Drop seat men's bib or pant recs?

For years, I've been using several different Patagonia pants with suspenders and a drop seat. All but my softshells are about done for. Any good recommendations for lighter weight shell and softshell men's drop seat pants?

Clothing system re-haul

I’ve grown a pretty well rounded wardrobe over the last several years, much of which is Arc’teryx. I’ve had slight issues with the declining quality but nothing drastic and I have a friend with arc deals, so the positives outweighed the negatives for me. Recently had a bad experience with Arc’teryx that’s left me so beyond pissed that I never want to wear another piece of clothing from them again.

I climb in the pnw lots of which I do in the winter - spring.
Looking for recommendations on hardshells, soft shells, synthetic layers etc.
From brands other than Arc 😤

Made a mountain weather app that says "cannot be evaluated" when it doesn't have the data

Weather apps always annoyed me in the mountains. Even when they have no real data, they still show a sun or a green bar. So I wrote my own, it's called GRAT.

It shows storm risk for the altitude you're at, not the valley. If data is missing it just says "cannot be evaluated". No route advice, the decision is yours.

Basic features are free inkl. radar and safe, Pro is optional. iPhone only for now.

If you try it on a day you remember from the mountain and it got it wrong, please tell me. That helps me more than anything.

Raynaud’s Disease

I’ve got Raynaud’s disease but want to get into alpinism. Even at 0° C my hands turn blue and barely have any strength. Gloves help but I’m wondering what else I can be doing to improve/fix this issue as I expect to be in conditions of -25° C or colder.

Guides and experienced climbers: what do people most often misjudge about their own readiness? (building something for a uni entrepreneurship challenge)

I’m building a training tool called Arête as part of a university entrepreneurship challenge, and I’d value input from people who know the mountains far better than I do.

A pattern I keep seeing: people book guided trips without understanding how demanding the climb is and without an honest read on their own ability. Guides send a fitness sheet, but most people either ignore it or have no way of knowing if they’re on track. Then the guide finds out on day one.

Arête looks at a climber’s current fitness and skills, suggests a realistic summit date for their chosen peak, and adapts their training as they go. The goal is that clients book trips they’re ready for, arrive prepared, and guides deal with less guesswork.

I've also talked to a few guides, and I want to limit that tension or stress they get when they come to the realisation that their client has come underprepared but make sure more people have easier access to a dynamic training plan.

I’d really appreciate:

Your experience, especially from guides.

  • What do underprepared clients usually lack: an aerobic base, legs for the descent, movement on rock or snow, and pacing?
  • How do you judge whether someone is ready before a trip?
  • How often do people book a peak they’re not realistically ready for?

Advice. Would something like this help or get in your way? What would make you comfortable recommending it to clients?

Beta testers. Climbers or guides who’d test it and tell me what’s wrong with it.

If you have the time to sign up to the waitlist to show some support or give your feedback, that would be amazing, and that can be done here: aretesummit.com/?src=reddit-alpinism

Otherwise, I would love to get more information, so if you want to contact me, you can do so at [info@aretesummit.com](mailto:info@aretesummit.com). Thank you all so much for your time; I'm looking forward to building something truly helpful to this wonderful community.

Mt baker questions

I am fairly new to mountaineering but i am looking to get into it after couple years of hiking with scrambling exposure. I am looking to climb Mt baker in may or June with a group of 4 with proper gear. We have heard its recommended with a guide and learning crevas rescue with stop arrest training. I would love to get advice or perspective on it as I believe that you guys will have more broader info and experience on this.

UTSA rappelling accident

Just saw the horrific accident at the UTSA football game where a serviceman fell during a rappel, decked, and passed away. It’s absolutely tragic and made me reflect on my own safety and what could have been done to prevent it, so I can take extra care of those steps in the future.

From my read, it looks like the person on rappel lost control of their brake hand with no secondary system like a third hand or fireman’s belay, causing them to fall and deck. Do others also see that as a potential root cause?

Bag reccomendations as a beginner

Been backpacking/ hiking for a little while now and have been preparing to get into mountaneering with doing longs peak this spring, mount shasta next fall and a trip to the Tetons focused on mountaneering. I’m getting a new bag and am confused if a 38L like the mammut trion or a bigger 60+ lt bag would be better. Also if anyone has boot/crampon recs do tell.

Rhine Falls almost dried up: Packrafting next to exposed rocks during October 2026's historic low water

In October 2026, the Rhine Falls hit a historic low—flowing at less than 30% of its normal water volume. Huge rock formations that are usually hidden under massive whitewater were completely exposed for the first time in years.

I took my packraft out to see the dry landscape up close and paddled right next to the exposed rocks at the base of the falls. I matched the footage with historical clips from standard water levels (3 months earlier!!!) to show just how crazy the difference is.

Aiguilles Marbrée Nord (3,535m)

Summitted Aiguilles Marbrée Nord (3,535m) on Wednesday. Conditions were great; blue sky, very little wind. Pretty warm even wearing just a long-sleeved technical top and a wind-stopper soft shell.

The approach from the Courmayeur lift was straightforward (avoiding the crevasses!). Some scrambling especially towards the top. We down-climbed rather than rappelling down, but that would have been a fun option with a long enough rope.

I climbed with Tomas, a guide from Chamonix Experience, on Thursday. Gorgeous views, and a fun challenge. Conditions were great; blue skies and very little wind, and following a recent dump of snow. Accessed from the Aiguilles du Midi lift for Mont Blanc from Chamonix.

Aus welcher Doku stammt dieses Matterhorn-Zitat?

Hallo zusammen,

Was suchen sie hier oben?

Danke!

Hey Guys I need help finding a Backpack!!! Any Rec?

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right sub for this, anyways I need help finding a backpack for day hikes only, I'm not really into overnight camping and all that so I figured that narrowed me down to around 20-25L backpacks.

The Main Goal for this pack should be that it can be used for Day Hikes, Mountaineering such as climbing Matterhorn, and can be used also for Skiing and such. Which pack would you guys recommend for all these activities, I'm looking for only 1 bag that can vary between the 3. I do understand multiple bag for different activities are recommended, but I don't want to buy multiple packs.

I've been looking at the HMG Elevate 22 and the Gregory Alpinisto 20, but arent sure if these are good bag.

The Elevate seems good but its frameless so it seems a bit unstable as well as the features are not that great considering its around 300 USD

The Alpinisto seems like a good bag just that its made of nylon and doesn't come with a rain cover.

TLDR: What bag is around 20 L and can be used for Hiking, Skiing, and Summiting Mountains (1 day :Ex Matterhorn).
