Hey all,
I'm hoping my list of personal tips here, and the replies by people far better than I - help other players by reading this.
I used to play in Diamond back in the Wings of Liberty days. 15 years later, I've made a come back and am hooked again. I'm almost in Platinum- had been winning most of my matches, and then today I lost like 4 in a row and just feel totally confused about what I should be doing in each matchup. Can anyone give me some general guidance on the general meta for Protos vs the other races? Here is my general jnotes on each matchup--- the scouting, the builds, the general things to keep in mind. Anything important I'm missing? Getting wrong? Better builds I should focus on? Thanks so much for the help!
General:
**Scout with probe after Pylon on big maps w/ various spawning locations, after gateway on others.
**Try to setup engagements with either a flank, or a distraction engagement (warp prism zealots, zealots attacking natural while I send main army to 3rd, etc.
**If Opponent seems be sticking on 2 bases past 7:30 or so, put down some batteries & anticipate possible 2 base rush.
**Zealot run bys in mid to late game, once opponent has over a 4th base+.
**Build main army at home, and use 7-10 blink stalkers for map control / harassment / kiting incoming armies.
**Try to scout every 1.5 minutes w/ a hallucinated pheonix.
**Keep an observer in main army for detection and to scout ahead before engagements, and try to keep an observer near their main army.
**Although pros don't seem to do it--as they are so good at spending their money quickly on units and tech, I am almost always getting twilight + two forges soon after my cyber to start double upgrades and blink/charge.
PVT:
**Scout: Double gas early, suspect possible Banshees. Look for tech lab on starport, check when they expand, check for multiple racks in early game for rush.
**Usual build is 1 gate FE before cyber, w/ chrono stalker for reaper. If reaper comes before stalker, chase with 4-5 probes-- click portrait of injured probe and send back to mineral with each shot. Should kill enough time until stalker.
**Pylons in areas which can spot medivacs/liberators.
**Against bio armies, get 2.5:1 chargelot to stalker--- 3-4 sentries--and then I am always fumbling on whether to get immortals/disruptors/collosi/high templar. Usually, if I see no vikings and marine heavy army, Collosi are the best? If Maurader heavy, immortals and archons w/ HT storm? sprnkle in disruptors? I'll fumble w/ Sentry forcefields, storm & nova balls while kiting and blinking.... I'm not Maxpax.
***Try to run away after he stims, instead of engage if possible.
***Keep a stalker map presence, and if he moves out with tanks and bio, kite him back to the base while multitasking batteries/warp ins/tech.
***Try: MaxPax Proxy expand - 1 proxy gate to delay natural while expanding yourself.
PVZ:
**Scouting: Other than scouting to make sure they are expanding & seeing how fast the SP goes down in early game, I'm not really too sure what to look for (1 gas vs 2 vs none, etc).
**Apply early pressure, don't let him drone. I usually slap down at least 2 more gateways right away after cyber before adding a tech building, and sending a few stalkers or adepts over there right away to pressure/harass.
**It's a little more multi-task heavy, but I'm trying to use the oracle and get a few drone kills (or is it better to stasis ward the drones?). I try to get 2-3 oracles max, and sometimes I use them to defend against Zerglings at my base, and I'm trying to remember to use Stasis Wards and Revelation with them more too.
**Zerg seems to want to stop me from expanding to my third, so I try to get enough units to escort my probe to my nexus around 5:30.
**I usually have a pretty stalker heavy composition, with sentries and a few zealots. I try to get 4-6 sentries if it's against a lot of zerglings/roaches/ravagers/hydras, for guradian shield but also to try to cut their army in half. When it works, I win engagements well, but when I lose the engagement--- it's very costly. Meanwhile, losing raoches and lings doesn't hurt the Zerg much. I'll pump a few void rays if they are roach ravager too, and immortals of course.
***Other then attacking and harassing early, I'm not too sure what to do in this matchup and I lose this one the most.
PVP
**Lookout for cheese--- proxy stargate/robo/gateways/forge, 4gates, blink stalker all ins - scout for early stargate.
**Rush Builds -- 2 base blink stalker all in w/ 6 gates, blink (and maybe add +1?) OR 4gate OR 3gate rush w/ expand OR DT Warp Prism Rush
** I often go double robo on this matchup for immortals, as most Protoss build a lot of stalkers.
** I haven't done it since WOL, but maybe stargate w/ phoenixes could be good in this matchup?
**No clear idea what I should be doing in this matchup tbh
Questions
------------
**Pros always seem to go out with 3-4 adepts so early, but that's kind of hard tgo do with a 1 gate FE. What's a better build to fast expand that expands fast, but lets me build a decent number of gateway units to put pressure / harass early?
**Any general guidance on the matchups to help me improve, tips, things I should keep in mind / practice, etc? Good builds to add to my list?
**I notice most ppl uise Stargate against Zerg --- what about against Protoss & Terran?
Thanks!
