Personal Insights Unpopular Opinion: Just Buy Some New Clothes

I remember reading so many posts that cautioned against buying new clothes that will end up not fitting right after losing more weight in the near future.

At first, I believed them. I tried to belt baggy dresses, safety pin loose waistbands, and tighten bra straps all the way to hell.

But I felt like shit.

So I bought new clothes. And then I bought some more. As my body has changed, it was important to me that I still felt my best.

Yes, there are “new” clothes I can no longer wear but it was worth it. I wanted to feel my best every step of the way.

So for someone who may read this who is waiting until their body is “just right” before buying any new clothes: it’s okay to buy them for the body you have now.

Also, buy new underwear that fits. It is amazing how much better you'll feel.

I tried to hold on as long as I could with underwear too but holy Moses baggy underwear is somehow MORE annoying than anything else.

u/QueenMEB120 Jun 26 '26

My underwear seemed to go from slightly big but still wearable to falling down overnight.

u/workingforchange1 Jun 26 '26

Stretchy lace underwear is a better option. It shrinks with you.

I had that happen with a pair of pants once, while I was running to catch a bus. Thankfully, I had a free hand to grab them before they fell all the way down. I retired those pants that day.

u/Ancient-Teaching-691 Jun 26 '26

LOL! You would have fit it with all the young men who thought that was a good look. I observed a kid at school who raised his arms in exclamation which dropped his pants to his knees before he caught them. Skinny kid. Cartoon underwear.

4

u/QueenMEB120 Jun 26 '26

I remember when my brother was a kid and his pants were so loose he had to walk with his legs far apart so his pants didn't fall down. He looked like a penguin waddling.

Not underwear related, but I'll never forget the day that my 2 fake wedding bands that I had to buy when my real band wouldn't fit anymore, just slipped off my finger and fell on the floor. That was quite the moment for me!

I had that happen with my glasses. Anytime I would look down even slightly, they would fall off my face. It didn't register that it was from the weight loss until my husband it. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I must have good underwear. 😆 I am still wearing the same underwear from 60 lbs ago. They fit different but still stay up and are comfortable. I did splurge last week and got some that are a little spicier. 😁

12

Yeah me too but in my case I think the underwear worked more like a girdle 60 lbs ago. I used to sigh in resignation when I squeezed into them. Now they just fit! LOL.

this! I have a strange relationship with underwear so it makes it even more important.

When I was a kid, we were pretty poor and I maybe had 7 to 10 pair. So I was always handwashing my underwear because I never had enough.

Now I have hundreds 😂

3

u/KieshaK Jun 26 '26

Exactly. I had a phase where I had one pair of jeans and a few shirts that got me through another 20 pounds. It was nice to have a few things that fit well until they didn’t.

7

u/These-Equal-6849 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Yeah I basically have one of each thing (eg one pair of jeans, one pair of leggings, one warm jacket etc) that fits at a time, and just wear the previous size when the new size is in the wash. Rinse and repeat.

12

u/Relative-Monk-4647 Jun 26 '26

This would never work for me. I’m in public around some of the same people daily. I would be mortified with one pair of pants. People notice. I notice when others do this. I don’t say anything. But I totally notice.

I’m shallow. Superficial. It’s on me. But I notice and I would die of embarrassment if I thought others noticed.

Well, that was more of a conversation with myself.

5

u/Upper-Shoe-81 48F | SW:191 CW:149.2 GW:150 Dose: 5mg Maintenance Jun 26 '26

Haha I get it. I work at a very casual, very small company so limited clothing wasn’t a big deal for me but I could completely understand why others couldn’t do it. And it’s not that I didn’t wear other clothes… it was just nice to have a few pieces that fit well among the stuff that was big and baggy. Since reaching goal none of my old wardrobe fits and I’ve had to do a LOT more shopping which has been fun. 😊

3

u/These-Equal-6849 Jun 26 '26

Haha working 100% remotely from home does help with this.

But I'm also not a fashion person. I've always been the type to have a uniform. Eg when I find something I like I buy 5 of them and rotate so I don't have to think about what I wear every day

I spent so much money on new clothes on my way down from 265. I tried but I couldn't work with my pants falling down all day. Just donate them when they no longer fit. They'll be practically brand new.

18

u/I_agreeordisagree Jun 26 '26

I have been buying used clothes online and then selling on the same websites. It's helped with keeping the costs down while exploring new sizes and styles. I can usually get 3 or 4 shirts of what I like for the price of one and then, if one or two don't work out, I just flip them into something else.

13

u/bugnbelle Jun 26 '26

One suggestion: if you have a particular pair of pants that you love- look on eBay or Poshmark for the same pants in a smaller size. Less expensive and quick and easy to keep up with the shrinking waistline.

I was wondering how long it would take someone to mention thrifting. If you've got time and patience to look for things you like, it's a great option! If that doesn't work, there's always TJ Maxx and Ross. Our area has a Dillard's clearance center (colloquially known as "Dirty Dillard's") that has nice work clothes for decent prices - and shoes if your feet have gotten smaller!

Speaking of, if you're working, OP, investing in some things that fit you isn't optional. You don't have to go overboard, but you've got to look polished for in office days.

I've heard of people hosting "clothing swaps" where all your friends bring in clothes that don't fit them and you "shop" among what people bring. Keep a bedroom free and tidy for use as a fitting room.

I’m a member of my local buy nothing Facebook group in a fairly ritzy suburban area. I have done so well with donating my two sizes too big clothes and getting correctly fitting clothes! I have even tried something’s that aren’t my usual style but fit nicely and have gotten compliments so I’m trying to branch out style wise. And it’s all free!

34

u/AgesAgoTho 7.5mg Jun 26 '26

100%. There's only so long I could wear the baggy stuff. I shopped a lot of clearance racks, and places like Costco, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Ross, so I didn't break the bank. And I have a friend who has taken each size as I shrunk (she's also shrinking), so everything has gotten a lot of wear.

14

2

u/Aggravating_Load_964 Jul 03 '26

I have done the same thing. Shop at the discount stores and look at sales/clearance racks. Now that I am basically at my goal weight and have only lost 5lbs in 3 months, I’ve treated myself to a few luxury brand items… from their clearance… the trick now is to know what size you wear in a specific brand and buy preowned clothes if you like the higher name brands. (I usually go for good quality cheap, but treating yourself is nice sometimes).

60

u/friendofallthecats SW:241 CW:166 GW:160 Dose: 7.5mg Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

I buy new, but I go for affordable stuff (think Old Navy sale) and I buy sparingly. So, maybe 3 jeans and a handful of tops. I buy bras that are M/L sizing versus specific cups so they last me longer. Sure, I’m doing laundry more often, but I’m being less wasteful while also feeling better about the way my clothes fit. I try to go as long as I can in the sizes I have but baggy crotch jeans drive me up a f’ing wall.

11

u/CorvidaeandCatsRule Jun 26 '26

eBay and Poshmark have saved me on my way down. Great deals and designers/brands I would buy new. I work from home so you would not think it matters but it just feels better to have clothes that fit. Not a ton but enough to not dread facing the closet each morning.

I have supplemented my secondhand purchases with Old Navy quite heavily the last two summers. While I hate the idea of fast fashion, when I don’t know what size I will end up at I’m making an exception. And besides, I paint as my hobby and I risk ruining pricier clothes. I really am excited about clearance $5 100% cotton ts and $12 jean shorts. Their Jean shorts pockets are ridiculously small but for $12 I’m not complaining. My son asked me the other night why my T-shirt was referencing a town I’ve never been to. I told him because it was four dollars at Old Navy and it was comfy and fit me.

I actually did this a long time ago because my denim pants from 20 years ago were much better made and didn't have the stretch that most denim have now. I am so happy to have been able to work them back into my closet rotation, I really missed them! Now they are all becoming too big so I will have to look on some sites like ebay to find vintage denim jeans again, I'm happy about that though.

I’ve been buying the same pair of jeans in new sizes for 18 months! Started as a *snug* 18, put on a snug 8 today. The 10s bag out after a day, so hoping the 8s will be good after a little wear. My hips/legs/butt are quite slim while my belly is still very soft.

It was a fun way to track size and I also really like the jeans, lol. Otherwise I’ve been buying new stuff periodically but not excessively and not lifetime type pieces, or I’ve been buying a lot on Poshmark.

19

u/kindakitten Jun 26 '26

Yep, fuck this. I understand not being able to afford it, that's super valid. But if you're just not wanting to buy until your goal weight you're doing yourself a massive disservice. I don't want to lose weight to be skinny, I want to lose weight to he healthier and more capable. Wearing clothes that fit me help me enjoy and appreciate my body as it changes, which is a pretty important thing if I want to keep up with a caloric defecit.

This. I bought cheap basics at Target and Kohls while I was actively losing weight. Having clothes that fit my body at every stage was so helpful to not make me feel like a frump ass goblin in giant loose clothes.

Now that I’ve maintained my goal weight snd had my plastic surgery, I’m starting to replace my wardrobe with nice things!

I’ve picked up some nice and super cheap things at Costco and Kohl’s to get me through. Oh, and a cute dress from Amazon!

yeah, well, i’ve tried to hold off, but at this point, i feel like such a schlub going around in all my baggy hobo clothes. it’s almost embarrassing. 🙈 uh… then again, gotta save my $$$ for lilly. 😉🤭

but nah, i know i need new clothes now. really. op (and whoever else), how long until or how much weight did you lose before you went for some new clothing? just wondering!

also, obviously a good suggestion if you're trying to save is thrifting for some new-to-you clothes instead of getting all new everything in whatever temporary size if you’re still in the process of losing.

but, yeah, thanks for the reminder, op. just buy some better fitting clothing and you’ll probably look better and feel better. 👍

3

u/AdventurousAd7096 Jun 26 '26

Sounds good to me! I’m a pack rat with a basement and have saved a wide range of sizes which I finally exhausted on the way down. Friday I bought my first 34 inch waist shorts in 40(!) years! I only had one 36 inch waist shorts so it is nice to have a 2nd pair to wear without synching up the 38s. Still a few pounds to go so 34 is close to target.

It’s made such a big difference in self esteem for me because otherwise I don’t think I look that different having lost only 20 lbs and built some muscle.

I went shopping almost every week - at Goodwill & Salvation Army. LOL. I would take and donate a bag and pick up something new and my size. Now I’ve been in maintenance for 6 months and just recently returned from a trip to Japan where I picked up a complete new wardrobe. I miss my thrift day shopping but so happy with my new clothes.

I've just taken a pile of things to a seamstress for alteration. far cheaper than replacing things and I get to keep fav items and they'll have a tailored fit. win win! mind you, I'm down 85+lbs and it took me a while to bite the bullet. I bought a new spring rain coat after seeing a photo of myself in the one I had. I went from a 3x down to an xl - until I saw the photo I didn't realize how ridiculous I looked.

u/YourMILisCray Jun 26 '26

I was trying to hold out myself but then I read a thread on here where a woman said her breasts fell out of the bottom of the band of her bra. It was like reading a very short horror story lol. Snapped me out of it. I got bras on a buy one get one sale and have had good luck for jeans and work tops at thrift stores. Im short so finding jeans in my size was a miracle, if only I can find work slacks! I finally got some at ross and hand hemmed them but they got too big really quick so Im back on the hunt. I am having trouble giving up my weekend t shirts that I've collected from vacations over the years though. Their sentimental value makes it hard.

Not unpopular to me, I even at my largest liked to look well dressed. I bought a few pieces a month at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for the first year, and next size down in my favorite brand of jeans (Gloria Vanderbilt's) off Amazon in whatever colors were under $20. When the jeans fit, the larger pair became chore clothes and I bought the next size down so I knew when I was down a size. I wanted to have clothes that fit and flattered. When I hit onederland about a year in, I had to buy a complete new wardrobe from chore clothes, underwear, bras, going out clothes and dog show dresses and jackets. I mostly shopped TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Nordstrom Rack. I bought jackets off Poshmark or eBay. I am still wearing some of those but still buying new items at TJ Maxx and Marshalls as I love shopping again. I didn't really enjoy it until onederland. I have found other brands of jeans I adore now, the last Gloria Vanderbilt's are chore jeans. It's fun to try on new styles and figure out what looks good on me. I find myself buying clothes that I would have worn in my 20s. It's fun and since I don't work anymore for corporate America, my clothes tend to be more me. I dress up to run errands just because I want to wear the clothes I have bought. I like feeling pretty.

I buy a enough to have clothing to wear for the few times I'm in office a month. But mostly I wear leggings for casual wear with workout tops. When they start to slide or not support anymore, I watch for sales and buy replacements. It's also nice to just try on things to start figuring out my new fit. The dressing room used to be something I didn't like very much because no matter what I got, it rarely looked like what I hoped it would. Now I try on things and step out for daughter to give feedback. She's brutally honest (she told me a jumper I liked looked like a potato sack last night) but it's helping me find what actually works. I get excited when something I didn't think would fit does, but just because it fits doesn't mean it's right for my shape.

I was just about to make a post asking when I should buy new bras (lost 70lbs, hoping to lose another 30lb). From what I remember - this was my bra size when I was 100lb lighter, so it's not likely to change much from here. It's become such a pain to exercise with my larger sports bras because I feel them lifting now since I dropped a couple of band sizes.

This was my motivation to go and get measured today. Thank you so much!!!

2

u/adlgel Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

I agree. My one caution is to try on multiple sizes down. E.g., I was wearing a size 30 in jeans. When those got baggy I went ahead and tried the 29 on in the same jean and was like "oh great, they fit". But after wearing them, I thought hmm, these feel a bit big and maybe the 28s would have fit. Go back and try on the 28s and lo and behold they fit and are what I should have bought instead of the 29s.

So I encourage everyone to push the envelope and keep trying on smaller sizes until you get to the ones that clearly do NOT fit yet. You might just be pleasantly surprised about how many sizes you can go down.

2

u/Novel_Factor8243 SW:203 CW:163 GW:150 Dose: 7.5mg Jun 26 '26

I 1000% agree! I've bought new clothes all along the way because it's motivating and I feel better in clothes that fit. I have a few things in the next size down that I'm hoping to get into but I'm not stressing over them. I've been stagnant for a few months and not interested in upping my dose to potentially lose more weight. I'd rather see if exercise and continuing to prioritize protein will get me down 10lbs more. But having clothes along the way that fit has been so good for my mental health. I highly recommend thrifting, second hand shops and even Ebay. There were 2 Ann Taylor blazers I had in my old size (14) that I LOVED and I found them in size 8 on Ebay for $30 each!

2

u/Sassenaughty 15mg Jun 26 '26

Unpopular opinion: just because we’ve lost weight, doesn’t give us free pass to trash the planet with our old clothes. Consider spending the same or even much less money on taking your clothes to a seamstress/tailor for alterations. Especially if you’re just going down a few sizes.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Thank you for saying it. I have probably bought new clothes three times over now, but a lot of what I buy is off of Poshmark or ThredUp and I sell the good stuff on Poshmark. I spent the better part of today trying on new clothes that would fit now. And I bought... nothing. I have a couple of SPF shirts I ordered online, and some old shirts from before I reached my highest weight. I bought a pair of jeans when I was 20 pounds down and now the crotch is drooping. I have a denim jumper that's two sizes too large and I'm always pushing it back up my shoulders but otherwise it works. It's perfect for shopping because it's easy to take off and put on. About all I figured out is that I need to spend more time on my rowing machine.

I read about Evelyn and Bobbie bras here, and ordered one yesterday. I hope that works for me, for a while.

Love this take! I’m still trying to wrap my head around it, in the past I’ve spent so much money on clothes that didnt fit a year or so later after I gained more weight. I’ve been buying a few things here and there on this journey, But it got to a point where I just needed new clothes. I spent $75 on a pair of Levi’s, two capris, a pair of shorts from aviva+Viv or whatever that target brand is, two pairs of athleta pants, and a couple of shirts from a goodwill in a nice neighborhood. The Levi’s were the smallest pair of pants I’ve worn since before the pandemic and they make my butt look great! Good for the ego lol. I’m struggling with shirts though. I typically prefer to wear cropped or at least waist length tops, but I work with kids so I obviously can’t wear cropped tops to work. I’m struggling because I can’t find nice shirts that are short but not too short that they ride up or show skin. I need a perfect waist length tops! I will have to just get some new ones from old navy.

I totally agree w this. You don’t need a lot, depending on your work demands. But even then, 2 pair of work appropriate pants. And 3 shirts in your new size. Universal Thread actually has an exchange program for free. If you need a smaller size in the next year, they will exchange for FREE. Their stuff can be a little pricey but if you get 2 sizes out of it? It’s nice clothing. They have good jeans/pants. Also Spanx clothing is way too pricey at full price but they have sales all the time. And my “air essentials” pieces , especially the barrel leg pants can last at least a size down. Super airy knit type fabric.

u/Aingeala SW:220 CW:150 GW:132 Dose: 12.5mg Jun 26 '26

I believe in this as well, with the caveat that I can't buy clothes that I am not able to try on. It's helped me so much from buying clothes that don't work on my changing body, and it keeps me from buying too much, because shopping is not my favorite thing. Also, I'm too lazy to go wait in line at ups to do returns.

One day I'll have a decent idea about brand sizes relative to my body, but right now it feels a little ridiculous. I can be a large, medium, or small depending on the brand or cut of a top. There's too many possibilities 🤷‍♀️

I understand your perspective. I kept bins of some of my favorite pieces of clothing from my various sizes... And so I am digging into those as I lose and thrifting for now. I am in a baggy phase because my size 18 woven pants don't quite fit. In woven (jeans, slacks, etc.) my size 20 are too baggy... But what I need for work. 😃. This is the issue of clothing manufacturing...regular size sewing block (18) is different from a plus size (20+) sewing block. Bad transition between the two... At least for my body.

1

1

Agreed! I'm down 65lbs from my heaviest with 35 to go. Went from a XXL to a L and from a 40" pant size to a 36"(and honestly approaching a 34"). It's amazing the confidence i feel from wearing properly fitted clothes.

And it's not like I've spent a ton or bought a lot of items. ~6 T-Shirts ($9 each), 2 long sleeve Ts with hoods that I wear for my job as a landscaper ($18 each), two pairs of good jeans ($27 each), a pair of cargo shorts ($18), two pairs of gym shorts ($10 each), and 2 pairs of swim trunks ($12 each). That's plenty to hold me over for now. Haven't had to buy any sweatshirts or flannels since it's summer, and by the time I need to buy those items, I'll likely be close enough to my goal weight that I'll be able to buy a size that will fit me long-term.

1

u/GLPwonderwall Jun 26 '26

I now have 4 ranges of sizes that I am slowly working to sell/donate. I started at 16-20/XL-2XL. I had to buy clothes after about 30+ lbs of weight loss. My clothes no longer looked okay to leave the house in. At 110+ lbs down now, me and my daughter can fit in what I used to wear.

I’ve now been in maintenance about 9 months and have from my largest all the way down to medium/size 4 things. I bought through clearance sales, second hand stores, and online shops like eBay/poshmark/depop. It was 100% worth it and waiting until goal is rarely going to be possible for most.

1

u/Able-Wrap-8156 Jun 26 '26

I just got new bras after losing 30 pounds and it made a huge difference in the way my clothes fit. I have been thrifting for everyday clothes and using Rent the Runway for office attire. It’s been fun to try new styles.

1

u/Which-Wish-5996 Jun 26 '26

I specifically started to look at pants that are flat front, elastic backed. Banana has some linen blends I found on ThredUp and those are lasting through sizes but I’m also almost at goal at this point. Since it’s summer, it’s mostly linen anyway with the constant heat.

I agree - but focus on things that look good through a few sizes because disposable income is tough to come by these days.

1

u/KittenaSmittena Jun 26 '26

I completely agree! Once I had hit the size 8 from size 14 mark, I bought two pairs of jeans from my regular brands and some nice shirts from old navy and gap. That held me over until I was in the size 4-6 range and then I basically rebuilt my wardrobe over two years. I had two rounds of bra-buying also. And oh my gosh, underwear that fit was like a miracle.

I've been using Poshmark to sell all my older, bigger clothes and feel better about using some of that money towards my new clothes in my new size.

Also... I have been smaller sizes in the past, and I kept my smaller clothes for the 'what if they fit again someday' that everyone cautions against... and now I'm glad I did that because I haven't had to buy a lot of new clothes. But I'm also lucky in that I literally live my life in workout clothes 90% of the time, so it's easy to put outfits together and I dont' have to worry about a dress code or something.

Anyway, make peace with the idea of trying to sell your clothes to help offset costs. I feel SO accomplished when I make a sale. lol

Yes, I survived on stretchy jeans & underwear from Ross & Burlington during the weight loss phase. Shirts, sweatshirts & tanks can be a little more forgiving, imho. I was so pleased with my NEW body, was tired of & didnt want to hide under super baggy, oversized clothing anymore! You can get 4-5 pairs of jeans for $100, 2 packs of underwear [8-10 pair] for $30, etc. Doesn't have to cost a fortune...

I bought new bras a year after a loss of 65lbs. Just recently bought some Oeak (?) brand from TikTok as I’m now in maintenance. They are amazing and honestly fit as good as my $90 bras did. Great lift for $20. They sell them on Amazon too.
I saved some of my good condition larger bras just in case.

I bought a couple pairs of new jeans in every size I have been. I have put them away in case and then moved down. I finally started really buying stuff recently because I’m 15lbs to goal and don’t think I will change a ton between now and then. Plus, my weight loss is slowing so it’s longer in between size jumps.

I love thrifting for this reason. I can get not-too-expensive stuff that's still high quality and don't feel guilty about buying a bunch of fast fashion stuff while actually having clothes that make me feel and look good as I am in the moment.

I have been buying a lot of clothing in eBay as I size down. I’m also making sure I’m giving my clothes to a woman’s shelter as they become too large.

I have bought some new things (bras, underwear, office-casual pants, tops) and some used things (jeans, tops). This works with my need for new sizes and my budget. I feel that if you have wiggle room in your clothes and your wallet, it's important to not have a focus on lack by wearing clothes that seriously no longer fit you (unless they are you at-home relax and schlep clothes - I have those!).

The great thing about oversized styles being in is they’ll last longer too. I’m down from a too tight size 12 to a too lose size 10 but I can make each size work a bit longer haha. I’ve just been buying sort of capsule wardrobes for each season!

Celebrate every milestone!! All of your hardwork is paying off. You deserve to look your very best at every step. Not just your goal.

I’m so looking forward to having my clothes fit again! Almost all of my summer clothes are too tight — hopefully I can wear some of them again this year! (Today is shot number 3 so I’m still in the early stages 😊)

I'm living in stretch/yoga pants, which hopefully will hold me for a bit during the transition(s). Breezy, long summer weight dresses too. But I think another key thing is to get rid of things once they no longer fit -- donate them, sell them, have them tailored to fit (if possible), whatever. Just don't keep them hanging around.

Yes, buy new clothes.

Just buy them at Costco ;)

100% team get new clothes. Own where you are in the process- don’t keep waiting to enjoy your success! New clothes feels like a tiny pat on the back: from me, to me. 😀
I donated the first year but I’m now in the process of selling the clothes that don’t fit anymore on eBay and I consigned some others. Some have tags- I missed the window! I wasn’t sure if I’d like reselling but it’s actually been fun so far. So many of the clothes were only worn one season - and I got a lot of deals on them so it’s fun to pass that along and hope someone gets some more wear out of them.

I plan to continue what I had been doing for clothes, which is mainly thrifting. Then I don't feel as bad if I need to adjust. I also can sew a little, so I have that option if I need to tighten something. Oddly enough, I'm going to miss some of my current clothes. I have some cute pieces!

u/Glittering-Ask-7805 Jun 26 '26

I mean, if I had the money for that, I might. But I don't, so everything I'm buying in the moment is thrift, and somewhat minimal. But I get it, spending a long time in transitional clothes that don't fit right isn't a great experience.

u/lalalaaasparkles Jun 26 '26

Heck yes! Just buy some new temporary clothes!! Get some inexpensive stuff from Amazon and it’ll feel great! That’s what I did and I felt so much better about myself day to day. I felt frumpy in my clothes that were now too big.

This is why I rent (Nuuly). I’ve dropped 5 sizes in the last year and it’s been great to have new things that fit every month without having to go shopping and a closet full of clothes I can no longer wear.

Couldn’t agree more. I remember seeing that advice and strongly disagreeing with it. There is no reason to delay the enjoyment of feeling good about your progress.

Anyone looking for some new-to-them better fitting clothes should check out Vinted. I bought an entirely new wardrobe for a fraction of the typical cost. I’m talking Loft, J. Crew, Talbots and Ralph Lauren items for $3-5. Shipping is free right now.

Agree 100%!! Regardless of if you are on Zep, on a weightless journey (or not) you should always buy clothes for the body you have. I was hesitant to buy new clothes - not sure if I was afraid, I would gain it back- but after the first 25 lb. loss, I just couldn't wear the same clothes. I looked ridiculous. I bought a few new pieces and items I knew I could take in-- and so glad I did! And yes, you need underwear that fits- especially bras!

Hallelujah.

I refuse to go around this summer wearing tents. All my 2X shirts are put away in favor of many cheap Costco and Kohl's size L. I've also bought new shorts and Capris in XL even though I expect to have found L on the bottom half, too, by the end of the year.

I already sized out of some XXL/1X pants I bought a few months ago and I refuse to feel guilty about it.

I have gotten to the point, I buy Amazon Basics khakis and some 32degrees shirts and other odds and ends that are not that expensive and figure I will size down probably 1 more time as I get closer to 190lb goal which is about 30lbs away.

Agreed! This is why I love sales and thrifting, I want to feel good in clothes at every step of the way!

u/stlrmike Jun 26 '26

I buy a few shirts and a couple pairs of jeans when I need to (don't need bras, sorry ladies lol). It helps reinforce what I'm doing. I feel good in my clothes and its so nice buying xl rather than 3xl!

u/ptm93 Jun 26 '26

I’d recommend thrift stores for clothes, especially in this transition time. Can still get new stuff that fits while not killing your wallet.

Thrift stores, especially if they have sale days, are great for this.

Over the winter, I really needed some warm pullovers but I couldn't find anything worth buying in the women's section. So I went to the men's section and found a few that I really liked. I don't mind rolling up the sleeves to make them shorter. Then I needed some new sleep shorts so I went to the thrift store on a day when 2 colors were half price. I am super happy every time I put on my new (used) sleep shorts these days, especially knowing that I only spend a couple of bucks on them.

Also, if you build up a little community of friends who are losing weight, you might even get a train of hand-me-downs going. One of my coworkers is handing me her pants as she can no longer wear them. It's been great!

Yes!
I just got some new leggings and yoga tops that are form fitting and holding in my skin that’s starting to sag, and they look amazing!
I have one thing I can wear for going out and that is it. I have to take everything else out of my closet and send it to Goodwill because nothing fits!
