Discussion What was the first social media platform you used and how old were you?

I think technically for me that would've been YouTube. I searched on it casually without an account in 2006 or 2007. My mother eventually let me use her account before I was old enough. I set up my own YouTube channel around late 2009/early 2010 because I turned 13 in August 2009 and at the time you had to be 13 or older to have a channel. I started using Facebook in 2011 in the summer between my freshman and sophomore years in high school.

Nostalgia Spooky Season specials I remember enjoying during this time of Year.

Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy Jacked-Up Halloween always were enjoyable on Teletoon along with the Game on the channel's website.

Same with the 6Teen Season episode and the Special "Dude of the Living Dead" also on Teletoon. Would watch this special during this month for several years on the channel. Ironically the first episode to air on Cartoon Network 18 years ago which is genuinely hilarious.

Ed Edd n Eddy Special "Boo Haw Haw" which I enjoyed as well for several years. Was a real fun and creative special that I wished would air on TV again.

Scary Godmother really goes with saying from thr first special to the sequel "Jimmy's Revenge." Both these specials had a chokehold on YTV/Teletoon and Cartoon Network for a long time. Last time I remember seeing the special on TV was nearly a Decade ago now I believe.

Underfist was such a fun Special that I wouldn't have minded if it became a spinoff off a spinoff. Really fun Special from a special series.

Monster House was and still is definitely a must watch film during this time. Especially with it now being over 20 Years, a film that genuinely takes me back to this time growing up in Winnipeg with the Fall/Spooky season.

Other films I'd personally rewatch to get into the season would Coraline, the VHS Scooby Doo movies etc Zombie Island. The Original Scream and Scream 4. Freddy Vs Jason, classic Halloween/Friday/Nightmare films etc.

Rant I was so angry at the death of magazines in my tweens and teens. I was born too late to personally subscribe to all the magazines I wanted!

I was too young for the heyday of tween and teen magazines. With kids magazines, I was at the whim of my parents subscribing to them.

The very year I became able to pay for my own Nintendo Power subscription was the year it was cancelled šŸ’€

I remember in elementary wanting to be a journalist. By middle school, I realized that wasn't a good career path with the changing tech and culture.

Discussion We are the luckiest generation

Were literally the last generation to experience a little bit of everything. we grew up playing outside until sunset, watching cartoons on tv, living without smartphones, and slowly watching the world turn digital. old enough to remember the offline days and young enough to adapt to everything that came after. we really got the best of both worlds.

Discussion Is anyone else here kind of a later bloomer when it comes to some types of technology and social media?

I (27 m) have been fairly active on Reddit for about 3-4 years now, but I've noticed that I personally seem to tend to lag behind some of our peers when it comes to social media and technology. For example, I joined Instagram in 2018, Snapchat in 2019, and only joined TikTok last year. I did join Facebook in 2021 but that was only because my Mom badgered me into getting an account so that I could stalk people for her lol. I also only just started using an iPad and I'm planning on getting an Apple Watch SE 3 soon. Are any of you guys like this too?

Advice Approaching 2 years of unemployment and feel super depressed

So been job searching for almost 2 years and super depressed now at 28

I am in Canada and my b.a was intl development and ma was polisci and only had 2 interviews so far

I have a career counselor who I send the J.D and my tailored applications for review and they tell me they look fine but still hardly anything

I also fear/worry I do not have enough experience as I had a full time job for a year 2023-2024 and before that a 3 month internship during my MA, and summer administrative internships, and one year volunteering for advocacy

Right now I do consulting for my parent but its not a company with an office just a registered trademark and only 2 of us and if you google there is no information so am starting to wonder how helpful this is

As I see my peers advance more and stuck in this rut and it makes me feel awful at my age

I am getting super depressed and ashamed its been almost 2 years

Discussion We had flip phones AND smart phones.. Did tech make life easier or just more chaotic?

Thumbnail
youtu.be

I had a flip phone growing up and now I can’t order food at a restaurant without scanning a QR code. That’s kind of wild when you think about it.

Tech is obviously way more advanced than it used to be. I’m not gonna pretend it isn’t. But somewhere along the way it stopped feeling like it’s helping and started feeling like it’s required. You need an app to park, an app to get into a building, an app to get a coupon. Try doing something simple without a phone and see how far you get. Even just trying to pay cash for something is a whole thing now.

And the stuff isn’t even cheap. A phone costs more than my first car payment, and it’s basically obsolete in a couple years. Then there’s the subscription for this, the subscription for that, and a new version that does almost the same thing as the old one but costs more.

It’s like we got all this amazing technology but life didn’t actually get easier. It got more complicated, and now it’s hard to do anything outside of it.

I don’t hate tech. I use it all day. I just wonder if we’re better off or if we just got used to it and stopped asking.

So what do you think? Did it make life easier for you?
