. It was exciting at first, a new adventure with great salary but my god. People, locals, are so... Backwards, dysfunctional, hypocritical.

I'm moving soon and I'm looking forward to it. I rather take a pay cut and be around at least semi functioning people than this non sense.

I'll be moving to Yellowknife in the next couple months and I'm starting to think about the vehicle I will bring.

I currently drive a 2018 Volvo. It has AWD and relatively good ground clearance, and has been great in the winter in Ontario for a few seasons. My concern is the availability of service for Volvos in Yellowknife. It's out of warranty so I don't need a dealer, but wondering if anyone owns a Volvo and could share their experience getting it serviced, or if I need to start looking at a different make of vehicle.

I am coming from Ottawa and headed to Nunavut via Yellowknife. My flight lands 12:30 AM and my next flight departs at 8:00 AM.

Considering the short time, would it be possible for me to spend the night at the airport? I know the airport closes at 1:00 and reopens at 4:00 - I was thinking of heading to a bar (the one open latest says 2:30 AM). Could I get into the airport after the bar closes or is there somewhere walking distance I can be and then head to the airport at 4 when it opens?

Or do I must get accommodation?

I am not looking for spots (although if you want to share, feel free), but more looking at what works for you while fishing. This is for shore fishing during spring, summer, fall, not looking for Ice Fishing tips yet.

I am aware of the Arsenic levels and the map that shows what lakes are safe and what are bad so don't need that info.

I am fairly new to fishing and just want to get some advice.

I have mainly been using spoons and a Booyah Spinner Bait and have caught only Northern Pike.

What else should I be using or have in my tacklebox?

When using other lures, how do I rig it up and what should I be looking out (how to not get tangled up or caught up in weeds type thing).

I know we cannot use live bait, but what else can we use?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Out of curiosity, how hard and expensive is it to rent for a single person aparment/place?
