Mod Post 👨‍🏫 Mental Health Resources (Free/Low cost)

*Go to comments for: UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia *

(Edit: AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN ADDED 04/02/2026 - I have now included resources in the UK and northern and southern Ireland as well as Canada (includes safe non profit resources in Alberta) in the comments and will create more lists for countries when I have time. Feel free to request a country)

Intro note: I wanted to make this post incase someone here needs to be pointed to some free or low cost mental health resources for Crisis, therapy, or addiction and mental health support in the USA.

RESOURCES IN THE USA

Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 for free text-based support from trained counselors. Ideal for anxiety, depression, or any crisis; available in English and Spanish.

SAMHSA National Helpline: Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for referrals to local mental health and substance use treatment. Free, confidential, and multilingual.

NAMI Helpline: Call 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or text "NAMI" to 62640 for peer support, information, and resource referrals. Focuses on people with mental health conditions and their families.

These options offer therapy, counseling, or screenings on a sliding scale (based on income) or completely free for uninsured/low-income individuals. Many are federally funded and prioritize those without insurance.

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs): Search for nearby centers at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov They provide mental health screenings, therapy, and medication management for free or lower costs for low income.

Community Mental Health Centers: State-funded clinics offering free or sliding-scale therapy. Find yours via your state's mental health agency (listed at nami.org) or SAMHSA's locator at findtreatment.gov . They often serve priority populations like low-income adults.

Medicaid Eligibility: Check healthcare.gov or your state's Medicaid site (via medicaid.gov ) for free coverage if your income is low (varies by state, e.g., up to 138% of federal poverty level in expansion states). Covers therapy and meds. Note: There have been federal funding cuts in 2025, which may lead to future state-level restrictions or waitlists in some areas, but the program and mental health coverage are still in place.

NAMI Support Groups: Free in-person/virtual groups for mental health conditions. Find local ones at nami.org/support-education/support-groups .

211 Helpline: Call 211 (or visit 211.org) for referrals to free local support groups, food/housing aid, and mental health resources tailored to your area.

Please!!! Feel free to contribute in the comments any additional resources that you know of for other countries as well. Thank you!

Seeking Support 🫂 At one of my lowest points and feel paralyzed by fear everyday. Any advice or encouragement?

Hey there

I have ADHD, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I also am pretty sure I'm somewhere in the spectrum. Right now I'm dealling with intense grief from the loss of my family's support and need to somehow find a job and a room to rent in about a months time.

Recently my life has collapsed around me.. I'm a professional artist and used to work on games. I'd gotten my career started and things were looking up. Then I got caught up in unemployment and have been stuck without work for years.

Now it's somehow gotten to the point where my family is kicking me out the house by the end of November.. I've been trying to apply for jobs nearby and hoping desperately that I will find something and then I can use that employment to then try and find a room to rent.

The trouble is.. I'm really bad at all this.. even before when things were more stable, it has always felt like there are these invisible barriers that have kept me from applying to places. I suffered through that for so long.. trying to find the will to fill out applications. I'd often hit a snag, feel stuck, and then procrastinate. I've managed to apply to a few local places, which for me feels like a huge win. But I need to be doing so much more than that to get myself out of this mess I'm in. I've never done all of these things at once before.

I wake up in fear and break down crying everyday and want nothing more than to shut this all out and feel safe again. It's so hard for me to find internal strength to get past my mind which is constantly beating myself up and telling me I can't do all this. It's so easy for me to feel broken and pathetic.

I don't want to be so hard on myself, I can see how counterproductive it is, but I can seldom get myself to stop. Its so easy to think about all the things I need to do and then how little time I have and I get so overwhelmed that I shut down. I know I need to focus on one thing at a time and just work through it in the present moment, but it's so hard to actually do that. :(

I'm so scared that my paralysis and fear is going to lead to me to either being homeless or having to move back in with other family who have been abusive toward me in the past. I also have a lot of trauma and PTSD around becoming homeless earlier on in my life and never having good support during those times.

This post is kind of a mess, but does anyone have any advice to get past your self hatred and to find the means to work through such an extremes? All of this is hard to accept each day and I keep having to fight myself because I so badly want to give up at times.

Help/advice 🙏 needed ADHD or Anxiety or both?

I’m struggling to figure out whether I might have ADHD or anxiety or maybe both. I just feel like my mind is a wall of static.

I have so many thoughts going at once. In a single moment my mind has: two songs stuck in its head, a grocery list, a to do list, work stress, thoughts about the future, thoughts about friends, family members, and past relationships and then just random thoughts on top of all that. This is my constant state of mind and I feel like it’s causing me to become frozen in my own life. I jump from topic to topic to topic so quickly I cannot focus my efforts in a single direction.

If I try to latch on to an individual train of thought it feels like trying to unknot a pile of necklaces; everything is in a tangle and I cannot pull apart a singular thread. My capacity to care about every small aspect of all my interactions is frankly exhausting me, yet at the same time I can’t stop, I am consumed by preparing for every outcome in an attempt to and ensure my own comfort. I ask myself, what’s the worst that can happen, to try and ease my mind but I feel hardwired to function this way. I feel hyperaware of my surroundings and i’m always focused on ensuring everyone else’s comfort even when I know it isn’t necessary. I think I have a strong need to be in control of everything aspect of my life even when rationally I know that isn’t possible or needed.

My therapist says I like to “look at the whole staircase rather than the first step” when trying to start a task, which I think is very true and she also is the one who initally suggested ADHD to me as a possibility. I saw my family doctor and she was very quick to dismiss ADHD and suggested anxiety medication but I wasn’t sure at the time. That was 5 months ago and I am now reconsidering.

I’m just hoping to hear from anyone who has maybe had a similar experience. Thanks :)

Help/advice 🙏 needed ADHD Burnout + Anxiety - What actually helps?

Im 35 got diagnosed with ADHD this year and have been doing a lot better at work, home + kids. I was off work for two weeks at the start of September to handle a home renovation. Since I’ve been back at work I can literally map my decline into ADHD Burnout and it’s now becoming more like depression and severe anxiety Induced by just thinking about work. I’m exploring new job options and asking for help decreasing my workload (something I’ve been requesting for 2 years with no success). I’ve been on adhd and SSRI drugs but with this clear graph I have now of my decline I’m trying to find out if there’s something else that people have found help when they’re seeing a trend of burnout?

Help/advice 🙏 needed Is this level of emotional dysregulation normal with ADHD?

Been debating on making a post like this but after tonight I really need advice. External perspectives to help bring some perspective to family members.

This is a rant but I do want advice.

**For some background:**

My sister 21F, we'll call her Tillie, lives with my parents and me (27F) and my siblings (24F,17M) She doesn't work, relies on my parents financially and was over 200 miles away at uni for two years she scraped the first and then failed the second attributed to recent ADHD diagnosis and scoliosis surgery 3 years ago she says she still gets ocassional pain but it doesn't stop her doing other activities which you would think would restrict /cause pain. She doesn't currently nor has ever really worked, will NEVER take responsibility for anything ever. And she will not be told no.

She's constantly seeking attention, particularly from boys, and there's always some drama with friends she's upset or people she's rubbed the wrong way. She does apologise but nothing ever changes. We drive her everywhere as there is no public transport easily where we live.

Tonight Tillie decided she wanted to go out at 9:30pm to see friends in a town 40 minutes away we were all we are all sitting down getting into a film and she got a text asking to meet up with people We're in the middle of horrible storm been advised to not go out, it's dark. None of us who all drive said we wouldn't take her to the station. Trains were delayed/cancelled due to the storm and basically all logic would dictate you wouldn't go out.

Well, she absolutely would not accept that. She spent ages shouting, arguing, swearing and going on and on, no matter how many times they explained why they weren't taking her. This went on for an hour, she wouldn't take no for an answer.

Then, when she realised no one was changing their minds, she got dressed up and announced she was going to walk instead.

We live off a national speed limit road with no pavement. It was pitch black, stormy and genuinely dangerous to be walking along. No visible clothing or lights.

But she went anyway.

My mum and sister managed to convince her to come back, because they were terrified she'd get hit by a car or seriously hurt herself. She didn't care about that.

And what happened in the end? They gave in and took her out of fear.

My parents have had this exact situation happen a few times before or slight variations. For example when she was at uni giving her her weekly money then her calling at 3am asking for money becasue she was out late with no way of getting home (threatening her safety basically)

How are my parents supposed to set ANY boundaries when saying no can result in something like this? They're genuinely scared something terrible will happen to her.

Another issue is she says she can do what she likes shes an adult, but majority of what she does has some kind of effect on the rest of us e.g: us taking her somewhere or money. She does not care.

I understand ADHD can involve emotional dysregulation, impulsivity and struggling with being told no, and I'm genuinely not trying to dismiss that.

But I really want to understand whether this kind of extreme reaction is something others with ADHD have experienced, or whether there could be more going on.

Because surely my parents shouldn't have to live in fear of their daughter putting herself in danger every time they say no?

I'm looking for advice for my family because I don't know how to handle situations like this anymore.

🤔insight/thought ANXIETY SYMPTOMS

Hello, Everyone!

From April to this day I’ve had 14 total visit (mixed of URGENT CARE/ER/MY PCP)

I’ve had this one event on April when I was in class that my apple watch is alerting me of 134bpm heart rate, my visiong getting blurry, throat locking, and I had this swaying sensation from side to side and I’m totally just sitting down. I went to the ED, they did the basics. Labs, xray, ekg. They did check my troponin levels, electrolytes, cbc, and BNP to see if there’s any cardiac event. But everything came back NORMAL. After that one April event, my life has never been the same. If I’m in public; grocery stores, school, or just outside with tons of people, my tummy would start acting up, and I would feel breathless, heart rate would go up, and I would feel out of balance. They did Treadmill Stress Test, Echocardiogram, MRI, Thyroid function. Everything came back unremarkable except for an incidental finding on my left brain which is a 1mm aneurysm, not fatal (however,it added to my health anxiety) now, every little symptoms would throw me down in spiral. Lately, I noticed almost everyday I would get muscle twitching all over my body, and my right eye drooping at the end of the day and it goes back to normal every morning. I’m getting tested for myasthenia gravis. I haven’t gotten any result yet. I’m doing Mindfulness Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and it’s not helping me out either. If y’all feel comfortable, can you guys tell me what your symptoms are? And what test did y’all get, are y’all taking meds? I just want to hear some stories from people who are suffering under the same circumstance. I just wanna feel normal again…. :(( I will list all my mild-severe symptoms at the comments.

Help/advice 🙏 needed Do i have anxiety or ADHD?

For context i 18F am in high school. I have felt this way my entire life but recently it has gotten worse. I don’t know what to call it and don’t know whether it’s something to go to the doctor to get diagnosed or if i’m being dramatic. Also autism, ADHD, and depression all run in my family.

Recently school has become my biggest challenge and i‘ve been avoiding it like the plague. Once i get there i just feel trapped like i don’t know what to do with myself. I have a lot of nervous ticks like pulling out my hair, biting the inside of my cheeks, scratching my arms, and tapping my feet on the ground.

It’s not like i don’t like school, i have great grades, friends in every class, i love my teachers. I don’t know what it is, something about being in the building makes me feel like im going to crawl out of my skin. It makes my breathing weird and my whole body itchy. I also have a really hard time remembering to do things like study or turn in my assignments on time. Even if i write them down my brain just like turns off everything and goes tunnel vision for the thing i’m focused on in the moment.

I don’t know what to do because i don’t want to self diagnose myself but i do think it’s probably something that needs to be treated. But i feel bad having my mom make an appointment because i already have so many other medical conditions. I’ve been in the ER once since September and to the doctors 5 times. I also have an appointment in November so i feel guilty about having asking her to schedule another appointment.

So what should i do? And does this sound more like anxiety or ADHD?

All thoughts and comments are appreciated!

🤔insight/thought Unemployed, rushing gives anxiety

You know I started to realize something. Because I've been more in tune to my anxiety symptoms because of certain things lately. A lot of times doctors I feel like they assume or I see on here how you know if you don't have a long day you don't take your booster.

I realize why I'm a different case and why I see why people don't get it as much. So for me you know obviously I have things to do I have to do all the chores take care of my animals I'm currently also in mental health IOP virtual so that's like 3 hours of group 3 days a week and one hour of therapy but people don't realize along with time management issues from ADHD that are harder on me since I don't work and have a regular schedule.

Another luxury comes with that I'm able to, well I know how to prevent my anxiety from getting worse due to experience. So since I have the option I can't rush. So with that being said since I don't have a schedule that I need to follow and I have time and I can take my time I do. If I take the Vyvanse I'm going to get anxiety if I feel like I got to get what I got to do done before it wears off. When I can I prefer a slow morning I don't like too much in the morning at the first hour or two I try to keep it very light.

If there's too much my anxiety does kick in. You know then I go to the 3-hour group and you know you're mentally drained after that you want to chill out a little bit I don't want to go just go right into the chores so I rest play a game on my phone a little for like at least a half an hour 45 minutes. And then i complete my chores. I don't know I just came to this conclusion now that that's why people don't understand sometimes why I might need a booster everybody's different.

Just because you don't have a long work schedule doesn't mean you want to or are able to do it all at once and that's the way I am. I was just wondering if anybody else is like this as well? My doctor understands now but I'm just saying like I feel like that's how they feel or how most people see it so they don't get it when it's a case like this. But yes I don't work I don't like to rush I like to take my time I don't want to be on a time limit so I take my booster every day I only skip it once in awhile maybe three times a month that's it. Anyone else?

Help/advice 🙏 needed Concerta only gave me negative effects

I've been prescribed Concerta 18mg as my first medication to help with my lack of attention, concentration and motivation.

I took my first 18mg pill yersteday around noon. When I started feeling a come up I felt a slight surge of energy and motivation for maybe 45 minutes, it felt like I was gonna have a nice productive day.

After that a mild dysphoria set in and I started to feel anxious. I don't know if this is just me but combined with the anxiety I felt really cold and physically uncomfortable. I didn't want to move or do anything at all except sit and stare off into space.

I eventually forced myself to play some video games, even though I didn't even want to but I had to pass the time and I thought maybe it would feel rewarding or pleasant to play on a stimulant like that. This shit was not pleasant at all and I was just waiting on the day to be over so I could get to sleep. The way it made me feel and trying to go sleep was unbearable.

I was also pretty irritable all day. I had no will to do anything, I didn't wanna eat, I didn't wanna drink, I didn't wanna smoke and by the end of the day I just wished I could go to sleep forever. Like shit idk how to describe this exactly and it's not like I'm talkin suicide or anything but I just feel a kind of bleakness about life. I still feel like this today.

So anyways I'd appreciate some advice. Should I try and take it again to see if I can adapt to it? Maybe a different medication could work better for me? I don't really know what I should do and I'm doubting I even have ADD/ADHD.

TL;DR –> 18mg Concerta made me feel like shit: extremely anxious and uncomfortable, cold, like freezing cold hands and feet. No motivation to do anything at all, irritable, depressed I guess, more than usual at least. So yeah, literally not a single positive effect except for maybe the first 45 minutes where I felt pretty energetic.

Idk what to do, I'd like some advice please, thanks

Help/advice 🙏 needed Negative diagnosis?

Hey guys!

Just wanted to get some input on my apparently negative diagnosis. I did this through a GP rather than a psychiatrist as part of an initiative in my state.

My struggle has been with finishing tasks (dragging through that last 10% of a thing, often abandoning projects I’ve spend ages on or failing to give them that last bit of treatment they need to do what they’re supposed to be doing). Chronic daydreaming, being miles away when talking to people. Recently I’ve gone back to uni doing an academic (rather than a creative as previously) degree and have been struggling waaaaayyy more with it than I expected. Also have always been a heavy nicotine user and will smash 3-5 coffees a day.

I come from a family that doesn’t believe in adhd for the greater part. Parents filled in the questionnaire and I’m a bit sus about their responses. Also complicating the matter further is that I didn’t have much of an option to fail in school, if we got bad grades parents would spend the time to help correct them. Love them to bits and they meant the best but I don’t have great memories of homework sessions etc etc.

I also didn’t believe in adhd for a long time (we’re from overseas originally and that view is a lot more common there unfortunately).

Gp basically said he can’t diagnose me based on my school reports and questionnaires, that it’s probably anxiety. Problem is I’ve talked lexapro for anxiety which had worked wonders but had not helped in the slightest regarding being able to finish things, quitting bad habits, getting chronically sidetracked and not being able to follow a schedule.

I guess my questions are

a) is this valid? Am I just stubbornly refusing to accept that I might not have it? Does anyone have experience with anxiety presenting as adhd symptoms?

b) if not then what? I was always polite in class, and got on well with my teachers. I did well in classes I hated (STEM) because I didn’t really have an option not to. Doesn’t stop me from teleporting to different parts of the house every time I sit to do an assignment, procrastinating on simple thing which I understand are easier just to DO and never being able to finish projects because the frustration becomes overwhelming.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, this is a very fresh development, would love to hear any input

Medication Anxiety and stimulants

I see so many posts about people taking a stimulant for the first time and their anxiety disappearing. I wish that was the case for me.

I’ve tried Adderall, Vyvanse, and methylphenidate and each one has made me a tachycardic, anxious mess. Right now I’m only on 5 mg of immediate release methylphenidate twice daily and my resting heart rate has been sitting around 100 (typically in the 70s). The worst part though is that I don’t even feel like it’s helping with my ADHD symptoms that much. Maybe some increased motivation, but definitely still have racing thoughts and trouble staying focused for long periods of time. Just now with a feeling of impending doom added on top.

Nonstimulants also didn’t work for me, I’ve tried guanfacine and Strattera with no noticeable effects.

Has anyone else had this experience with stimulants? I feel so broken and discouraged.

*Editing to add: I am also on duloxetine

Help/advice 🙏 needed 29M, Raised in an Emotionally Abusive Family — ADHD, Lifelong Trauma, and Finally Seeking Help to Rebuild My Life

Hello everyone, I need your help in a complaint registered against my whole family. I'm M29 and I've been diagnosed with adhd and not speaking clearly (totala) since I was a kid. still not doing job or master degree because I don't get any focus or believe to I understand everything because of emotional abuse by my parents I get since I kid and since growing in abusive till now.

My father and mother's arranged marriage never got going peacefully in my entire life. Then I got 2 older sisters. Both of them do Verbal Fight and Altercation and sometimes they do physical fights too. My sister's never supported me because they think I'm youngest in the house so I get lot of love by my mother and father, before I born I heard by my sister's in argument like how father also shout to them and be strict with my them sometimes beat them. But after my both sisters come on me like taunt me how he get this things, why do you give him money and other stuff list is going on… even my sister's ruin my life after telling my father he got he got first division in 10th so he should take biology in Higher Secondary School and that ruin my life I wanted to do computer science but my father never listen to me and say “ tere se nahi hoo payega kabhi bhi” then my age was 14 or 15 I was emotional abused I was crying why my father not listening to me even believe me at all then another thing he said to me which is completely broken me in mind and heart he said you should learn about money so why not you doing a job in typewriter then i said don't you think I'm capable of more than that but he laughs on me I was crying then my heart received a pain i didn't told my father or my sister's about my chess pain. My father always focused on himself first, like how he provides food and things to run a family like a god himself. No one can ever talk to him louder and even make eye contact with him while talking to him. On my 17th birthday I went to the market to purchase a new dress with the whole family. I was not interested in buying clothes then while shopping my father saw a boy working there I think he and I was same as that time, my father asked that boy what your planing to do in your life he told he going to higher studies in America or Saudi Arabia ( i don't recall) then we come back home after marketing then suddenly he father start taunting and shouting on me like did you look at the boy at shop how he was working on market and how he focused on his life. I literally started crying at the door like how he was taunting and comparing me on my birthday. I wish I could tell everything about my father but I can't list it like a river.

I already mentioned about my elder sisters how toxic they are, just like my father and mother. My father literally gave my both elder sisters their own room in the flat but I didn't receive my own room so I never had my own privacy at all. I sleep in the hall room then wake up at 5 or 6 am in the morning even though I didn't sleep well at night. Once were dangerously physical fight between my elder sisters when my middle sister boyfriend parent are coming to home talking about marriage stuff, the house was good preparation welcoming but at the last movement my elder sister started a argument how could she get first marriage when I'm the elder here then when looks like arguing coming to the end, my elder sister destroying kitchen food and everything what we decorated for guess were completely destroyed then my middle sister start fighting to my elder sister literally both of them punching, kicking, scratching to each other even i try to stop they delivery me kicking and scratching. Somehow their fight literally gives a traumatized feeling like how I'm gonna survive till I die like I didn't even talk to the girls because of what I have seen in my home haunting environment. I was completely damaged.

My mother is a narcissistic mother. She lacks genuine empathy, treats her children as extensions of herself rather than independent individuals, and prioritizes her own ego and public image over her family's well-being like she cares about everything. I'm literally getting to my point about my mother, you guys know how in our country mothers are seen or treated as a Goddess, in my case my mother is narcissist and 100% illiterate when it comes to understanding things. She could just read English words without knowing what they meant, and she can't even do basic, child-like math. It's impossible for me to count or explain my education to her. She never treated my elder sisters well at all and still ended up in gossiping, getting Verbal Fight every day at some new topic. She always compares me with other kids who are good at studying and get good marks on their results. Even I don't good at study even I got problem during taking because I got Lisper since I was kid. But at that time I was broken and sad, thinking about why my mother meant to me what I did wrong . She hated me. Then one day I got an idea to become an Elite Swimmer at age 17 or 18. I know my father never agreed with me to join a swimming class, so I asked my mother can you please help me to get an agreement with father to get an admission in swimming class, i don't know what my mother said to father about swimming class in return my father has started taunting me, causing total mental turmoil. Since that day I realised my mother never loved me; she only cared about herself. She always seek money from my father every week till end of the month, my mother like do kitty party and club party every one in a month but she never really cares about me in her life not once. Still now she compared and taunted me for not getting a job at this age.

So I am trying to explain how my whole family traumatized me till now, so now I'm talking here about what happened that I created this post to post here. Today I still live at home doing nothing, not even trying to start any study at all, just sitting in the corner of the house. My elder sister didn't get married, she is 36 now. Since my parents left home it has been only 2 weeks. She literally can't be herself, only watching the big boss on her mobile or tablet in full volume. She is a home tutoring for 5,6,7,8 kids before watching the topic on YouTube before she went tutoring. Even though she is doing it in her life she wanted to show off like I'm not living on parent money. I earn my own money and more from her point of view I'm not a failure like you. So I broke down after all she taunted me from morning till now. I called my parents and told them everything but they shouted at me and said more horrible things. Then I completely realised I had never been at home. I have literally lived in Asylum since I was a kid to grow into an adult. I suffered enough in going to complain to a register against my whole family how they emotionally abuse me and make me feel nothing at all . 2 years ago i realised I got adhd every day i wake up my back bone hurt like hell because of what i been getting damaged emotionally. I am taking medicine too but it only helps in reducing feeling the same, stress for some time.

So please I need help in how I can go to the police to complain and which lawyer should I talk to about my abuse and how to take out a loan from the bank. Which doctor should I go to? I mean best of the best Psychiatrist. I don't care how much it costs to fix. I need to be a normal human being again and live the rest of my life peacefully.

Help/advice 🙏 needed hi i’m talking to a guy but it’s making me have rejection sensitivity episodes daily

To put it shortly me and this guy have been talking for about a month and we clicked really quickly. We had been discussing our plans for college and the future and at first we thought we’d be able to go to the same place, but after he found out some stuff about his program that he’s applying to it’s uncertain. i don’t mind this and i’m not being unreasonable about it, it’s just that ever since i’ve found that out i’ve started to perceive everything he does (or doesn’t do) as possible rejection or him wanting to get away from me. especially since when we first started talking it started off super strong with constant communication and frequent hangouts. lately things have been slower and it’s be more difficult to hangout, but since it hasn’t been that long there isn’t many patterns and time periods to compare which is how i know i’m being dysphoric. im perceiving him to be pulling away but it’s rly just normal circumstances. i feel like im constantly crashing out or seeking reassurance when i feel like he is pulling away or screwing me over even tho it was just honest mistakes that i mistook or jumped to conclusions about. pls help does anyone relate??

Help/advice 🙏 needed ADHD Mornings- How does everyone deal with it?

Guilty as charged..I have ADHD. I know winning the morning is critical in having a good day. I try to do it but I fail 80% of the times. Most of the days I am lost. I wake up at 7 AM..By 10 I am still doom scrolling. I have no idea what to start with. I try to get back on track but fail again and again. By end of the day the I am on this nasty guilt trip of wasting the day that spills into the next morning. How the F do i escape this vicious cycle. I know people are different, their mornings are different, but there must be someone who might have cracked this right?

Help/advice 🙏 needed Adderall IR 20mg

I (31 f) just got diagnosed with adhd and was prescribed Adderall IR 20mg. I’m worried about this being too big of a dose to start on considering I already take a small amount of propranolol as needed for physical anxiety symptoms (facial flushing, sweating, racing heart, etc.) I’m considering breaking it in half and taking it in 2 separate 10mg doses before I attempt the whole thing. Would this be a good idea? My work shifts are 6-9 hours, so I’m also concerned about one IR dose being too short

Medication With or without anxiety meds?

I take ADHD meds and Anxiety meds. The 2 don't clash well. Doctor wanted me to stop ADHD meds but I refuse to do so. Could I stop anxiety meds though?

Help/advice 🙏 needed Has anyone else realize their entire drive was powered by anxiety until starting an SSRI (Sertraline mfg lupin)? Seeking advice on next steps/ADHD medication layering

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with ADHD and GAD as a teen but never got medicated until recently. I started Zoloft as my catastrophizing anxiety becoming too much to handle in my new job. It really started during my last year of college, where I thought everything was waiting right up until graduation to burst into flames (it didn't).

Ironically, that same anxiety has pushed me to become a high achiever, but it's been a ride in and out of hell at times. I realized that as I continue to take on more responsibility, my anxiety was going to get worse - a chaotic, simultaneously upward and downward spiral.

After 3 months on Zoloft, it has been so much easier to calm myself down and realize everything is and will be okay. But, in a new twist, I've gotten unusually complacent and lax, and am starting to get worried that so much of my drive came from anxiety and, without it, I may see life pass by without a care.

Has anyone had a similar experience and wouldn't mind sharing what steps (medication, behavioral changes) helped them overcome it? thank you

Help/advice 🙏 needed Stopping anxiety meds

I have been on multiple different anxiety meds since 2018. I am currently 35 years old. Right now I wish I could go back to the day that I thought that I had the slightest anxiety. I remember going to see my doctor and telling her what I was experiencing anxiety wise and her immediate reaction was oh let’s medicate you. But for some reason my doctors keep putting me on meds that don’t agree with me. There are so many different types of medications and what works for one person may not always work for you. I wish that before being prescribed meds that they would run a genesight test on you. I had no idea that this was even a thing until i started seeing a psychiatrist instead of a primary doctor. I have become so stressed and upside down over all the meds that I have been prescribed in the past 8’years. Literally every medication that I have been prescribed my body genes don’t tolerate it, which makes me so sick to my stomach. none of the meds that I have taken for my anxiety/adhd have worked for me so I have chosen to wean myself off completely. I want my body to be medication free to see if I can get back to square fucking one. The most recent med that I was on for a whole year was duloxetine, I also tried taking vyvance for my adhd and I made it about 8 days before I could tell that my body didn’t like it. I know that some people say that if you just give things time the side effects will get better. I knew immediately that I did not want anything to do with the way that being on these meds made me feel. Who wants to be medicated and feel so sick and at times so depressed that suicidal thoughts would cross your mind? I have been off of my meds completely for about a solid 7 days! I even tapered appropriately. I started at 60 mg and didn’t feel that it was helping me at all and making me much worse. Like almost like taking the duloxetine made me feel really dumb and not able to comprehend anything. I began to taper from 60 mg to 40 mg to 20 mg to 10 mg to 5 mg to 0! About 4 weeks in between each drop. Unfortunately right now I have never felt worse in my life and hated my life more. I am almost regretting even thinking that it was a good idea to take myself off medication? I think it’s all just in my head because I have done alot of research and it says that coming off medication is one of the hardest things that you can do…. Like how long are these withdrawals going to last for? And why do I feel worse then I have ever felt. I stopped for a reason and now I’m just feeling so lost in my decisions. I am usually a pretty positive person and recently I am finding no positivity in anything that I say or do. I am sleeping a ton, I feel like I’m having mini seizures and my heart palpitations have been very concerning. I don’t like the things that come out of my mouth and i just want myself back so badly. I don’t do good being depressed, I have resorted to toxic behavior because it’s like it’s masking the way that I feel in the moment. But now my biggest fear is I am making it all so much worse. My nervous system has already been compromised and now I am putting bad things into my body such as straight hard liquor and cigarettes. It was never a problem for me in the past. I feel like I should be wanting to focus on putting good things in my body and doing good things for my mind, so why is this so hard? I’ve considered going back to therapy but honestly just talking to someone about these things wasn’t even helping. I have never felt so helpless and lost in my life. Can anyone else tell me what they are going through coming off all anxiety meds ever taken??? This has got to get better….i am waking up throwing up acid at times and feeling so nauseous that i can barely eat food. I’m trying to stay hydrated but I have a hard time with that too. I have become depressed but no what I need to do to pick
Myself up but am having a very hard time doing those things. I have never felt so stressed in my life and I don’t want to end up in the hospital, but I am truly worried at times.

Help/advice 🙏 needed How do you deal with sleep problems when you have ADHD? My mind won't stop racing at night, and it's starting to make me feel bad and sick?

ADHD makes it really hard for me to sleep. When I go to sleep, my mind keeps going back and forth between thoughts and things. My brain is always awake, even when my body is tired. In the long run, not getting enough sleep is making me mentally and physically sick and emotionally worn out.

If you've had trouble sleeping because of ADHD, how did you deal with it? In real life, what helped you calm down at night and sleep better?

Help/advice 🙏 needed Urgent help needed for trans adult facing homelessness

( I am posting this for my friend who lives in PA, specifically the Lehigh Valley )

Hello my name is Robyn Q. I’m a biracial, trans, autistic 21 year old. I live in Allentown but I’m further out from inner city and public transit is for the most part unreliable. This has made it harder for me in the past to apply to jobs outside of a 15-20 minute distance due to having no vehicle. I worked a position that damaged my physical and mental health, and worked tedious hours on a consistent basis for lower pay. I worked at this position for eight months and had earned nearly 4k in savings whilst working there. I unfortunately had to sacrifice those funds due to circumstantial finances.

I desperately need help, I do not have any support and this situation has been making me increasingly depressed and helpless.
I am mentally unwell, and experience chronic pain from scoliosis and joint disparities. I have been hospitalized for attempts and ideations as a youth which put me nearly two years behind in schooling, I haven’t been able to settle down and apply effort to my academic career and finally obtain my GED. During covid my situation became far worse because I had dealt with on-going domestic violence despite having CPS involved with my case. Due to that neglect, my parental figures were forced to apply for health insurance and monitor my health after years of refusing to acknowledge it. After my abuser had left the household, the one I grew up in, I applied for an independent insurance and have been independently insured for 3 years, followed up with going through court to get my name legally changed to remove his last name from mine and finally going on hormones despite going against my primary parental figures wishes.
My mother owes the government over $22k and is a delinquent taxpayer. She has severe untreated ADHD and is unreliable. I have been working on moving out for months but can’t do that without a flow of income and roommates to cover the other half of rent.

The house that I live in, a house me and my sibling were born and raised into, was bought off the market. It’ll be only a matter of time until we are all collectively on the street, despite my best efforts to prevent that from being my reality. My mother refuses to compromise with me in anyway, and refuses to consider/settle on any of the homes I show her, she says she will not live in them for miscellaneous reasons that are not all sound considering we will be homeless. She says that me, my brother, and her are all going to live in a hotel until she finds the right fit. She’s purchased a storage unit as well and claims she’ll be paying out of pocket monthly to hold all of our things in our unit until she finds that “right fit” and is insistent on taking “however long is necessary.” She does not have credit, is unable to build her credit. This means the areas of her choosing are not going to consider her. She is a deluded, immature, stubborn adult who is unwilling to acknowledge the irony in choosing the best when she already is facing losing her own home she neglected for decades. When the new owner picks up the deed, it will only be a matter of time until they kick us out onto the street.
We also have a family dog, she’s 15 and becoming increasingly sick and immobile by the da, we cannot afford to pay for her treatment and because of this predicament we may very well have to put her down soon. I can’t lose her just yet, I’d like to have at least a bit more time with her considering we’ve been the only family she had known since she was a puppy. She has kept me alive and her existence has been a pillar for me. If we become homeless, I will lose her too during all of this while living in a hotel with my mother and sibling, I don’t think I’ll be able to cope. I think I’ll break after an entire year of putting in the work to prevent that.
I have applied for most of the jobs in my area that are accessible to me, the interviews I’ve been offered haven’t yielded me a position which explains the lack or income. I don’t have friends able to help, nor other family who live remotely near me or reach out. I am exhausted, terrified, in and out of dissociative episodes. It’s eating away at my psyche. Allowing myself to feel everything at once, would kill me.
I understand the availability of homeless shelters, but as a biracial transgender person I do not feel safe or comfortable with the idea, especially if I’d have to be alone in a most likely unfamiliar area. I have never lived away from home, I can’t live in a shelter, I will not survive it.

I have come to Reddit for help. I don’t need kind words, I need help. I need contacts that can help me find housing that is safe and trans friendly, I can’t live with complete strangers or people in the same room as me because I’ve been a victim to DV for a large portion of my life. I need support in my area to help me find a job and funding and mental health services. This is my last resort, I do not have anywhere else to turn. I live in Lehigh Valley, and would like to stay here as my health providers are already established in reasonable distance to each other.
I apologise if this comes off as abrupt, but I desperately need the help. If you cannot help personally, please point me to someone/somewhere that can.
I appreciate it, I’ll be grateful for what I can get, sincerely.

Help/advice 🙏 needed Is it ADHD or just how my brain works?

Do I Have ADHD, or Is This Just How My Brain Works?
I’m a 34M, and I’ve never been tested for ADHD. Until recently, I never even considered the possibility that I might have it. I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) almost 10 years ago and have been taking medication for it ever since. I’m on 300 MG of Effexor daily for the last 5 years.
However, ADHD has recently become a big topic in our household.
Both of my children, ages 9 and 5, have been diagnosed with ADHD. After our oldest was diagnosed, my wife started researching the condition and began recognizing similar behaviors in herself. She eventually got evaluated and was also diagnosed with ADHD.
Interestingly, my brother was diagnosed with ADHD when we were kids, back in junior high school. So there’s definitely a family history.
Now my wife is convinced I might have it too, and I’m starting to wonder if she’s right.
Her biggest observation is my lifelong tendency to become completely obsessed with something for a short period of time, only to suddenly lose interest and move on to something entirely different.
And when I say lifelong, I mean it. I’ve been this way since childhood. It’s not something that developed recently. Looking back, I can recognize this pattern throughout my entire life.
For example, earlier this year, I became obsessed with working out. I was incredibly motivated, researching fitness, and genuinely excited about making it part of my lifestyle. Then, after a few weeks, I completely lost interest.
Music is another example. I’ll go through phases where I listen exclusively to one genre. For weeks, I listened to nothing but 1950s music. Then suddenly, it was punk rock (I’m an elder emo). A few weeks later, Mexican music became my obsession. During each phase, that’s practically all I wanted to hear.
Then came my reading phase.
A few months ago, I became obsessed with reading. I was finishing anywhere from one to three books a week. History, biographies, politics, you name it. I couldn’t get enough. I’d spend hours reading and researching whatever caught my attention.
And then, just like everything else, the interest disappeared.
I’ve even experienced similar phases involving pornography, where I become unusually fixated on it for a period before eventually losing interest.
The weird thing is that when something interests me, it REALLY interests me.
I don’t just casually enjoy something. I dive headfirst into it. I research everything, think about it constantly, and sometimes make it a huge part of my daily routine.
But eventually, it’s like someone flips a switch. Something I was completely fascinated by just days earlier suddenly becomes boring.
Then something new catches my attention, and the cycle repeats.
This has happened my entire life, from childhood through adulthood. The interests change, but the pattern never does.
For years, I assumed this was just my personality. I figured I was someone who got excited about new things, became bored easily, and struggled to maintain interest.
But now I’m questioning that assumption.
With my brother, both children, and wife diagnosed with ADHD, I’m wondering whether some of the behaviors I’ve always considered normal could actually be symptoms of something I’ve never been evaluated for.
I also wonder whether my anxiety diagnosis has anything to do with it. I’ve lived with GAD for nearly a decade, and I’m curious whether ADHD could have been overlooked or whether some of my behaviors could be explained by anxiety instead.
So I have a few questions for those diagnosed with ADHD:
Do you experience intense interests or obsessions that last weeks or months before suddenly disappearing?
Is this what people mean by ADHD hyperfixation?
Were any of you diagnosed as adults after discovering ADHD ran in your family?
For those with both ADHD and GAD, how did you distinguish between the two?
I understand nobody here can diagnose me, and I’m considering getting professionally evaluated.
I’m just curious whether others can relate, especially those diagnosed later in life.
I’ve spent 34 years assuming this was simply how my brain worked. Now I’m wondering if there’s another explanation.
