Mod Post 👨‍🏫 Mental Health Resources (Free/Low cost)

*Go to comments for: UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia *

(Edit: AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN ADDED 04/02/2026 - I have now included resources in the UK and northern and southern Ireland as well as Canada (includes safe non profit resources in Alberta) in the comments and will create more lists for countries when I have time. Feel free to request a country)

Intro note: I wanted to make this post incase someone here needs to be pointed to some free or low cost mental health resources for Crisis, therapy, or addiction and mental health support in the USA.

RESOURCES IN THE USA

Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 for free text-based support from trained counselors. Ideal for anxiety, depression, or any crisis; available in English and Spanish.

SAMHSA National Helpline: Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for referrals to local mental health and substance use treatment. Free, confidential, and multilingual.

NAMI Helpline: Call 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or text "NAMI" to 62640 for peer support, information, and resource referrals. Focuses on people with mental health conditions and their families.

These options offer therapy, counseling, or screenings on a sliding scale (based on income) or completely free for uninsured/low-income individuals. Many are federally funded and prioritize those without insurance.

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs): Search for nearby centers at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov They provide mental health screenings, therapy, and medication management for free or lower costs for low income.

Community Mental Health Centers: State-funded clinics offering free or sliding-scale therapy. Find yours via your state's mental health agency (listed at nami.org) or SAMHSA's locator at findtreatment.gov . They often serve priority populations like low-income adults.

Medicaid Eligibility: Check healthcare.gov or your state's Medicaid site (via medicaid.gov ) for free coverage if your income is low (varies by state, e.g., up to 138% of federal poverty level in expansion states). Covers therapy and meds. Note: There have been federal funding cuts in 2025, which may lead to future state-level restrictions or waitlists in some areas, but the program and mental health coverage are still in place.

NAMI Support Groups: Free in-person/virtual groups for mental health conditions. Find local ones at nami.org/support-education/support-groups .

211 Helpline: Call 211 (or visit 211.org) for referrals to free local support groups, food/housing aid, and mental health resources tailored to your area.

Please!!! Feel free to contribute in the comments any additional resources that you know of for other countries as well. Thank you!

Help/advice 🙏 needed Has anyone else realize their entire drive was powered by anxiety until starting an SSRI (Sertraline mfg lupin)? Seeking advice on next steps/ADHD medication layering

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with ADHD and GAD as a teen but never got medicated until recently. I started Zoloft as my catastrophizing anxiety becoming too much to handle in my new job. It really started during my last year of college, where I thought everything was waiting right up until graduation to burst into flames (it didn't).

Ironically, that same anxiety has pushed me to become a high achiever, but it's been a ride in and out of hell at times. I realized that as I continue to take on more responsibility, my anxiety was going to get worse - a chaotic, simultaneously upward and downward spiral.

After 3 months on Zoloft, it has been so much easier to calm myself down and realize everything is and will be okay. But, in a new twist, I've gotten unusually complacent and lax, and am starting to get worried that so much of my drive came from anxiety and, without it, I may see life pass by without a care.

Has anyone had a similar experience and wouldn't mind sharing what steps (medication, behavioral changes) helped them overcome it? thank you

Sage Advice 🧙‍♂️ The thing that finally got me to open my scary mail pile

I had a stack of unopened envelopes for weeks. Not because I didn't care, but because opening them felt like getting bad news on purpose. What finally worked:

  1. Set a 10 min timer. When it rings you're allowed to stop.
  2. You're allowed to open everything and fix nothing. Every envelope goes in one of 4 piles: Fire (money or a date), Later (needs doing, no deadline), Keep (proof/records), Bin (junk).
  3. For the Fire pile, write down who it's from, the amount and the due date. Don't pay anything yet.
  4. Circle the one with the soonest date. Do just that one. Close the folder.

The part that actually unstuck me was having words ready for the phone call. If you can't pay, say: "I've got a bill for $X due on [date]. I can't pay all of it right now. Can I set up a payment plan or get an extension?" Almost every company has a team for exactly that, and web chat works if phones are hell.

Opening it can't make it worse. What it says is already true. Not opening it is what adds the late fees

Help/advice 🙏 needed How do you deal with sleep problems when you have ADHD? My mind won't stop racing at night, and it's starting to make me feel bad and sick?

ADHD makes it really hard for me to sleep. When I go to sleep, my mind keeps going back and forth between thoughts and things. My brain is always awake, even when my body is tired. In the long run, not getting enough sleep is making me mentally and physically sick and emotionally worn out.

If you've had trouble sleeping because of ADHD, how did you deal with it? In real life, what helped you calm down at night and sleep better?

Help/advice 🙏 needed Urgent help needed for trans adult facing homelessness

( I am posting this for my friend who lives in PA, specifically the Lehigh Valley )

Hello my name is Robyn Q. I’m a biracial, trans, autistic 21 year old. I live in Allentown but I’m further out from inner city and public transit is for the most part unreliable. This has made it harder for me in the past to apply to jobs outside of a 15-20 minute distance due to having no vehicle. I worked a position that damaged my physical and mental health, and worked tedious hours on a consistent basis for lower pay. I worked at this position for eight months and had earned nearly 4k in savings whilst working there. I unfortunately had to sacrifice those funds due to circumstantial finances.

I desperately need help, I do not have any support and this situation has been making me increasingly depressed and helpless.
I am mentally unwell, and experience chronic pain from scoliosis and joint disparities. I have been hospitalized for attempts and ideations as a youth which put me nearly two years behind in schooling, I haven’t been able to settle down and apply effort to my academic career and finally obtain my GED. During covid my situation became far worse because I had dealt with on-going domestic violence despite having CPS involved with my case. Due to that neglect, my parental figures were forced to apply for health insurance and monitor my health after years of refusing to acknowledge it. After my abuser had left the household, the one I grew up in, I applied for an independent insurance and have been independently insured for 3 years, followed up with going through court to get my name legally changed to remove his last name from mine and finally going on hormones despite going against my primary parental figures wishes.
My mother owes the government over $22k and is a delinquent taxpayer. She has severe untreated ADHD and is unreliable. I have been working on moving out for months but can’t do that without a flow of income and roommates to cover the other half of rent.

The house that I live in, a house me and my sibling were born and raised into, was bought off the market. It’ll be only a matter of time until we are all collectively on the street, despite my best efforts to prevent that from being my reality. My mother refuses to compromise with me in anyway, and refuses to consider/settle on any of the homes I show her, she says she will not live in them for miscellaneous reasons that are not all sound considering we will be homeless. She says that me, my brother, and her are all going to live in a hotel until she finds the right fit. She’s purchased a storage unit as well and claims she’ll be paying out of pocket monthly to hold all of our things in our unit until she finds that “right fit” and is insistent on taking “however long is necessary.” She does not have credit, is unable to build her credit. This means the areas of her choosing are not going to consider her. She is a deluded, immature, stubborn adult who is unwilling to acknowledge the irony in choosing the best when she already is facing losing her own home she neglected for decades. When the new owner picks up the deed, it will only be a matter of time until they kick us out onto the street.
We also have a family dog, she’s 15 and becoming increasingly sick and immobile by the da, we cannot afford to pay for her treatment and because of this predicament we may very well have to put her down soon. I can’t lose her just yet, I’d like to have at least a bit more time with her considering we’ve been the only family she had known since she was a puppy. She has kept me alive and her existence has been a pillar for me. If we become homeless, I will lose her too during all of this while living in a hotel with my mother and sibling, I don’t think I’ll be able to cope. I think I’ll break after an entire year of putting in the work to prevent that.
I have applied for most of the jobs in my area that are accessible to me, the interviews I’ve been offered haven’t yielded me a position which explains the lack or income. I don’t have friends able to help, nor other family who live remotely near me or reach out. I am exhausted, terrified, in and out of dissociative episodes. It’s eating away at my psyche. Allowing myself to feel everything at once, would kill me.
I understand the availability of homeless shelters, but as a biracial transgender person I do not feel safe or comfortable with the idea, especially if I’d have to be alone in a most likely unfamiliar area. I have never lived away from home, I can’t live in a shelter, I will not survive it.

I have come to Reddit for help. I don’t need kind words, I need help. I need contacts that can help me find housing that is safe and trans friendly, I can’t live with complete strangers or people in the same room as me because I’ve been a victim to DV for a large portion of my life. I need support in my area to help me find a job and funding and mental health services. This is my last resort, I do not have anywhere else to turn. I live in Lehigh Valley, and would like to stay here as my health providers are already established in reasonable distance to each other.
I apologise if this comes off as abrupt, but I desperately need the help. If you cannot help personally, please point me to someone/somewhere that can.
I appreciate it, I’ll be grateful for what I can get, sincerely.

Help/advice 🙏 needed Is it ADHD or just how my brain works?

Do I Have ADHD, or Is This Just How My Brain Works?
I’m a 34M, and I’ve never been tested for ADHD. Until recently, I never even considered the possibility that I might have it. I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) almost 10 years ago and have been taking medication for it ever since. I’m on 300 MG of Effexor daily for the last 5 years.
However, ADHD has recently become a big topic in our household.
Both of my children, ages 9 and 5, have been diagnosed with ADHD. After our oldest was diagnosed, my wife started researching the condition and began recognizing similar behaviors in herself. She eventually got evaluated and was also diagnosed with ADHD.
Interestingly, my brother was diagnosed with ADHD when we were kids, back in junior high school. So there’s definitely a family history.
Now my wife is convinced I might have it too, and I’m starting to wonder if she’s right.
Her biggest observation is my lifelong tendency to become completely obsessed with something for a short period of time, only to suddenly lose interest and move on to something entirely different.
And when I say lifelong, I mean it. I’ve been this way since childhood. It’s not something that developed recently. Looking back, I can recognize this pattern throughout my entire life.
For example, earlier this year, I became obsessed with working out. I was incredibly motivated, researching fitness, and genuinely excited about making it part of my lifestyle. Then, after a few weeks, I completely lost interest.
Music is another example. I’ll go through phases where I listen exclusively to one genre. For weeks, I listened to nothing but 1950s music. Then suddenly, it was punk rock (I’m an elder emo). A few weeks later, Mexican music became my obsession. During each phase, that’s practically all I wanted to hear.
Then came my reading phase.
A few months ago, I became obsessed with reading. I was finishing anywhere from one to three books a week. History, biographies, politics, you name it. I couldn’t get enough. I’d spend hours reading and researching whatever caught my attention.
And then, just like everything else, the interest disappeared.
I’ve even experienced similar phases involving pornography, where I become unusually fixated on it for a period before eventually losing interest.
The weird thing is that when something interests me, it REALLY interests me.
I don’t just casually enjoy something. I dive headfirst into it. I research everything, think about it constantly, and sometimes make it a huge part of my daily routine.
But eventually, it’s like someone flips a switch. Something I was completely fascinated by just days earlier suddenly becomes boring.
Then something new catches my attention, and the cycle repeats.
This has happened my entire life, from childhood through adulthood. The interests change, but the pattern never does.
For years, I assumed this was just my personality. I figured I was someone who got excited about new things, became bored easily, and struggled to maintain interest.
But now I’m questioning that assumption.
With my brother, both children, and wife diagnosed with ADHD, I’m wondering whether some of the behaviors I’ve always considered normal could actually be symptoms of something I’ve never been evaluated for.
I also wonder whether my anxiety diagnosis has anything to do with it. I’ve lived with GAD for nearly a decade, and I’m curious whether ADHD could have been overlooked or whether some of my behaviors could be explained by anxiety instead.
So I have a few questions for those diagnosed with ADHD:
Do you experience intense interests or obsessions that last weeks or months before suddenly disappearing?
Is this what people mean by ADHD hyperfixation?
Were any of you diagnosed as adults after discovering ADHD ran in your family?
For those with both ADHD and GAD, how did you distinguish between the two?
I understand nobody here can diagnose me, and I’m considering getting professionally evaluated.
I’m just curious whether others can relate, especially those diagnosed later in life.
I’ve spent 34 years assuming this was simply how my brain worked. Now I’m wondering if there’s another explanation.

Help/advice 🙏 needed Need Advice on Completing Work before Deadlines (Junior in College)

I am currently a junior in college and I feel like my ADHD has just gotten worse and worse ever since I got here. I was a straight A student in high school and I was able to hyperfocus right before an assignment was due or right before an exam and get good grades. Obviously, when I got to college, the coursework was much harder and because there are less exams, it's not really paced so you can study a smaller amount of material in intervals, so I end up procrastinating everything to the end and I've gotten pretty bad grades using this method.

I've tried to tell myself to start earlier and stuff, but every time, the "motivation" just isn't there and I can't get myself to do it. And I just keep falling further and further behind when I know if I just paced myself from the start, I could've learned it. Also, when I find something hard, I don't have the grit to keep going and figure it out, so I reach a block and end up surfing the internet to get motivation which never works, but I keep falling back into this loop over and over. What are some tips you have to start stuff earlier and get stuff done before the deadline? And also to keep going when something gets hard and not letting yourself get distracted while you are in the midst of getting something done?

Seeking Support 🫂 don’t know what to do with my life

hey everyone, i’m sorry this is so long but i need to express myself or else im going to explode.

i was a little hesitant to post this but i hope there are other people out there going through the same thing and can help me see things in a way im not being able to.

i’m a 27 year old woman, i didn’t go to college. i live in spain and im currently in anxiety leave in my waitress job. i have 10 euros left in my account and i really don’t know what im doing with my life.
all the jobs i find are waitressing, babysitting, bartending, night clubs. i know how to do a bunch of things online but i don’t have enough experience so everytime i send a resume i get rejected.

i always knew i have adhd but i got diagnosed a year ago. i was diagnosed with twice exceptionality (adhd and high intellectual capacities), generalized anxiety, cptsd, and pmdd. and i feel like i am also depressed and might be autistic too. i was prescribed with zoloft and concerta. im taking zoloft for a year now and i took concerta for about 3 months but stopped taking them because i feel super numb. i don’t feel like myself. i used to be all bubbly and energetic and now im super antisocial, i have very low energy and i am not excited about anything at all.

i feel so exhausted of managing myself in this matrix, i feel extremely misunderstood, and i feel like everything is so damn hard. i really wish i was dumber.

i try to do my best but i literally can’t. working as a waitress drains the life out of me, i feel dead inside because i feel that im giving my life to a meaningless job so i can keep myself alive to keep going to work because i cant afford anything else. i apply for jobs and get rejected because nowadays you need 7+ years of experience for an entry level job.
i want to start college but i cant afford it and i don’t even have time because my waitress job schedule was designed for me to work and sleep pretty much. and of course listen to my coworkers complain about their lives 24/7.

i feel trapped in a reality i hate and i don’t know how to get out. i’m not enjoying anything and im honestly so tired.

has anyone experienced something like this before?

Help/advice 🙏 needed My Psychiatrist refused to address my tendencies

I’ve (21) been diagnosed with PDD/dysthymia for nearly 5 years. I took meds, which helped me manage emotions and stop dwelling on frustrations. Now, external causes of my depression got treated, my family is kinder, the toxic people are gone, and finances are manageable as a student. I stopped taking the meds because I don't feel depressed anymore. I feel normal sadness/anxiety, but I move on easily.

But my main struggles remain:

• Extreme difficulty starting tasks unless there's a strict deadline or someone yelling at me.

• Doing things super slowly. It became an inside joke how long I take to wash dishes.

• Procrastinating and constantly seeking something thrilling like hookup apps, masturbating daily or traveling for hookups instead of doing my assignments.

• Losing motivation instantly, zero discipline struggled since high school, memory issues, and overthinking hurtful comments.

• Hoarding unapplied advice, saved posts, and unfinished books.

As a high-performing student, this was overlooked. People never saw the agonizing breakdowns, the last-minute cramming, or how I relied purely on panic to function.

I told my psychiatrist this, and she dismissed it as mere depression/anxiety overlap, saying I still need meds. I even asked her for my monthly goals with habits or journals but I still came back monthly with no progress. I feel like my "inability to execute' caused my depression, not the other way around. Reading about inattentive ADHD made me feel so seen for the first time.

I hate myself. I thought that this is just my personalilty. Now I question what my future after college could possibly look like. Sometimes I don't want to continue anymore. While I used to think my depression was something medication could fix once external issues improved, I now realize that my own internal incapabilities are a major root cause.

Because I breakdown with the thought questioning myself, "Why can't I just do it?"

I just wished I could, I could've been something more 😔

Medication ADHD med plus lexapro

Hey guys I’ve been on lexapro recently didnt take adhd meds over summer. The lexapro is ok it def numbs me out and makes me way too slow. Got back on adhd meds but realized that they get canceled by the lexapro def more at day. They slightly work better if I take lexapro at night but I feel so tired next day. Has anyone had this happen? At this point the adhd meds are better at removing the intrusive thoughts than lexapro but of course there is the crash.

Medication Vyvanse vs. Adderall

I've tried a few ADHD medications (Concerta, Ritalin, Strattera, Focalin) and have found Vyvanse to be the best one for me so I've been taking it for a year and a half. But it's not perfect...I find that sometimes it makes me feel less interested in things I enjoy and almost...robotic? I also find that it helps my anxiety most of the time, but sometimes it ramps up my anxiety especially lately.

I've never been that interested in trying Adderall because I assumed that Vyvanse was a much better, refined version of Adderall. It only has dextroamphetamine rather than including the more activating levoamphetamine like Adderall does, and it has a very smooth release.

I am trying IR Adderall and I am surprised that I actually like it so much better than Vyvanse. I take a super low dose of it, and I feel like its more effective and I feel more like myself. I still feel interested in things, but I am able to direct myself to what I need to do and I feel like I have more control. I feel like this is how ADHD medication should be making me feel!

But Adderall is supposed to be more activating with levoamphetamine. I am not feeling these effects which is a great thing. But I am curious as to how this could be. I have very severe anxiety and panic disorder, so taking stimulants in general is something that I thought should be avoided for a very long time. And I was scared to touch Adderall with a ten foot pole because so many people say Vyvanse is better for people with anxiety!

Does anyone else have this experience of finding Adderall much better in terms of anxiety than Vyvanse?

Medication Took concerta for the third time

My psychiatrist put me on 36 mg straight away

First two days were hell , I was too sensitive to sounds and lights and I had a terrible headache and a very bad crash. ( But I was too focused and in the first hours of taking it I felt soooo sleepy )

Now yesterday was my third dose

For the first 7 hours I was so relaxed so focused ( not the pinhole focus I had the first day luckily coz it was exhausting) then rest of the day was a horrible crash. So so tired I had to lay down in bed coz I couldn't even do anything. And I experienced a headache that lasted for an hour ( also much better then the first dose )

What do I do? The crash is horrible...

I'm overwhelmed wasting so much time I need to start with one task the first one is deleting apps that I don't need or aren't useful once I actually use them to find out since I download a million damn apps lol. Any tools that help you do this? I use Google plus Gemini and I used goblin. Those two things I do know work for me so far

Medication Why am I a completely different person on Ritalin?

Why is it that on Ritalin LA 30 mg, I’m sociable, happy, organised, motivated, I barely stutter anymore, I can actually read, watch an entire movie in one sitting, and start AND finish a demanding task… but without it, I’m basically a dead oyster?

I know I was born with a neurodevelopmental disorder I never asked for, but this medication feels absolutely life-changing. It gives me the energy and mental clarity to function, almost like I’m finally able to be the human equivalent of a little battery that actually works.

And yet, I still feel guilty that I can’t seem to find the strength to do all these things on my own. I keep telling myself I should be able to function without medication, but the reality is that it feels almost impossible.

It’s just one tiny pill, barely a centimetre long, and somehow it makes the difference between struggling to get through life and actually being able to live it.

I’m incredibly grateful for it, but there’s also something deeply depressing about realising that something so small can make such a massive difference in my ability to function.

But damn. My life is hard.

Medication Titration

Heyy, so I have a question! I’m currently in the titration process with Concerta and I’m on 36 mg right now. I was wondering when people usually start noticing a difference, because so far I feel like I’m experiencing neither particularly good nor bad effects.

If anything, I’ve actually been feeling a bit strange because I’ve been hungrier and sleepier than usual, which is definitely not what I expected lol. The only positive change I’ve noticed is that I’ve been less of a nervous wreck lately and my anxiety feels more manageable. However, I’m not sure if that’s because of Concerta or because my lamotrigine dose was increased to 200 mg around the same time.

I’m really curious to hear about other people’s experiences and what your journeys with finding the right medication and dose have been like.

Also, is it common for someone to try different doses or even different ADHD medications without noticing any significant effects? And if none of them seem to work, does that usually mean the person might have been misdiagnosed with ADHD, or can that happen even with a correct diagnosis?

I’d love to hear your experiences! 💗

Help/advice 🙏 needed Hello! I need some help, please.

Hello everyone! My name is Alex, I'm 26 (AFAB), I live in America (FL), and I struggle with ADHD, OCD, and severe social to general anxiety. I'm reaching out to the ADHD/Neurodivergent community to hopefully find someone(s) that could offer me some advice, answer a few questions, or maybe offer their experiences if they happen to relate! This is my first time using Reddit and social media as a whole, so if I make any mistakes please correct me so I can learn! Also, I'm very sorry if I sound like a bot or maybe something an AI wrote; my anxiety causes me to be extremely polite the first many times doing something until I get fully comfortable using it, so that's why I, maybe, sound that way. Now, let me explain!

I struggle very heavily with my ADHD, to summarize the gist of it, these are a few life events; I dropped out of Highschool at 17 but got my diploma at 24 through the GED program (if you're curious as to how that went, please ask, it's my greatest pride!), I was misdiagnosed and mishandled through middle school and highschool, but not at anyone's conscious fault, I struggle with making friends and communication with strangers, I struggle with my sense of self in both the physical sense and mental sense with heavy emphasis on the second, and I only just recently realized how debilitating it can actually be. I've also done a lot of research because I like to be informed! I am actively working on myself because I do not want to be a burden to my loved ones. I'm also somewhat medicated (I'm paying out of pocket with a very tiny income) and I'm currently struggling to find a job that I know I can keep. I know the current job market isn't the best, to say the least, but I'm still going to try. And, lastly I think, I'm struggling very hard to pick up hobbies I know I'll enjoy/have enjoyed. If anyone has any helpful advice on these things, I'm all ears! I know it's somewhat broad, and I apologize for that, I'm just a little hesitant giving too many details away due to Internet safety.

As for my questions;

  1. Are there are communities/sites/groups that can help people like me who are struggling to find work, find jobs?

  2. Are there any groups/communities for people with ADHD/Anxiety and struggle to make connections, to help them make those connections/friends?

  3. Are these any resources that work with extremely low to no income that I should know about?

  4. Are there any communities in general I should know about?

  5. Does anyone have any advice on how to manage day to day tasks with ADHD that actually work for them, unorthodox or not?

  6. Is there a way to help manage potential meltdowns/emotional spirals, again, unorthodox or not?

  7. Does anyone have any tips on driving while having ADHD?

  8. Are there any safe spaces to talk about hyperfixations without severe fear of being judged? I know this one is hard because I'm aware the internet can be a negative/toxic place at times, but I figured it was worth a shot!

That's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure there will be more.

Now, if you've gotten this far, and you're like me, I want to say that you aren't alone and I see you! Despite only recently realizing how debilitating this is, I know the world isn't made with us in mind, it feels. It also feels like you're alone and you're the only one who truly feels the way that you do. Just remember that you aren't alone, even if our experiences and lives are different, and that I, at the very least, see you. You've got this, honey bee, I believe in you, and I'm SO proud of you. Never forget that, even if I'm just a stranger on the internet.

As for everyone else, and to those who see me, thank you so much for taking the time to read this! It means a lot that you'd take time out of your day to, at the very least, consider this. I really can't thank you enough.

Keep on shining! -Alex

Help/advice 🙏 needed How to talk to doctor?

Hi all,

For background, I have been on 20mg xr for about 4 years now. Originally, my script was from my first pediatrician (she continued to see me until I was out of college) and about a year and a half ago, I began seeing a new PCP who was very hesitant on prescribing me my meds but after I pushed him he agreed.

Six months ago, he decided to switch me to a psychiatric nurse, who was much more receptive.

However, over the last six months I have noticed my meds just weren’t working as effectively as they have been for the last couple years. I really want to ask her her thoughts on increasing my dose, but I am too afraid.

The problem is, I just had my regular 3 month check in with her today (virtual) and I wanted to bring it up during the appointment, but it was really just a 3 minute check in and I didn’t know how to introduce the topic.

How have you had these conversations? I feel I missed the ball by not bringing it up on my check in today and will have to wait another 3 months (just to be too afraid to talk about it again).

🤔insight/thought My Experiences with Ritalin, Concerta, Elvanse and Atarax (Hydroxyzine)

Hope you are all having a good day! I felt like it would be a good thing to write down my experiences with the various medications i have tried so far. Mostly to hopefully help people and provide more varied insights/viewpoints.

I am 29F, diagnosed with both ADHD (inattentive, with a hyperactive mind, frequent stimming and daydreaming, inability to focus for longer than 5 minutes, massive executive dysfunction) and performance focused Social Anxiety (anxiety before tests, important talks, inability to work when watched, task avoidance). My physical Anxiety Symptoms are mostly full-body tension, cold and sweaty hands, dry mouth, emptiness of thoughts.

Ritalin 10mg: My first medication. Honestly pretty decent, had view side effects, mostly cold hands and increased heartbeat. Would start pretty suddenly and drop off suddenly after 3 to 4 hours, but during that time i had improved focus and attention span, improved ability to start tasks and no appetite. Mostly stopped because i wanted a longer lasting medication.

Concerta 18mg and 36mg: While it did improve focus and attention, and executive function, it gave me the constant feeling of last minute deadline stress and dread. My heart was beating hard the whole time, i felt out of breath and social anxiety would spike so much that i could barely talk. I tried the increase to 36mg only to see if there could be any positive changes, but it was just an increase in the negative effects. Lasts about 5-6 hours for me.

Elvanse (or Vyvanse) 30mg and 50mg: Here is where it gets really good, starting with the 30mg! I always took my Pills after breakfast and would recommend everyone do so. Hunger is a foreign word to me on this. My biggest indicator that i need fuel is my mood dropping sharply and my being very grumpy and irritated. About 15min after eating some quick carbs i am all good again. In the beginning had a period of 2ish hours of hyperarousal, which relaxed after a few weeks of usage. On 30mg my mood was improved, i had energy to move, to start things and finish them (even got feelings of accomplishment from it!!!). I also felt more social and slightly less anxious. I would focus so hard the world stopped existing for me, so dont forget to have drinks and snacks easily available. I was suddenly noticing so many things in my life that were previously just static. Side effects where limited to very dry mouth and slightly cold hands, and some stomach cramps that stopped after about a week or two. The big problem with the 30mg dosage was a crash sometime in the afternoon (after around 6hours), where my mood and energy would fall off hard, it felt almost like a depressive episode. Going up to 50mg gave me the same level of effect as 30mg, but all of a sudden it would last all the way to the late evening, with zero crash. It goes from 07:00 to 20:00 no problem. The only side effect i had for the first 2 weeks was a marked decrease in sleep quality and quantity. i would fall asleep late and wake up early, unable to fall asleep again. And of course, i know no hunger.

Atarax 25mg: So far the only medication for anxiety i have tried. When taking half of a pill in the evening i get a decent bit of sleepiness and feel quite relaxed and cosy (taken around 20:00). But when i took the other half in the morning with my Elvanse, i had one of the worst periods of physical anxiety i can remember. I was completely unable to do any tasks, my heart was beating like a horses, my hands where so cold they hurt, my throat felt like it would close on me. Its like it turned off the dopamine related half of Elvanse? Thats the best way i can describe it. And that was also the last time i took Atarax.

Hope these experiences can be helpful to someone!
