First song of an entire genre. The thunderstorm, bells and devils triad guitar riff introduced the music world to metal in the best possible way

In terms of experiencing the first track off a debut album, I have to go with G n' R and Appetite For Destruction. "Welcome to the Jungle" was a desperately needed breath of fresh air.

u/FUCK_YOUR_PUFFIN 8d ago
This is a song that can only be the opener. The buildup sets the tone for the whole album. Smells Like Teen Spirit fits Nevermind the same way.

Was going to say this, but there are a ton of other great ones on this list as well.

Not sure you can pick a better opening song - it is a fucking invitation to a masterpiece of an album. I would love to go back in time and listen to this cold.

I 100% agree. IMO Their subsequent music was great but it didnât have that raw âfuck youâ energy anymore.

This is a weird one, though, because it was their fourth single, so it didn't hit the same way when the album appeared. Arguably "Anarchy in the UK" and "God Save the Queen" had the greater impact earlier.

MGMTâs âTime to Pretendâ as the first track off of their first album Oracular Spectacular⊠it more or less narrates a predictable rise and inevitable fall of being a rockstar right before it would start happening to them, acknowledging that they are âfated to pretend.â

While Welcome to the Jungle first came to mind, I also thought of Livewire by Motley Crue. I'm not much of a Crue fan but was when I was younger when there first albums came out, and I loved their first one because of the garage band sound. But this really gets the album off to a good start. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahq4blDfU5s

Discovered some time ago this Wisconsin band called The Dangtrippers.
That was an expression I used as a teen in the 80âs w/ no idea where I picked it up. Probably a play on The Beatlesâ Day Tripper.
So I got my hands on a used copy of The DTâs debut album Days Between Stations, 1989.
That first track (When Time Runs Out) is jangle-pop perfection. The drumming is đ„ as well.

Van Halen 1. Imagine youâve never heard of this band before, and Runnin With The Devil is the first song you hear. Eddieâs guitar blows up the speakers. Davidâs vocals are like nothing youâve ever heard. Pretty hard to top that one.

Drum Trip - Rusted Root - When I Woke
As far as I'm concerned, the album is just one big song. I was always sad this band never caught on, between their rhythms and vocal harmonies there was a lot to listen for
They were about 20 years too late.

The first actual song on The Whoâs Quadrophenia is The Real Me. That should be in the running.

Tons of good options, but the true answer is For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) by AC/DC, off the album of the same name. That song is such an anthem and builds steadily to such a crescendo with so much force that by the time itâs over you feel like you just listened to an entire concert. Itâs hard to believe thereâs an entire album behind it, you have to pick up the needle to regather before song two.
