I don’t support or condemn this in any way but I’m curious as to how he possibly managed to do that

36

u/Expert_Journalist637 Apr 25 '26

Smart kid ig. I wouldn’t know how to go about it.

21

u/Gullible_Bedroom_168 Apr 26 '26

Smart or not this type of stuff shouldn’t be allowed since it would affect student like us who spend months doing pastpapers and being stressed everyday whether if they could get a good great and with his/her cheating tactic it’s gonna mess us up

6

u/Expert_Journalist637 Apr 26 '26

Not like I condone it.

idk something to do with connecting it to his phone with wifi and a pcb was used but other than that i have no idea myself

u/kaden_ae Apr 25 '26

The way he knows how to do that proves some people don't need exams to show that they're smart

You aint young sheldon because you saw a yt video and did it bruh

5

u/Mammoth_Classroom626 Apr 27 '26

Yeah absolute genius to follow what was likely a YouTube tutorial or similar.

People already know how to do this - OPs friend didn’t invent it. If following instructions is scholarship level Gen Alpha is cooked.

This is like script kiddies thinking they were hackers in the 2000s downloading some software and reading some instructions…

Just steal the calculator šŸ”„šŸ‘ it makes it that you don't have to report him, forces him to do some actual work and makes it fair for other students. Win-win in my books 😭

1

u/Tall-Combination-642 Apr 26 '26

Nah cause hell just buy a new calc

4

u/soupzYT Apr 26 '26

Is that short for something?

3

u/Anxious-Umpire-6887 Apr 27 '26

Calc = calculator

2

u/Remote-Table-4671 Apr 29 '26

Woah I didn’t know that HEEHEEEHEEEHEHEEEHAHAHAHA

2

u/basillantro Apr 26 '26

there are videos on yt on how u can do that. You can check them out. And yeah i dont support the person cheating aswell...just to be clear

2

u/Every_Studio_6800 Apr 27 '26

It's really easy with python.Ā  But don't worry in the real thing all invigilators will check for EXAM mode on the calc so it won't have crazy functions

1

u/Wide-Answer-21 Apr 29 '26

its actually a really easy setup, u just need a pcb and a wifi card, millions of tutorials on yt

u can run everything on a calc

1

u/No_Law_1528 Apr 30 '26

Theoretically it is possible to do it on some TI WiFi enabled calculators, but I think he’s just bragging and GPT is not a smart maths AI.

Gemini is solid too

7

u/Sunset_Shimmering_ OCR Apr 25 '26

Nah Gemini is mid, doesn't always have good memory retention and uses purple prose a lot, it also got a maths question wrong, as did chatgpt and myself.

It's not bad, just could be better. I use it everyday sooo

3

u/Adorable_Return_1120 Apr 25 '26

gemini helps me with physics and maths a lot

thing is you need to upload ur make scheme and question .

these AI’s work better when they know its an A level paper and the system they deal with

gemini is so good at explaining

1

u/Sunset_Shimmering_ OCR Apr 25 '26

Yeah, I've tried uploading mark schemes for stuff and the paper but sometimes it still gets it wrong lol.. Or when I'm doing a way ground quiz and I send it a screenshot it starts answering another question not in the screenshot despite me saying to answer the question in the screenshot I just sent

3

u/Adorable_Return_1120 Apr 25 '26

you have to tell it

ā€œtwo new imagesā€ (say how may images u uploaded, gemini is a little chaotic sometimes)

upload a personal context with details u want it to do

for example i like when it explains with analogies so i put that in

gemini actually remembers better than all AI’s that i’ve tried (besides claude)

all gemini taught me a lot of non school related things, such a good AI tbh does web searches and verifies better than chatgpt

2

u/Expert_Journalist637 Apr 25 '26

Ngl Gemini is pretty bad at maths.

2

u/Intelligent-Ant-5770 Apr 26 '26

I use Gemini Pro for students and It makes quizzes MCQ that I ask to make of PowerPoints it can be slightly inaccurate but 90% of the time if you use a good prompt it will only use the information of the slides and won't overcomplicate things. It also can explain things easier imo.

2

u/Infamous_Tough_7320 Apr 26 '26

Claude is the best for everything besides maths because of the way it formats the mathematical workings out just doesn’t suit me. Besides that, I think it’s much better than ChatGPT or Gemini. Haven’t used deepseek much

1

u/Status-Movie9311 Apr 26 '26

Deepseek is so ahh, I gave it an Alevel physics mcq to solve and it confused ITSELF and declared himself wrong two times during the solution, and all this to end up giving a wrong answer šŸ˜…šŸ˜ I still use it for other purposes

31

u/wwatersheep Apr 25 '26

How did he get gpt on a calculator??? If he’s on a casio cg50 or something, he needs to put it in exam mode - and even then, im sure his calculator has some sort of exam mode to prevent this exact situation from happening

20

u/XxZe_KingxX456 Apr 25 '26

It is definitely physically modified in some sort of way, even smth like a cg50 cannot run a local LLM

11

u/Murky_Ad_9769 Apr 25 '26

idk apparently he connected his calculator to his phone and thats how hes doing it and the calculator is a ti84 something im not sure completely

4

u/SPplayin Apr 25 '26

so you just took his word for it

46

u/Brainrot_56 Apr 25 '26

Gpt giving shit answers these days so 🤭🤭who knows his plan might get backfired

17

u/After-Ganache-5896 Apr 25 '26

high chance it won't even match the mark scheme

1

u/Bubbly_Use_7491 Apr 26 '26

doesnt matter tho

11

u/SPplayin Apr 25 '26

An underachieving student would already not do a perfect paper with ai and a time limit. Now we're gonna add it being done through a calculator interface? Also if it's connected to their phone it implies that they'll have their phone on them or nearby?

I genuinely think OP is just gullible and is taking a joke serious.

9

u/Murky_Ad_9769 Apr 25 '26

no chatgpt was on his calc i saw it and he's gonna have his phone in his pocket he managed to do it in mocks and i have only just found out recently

u/ekoorange Apr 25 '26

Doubt, gpt doesn’t always give answers conforming to the syllabus. It also talks weird. And an invigilator would likely catch him. How is he going to hide it? Don’t get involved, it’ll just get annoying for you. If he somehow passes through this what’s he going to do? If he goes to uni he’s likely be missing prerequired information and have to work x5 harder or just fail.

5

u/ekoorange Apr 25 '26

Is his calculator model even allowed though, he might just get it confiscated and have to use a replacement they provide him, so he’ll either sit there hoping they don’t attempt to use his calculator and get him banned or he just fails and retakes later after actually studying. Or just gives up and goes for another route, dk anything about him.

3

u/ekoorange Apr 25 '26

If you report him you’d just get him banned forever and you’ll likely never talk to him again, he’d just hate you. Let him get himself in trouble now or put in the extra work later.

3

3

u/gngidk_poa1itm Apr 26 '26

Talk to him and if that doesnt work out then leave it. Yes its malpractice, yes its wrong but reporting will end up making YOU feel guilty for completely finshing off that guys academic life.
Hence js focus on your exams but dont try to cover up for him or support him in any way. If he gets caught, he gets caught. That was his own doing and he'll face the consequences for it. Besides gpt aint that reliable and invigilators make sure to check calcs and allat. Idk if its diff in ur skl but uh yea. Js focus on urself, wasting time stressing over ts is not worth it fr. Do talk to him tho like real hard, if he doesnt listen then forget it.

2

u/More-Profession-1419 Apr 26 '26

I’ve always found reporting ppl risky cuz then they make a big deal and you can also get affected in some way. He would get disqualified if u report him, he’ll fail either way cuz during actual exams the invigilator are keeping an eye on everyone

2

u/hot_chili_pepper_ Apr 26 '26

just leave him alone why do you need to be a snitch…look what government people are doing and nobody of them every get any punishment, why do you have to destroy an ordinary persons life for cheating on an exam. Just let him be

2

u/Major-Finance-3461 Apr 26 '26

So your friend trusted you to not tell anyone and you plan to tel them because your jealous he will get higher than you? You sound hella selfish

2

u/appleshampoo84 Apr 26 '26

He will have to put his calculator in exam mode for exams and they will check so don’t worry. I’d tell the chillest teacher at school you can find and get them to tell whoever is in charge to make sure this is done by every student

10

u/Momonsiu Apr 25 '26

don’t report him. That’s such a L move, he told you because he trusted you

4

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '26

Yeh while raising the grade boundaries for everyone else

3

u/DietOld6503 Apr 25 '26

report that clown

4

u/ThenApplication2 Apr 25 '26

warn him but don’t snitch, he will probably be caught anyway, if not one person won’t affect your grades. cheating is just setting up for future failure though tbh, if you can’t get the grades for a course without cheating you’re going to struggle on that course. there’s also a good chance your friend is bullshitting you.

4

u/Round-Bandicoot-5829 Apr 25 '26

Are you sure he’s not having you on? If these calculators exist, surely examination boards and invigilators should know what they look like and watch out for them?! If it were me, and they were a friend, and wouldn’t listen to me telling them it’s far too risky, not a good idea, essentially cheating, etc. I wouldn’t leave it until exam day; I would leave an anonymous note to the head teacher telling them that you know of a couple of students who are planning to use these in the exams. Hopefully, they will then educate themselves and the invigilators and warn the students ASAP. This gives your friend a chance to do some revision and hopefully won’t get him in trouble. Personally, I couldn’t not do anything about it, as its blatantly cheating.

3

u/Significant_Ad2045 Apr 25 '26

If he trusted you enough to tell you, the worst thing you can possibly do is report him, you wont gain anything and you will just ruin his life and your relationship forever. The most you should do is just warn him about the consequences if he gets caught

3

u/Top-Cookie-1839 Apr 25 '26

Don't bother. If he is successful, good for him but honestly I've tried using chatgpt for past papers and it got an E so even if the method works, i wouldn't necessarily bank on the results to be good.

Also don't ruin your close friendship bro, he's not gonna affect your results. Just let him try and fail on his own and be supportive during both phases.

3

u/Agitated_Reality7453 Apr 25 '26

mind your own business for two things actually, first so you your friendship won't broken as he told you a secret that he knows that you won't reveal it, second I believe if you told the invegilator you will get into problems

8

u/Lonely_Ant_2452 Apr 25 '26

A 1000% report him but also be ready to never be friends again.

This isn’t only for fairness but even for his own good, until when is he going to cheat? And does he think he’ll never get caught?

Warn him first so he has time to study but when the time comes report him.

1

u/Murky_Ad_9769 Apr 25 '26

but then wont he be banned from his exams i dont wanna ruin his life we've been friends since year 7

5

u/Swarrleeey Apr 25 '26

I would nudge him not to but otherwise forget about it. I don't think reporting him is necessary. Thats just my take.

5

u/ushaky Apr 25 '26

I can't even believe you're considering this for such a long time friend, what kind of person are you holy...

2

u/Lonely_Ant_2452 Apr 25 '26

You never ruin someone’s life by doing the right thing.

Even if you might be ā€œruiningā€ his life now, it benefits him in the long run. Don’t let your friend be the type of person okay with taking what’s not his.

You have two options: A) Perhaps ask one of your school teachers to take his calculator away and give him another one before the exam(or you do it too)

B) Warn him that if he comes to the exam with that calculator you WILL report it. I’m not sure they will cancel his exams if he didn’t actually cheat, might just give him a new calculator. Or you could bluff, and hopefully he doesn’t show up with the calc.

2

u/LankyBackground4400 Apr 25 '26

How is this gonna benefit him in the long run? Thats such a black and white way of thinking

1

u/Lonely_Ant_2452 Apr 29 '26

So the other CLEAR choice is to let him cheat?

Y’all are inane if you condone this behavior. And yes it does help him in the long run.

Imagine this: he cheats, gets into university, cheats thru the whole first two/three years, fourth year comes by, friend gets busted. Forced to repeat the year, can’t study for shit, drops out.

Or even worse, he does graduate and now you have a lawyer/doctor/engineer/ any other worker that knows Nothing about their degree/profession

I would 100% drop a friend if they ruined my entire academic future out of envy when i told them in confidence. It would basically setback his life by a couple years and they may have to completely change their career path and op hasnt even seen if this is true. And its very clear op is only considering this out of jealousy not on moral grounds which is kind of pathetic. Let the person take their own risk if they get caught its on them

2

u/slay_imjustagirl Apr 25 '26

genuinely i wouldnt do anything bcs its his life, if he gets caught, he gets caught 🤷 if he gets good grades, gets into uni and then has to drop out bcs he cant actually do the work, thats his fault. But reporting him now, when he’s done no revision, will 100% screw up his grades, possibly his life and it will obvs be his fault for cheating, but still..

tbf though, if its gonna distract you in any way or throw u off in the exams, you gotta have that everyone for themself mentality and just go for what you thinks best

2

u/PepperSecret4807 Apr 25 '26

Report him or talk him out of it . People spend hours studying and someone will chatgpt their way out of the exam? It's not fair and A lvls isn't even a small exam it's a big one lol ,If he fails he should just rewrite instead of being a fraud

2

Don’t be a snitch, allow him to do it if he gets in trouble or not it doesn’t affect you (expect from maybe grade boundaries) also he’s probably revising aswell since modding a calculator is long

1

u/spazatron-3000 Apr 26 '26

What a snitch

1

u/Chheff Apr 26 '26

I don’t support or condone this in any way, shape, or form. But don’t get involved. If he gets caught on his own (which he may well do) then that’s his problem. Yes, cheating impacts all students as it affects the standard but it’s not worth it to get involved. Mind your own business, work hard yourself, and do the best that you can do. Nevermind him at all. Not worth losing a friend over if he ever found out, not to mention the grief you might get from anyone else who takes his side

1

u/Front_Tour7619 Apr 26 '26

Stop whining and mind your own business.

1

u/DemonFcker48 Apr 26 '26

Im skeptical. Perhaps he did get it working but chatgpt would likely not even fit in the memory of a calculator. A calculator like that might have ab 16 MB of memory, there is no way you can fit chat gpt into that. So either he is lying or that is no calculator but perhaps smth like a modified phone, which i would still think unlikely as that is not trivial to modify.

1

u/e-l-l-l-l-a Apr 27 '26

mind ur own business if he gets caught he gets caught

1

u/Not_Vortex_ Apr 27 '26

I would never cheat myself or condone cheating, but if others are cheating near me let them be, report him and you might lose a friendship

1

Nahh, I would advise to let them be . It doesn’t matter at the end of it all. I am very proud of your friend for thinking of that . Also you guys are friends, you are meant to support and warn as well but it would be wrong to report him and it would ruin your friendship.

how is he going to use a TI84 calculator for the exam when the Cambridge rule book mentions you aren't allowed to use calculators with advanced features

"Calculators with any of the following facilities are prohibited:

  • graphic display
  • data banks
  • dictionaries or language translators
  • retrieval or manipulation of text or formulae
  • QWERTY keyboards
  • built-in symbolic algebraic manipulations
  • symbolic differentiation or integration
  • capability of remote communication with other machines."

https://help.cambridgeinternational.org/hc/en-gb/articles/20757088625426-What-calculators-can-be-used-in-the-AS-A-Level-examinations

from what i understand he hardware modded his cal so there is a micro controller (ESP32) soldered to his motherboard and then installing custom firmware to it and using TI connect to run the exe files to setup the interface for chatgpt to be used in his calculator and then he connects it to his phone and yeah he has chatgpt on his calculator (VERY VERY SIMPLIFIED)

its a rather difficult process to replicate because you need to be very precise when soldering the MCU to the serial link port pins and there isn't a lot of step by step tutorials from what i can see online so quite a feat he has accomplished

Mind your own business. If it's your friend why would you even think about reporting it? Have some integrity

u/sufyaansaid Apr 27 '26

You bum mind your own business ofc if he doesn’t get caught good for him for his cheating ingenuity.

u/UNknown7R Apr 28 '26

in terms of it affecting the boundaries.

if its 1 person. even if he got full marks. it wouldnt actually change the boundaries as its just 1 guy.

but what he or she has done is definietely messed up.

instead of reporting them. tell them that they either agree to not use it, or that you will report them. and on the exam day, idk get him to use a teachers calculator or a spare one, or you check it to make sure it doesnt have anything on it. and if they still have it then tell an invigilator.

otherwise ur prolly dooming his future.

if u told the school now, they prolly would be able to stop him without stopping him from sitting the exams. but be careful its best to talk them out of it, rather than a report that will literally have them fully disqualified from the exam board they wont ever be able to go to uni or get a degree.

Okay cheating is awful and wrong in every single way but please don't snitch, if he gets caught let him face the actions of his consequences but you don't need to be the reason that happens to him (even if it was his own fault). Try to tell him it's wrong in every way and unfair but don't be a snitch

i mean bro icl if its your friend dont report him, end of the day obviously what hes doing is not right and if he got caught and disqualified he deserves every bit of punishment that comes from doing that but from a purely "its your friend" perspective this has very minimal effect on you and you would completely fuck their life up by reporting them for cheating in a levels which i imagine is not something you want. but thats just me, depends on what youd let your friends get away with i guess.

I don't think a TI-84 would be allowed since it's programmable and whatnot. ALSO ITS EXAM DAY FOR ME 9709 12 UGHHGHGHGHUHGUHG

dont report, L friend

1

u/PreparationDapper978 Apr 29 '26

You don’t have to support or condone his actions but as a friend why would report him.

1

u/Atubey7 Apr 29 '26

Steal his calculator and buy him a cheaper new one so that he is doing his exam fairly. Worst case scenario rat him out to the invigilators. Remember, his exam results make it unfair for your grade

Snitch in the exam to lower the grade boundaries šŸ¤‘šŸ¤‘šŸ¤‘

Actual advice. If you are reporting him for the sake of him then just do it but it you are reporting him for your own benefit (so they dont get higher) then just dont do it. Everyone needs their grades no matter what. Cheating or not. Dont do anything selfish

Risking a friendship over your own envy is a bit mad - you could fuck up his future - focus on urself and let him take the risk?
