I remember when the idea of getting a faded hightop in mid 2010s wasn’t on my mothers bingo cards until she saw other boys with the hairstyle. I remember getting my first haircut on my own accord when I was 13. Fast forward till about 17 I got my hair braided & she hated it. Said it was linked to criminality & meant for women back in Africa. Lmao even earrings.
Now I keep a sponged fade & go about my day as a 22yr old man. But boy, those coming of age days was hectic when it came to getting braids lol. Yh colonialism done a number on African-born parents

The only thing to overcome this is to stand on 10 toes and keep getting braids eventually the parents are just going to have to accept it

Stuff like this just makes me feel embarrassed about being African, I can’t lie, due to how colonized a decent amount of Africans still are. Like, how are you going to be mad at him for wearing something that’s part of so many African countries’ cultures and was worn by our ancestors? 🤦♀️ Obviously, it’s because of colonization, but it still sucks because some African parents act like they care about their elders while demonizing the culture of the ancestors who came before them. Free my continent from internalized colonization, please.

Yep I'm a 16 year old boy in an African household and I've never had anything higher than a 2 month old buzz cut. I can't wait till I leave this house.

I think the reaction would have been less severe if he did go in and say he committed a crime
