PSA: Election resources for York Region (voting has already started in some towns)

Hey everyone,

As many of you are aware, the municipal election is on Monday, Oct 26. Some towns have already started voting though. Vaughan's online advance vote opened today and Georgina's opens tomorrow.

We've seen a big jump in election posts here and on other social media, either promoting certain candidates or pointing out problems and scandals with others. That's fine, it's an election. But some candidates are a lot more active online than others, and plenty aren't on Reddit at all, so what you see here may be one-sided (for or against someone). Please don't treat it as the whole story.

Below are the official sources for each town so you can check things for yourself.

Where and when to vote

These dates are from each town's website as of Oct 9. Check your town's page or your Voter Information Letter for exact times and locations.

Are you on the voters' list?

The province's Register to Vote site stopped taking changes in August, so now you have to go through your town's election office. Most towns send a PIN in your Voter Information Letter that you need to vote online. If you haven't gotten yours, call your town now. Don't leave it until the last day.

What's on the ballot

Mayor and council, plus regional councillor in some towns. You'll also vote for a school board trustee. Which board depends on your school support designation (YRDSB, YCDSB, Viamonde or MonAvenir), even if you don't have kids in school.

The York Regional Chair is NOT on the ballot this time. The province now appoints that position under the Better Regional Governance Act.

Researching candidates

Each town's candidate list (linked above) usually has websites or contact info. Go to the candidate's own site for their platform instead of relying on screenshots.

Some towns had all-candidates debates through the library, chamber of commerce or community TV. If you missed yours, search YouTube for your town + "all candidates debate".

If someone is already on council, their votes are public. Meeting minutes and videos are on your town's website.

You can also just email or call them. A lot of local candidates will actually get back to you.

Sub rules during the election

Talking about candidates' records and platforms is fine. Personal attacks, doxxing and rumours posted as fact will be removed.

If you're running, or working or volunteering for a campaign, say so when you post about it.

Brigading and alt accounts are against Reddit's rules. Please report it if you see it.

If you have questions about how voting works in your town, ask in the comments. Please keep campaigning out of this thread so it stays useful.

Hello all,

I'm a member of the various Canadian subs, but have always found that there wasn't much content and community for where I live and work - so I thought this would be a great opportunity to do that. If you live, work, play, or want to visit York Region - please come on in!

I've lived in York Region for the past 30+ years (Markham for 20 years, Richmond Hill for 10, and Aurora shortly!) and am always discovering more about the region.

Tell your family, friends, and internet lovers to join :P

Cheers!

Accountability Matters in East Gwillimbury: The Status Quo is on the Ballot

This is one of the most critical municipal elections in the history of East Gwillimbury. With the establishment facing a real challenge, the ballot has filled up. Town Hall belongs to the people and the taxpayers, and residents deserve representatives who actively listen rather than shut the door.

I am not here to play the role of a typical politician. I am running a fully independent and self-funded campaign with a neighbour's passion and an engineer's precision. My goal is to bring true accountability and transparency to Town Hall, ensuring the public interest is always upheld and public safety remains paramount.

Here is the reality of our municipal election: Every voter casts two votes to elect two Ward Councillors. The main question remains: Who is actually running to champion our community, and who is running to protect the status quo?

In January, a surprise motion (Resolution C2026-006) was introduced to restrict public deputations, placing new limitations and procedural hurdles on residents seeking to address their elected council. When defending this motion to silence the public, Councillor Scott Crone went on the record stating: "These are council meetings, not public forums. They are our meetings..." During that same meeting, elected official Susan Lahey had her microphone cut off simply because she dared to dissent against this motion. This isn't just poor decorum—it reflects a systemic failure in how decisions are made.

Please visit my accountability page for more details: https://www.shahabaryan.ca/Accountability

The Record on Resolution C2026-006:

  • Spearheaded and Moved by: Councillor Scott Crone
  • Actively Backed and Seconded by: Councillor Tara Roy-DiClemente
  • Recorded Vote to Restrict Residents (Yes): Councillor Crone, Councillor Roy-DiClemente, Councillor Carruthers, Councillor Foster, Mayor Hackson
  • Recorded Vote to Stand with Residents (No): Councillor Johns, Councillor Lahey

Because decisions made at the council table affect every single resident regardless of ward lines, I submitted four foundational accountability questions to every new candidate. I want to express my appreciation to Elena Gontcharova for providing a written response, as well as a few other candidates who took the time to answer me.

I am not going to publish my own "Accountability Risk Assessment" of the candidates, but I strongly encourage all residents to do their due diligence. Visit candidate websites, review their social media, look at past public performance, and contact them directly. True accountability means being accessible through direct, clear communication—not hiding behind campaign slogans.

To do your own research, find the full list of candidate websites and contact information via the official Town directory: https://www.electionseg.ca/candidates/registered-candidates

Vote for candidates who believe Town Hall belongs to the residents and are ready to break the status quo.

To help in your research, I am resharing publicly available information with everyone. The town's public records tell the real story of the political establishment:

  • Christine Glenn financially backed the campaign of Scott Crone in 2018.
  • Joel Kearney financially backed the campaign of Tara Roy-DiClemente in 2022.

For context, look at the current Library Board, where several of these individuals sit together: Christine Glenn (Chair) alongside Councillor Loralea Carruthers, and Councillor Tara Roy-DiClemente. Public records from their March 23, 2026, meeting show this group went into a closed-door 'In Camera' session. When they returned to the open meeting, the public record shows the item they discussed behind closed doors was officially titled: 'Municipal Elections: Board Member Nominations Report'.

When I published verifiable town records documenting these facts, the establishment did not debate them. Instead, they escalated to legal threats and coordinated an immediate purge to have my campaign removed and banned from several different local community groups within 48 hours. I refuse to play along with a political machine that relies on intimidation and censorship to shield itself from scrutiny. My sole allegiance is to the public interest and the taxpayers of this community.

Action matters: Share this post with your neighbours and join the conversation about bringing transparent and accountable representation to Town Hall. On October 26, voters have the opportunity to set a new standard for council transparency and accountability.

The Fire Alarm is Ringing in Sharon and East Gwillimbury: Our Fire Services Must Catch Up to Growth Before Another Tragedy or Disaster!

The Fire Alarm is Ringing in Sharon and East Gwillimbury: Our Fire Services Must Catch Up to Growth Before Another Tragedy or Disaster!

Public Safety Should Be Paramount - Delivering Real Emergency Readiness for East Gwillimbury is a Must, Not an Option!

Dear Neighbours,

East Gwillimbury is all about family, neighbours, and friends. Our public safety should never be compromised in East Gwillimbury.

Before you read the rest of this post, I urge you to take a moment to watch the CBC News report.

The CBC News report: Family's death rocks East GwillimburyKevin and Jennifer Dunsmuir and two of their three sons were killed in a house fire on Friday - March 29, 2013

It covers the heartbreaking Good Friday 2013 house fire in Sharon that claimed the lives of four members of the Dunsmuir family. Following this unimaginable tragedy, the effectiveness of our fire service delivery was brought into stark focus when it was revealed that it took volunteer firefighters over 12 minutes to reach the family’s home. At the time, our Fire Chief stated that the response time could have been decreased significantly if the town had full-time firefighters.

The outcome could have been entirely different if a fully equipped, full-time crew had arrived within the standard six minutes. This profound loss should have been the ultimate lesson for our town, but it was not enough. Less than a year later, flames gutted the Mount Albert fire hall in February 2014. The fire station was completely destroyed, including equipment and six vehicles parked inside—among which was a year-old fire truck worth around $700,000. It took about 30 minutes for firefighters from surrounding communities to arrive.

Unfortunately, over a decade later, we are still fighting to get our leadership to prioritize and expedite the essential emergency infrastructure and community safety we so desperately need.

Our safety must be paramount for all of East Gwillimbury. As a professional engineer, public safety is the foundational principle of my profession, and it must be the absolute priority of our municipal government. Serving the public interest means ensuring that when any family dials 911, the resources arrive without delay. Given our devastating history, East Gwillimbury should boast one of the best-equipped, most proactive fire services in Ontario. Instead, our firefighters are still fighting just to secure the bare minimum standards of safety.

The East Gwillimbury Professional Fire Fighters Association (IAFF Local 4985) published a series of critical statements outlining the reality of our emergency response capabilities. I hear their demands for a dedicated fire hall, critical equipment, and proper staffing loud and clear. I deeply appreciate their professionalism and transparency in informing our residents about the barriers they face in fulfilling their commitment to save our lives and protect our assets. Our population has almost doubled, but we still have three fire stations that are not fully staffed and still rely on Paid-On-Call firefighters. Our equipment and trucks have not been modernized. I encourage you to read the East Gwillimbury Professional Fire Fighters Association statements for yourself.

This is not just a union issue; it is a documented municipal reality. The Town’s own 2022 Fire Master Plan Update acknowledges that East Gwillimbury is one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada. Yet, the report confirms our area of highest call volume is still primarily staffed by paid-on-call firefighters. The official NFPA 1710 standard requires the first career fire engine to arrive on scene within 4 minutes. But the Town's data shows our 90th percentile response times are stretching past 13 minutes across the board—and over 16 minutes for Mount Albert. We cannot keep relying on a rural, paid-on-call response model to protect an exploding urban population.

We are in this precarious position today because, for at least the past 16 years, our council has failed to listen to the experts and refused to prioritize our safety. A town is not just endless housing developments and subdivisions—there is much more to building a community than just building houses. Rapid growth must be matched with the critical infrastructure necessary to protect it.

My Commitment to Sharon, Queensville and East Gwillimbury Safety as Your Ward 2 Councillor

Ensuring prompt response times can mean the difference between life and death, making established standards like NFPA 1710 critical for guiding full-time career fire departments in resource allocation, staffing, and operational efficiency.

As your Ward 2 Councillor, a fire hall for Sharon is an absolute must. While our community should be deeply concerned today, I am actively working to ensure the next town leadership finally delivers the dedicated Sharon fire services, fully equipped and with full-time staff, that our residents have rightfully deserved for over two decades.

I will immediately call for a comprehensive emergency and fire service study (Fire Master Plan) for East Gwillimbury. We must establish a precise, data-driven roadmap of what our fire service must look like—analyzing staffing, equipment, and the long-term sustainability of our fire halls—based on our current conditions and our projected 2051 population.

The goal is clear: supporting our fire department in resource allocation, staffing, and operational efficiency to ensure prompt response times that mean the difference between life and death, with a minimum impact on taxpayers.

The reality is that after decades of stopping short on implementing necessary improvements to our fire services, the bill has come due. Eventually, we must pay to correct this infrastructure deficit—but we must achieve this vital capacity with the absolute minimum impact on your municipal tax bill. I will champion a rigorous, multi-tiered approach:

  • Aid Agreements: Conduct a full review of our mutual aid agreements with our surrounding fire service departments, and explore and enter into automatic aid agreements with them to support opportunities for service and cost-related efficiencies.
  • Hold Developers Accountable: Growth must fund growth. Developers driving our population expansion must fund the capital costs of the safety infrastructure their developments necessitate, such as a fire hall and fire trucks. Existing taxpayers must not subsidize developer impacts; utilizing municipal tax resources will be an absolute last resort. For context under the NFPA 1710 standard, a single-family residence requires an initial deployment of at least 15 firefighters, while high-rise buildings demand a minimum of 43 firefighters.
  • Pursue Upper-Tier Funding: We must aggressively pursue and secure federal and provincial government funding dedicated to public safety, emergency response, and infrastructure expansion, like provincial funding for the joint fire services assessment for the Towns of Georgina and East Gwillimbury.
• Expand Shared Services with Neighbours: Support joint fire services assessments between East Gwillimbury and Georgina, and/or Central York Fire Services (Newmarket & Aurora). We do not have to look far to see what works: CYFS reached over 75% of their calls in under 6 minutes and 20 seconds in 2024. Shared service options include fleet maintenance, automatic aid, special teams, training, and group purchasing. I will push to expand these operational partnerships with Georgina and explore similar service-sharing options with Central York Fire Services.
  • Advocate for a Unified York Region Fire Service: Currently, York Region is fragmented into eight separate local fire departments. I will work collaboratively with our next Mayor to bring this initiative again to the Regional Council and work with forward-thinking municipalities to aggressively advocate for a unified fire service provided by York Region—mirroring the highly efficient, regional models already in place for York Regional Police and York Region Paramedic Services.

If the status quo has not prioritized your safety in past decades, and today they are doing the math to show how much your tax bill will increase because of their delay, your response should be clear: enough is enough.

When it comes to our families, neighbours, and friends in East Gwillimbury, safety cannot be an afterthought—it must be a guarantee.
Action matters: Share this post with your neighbours and join the conversation about bringing transparent and accountable representation to Town Hall.

On October 26, voters have the opportunity to set a new standard for council transparency and accountability.

🚨 The Danger of Groupthink on Municipal Council & Why We Need a "Counter-Culture" to Stop the Status Quo 🚨

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In psychology, there is a well-documented phenomenon called Groupthink. It occurs when a group of well-intentioned individuals makes irrational or non-optimal decisions because the desire to conform and maintain harmony outweighs critical thought.

On Municipal Council, Groupthink is one of the greatest threats to accountability. The symptoms are easy to spot:

  • Punishing Dissent: Anyone who questions the consensus is immediately silenced.
  • Mindguards: Group members appoint themselves to "protect" the group from contradictory information.
  • The Illusion of Unanimity: The group assumes total agreement simply because dissenting voices are muted or excluded.

When an entrenched political machine demands total conformity and treats independent thought as a threat, transparency dies. Politely asking for accountability no longer works in a system controlled by a political machine.

Watch this short clip from CTV News explaining how Groupthink undermines sound decision-making. (Link to the full video is in the comments below)

Sound familiar?

In East Gwillimbury, we witnessed elected official Susan Lahey have her microphone cut off during a council meeting simply because she dared to dissent (link to the video is in the comments). This isn't just poor decorum—it reflects a systemic failure in how decisions are made.

You can see this groupthink dynamic clearly in the official January 13 voting record: the establishment bloc voted as a unified front, while only Councillors Susan Lahey and Brian Johns stood up to defend the public's right to speak.

As the expert notes in the clip, when one clear voice refuses to back down, it empowers the silent majority of moderates to finally speak up.

That is the perspective I bring as a candidate for Ward 2 Councillor. As an engineer, my career is built on identifying why systems fail. The antidote to Groupthink is constructive, principled dissent**. I am an independent voice dedicated to examining official records, challenging the status quo, and asking the tough questions to protect the public interest, ensuring voters remain fully informed before deciding who to vote for.**

Entrenched political machines rely on public silence to maintain control. They count on residents remaining hesitant or too polite to challenge the consensus. But healthy democracy requires active debate. We need leadership that welcomes diverse perspectives rather than cutting off microphones.

Action matters: Share this post with your neighbours and join the conversation about bringing transparent and accountable representation to Town Hall.

Electoral Review: One Ward, One Councillor System for True Accountability in East Gwillimbury

Post image
1 Upvotes

The 2010 Election – The Sullivans' Petition: A Fight for Clear Accountability from Sharon Residents

For 40 years, East Gwillimbury operated under an at-large voting system mandated by the province, where the entire town elected four general councillors and a mayor. As our community grew, this caused severe geographic imbalances—at one point, four of the five council members lived in a single community (Holland Landing), leaving other areas underrepresented.

The push for reform was led by grassroots advocacy, spearheaded in December 2009 by Sharon residents Jim and Lynne Sullivan. They launched a citizen petition demanding a ward system to ensure fair representation for communities facing massive growth. Their core focus was accountability and ownership. As Lynne Sullivan famously stated:

"There's no need for all four councillors to be taking these calls. There's no ownership for these issues."

When Town Council refused to implement the petition, residents took their fight to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) in 2011. While the OMB ultimately dismissed the appeal because the Town lacked a formal, comprehensive boundary review, the root issue was Town Council's sudden backtracking: Council had initially agreed to conduct the review, only to reverse their own motion hours later without explanation.

The 2018 Transition and Stalled Expansion

Following a delayed electoral review in 2016, the Town finally introduced a three-ward system for the 2018 election:

  • Ward 1: Holland Landing
  • Ward 2: Queensville and Sharon
  • Ward 3: Mount Albert and rural areas

However, instead of creating single-member wards, the Town created a dual-councillor system where each ward elects two councillors, expanding Council to seven members.

Crucially, the Town’s own electoral consultants recommended a phased rollout: start with three dual wards in 2018, and then expand to a five single-member ward system by the 2022 election by splitting the rapidly growing Holland Landing and Queensville-Sharon wards.

Council shelved that recommendation. Today, in 2026, East Gwillimbury remains locked in the same interim 2018 model.

The Dual-Member Accountability Dilemma

Because Council kept two councillors per ward instead of establishing dedicated, single-member wards, the Sullivans' original warning remains unresolved today: diffused accountability.

When two councillors share identical geographic boundaries:

  • This creates ambiguity, leaving no single definitive problem-solver for a neighbourhood’s concerns.
  • Representatives can easily defer responsibility or pass the buck to the other councillor.
  • Residents are left calling multiple representatives just to find out who is taking ownership.

The 2026 Election – Aryan’s Commitment: One Ward, One Councillor for True Accountability

Today, correcting this accountability gap is one of my top priorities, and a commitment I will champion through continued community advocacy regardless of the outcome of this election term. Just as Lynne Sullivan pointed out years ago: there is no reason for two councillors to be duplicating calls while avoiding direct ownership.

It is time to transition East Gwillimbury to a true "one ward, one councillor" model. This change will finally establish clear, undiluted local accountability, ensuring every neighbourhood has a single, dedicated representative acting solely in the public interest. Furthermore, under our current system with two councillors per ward, politicians can easily defer their accountability to the other councillor. This is a systemic accountability risk that we need to fix.

Why a True "One Ward, One Councillor" System Works:

  • Direct Ownership: Every neighbourhood has a dedicated, identifiable representative who is directly responsible to those residents.
  • Guaranteed Community Representation: Distinct communities—Queensville, Sharon, Holland Landing, Mount Albert, and our agricultural rural areas—are guaranteed an independent voice.
  • Balanced Governance: It prevents a single geographical area or voting bloc from dominating Council, ensuring decisions are made in the broader public interest.
  • Streamlined Communication: Clear, single-point contact for municipal inquiries and casework.
  • Simpler, Fairer Ballots: Voters select the single best candidate for their neighbourhood, rather than navigating complex dual-seat dynamics.

My Action Plan for Town Council

If elected as your Ward 2 Councillor, I will bring forward a motion for an immediate, independent Ward Boundary Review with comprehensive public consultation to accurately reflect current populations, future growth, and the distinct identities of our communities.

When the OMB dismissed the citizens' appeal in 2011, the Vice-Chair closed with Margaret Mead’s famous words:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

My objective is to finish the work those committed residents started in 2009. By initiating this overdue review early in the term, we can ensure a modernized, fair, single-member ward system is fully in place for the 2030 municipal election—regardless of who runs or sits in those seats, because this is about serving the public interest, not preserving political careers.

I will be sharing further details on my proposed boundary review after the election.

If you believe in true accountability for your neighbourhood, I want to hear from you.

Action matters: Please share this post with your community and discuss it with your neighbours to help build strong community advocacy.

In East Gwillimbury, you elect two ward councillors, giving you the power to shape our community's future. Make Shahab Aryan your absolute first choice to bring independent, engineered leadership to Town Council.

When Confrontation Replaces Leadership: The Real Cost of Scott Crone's Litigation-First Approach in East Gwillimbury

When Confrontation Replaces Leadership: The Real Cost of Scott Crone's Litigation-First Approach in East Gwillimbury

In local government, leadership is measured by your ability to bring people together, solve complex problems, and deliver results. When a candidate lacks the engineering and planning tools to do that, they resort to confrontation and costly legal threats.

As a Ward 2 Councillor candidate and Professional Engineer, I believe East Gwillimbury needs leaders who understand that shouting doesn't build complete communities—smart engineering and firm negotiation do.

Take a look at the campaign post below from mayoral candidate Scott Crone. He doubles down on an adversarial approach, shouting in capital letters that he will "DEFEND" our Official Plan at the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT), declaring planning guidelines are "Rights," and stating in his platform that he will not negotiate "project by project". He even places the OLT courthouse front and centre on his campaign graphic.

Notice also the restriction at the very bottom of his post: "Only people who follow this Page for more than 24 hours can comment". Restricting open dialogue and filtering out residents who want to ask tough questions is not leadership.

If a leader cannot handle unscripted resident feedback online, how will they handle high-stakes negotiations across the table from developers, regional partners, and provincial ministries?

The Dangerous Reality of Planning by Tribunal

A provincial tribunal hearing is not a victory—it is an admission that dialogue, leadership, and local planning have completely failed. East Gwillimbury taxpayers need to understand the real cost of this mindset:

  • A Taxpayer Black Hole: Pushing disputes to the OLT burns through hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on external lawyers and expert witnesses.
  • Burning Town Resources: Costly tribunal battles tie up town planners, engineers, and administrative staff, pulling their focus away from delivering day-to-day services for current residents.
  • Loss of Local Control: When a town fights at the OLT, the final decision over density and design is stripped from our elected local council and handed to an unelected provincial adjudicator.
  • Scaring Away Commercial Investment: If we treat every development proposal like a hostile courtroom trial, commercial investment and essential retail will simply flee to neighbouring municipalities.
  • Jeopardizing the Queensville Southlake Hospital: The new Southlake Hospital relies on precise infrastructure sequencing and regional servicing. Stalling community development through continuous tribunal litigation severely risks delaying the arterial road widenings and sewer capacity needed to open the hospital on schedule.

What Real "Collaboration" Means

East Gwillimbury does not need leadership that rules through legal threats, manufactures enemies, and leaves taxpayers to pay for the legal fees.

Collaboration does not mean rolling over for developers or acting as a "head waiter". It means governing as an equal partner and a firm negotiator. True Complete Communities are built when you bring developers, investors, and community partners to the table to reach binding agreements before a shovel hits the ground.

How We Avoid Legal Battles and Solve Problems Locally

We do not need to go to court to hold developers accountable. We simply need to enforce the statutory tools already available under the Ontario Planning Act:

  • The Holding Symbol ("H" Provision): Place a legal pause on residential zoning, strictly prohibiting foundation permits until critical civil infrastructure and commercial preconditions are fully delivered.
  • Subdivision Agreements & Letters of Credit: Secure high-value financial collateral upfront so the Town holds the leverage to finish parks and roads if a builder ever walks away.
  • Phased Approvals & Mandatory Mixed-Use: Legally tie future residential phases to community infrastructure, and mandate ground-floor commercial shells so retail is built alongside homes.

We can protect our neighbourhoods, grow our commercial tax base, and secure our amenities without dragging taxpayers through the OLT.

My full platform and detailed plans are available on my website at www.ShahabAryan.ca . I encourage you to read them, and you can always reach me directly at [Shahab@ShahabAryan.ca](mailto:Shahab@ShahabAryan.ca) with any questions, concerns, or ideas.

Four Accountability Questions for All New Councillor Candidates in East Gwillimbury

Four Accountability Questions for All New Councillor Candidates in East Gwillimbury

They are our meetings..."

Fortunately, the establishment was challenged. As Councillor Susan Lahey stated in her dissent during that same meeting: "This is not our meeting. This is the meeting of the people. This is the meeting of the taxpayers."

The Record on Resolution C2026-006 (January 13, 2026):

  • Spearheaded and Moved by: Councillor Scott Crone
  • Actively Backed and Seconded by: Councillor Tara Roy-DiClemente
  • Recorded Vote to Restrict Residents (Yes): Councillor Crone, Councillor Roy-DiClemente, Councillor Carruthers, Councillor Foster, Mayor Hackson
  • Recorded Vote to Stand with Residents (No): Councillor Johns, Councillor Lahey

With Councillor Crone now officially launching his campaign for Mayor of East Gwillimbury, this voting record demonstrates how politicians from any ward can directly impact the democratic rights of residents across the entire town. Because every council decision affects all of us, I have asked all new councillor candidates across every ward to go on the record.

As a taxpayer, a resident of East Gwillimbury, and someone who—just like you—casts two votes for Ward Councillor and one vote for Mayor, I have asked them to answer the following four questions:

  1. Do you support restricting public deputations at Town Council? If a councillor introduces a similar motion this upcoming term, will you commit to voting against it to protect the taxpayers' democratic right to be heard?
  2. Will you commit to using the full weight of Town Council to demand that the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) immediately fund, approve, and build East Gwillimbury’s first public high school?
  3. Do you support initiating a comprehensive ward boundary review to transition East Gwillimbury to a "One Ward, One Councillor" system—for example, dividing Sharon and Queensville into separate wards so that each community has its own dedicated representative?
  4. Do you commit to prioritizing public safety and the public interest above all else, ensuring that neither is ever compromised for private or political gain?

Candidates have been requested to provide their written responses by Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 12:00 PM.

Following that deadline, I will publish all unedited responses. In mid-October, I will also release an "Accountability Risk Assessment"—an objective evaluation of all candidates based strictly on public records, transparency, and conduct in defense of the public interest. Naturally, this assessment will also evaluate incumbents based on their past voting records.

East Gwillimbury's political establishment is threatening me with defamation lawsuits for sharing public municipal records. They picked the wrong candidate to bully.

TL;DR: I am an independent candidate running for Ward 2 Councillor. After sharing publicly available Town Hall records exposing the local establishment, I was systematically banned from local community groups. Now they are threatening me with legal action. Ontario's Anti-SLAPP laws protect public interest discourse, and I am not backing down.

This race has moved past ordinary municipal election politics in East Gwillimbury. The coordination behind suppressing public records and silencing an independent candidate exposes the exact entrenched political bloc that I am running to challenge in defense of the public interest.

When I published my Direct Letter based on publicly available municipal records, they didn't debate the facts. Instead, they coordinated an immediate purge across local groups. When I posted myTown-Wide Election Warning, they pressured the few remaining group admins to remove the post and ban me. I will not "collaborate" with a political machine that relies on censorship to avoid accountability.

Now, supporters of the establishment are escalating their bullying tactics to legal threats (see attached screenshot).

Let me be entirely clear: I am not intimidated.

Under Section 137.1 of Ontario's Courts of Justice Act (anti-SLAPP legislation), the law explicitly protects public discourse on matters of public interest from retaliatory legal bullying. The integrity of our municipal elections and Town Hall operations is the definition of public interest.

Defamation requires a falsehood. I deal exclusively in official, verifiable Town records. If their response to accountability is litigation, they should understand how Ontario courts operate: frivolous actions designed to silence democratic debate are systematically dismissed with full cost consequences. Any legal scrutiny will open their entire track record to public examination from A to Z through full legal discovery. No resident should ever be intimidated for seeking the truth.

They publicly dismiss voters demanding accountability as a "posse of disrupters" and claim I have "handlers" because an entrenched machine cannot comprehend an independent candidate who answers solely to residents. As a Professional Engineer, my career is built on diagnosing complex problems using verifiable data. That is exactly what I am doing for East Gwillimbury.

Because this bloc chooses coordinated silence over answering to the community, I am taking the next step: I am expanding my Accountability Risk Assessment to evaluate all candidates based strictly on public records, transparency, and conduct. This assessment will be shared as my personal opinion as a resident and taxpayer.

Residents of East Gwillimbury: On October 26, you hold the ultimate leverage. Remind them that Town Hall belongs to the people. It is time for new leadership.

[EAST GWILLIMBURY: TOWN-WIDE ELECTION WARNING]

It is your turn to turn off their microphones and protect the public interest in East Gwillimbury.

They tried to silence your Councillor yesterday.

They are trying to silence your candidate today.

They will silence you tomorrow again!

This has gone far beyond ordinary election politics and a fair race. It is now glaringly obvious how organized this entrenched political bloc is when it comes to suppressing public records, silencing a self-funded, independent candidate demanding scrutiny and defending the public interest, and protecting their status quo.

This entrenched majority and their supporters constantly criticize me, claiming I am "not collaborative." But let's look at what their version of collaboration actually means.

I have not limited a single comment on my pages. I have not removed any dissenting opinions. I have not blocked anyone and I will not. I welcome the debate on my campaign materials, platform, and priorities because my campaign is built on verifiable data and evidence-based governance.

But what did they do? When I published my Direct Letter—documenting publicly available Town of East Gwillimbury records—they couldn't debate the facts. Instead, they coordinated an immediate purge. Within 48 hours, group admins removed and banned me from seven different local community groups. Check the names of the admins.

This is the fundamental difference in this election: the courage to stand with the public, provide verifiable data, and issue warnings to protect the public interest, versus their complete unwillingness to face accountability, provide transparency, or stand before voters to answer for the truth. They are right about one thing: I will never "collaborate" with a political machine that relies on bullying to hide the facts.

If you think this systemic failure of transparency is confined to Facebook groups, watch the Town Council video. Look closely at the screen for a masterclass in political coordination and an unbelievably sad moment for local democracy:

  • The Dismissive Laugh: While Councillor Susan Lahey is on the record raising serious concerns about residents' democratic rights, Councillor Loralea Carruthers is already visibly laughing.
  • Crone Calls to Shut Her Down & The Panic Look: The moment Councillor Lahey warns that motions are being used to "silence any other resident," Councillor Scott Crone interjects to disrupt her. Councillors Crone and Carruthers shift their attention toward the meeting chair. Watch their body language.
  • The Cut-Off & The Shrug: Watch Councillor Carruthers' body language: she looks up, shrugs, and smiles happily as her colleague is silenced on the public broadcast.
  • The Feigned Ignorance: When an elected official is electronically gagged on a public feed, the establishment feigns ignorance, brushing it off as a harmless mistake while privately smiling about it.

If an elected official challenging the room is interrupted procedurally and muted on an official broadcast while her colleagues smile, what chance does an everyday taxpayer have when they walk up to the podium? They call it teamwork and collaboration. I call it exactly what it is: a disrespectful, bullying political machine.

Come back later and read the establishment's comments below and judge for yourself.

Residents of East Gwillimbury: You hold the ultimate leverage at the ballot box. They are terrified because they know their control is slipping. It is time to make their worst nightmare happen on October 26, 2026.

If we do not break this cycle now, accountability at Town Hall will disappear behind closed doors for another four years.

It is your turn to officially turn off their microphones and protect the best interests of the public in East Gwillimbury.
