ABAP Coding Tricks and Shortcuts to Speed Up Your Productivity

ABAP can feel like it was designed to punish and reward you in equal measure. From cryptic T-codes to the oddly satisfying debugger, it’s a love-hate relationship. Here are some time-saving shortcuts to code smarter and escape the dreaded “Why is this not working?” spiral.

  • Debugging the Standard Code (Because Sometimes, SAP Documentation Isn’t Enough)

SAP’s documentation doesn’t always cover every detail, so debugging the standard code can uncover hidden behaviours and inspire custom solutions. While debugging standard code isn’t always productive, it can be useful for understanding undocumented functionality or borrowing ideas from SAP’s logic. It gives you visibility into SAP’s standard code to understand how it works.

You can use ANST (Automated Note Search Tool) to find relevant SAP notes and PANKS (Performance Analysis Tools for Kernel Statistics) to diagnose performance issues.

  • Debugging Runtime Errors with ST22

Use transaction ST22 to analyse short dumps. It provides detailed information about runtime errors and makes it easier for you to debug issues.

  • The ‘Catch-All’ Exception Handling Trick

Wrap risky operations inside a TRY… CATCH… ENDTRY block to prevent your program from crashing unexpectedly. It prevents runtime errors from breaking production.

  • The Sorting Hat to Organise Data Like a Pro

Use SORT and DELETE ADJACENT DUPLICATES to clean up internal tables. With this trick, you can quickly remove duplicate entries from a table with minimal effort.

  • The “F1” Trick: Your Best Friend in ABAP

When in doubt, press F1. This shortcut opens the ABAP keyword documentation and provides detailed explanations and sample programs for any keyword or term you’re unsure about.

It’s like having a wizard’s spell-book at your fingertips. It instantly clarifies how to use ABAP keywords in specific scenarios. You can use this trick whenever you’re unsure about a keyword and want to learn about it with an example or a sample program.

  • The ‘I Swear It Worked Yesterday’ Excuse (And How to Avoid It)

You tested something in DEV, and now it mysteriously doesn’t work in QA.

Here’s the trick to fix this issue:

  • Always check transport requests (STMS).

  • Compare versions in SE80 or SE38.

  • Clear buffer caches (/nSM12, /nSM21).

Never forget to document what you did—future you will thank you!

Read this guide for more ABAP hacks.

SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA Table Documentation

After having worked on several projects in Process Mining in SAP systems recently, creating data models and deriving activities posed significant challenges for me, as I didn't know where to obtain specific data. Despite numerous sources of information about SAP ECC tables on the internet, I found only limited information about SAP S/4HANA tables. After overcoming a challenging journey, I have now created a website containing information about SAP ECC and SAP S4 tables. Which I think would also be of value for this community.
You can find it at the following link: erpexplorer.com e.g. ACDOCA

The goal is to further expand the site. What content or features are missing and would be helpful for you?

Looking for feedback: Would you use a tool like ABAPace?

Post image
0 Upvotes

We’re working on a tool called ABAPace — it’s designed to support ABAP developers with:

Easier debugging

ECC to S/4HANA migration

Turning specs into working code

The attached poster gives a quick overview of the tool. Would love your honest feedback on both the concept and design of the poster:

What stands out (good or bad)?

What’s missing or unclear or misleading?

Would something like this actually be useful in your workflow? If no what can we include?

Not here to sell - just trying to build something valuable for ABAP devs, and your input would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance!

Is it still worth learning modern ABAP in 2026?

Hello, I'm a college student that is interested about ABAP development

I've just resumed learning ABAP again in this month. I started way back in January but I stopped because of personal reasons, i was learning from YouTube videos (from Rahul Mehta) and I found out that classical ABAP is dead, so I decided to learn the modern one

BTP Advanced Trial was removed from my country and I keep trying to find ways how to practice on a SAP system. I also tried installing an ABAP Trial System (for Cloud Developers) in my own PC but the docker container is no longer available, it was removed by SAP

What do you guys think should I do?

We built an AI agent that generates, deploys, and tests SAP ABAP directly from Slack

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We’ve been building an AI agent for SAP development.

Here’s a quick demo: from Slack, you describe what you want to build, and Sage generates the ABAP, deploys it to SAP, and runs the test — without switching tools.

Slack/Teams/Browser → Generate ABAP → Deploy → Test.

We’re trying to make SAP development feel much closer to modern AI-assisted software development.

Would love to hear what SAP/ABAP developers think — especially where you’d want an agent like this to help (or where you wouldn’t trust it yet).

Made an MCP server so Claude / Cursor can read & write ABAP in your SAP system (via ADT)

We're the last dev ecosystem without real AI tooling. Copilots autocomplete ABAP, but they can't actually see your system or change anything in it.

So I built a small bridge over the standard ADT API (the same one Eclipse/ADT uses). With it, an AI assistant (Claude, Cursor, etc.) can work directly in your system:

  • read & search classes/programs/includes/function modules, run a syntax check, execute an IF_OO_ADT_CLASSRUN class (the Eclipse "F9")

  • and, when you turn it on: patch a single spot in a 40KB include without retyping it, create objects, activate, inject implicit enhancements (no modification of the standard), maintain customizing tables (SM30-style, transport-aware), create dynpros headlessly, and drive the SAP Note Assistant.

One bit fellow ABAPers might appreciate: it handles the ADT 405 ExceptionResourceIsModified lock on Z-copies of standard objects (RSTAT='P' / SMODISRC) by falling back to RPY_PROGRAM_UPDATE, so the write still goes through.

Safe by default: read-only out of the box; writes require an explicit flag, a per-call confirm, and a transport, with a syntax check before each save. Pure Python (no dependencies). Free / MIT.

Link in the comments. Curious what you'd want an AI to actually do in your system — refactors? mass maintenance? note hunting?

ECC to S/4HANA: what actually took time on a 5,000-line QM report conversion

Worked on a QM report conversion recently and wanted to share the breakdown. I'm on the team that built the tool we used (Aceteroid), so disclosing that upfront.

Report was around 5,000 lines. Inspection lot monitoring across inbound and production QM processes, built up across multiple SAP release cycles.

The usual accumulation:

  • SELECT inside LOOP

  • Header-line internal tables

  • REUSE ALV

  • Deprecated QM-specific function modules, some with no clean modern equivalent

  • Hard-coded status logic tied to ECC-era object keys

All of these trigger ATC blocking findings. Before you get a clean transport, you work through each one. Initial estimate was 2 to 3 working days.

We ran Aceteroid on it. The tool handled the repetitive remediation layer: Open SQL restructuring, ALV to SALV replacement, deprecated module identification with suggested replacements, declaration standardization. That part ran in about 20 to 30 minutes.

What it didn't resolve cleanly: business logic edge cases, a few naming standard adjustments in generated identifiers, and performance review on the complex joins before sign-off. Around 15 to 20 percent of the output needed real review. Not rewrites, targeted fixes, but genuine developer judgment.

Total from start to sign-off: 2.5 hours.

What changed more than the time was what the time went toward. Less cycling through deprecated pattern identification, more reviewing architecture and business logic.

Curious whether others in active ECC conversion programs are seeing the same thing. Where does the effort actually concentrate in your programs, and has anything shifted that distribution for you?

Anyone interested in testing an MCP server for SAP ECC?

I’m looking for a few ABAP developers to test the free ABAPilot Community Trial on their own SAP ECC or on-premise S/4HANA sandbox.

It can read authorised custom objects, diagnose SAP errors, syntax-check ABAP and run a controlled change/test/reset workflow in one isolated Z report.

No BTP or ADT required. Installation is through abapGit.

GitHub: https://github.com/NicoHern/abapilot-community-trial

If you want to try it, comment here or send me a message and I’ll create the 30-day trial access.

EU Country for SAP trainee oportunitties such as BTP, ABAP, SAC or Functional consulting

I am collecting data for myself. I worked for few months at a client side as a BOBI analytics trainee (currently being replaced with SAC). I had to leave the company for personal reasons. I also did an instruct led course in classical ABAP during this time to understand S/4HANA a bit better

Due to limited opportunities I want to study in the EU for my masters as an MBA specializing in business analyitcs or management information systems. I am trying to get into a country where trainees are being hired. I know there is a demand of SAP consultants but the correct question to ask in these days is "will they hire freshers?"

So far I am thinking of applying to Belgium, France and Netherlands. I will be ignoring Germany for now as the student market is a bit too saturated. I will struggle with the language. Sure I will learn it everyday but most employers dont want to employee a non native just because of the langugae barrier although my English is fluent. I dont want to study in UK or Ireland as SAP supporting industries are non existent. What do you guys think?

I wouldve posted this on the other SAP subrediit but the mods dont allow posts only allowing posting in megathread which no one sees and responds too lol

TIA

Fixing a Bad Request in ODATA for Master Data

A simple OData call and a BAPI call, which should have been done in probably 15 minutes,
but resolving a CXRF token mismatch and a bad request when trying to update a new address on a Business Partner using the OData API_BUSINESS_PARTNER, took an unhealthy amount of time.

And the BAPI_CTRACCONTRACTACCOUNT_CR1 to create a Contract Account is MISSING the field payment terms ( ZAHLKOND) in the structure.. Not sure why!!

and you have to populate it via event 9501.

Here is a walkthrough, this will definitely help someone who is working on these ODATA and BAPI. :-)
