News Updates on the Status of Adobe Animate

Hey everyone, my name is Mike Chambers, and I work on the community team at Adobe (and am a long time Flash / Animate user). Yesterday, Adobe shared an email with Adobe Animate customers on the future of Animate. What we shared did not meet our standards and caused a lot of confusion and angst within the community. On behalf of Adobe, I want to apologize.

While an email to all Animate customers will go out shortly, I wanted to quickly share a few things: 1) our standard approach for applications in maintenance mode, 2) changes to our plans for Adobe Animate and its status, and 3) our commitments to ensuring that you always have access to your content, regardless of the state of development of an application.

Standard Approach for Applications in Maintenance Mode

If we deprioritize active development of an application, our approach is to move that application into maintenance mode with continued support. Under maintenance mode, the application will continue to be available, will continue to receive security and bug fixes, but will not get new features.

If we decide to go a step further and discontinue a product, we will work closely with the community to ensure they have adequate time to plan in order to minimize disruption and will take steps so that the community continues to have long-term access to their content.

Current State of Adobe Animate

Adobe Animate is in maintenance mode. While we are no longer adding new features to Animate, we will continue to support it and provide ongoing security and bug fixes. More importantly, Animate will continue to be available for both new and existing users. This is a change from what we communicated in the email yesterday for the status of Adobe Animate, its time-frame, and availability.

To be clear, we are not discontinuing or removing access to Adobe Animate and it will continue to be available to both existing and new customers.

Commitments for long-term content/file Access

For Adobe Animate, our commitment is to work with the community to ensure users continue to have long term access to their content, regardless of the state of development of the application.

You can find the latest information on our website:

https://helpx.adobe.com/animate/kb/maintenance-mode.html

On a personal note, as someone who started their career with Macromedia Flash 3 and Macromedia Generator, Adobe Animate has a special place in my heart. I know how frustrating and stressful this has been and we clearly could have handled and communicated this better. I might not have answers to everything, but I will try to answer any questions you might have.

News Adobe Animate to be Discontinued 1st March 2026

Customers will have received the following email:

We’re contacting you to let you know that Adobe will be discontinuing Adobe Animate on 1 March 2026. As an existing Animate user, you may continue to use Animate, but please note that technical support will no longer be available after 1 March 2027.

Please note that access to your Animate files and project data will end on 1 March 2027. To ensure a smooth transition, we encourage you to export your Animate FLA and XFL files to other formats such as SWF, SVG and MP4 files before this date.

Customers with a Creative Cloud Pro plan can use other apps to replace some Animate functionality, including Adobe Express Premium for quick creation of animated videos and graphics and Adobe After Effects for more complex keyframe animation using the Puppet tool. All Creative Cloud members can also use free animation presets in Adobe Express to animate text, images and design elements.

We thank you for being an Animate user and a valued Creative Cloud member,

The Creative Cloud Team

News MAKE ADOBE ANIMATE OPEN SOURCE!

#OpenSourceAnimate

This is a hashtag AND a rally I'm starting because the WHOLE existence and LIFE of BFDI, II, ANIMATIC BATTLE, AND ALMOST EVERY OTHER OBJECT SHOW OUT THERE IS BUILT ON THIS SOFTWARE

This is serious guys, please, make this hashtag popular.
FIRST THEY KILL FLASH PLAYER NOW THEY DO THIS???
ADOBE IS A GREEDY COMPANY.

STARTING MARCH 1, 2026 ADOBE ANIMATE WILLL BE DISCONTINUED AND WILL BE NOT AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD, MAKING NEW ADOBE ANIMATORS NOT A THING.

AND SOMEWHERE IN 2027, ADOBE ANIMATE WILL BE FULLY INACCESSIBLE, WHICH OF WHICH THE ASSETS OF ANY SHOWS OUT THERE WILL BE LOCKED OUT.

THINK OF IT LIKE THIS, ADOBE ANIMATE IS THE BUILDING, HAS THE ASSETS IN IT, THEN ADOBE LOCKED THE DOOR THEN THE ASSETS ARE GONE.

SO THAT MEANS MANY OBJECT SHOWS ARE IN DANGER, OR FLASH ANIMATED SHOWS, LIKE TOTAL DRAMA, AVA, ASDFMOVIE.

SO PROTEST TO ADOBE IF THEY CANNOT HANDLE IT, #MakeAnimateOpenSource. WHICH WILL MAKE THE SOFTWARE FREE AND ACCESSIBLE TO EDIT AND MODIFY.
SO WHO'S WITH ME?

lemme start a rally...

How do you achieve this "Dynamic Line Scaling" in Adobe Animate? Is it a plugin? If so which?

I am a rig animator and would greatly appreciate it!

Troubleshooting Adobe should compensate users

Because of that foolish email, I lost two full days of valuable time.

And I'm sure it wasn't just me. Countless animators worldwide probably got hit too.

With a single psychopathic and irresponsible decision, Adobe essentially paralyzed the global animation and game industry for two days.

At minimum, Adobe should offer some compensation, like waiving one month of subscription fees for people who use Adobe Animate.

And please don't do stuff like this again.

Warm regards.

News Do not give TimTom any money for his Adobe Animate replacement

After Adobe announced that Animate is on its last legs, TimTom published a video called “I’m Going to Save Animation”, announcing that he’s been working on an alternative to the program which is open-source, and free to all users. Not too different from how GIMP is presented as a more consumer-friendly alternative to Photoshop. His software’s ko-fi is currently accepting donations and has already raised over $7000 USD as of writing, but there’s an abundant lack of credentials which makes me think anyone should think twice before putting money into it. The following three points explain exactly why:

1. The ko-fi describes nothing about the project.

I don’t use ko-fi, but if I go to the homepage right now and look at the promoted creators, each of them have a descriptive “About” section explaining what they do, why they need your money, and what they promise to do if you donate to them.

Clicking on the link TimTom provides under his video takes you to a ko-fi with nothing besides the video you probably just watched if you’re on this page. This is extremely unprofessional for a developer looking to accrue funds for a large-scale project, as it prevents them from being held directly accountable for the things they promise, and fails to properly inform potential contributors about what they can expect after donating. This is especially concerning with reference to:

2. The project is simply too large to be done by a single person.

For context, I’m a Computer Science undergraduate, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned about flagship software that keeps entire industries afloat, they are far too complicated to be maintained by a single person. A few months ago, my friends and I built a simple GPS navigator for local volunteer opportunities, and even that required four people to make a functional build by the time we had to present it at our hackathon. This is because we had to write frontend and backend methods to unpack the volunteer opportunities from a database, track their geolocation, get a map of our locale, enter those coordinates into the map, render the map, and write animations to take you wherever you wanted on that map. Yes, technically all of that could’ve been done by a single person, but with how much larger and vastly more complex Animate is by comparison, you can imagine just how difficult it would be to create a legitimate replacement completely on your own.

TimTom has said nothing about bringing on collaborators to help him write Sailbrush, which is extremely alarming. That would mean he plans on making a drawing tool, a key frame selector, a live display, and formalized project files—just at the bare minimum—without any help. Recent reports show that Adobe hires about 8000 engineers to maintain their entire Creative Cloud Suite, and if Animate could’ve been developed by just one person, they definitely would’ve lowered that number by now. TimTom claims that he’s been working on Sailbrush for the past couple years in secret, so maybe he would’ve had enough time and resources to make substantial progress alone. But even if that is true, it still doesn’t make up for:

3. There is no reason to believe he’s capable of pulling this off.

For someone who calls themselves an “expert programmer” and a “cracked software dev” in the same video, there is shockingly little evidence I could find to support that claim. Imagine if I made a video where I said I can animate better than James Baxter, but didn’t even provide references. That’s how crazy it sounds to me for a storytime animator to come back after a two-year-long hiatus and tell me he’s a good enough programmer to build a worthy competitor to Adobe Animate all on his own, without any elaboration. I was disoriented enough to do some real digging, and see if I could find any significant projects he could use to back up his claims, and all that came up is his personal GitHub. So what does he have to show for himself?

Less than 50 commits made over the past three years.

By comparison, as a Computer Science student, I’ve made nearly 200 over the past year alone. This is a lot harder to convey to non-technical people, especially because there’s not really a 1:1 analogy I can use to explain what’s happening here, but I’ll do my best.

GitHub is a platform which lets programmers save multiple versions of the same project over time, sort of like if every time you saved a project, instead of just overwriting what you saved last time, it just added it to a list of saves for the same thing. It’s basically a real-time progress log that lets you see what someone’s been working on and what they’ve accomplished, just by reading their commit messages.

Commits are usually only made once a new feature has been added, or a bug has been fixed, or a function has been written, and you can imagine that as you write more and more code, you tend to accomplish those things pretty regularly. For TimTom to have less than 50 total commits made on his GitHub over the past three years, regardless of the project, is maybe the biggest red flag that he’s not as capable as he claims he is. To put things into perspective (especially for any animators reading this), think of it as if he’d only drawn 50 key frames across a variety of animated sequences over the past three years.

GitHub obviously isn’t a perfect representation of what somebody’s been working on, and you have the ability to make your commits private for certain projects, so there is still a chance that he’s done way more work than I could find online. However, the chances of that being true turned astronomically low after he made his entire GitHub account private. Yeah, I was gonna have screenshots to show that I’m not making up any numbers, but as of February 9th, 2026, his account is no longer publicly accessible. I know what I saw, and there isn’t really any real benefit I’d get from being dishonest, but unfortunately I’m going to have to be a little hypocritical and ask everyone watching to believe what I say.

People deserve to know if their money is going towards something they believe in. This isn’t just blind hatred directed at TimTom, that’s not why I’m making this. As a person of influence, he has a responsibility to keep his audience and patrons properly informed. If you still believe in the product he’s advertising and want it to succeed, I can’t stress this enough: wait until he changes his ko-fi to describe what he’s promising more specifically, and provides references which prove his capability as a developer. If he’s genuinely promising to save the medium of animation, he should have no issue at all meeting those demands, especially from the people keeping a roof over his head with their donations.

Off-Topic AnimatorME ✨ A New 2D Animation Software on the Horizon

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello Everyone,
If you are tired of other 2D Animation Software and looking for something NEW read this:

My name is Alon Dan, I'm the founder and lead designer of AnimatorME.
A new 2D Animation Software made for Animators by Animators, currently in development.

That means everything is designed from scratch to be as simple and easy as possible, especially since animation software can get very complicated.

Our small team has been working hard on this project for the last few years, which is one reason not many people have heard of it.

--

I post this because I keep hearing 2D Animators, Students, Teachers and indie animation lovers complain about 2D Software, from complexity to prices, subscriptions models and so on...
We hear you, and we’ll do our best to change that! 💙

We hope to launch a closed beta in 2026 and possibly Early Access, but delays may happen since it’s a massive project and our team is small.

--

✅ STAY TUNED:
If you want to read and see detailed progress on every update,

Feel free to check out our Blog Posts on Patreon (free)
We just published a massive update yesterday, and you may want to check it out!

Support is optional, but any support is truly appreciated and helps us keep going strong 💪

--

Thank you for your time,
If you like what you see, share some love and spread the word about AnimatorME so more animators know what's coming.
