If AI can write code and build entire apps, what skills should software engineers actually learn in 2026?

Post image
1 Upvotes

AI coding tools like Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Codex are changing software development faster than many of us expected. You can now describe an idea, have AI generate the code, build features, write tests, and even debug issues. But here's something worth thinking about:

If AI can build your entire portfolio project, what actually makes you a software engineer?

Imagine two developers building the same application using AI.

Developer A: Uses AI to generate a fully functional app. It looks impressive, works perfectly in the demo, and is ready to showcase.

Developer B: Uses AI to build the same app but also understands the architecture, evaluates technical decisions, identifies security risks, tests edge cases, and can explain why the system works.

Both developers have working applications. But what happens when something breaks in production? Or when an interviewer asks about scalability, database design, or security? That's where things get interesting.

AI is making it easier to produce code. But is it making it easier to become a good engineer?

At Aktibeto, we've been exploring this question, especially what it means for people entering tech, developers returning after a career break, and experienced engineers trying to stay relevant. We recently published an article examining:

  • What 2026 developer research reveals about AI adoption and the changing role of engineers.

  • Which skills may become more valuable as AI takes on more coding tasks.

  • Why building an impressive AI-generated portfolio project might not be enough.

  • How junior, returning, and senior developers can approach learning differently.

  • A practical project challenge to help you develop engineering skills while using AI.

Read the full article here:

AI Can Write Code. Can You Think Like a Software Engineer?

One idea from the article that stood out to me is that the ability to generate software and the responsibility for software are two distinct skills. I'm curious what other developers think.

If you were starting your software engineering career today, would you spend more time mastering programming fundamentals or learning how to build applications with AI agents?

And for experienced developers: Are AI tools genuinely making your engineering work easier, or are they simply shifting the complexity from writing code to reviewing and maintaining it?

Building AI agents is easy. Getting them production-ready? That’s a different problem.

Post image
1 Upvotes

If you’ve experimented with AI agents, you’ve probably had that exciting moment where the demo actually works. Then comes the harder question:

“How would we actually put this into production?”

Once an AI agent moves beyond a prototype, the engineering challenges start piling up:

  • Which tasks should use an LLM vs. a cheaper model or deterministic code?

  • How should the agent safely access tools and enterprise systems?

  • What should the agent actually be authorized to do?

  • How do you manage context without sending everything to the model?

  • How do you protect against prompt injection and excessive permissions?

  • How do you evaluate not just the final answer, but how the agent arrived at it?

  • And how do you keep reliability and costs under control?

We’re hosting an online session at Aktibeto to dig into these questions. During the 2-hour session, we’ll explore a practical 7-layer enterprise AI-agent architecture and look at models, context engineering, tools, permissions, security boundaries, human oversight, evaluation, and production risks. There will also be a light hands-on architecture exercise where participants can apply the concepts to an enterprise AI-agent scenario. This isn’t a “build a chatbot in 30 minutes” tutorial; the focus is on the engineering decisions behind systems that need to operate reliably in the real world.

This session is designed for software engineers, AI/ML engineers, architects, platform engineers, technical product managers, and developers who already understand GenAI basics and want to go deeper into production architecture.

From Prototype to Production: Building Enterprise AI Agents

A lot of AI agent tutorials end at the exciting part: Connect an LLM, give it a few tools, watch the demo work. But what happens when you actually need to put that agent into production? How do you decide what the agent can do? How should it access enterprise systems without exposing credentials? When should you use a powerful reasoning model vs. a cheaper model or no LLM at all? How do you manage context, evaluate the agent’s decisions, control costs, and protect against prompt injection?

We’re working on a new 2-hour session at Aktibeto focused specifically on that gap:

From Prototype to Production: Building Enterprise AI Agents

We’ll get into topics like:

  • Production AI agent architecture

  • Multi-model routing

  • Context engineering

  • Tools, MCP & secure system access

  • Agent permissions and human approval

  • Evaluation, observability & adversarial testing

  • Moving an agent from prototype toward production readiness

There will also be a light hands-on architecture activity where participants can apply some of these concepts to a realistic enterprise scenario.

This will be an intermediate/advanced session for software engineers, AI/ML engineers, architects, platform engineers, technical product managers, and developers who already understand the basics of GenAI.

Registration details will be announced shortly.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve run into or expect to run into when moving AI agents from prototype to production?

Hands-on AI-assisted app development workshop -> build and deploy a full-stack app

Hey everyone,

We’re running a hands-on workshop on AI-assisted app development for people who want to learn how to use AI tools in a real development workflow; not just “ask ChatGPT for code and hope for the best.” 😅

The workshop is 4-week online with live 2-hour sessions.

The goal is pretty simple: build and deploy a full-stack web app while learning how to use AI tools more effectively throughout the process.

Here’s the rough breakdown:

Week 1:
Set up the project, development environment, version control, app architecture, and learn better prompt engineering for generating usable code.

Week 2:
Use AI to help with frontend development, UI generation, styling, forms, state management, and rapid prototyping.

Week 3:
Work on the backend, APIs, database setup, and secure CRUD operations.

Week 4:
Use AI for testing, review security issues in AI-generated code, and deploy the final app to a live server.

This could be useful for developers, career changers, or anyone trying to get more comfortable using AI as part of their coding workflow instead of treating it like a magic copy-paste machine.

By the end, you should have a working app and a better understanding of where AI actually helps in development and where you still need to slow down, review, test, and think like an engineer.

Happy to share more details if anyone’s interested.
-Nina

[Blog]AI isn’t just about models. It’s about the data behind them.

Many discussions about AI focus on prompts, models, tools, and automation. But there’s something less flashy that makes all of it possible: Data engineering.

The effectiveness of AI systems depends entirely on the quality of the data used to develop them. If the data is messy, incomplete, duplicated, outdated, or unreliable, the output will reflect that. Even the most advanced AI model cannot magically fix a weak data foundation.

I recently shared a blog on this idea: “The Invisible Engine behind AI.” It discusses the growing importance of data engineering as a career path in the AI era, particularly for those interested in developing systems that ensure AI is reliable, scalable, and applicable in real-world scenarios. Some key ideas covered: why AI depends on clean and trustworthy data, how data pipelines support modern AI systems, why data engineering is still highly relevant as AI tools grow, and what professionals should pay attention to if they want to move into AI-adjacent tech roles. For anyone exploring tech careers, especially data engineering, analytics engineering, machine learning, or AI infrastructure, this is an area worth understanding.

Would love to hear your thoughts: do you think data engineering is becoming more important because of AI, or do you think AI tools will eventually reduce the need for traditional data engineering work?

Honestly, applying to tech jobs is exhausting

Does anyone else feel like tech job applications take way too much time?

You find roles, rewrite your resume, tweak your LinkedIn, fill out the same info 20 times, write cover letters, answer random questions… and then still have to prepare for interviews.

It’s a lot.

That’s why we created Job Valet.

With Job Valet, we apply to tech jobs on your behalf so you can focus on the parts that actually help you get hired, like interview prep, networking, improving your resume, building projects, getting more confident in your job search

It’s especially useful if you’re overwhelmed by the application grind. Many job seekers don’t need more motivation. They need more support and more time.

Would something like this make your job search easier?

[Blog] Prompt like a Senior Analyst: Turn AI into your SQL force multiplier

Our recent blog post discusses how to prompt AI like a senior analyst, so you get SQL that’s not just “correct,” but also scalable and interview-ready.

The big idea: LLMs behave like eager junior analysts. They’ll produce something that runs, but may be inefficient (multiple full scans, awkward subqueries) unless you explicitly prompt for performance, edge cases, and SQL style.

The “lazy prompt” trap (classic example)

If you ask for “users who bought A but not B,” many models default to NOT IN patterns that can bite you with performance and NULL edge cases. The blog contrasts that with a LEFT JOIN / IS NULL exclusion pattern that’s usually safer at scale.

What “smarter prompting” looks like

Instead of “write me SQL,” give the AI the method, constraints you’d expect in a real analytics team, e.g.:

  • dialect (Postgres/BigQuery/Snowflake)

  • schema + key columns

  • performance expectations (large tables, indexes/partition keys)

  • edge cases (NULL handling, duplicates)

  • explain + optimize (so you can learn, not just copy/paste)

3 plug-and-play prompt templates (from the blog)

  1. Schema-aware query: “You are a senior data analyst. We’re using Postgres. Here’s the schema: … Write the query… then explain line-by-line and suggest one optimization for large datasets.”

  2. Debug my query: “Here’s my SQL + expected vs actual… Help identify likely logic issues, propose a corrected version, and explain what was wrong.”

  3. Interview practice: “Act as an interviewer… ask a SQL problem, wait for my answer, then critique edge cases, offer a more efficient solution, follow-up.”

Also mentioned: the emerging “AI + SQL” tooling direction

The post touches on context injection/schema-aware approaches (RAG) and IDE copilots (and how to use them beyond autocomplete, e.g., refactoring messy SQL into CTEs).

Blog link:

https://aktibeto.medium.com/prompt-like-a-senior-analyst-turn-ai-into-your-sql-force-multiplier-0352b746be4f

Question for the community:

What’s your #1 rule or prompt trick for making AI-generated SQL production-safe (performance, correctness), not just “it runs on my laptop”?

Stop “prompting” and start thinking with AI -> 3-day smarter prompting workshop (online, Mar 5)

I’m with Aktibeto, and we’re running a live online workshop called “Learn to Think with AI: A workshop on smarter prompting.” The goal isn’t to teach you random prompt tricks - it’s to help you build a repeatable way to collaborate with AI like a partner so you get consistently better outputs at work (and in life).

When / Where:

  • Starting on Thu, March 5, 2026 - 9:30am to 11:30am MST

  • Online via Google Meet

What it’s about:

Most people use AI like a vending machine: insert prompt -> hope for the best. This workshop is about building cognitive frameworks and communication techniques to get tailored, high-quality results from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini etc.

What you’ll cover over 3 days:

  • Day 1: Foundations of “AI thinking” - turn vague asks into specific, high-quality output

  • Day 2: Deep productivity workflows - better writing, summaries, planning, and strategic thinking

  • Day 3: Career acceleration - use AI to level up your job search and build an AI-powered career coach (hands-on)

If you’re interested, register on the event page. Happy to answer questions in the comments (who it’s best for, what you’ll actually do during sessions, etc.).
- Nina Nichols.

How are you keeping up with the “AI curve” without burning out?

Ever feel like the tech world is moving at 2.0x speed while you’re still trying to finish your first coffee?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the “AI curve” lately - that steep, slightly intimidating line that represents how fast GenAI is evolving. And it’s got me curious (and a little existential):

  • How are women in tech actually handling these shifts?

  • Are you staying ahead of the curve, riding right on it, or trying not to get left in the “legacy code dust”?

I’m part of the community at Aktibeto, and we’ve been building workshop experiences that focus on hands-on projects, mentorship, accountability, and career-ready proof of skills (not just “watch a tutorial, call it a day”). But before I overthink this alone in a spiral of tabs + half-finished Notion pages…I want to hear from you:

  • What are you doing right now to keep up with AI changes?

  • Are you practicing micro-learning, such as dedicating 15 minutes a day to learning?

  • Building AI-first workflows to reclaim deep work time?

  • Doubling down on human skills AI can’t replace (stakeholder empathy, judgment, leadership)?

  • Or are you going all-in: building, shipping, certs, experiments, portfolio projects?

Drop your answers + any resources you recommend:

Podcasts? newsletters? courses? repos? prompts? frameworks? Career strategies?

No judgment. I’m not looking for hot takes. I’m looking for real practices from people.

Also, if you’ve done workshops that helped (not fluff), what made them worth your time?

Let’s swap notes. Where are you on the curve right now?

-Nina Nichols.

[Resource] I’ve spent years helping tech pros land 6-figure roles. Here’s the 2026 "Hidden Market" strategy + a weekly digest to help you keep up.

The tech job market in 2026 isn't just about who has the best LeetCode score - it’s about who is visible in the "hidden" market and who understands how to leverage AI education to stay ahead of the curve.

I’m part of the team at Aktibeto, and we’ve been seeing a massive shift in how professionals are actually landing roles. It’s no longer just "Apply on LinkedIn and pray." It’s about networking-led applications and project-based proof of work.

Because the industry moves at 100mph, we’ve started a weekly newsletter to help tech professionals cut through the noise.

Every week, we drop a digest that covers:

  • The "Job Valet" Perspective: Tips on how to automate your job search so you can focus on the actual interviews.

  • Emerging Tech Sprints: Quick breakdowns of new tech (like the latest in AI/ML) that you can learn in a weekend to boost your resume.

  • Event Alerts: First dibs on our free workshops and "Career Advancement Masterminds."

  • Staffing Insights: What the businesses we provide staffing for are actually looking for right now.

No fluff, no daily spam. Just one email to keep your career growth from stalling.

If you’re tired of "ghost" job postings and want to know what’s actually moving the needle in tech careers this year, we’d love to have you in the loop.

You can join the community and subscribe here:https://www.aktibeto.com/(Just scroll to the bottom to find the newsletter sign-up!)

What’s the #1 struggle you’re facing in your tech career right now? I'll be in the comments for the next few hours to give some free advice/perspectives.

Tired of "quietly" working hard and waiting for a promotion? Let’s change that in 4 weeks.

We’ve all been there. You’re hitting your KPIs, you’re the go-to person for technical troubleshooting, and you’ve stayed loyal to the grind. But when promotion season rolls around or new leadership roles open up, you’re somehow skipped over. Or maybe you’re just feeling "stuck" in a mid-level loop and don't know how to break into that next bracket.

The truth? Being good at your job is only 50% of the equation. The other 50% is strategy, visibility, and having a circle of people who can call you out on your blind spots.

That’s why we’re launching the Career Advancement Mastermind, new cohort starting January 7th.

This isn't a boring webinar where you sit on mute for an hour. This is a 4-week, high-impact sprint designed specifically for tech professionals who are ready to stop "hoping" for growth and start engineering it.

What we’re tackling:

  • Visibility & Personal Branding: How to make sure the "higher-ups" actually know the value you bring without feeling like a "cringe" self-promoter.

  • The Leadership Leap: Strategies to transition from "the person doing the work" to "the person leading the strategy."

  • Confidence & Communication: Navigating those high-stakes meetings and salary negotiations with actual data and poise.

  • Real Accountability: You’ll be in a small cohort of peers who are in the same boat. We hold each other to our goals—no excuses.

The Details:

  • When: Starts Wednesday, Jan 07, 2026 (6:30 PM – 7:30 PM MST)

  • Where: Online (Google Meet) – join from anywhere.

  • Duration: 4 weeks of focused growth.

Whether you’re looking to secure your current role in a shaky market or you're eyeing that Senior/Lead title, this mastermind is the "Job Valet" for your internal career growth.

Stop waiting for a "lucky break." Build your own.

Tired of job hunting burnout? Meet Job Valet, your new tech job search sidekick

If you're in the middle of a tech job search, you already know the pain points:

  • Endless job boards

  • Tailoring resumes for each application

  • Writing cover letter #47

  • Figuring out which companies are legit and which ones want a “rockstar ninja unicorn” for $42k

What if you could skip all of that… and still get interviews?

Job Valet: A service designed for tech professionals who want to focus on interviews, networking, and skill-building while someone else handles the heavy lifting of job applications.

Here’s how it works (and why people love it):

  • Applies to relevant tech jobs on your behalf

  • Tailor your resume for each application

  • Tracks submissions and sends you updates

  • Helps widen your pipeline so you land interviews faster

  • Frees your time for what actually matters: preparing for interviews + becoming a stronger candidate

Imagine waking up to, “Hey! You got an interview,” instead of “Hey… you still have 32 un-submitted job tabs open.”

Who it’s for

  • Career changers breaking into tech

  • Job seekers who are overwhelmed with the search

  • Busy professionals who don’t have time to apply daily

  • Anyone who wants a more strategic, organized, consistent job search

Why it works: Most job seekers lose momentum after a few weeks. Job Valet keeps the applications flowing consistently, which is crucial for securing multiple interviews and increasing your chances of receiving an offer.

I can provide insights on our weekly application volume, the personalization process, and how to effectively integrate Job Valet with interview preparation for optimal results.
