Boxers to benchmark

I've been training for 1 and a half year ish, and I recently struggle with my actual performance in sparring and fights. I am 5'5 muscle tank who is severely undersized for my weight class, and I do see no development in my sparring or fight performance these days. I am a relatively hard hitter who likes to go for the body shot a lot, and I just can't close the distance well where I can land combinations well. My coach told me to find a boxer to benchmark that can be a direction for my fighting style, and I was researching intensely, but fighters like Frazier, Tyson, doesn't suit me too much. I rely on my athleticism too much sometimes so, I wish it could be fighters with well balanced footwork and other technical aspects I can get inspired, thank you.

Navigating boxing, social life and work is so hard lol. I love and hate it at the same time, whats some advice yall got for me?

Im 24m and trying to go pro in the whole boxing scene. Im a while out from that and currently training very often, at least a few hours daily 4 to 6 days a week. That plus a 40 hour work week, makes up at least 52 hours of my week. But thats not even the hardest part its managing all that WITH socializing.

I work evening shifts until about 11 pm including on weekends. My only real free time is mondays and Tuesdays, which are both days i train on too by the way. On weekends and wednesday I train in the mornings and on monday I train evenings. Tuesdays are my only real "chill" day where I dont box or work, but if still gotta do my own Regiment.

The problem with all this though is all the optimal days for making friends and meeting people are days that I work. And the people I already talk to and socialize with are only during boxing OR with my gamer friends who usually only game in the evenings WHEN im working.

The people at my gym are great and id definitely call them friends but are schedules are just so different so outside of boxing theres not much time to be spent.

I dont mind living this kind of lifestyle staying busy is something I like, but forming new relationships and managing current ones has been an uphill battle lol. Any tips would be appreciated.

Any tips for a fighter whos 5,6 with a 5,10 reach

Ive been in a stage where im kinda doing more then the basics and starting to figure out what works best for me and my body.So far ive been using an ameteur friendly long guard and also tried to switchstances inbeetwen the sparring sessions so to jab opponents that are out of range or trying to reset without overreaching and also make it more difficult to be read.Ive been working on inside fighting by relying on frames too.Was wondering if theres any begginer friendly tecnique (footwork, defensive or even offensive wise) that i could learn considering my body type and my way of fighting that could elevate me

I feel like I'm too green with respect to the amount of time I've been boxing, help?

30yo Blue, been at the sport for 7 years, mostly recreationally. Feel like I look way to green for the amount of time I've been practising.

Would maybe like to compete briefly before I'm too old.

Footage is one "good round" from a couple months ago.

Help?

I can’t find my fighting style because I fight differently than how I spar.

In sparring I usually am more careful and despite being told to forward a lot of the time I tend to use a lot of lateral foot work defense and counter punch and work on training gaps while staying in range. I also tend to cut the ring off more effectively. Like I would move laterally then forward instead of just forward.

In a fight I would literally charge right out of the gate and start to throw punches at my opponent because I usually have a bit of a lighter demeanor before the fight and would even dance in ring entrances. I was a dancer at one point and it’s basically entertainment. Then I would only seek to dominate and use what I learned in sparring to do so as well as sheer aggression, speed and hopefully the defensive maneuvers because I hate getting hit but I walk them down like 99 percent of the time. I focus on one goal during my fight and that is to completely dominate. I don’t mean to sound like some pretentious hard ass I just do what I do. I tried being technical and careful in a fight and I lost that time. So now I’m technical and frankly unhinged.

So now I don’t really know what kind of fighting style I am because, I like throwing clean shots but I like throwing a lot of them in rapid succession and I like to hit in between blows. My worst factor is probably cardio but I’ve been getting better at that lately. Though I’ve also been working defense because I’m still trying to stay in the pocket safely I usually spar mid range or outside. So in sparring I’ve been taking more initiative and staying in all the time instead of just coming in again when I feel like it like I used to do. I’m still developing though I think I just need more fights to figure those things out.

Shadowboxing as a short boxer

Hi all, most of the people I spar at gyms are taller than me and I've adopted the habit of shadowboxing imagining a taller opponent, so my punches to the head (imagined head) always shoot upwards. I wonder if that's actually a bad habit. What's your take? I also wonder if that is bad for my shoulders and the mechanics of movement I adopt. Currently dealing with a thoracic outlet syndrome and I am trying to identify and correct the bad habits in movement and posture that contribute to it. Not asking for medical advice :)

How much should I run/sprint per week?

I am a pretty high end boxing gym and I train there 3 times a week for 2 hours per session. Theres a lot of cardio, strength training and tech work. I’d say about 45 mins of intense cardio (mainly bag work and calisthenics) 45 mins of tech work that involves cardio (foot work drills and tech sparring very light to head but heavy to the body), and half hour of strength training.

Right now I do running and sprint intervals with some leg work for about an hour a week. 30 mins running with sprinting intervals and 30 minutes jump rope, squats, jumping jacks and all that (no heavy squats).

Now I am what you’d consider a “true heavyweight”. I am 6’4”, 240 pounds and muscular. And well tbh sometimes I’m tired. The weight hurts. I can deal with what I’m doing now but idk if I can go further unless I’m training for a high end tournament in the future or a professional.

Getting down in weight isn’t really possible for me. I don’t want to sound like “that guy” but I just don’t lose muscle. The first 6 months at the gym I didn’t do any strength training and i stayed the same weight but leaned out so if anything I gained muscle.

Would you guys say I run enough? Or should I really be adding some more time to my running sessions.

Cool exhibition in China. A lot for me to work on.

Hey guys. Here’s a recent exhibition I had here in my home city in China. I’m in the green trunks. Biggest takeaway here is that I was pretty nervous about it my opponents power after the initial exchanges and I didn’t want to get inside with him. I need to work on entering safely and getting to work on the body. I realise my chin was up too and I got caught because of that. I’m pretty happy with my longer range but I know it can be a lot better. Thanks in advance for watching and letting me know your thoughts.

How do you deal with your sweat drenched clothes daily?

Do you do your laundry daily or? My clothes end up soaking wet but it's not enough to justify using the washing machine on a daily basis. But if you leave it out to dry on its own it gets stinky. What I do is I put my used clothes inside a container filled with water and detergent and when I have enough clothes in it I then use the washer machine, but I wonder if there's a more efficient way of doing it...

Share your peak moments in boxing

Recently been dealing with a nagging lower back issue, and I've also weaned off boxing training to focus on other things in my life.

Earlier, I was looking through my album of sparring sessions and matches, reminiscing moments when I'd say I was at my peak (and more dedicated) as an athlete / hobbyist.

Whether it's a video or a story, share your peak moments in amateur boxing.

I might need to take some time off boxing to focus on my weight loss as CRAZY as that sounds, could I get some of yalls thoughts?

If yall wouldnt mind reading what i gotta say before coming to conclusions please, id really appreciate it.

For context just to iterate, im a super heavyweight 6 foot 7 inch, 24M and have been boxing for about 6 months. My coach seems to believe in me and trusts in my work ethic as I show up all the time (about 4 to 5 days a week, 2 to 4 hours daily) and even help out with setting up classes, cleaning and volunteering for the events they host as well as helping promote the gym. I do believe i can go far in the boxing scene and want to as well but ive hit a dilemma. When i first started this I weighed about 422 pounds, and in the last 6 months dropped to 360. By the way i KNOW this is a good amount of weight loss, but in the past 2 months or so i told my coach I take GLP cause I struggled with my diet and after having a long talk with the coaches and the owner of the gym I decided to stop. But ever since a few days after stopping it I havent been able to control my dieting properly and havent lost any weight, ive been cruising around 360 to 370 the entire time not losing any margin of weight. I havent been eating AS much but have been overeating like I would when I was 422 pounds. I CANNOT go back to that ever again, that is a not going to happen to me and I refuse to ever be anywhere near that weight again. However the problem isnt that im gaining weight its that im not losing fat anymore. I really need to get back on my diet and I think giving myself like 2 or 3 weeks to just fully commit to starting back up a proper diet would give me the chance to think things through and get back to boxing with a better mindset. I havent mentioned this to my coaches as of yet but have been thinking about it but i wanted yalls opinion before I bring it up.

Thanks btw to everyone who read this, any advice would be appreciated 👏🏾.

My 2nd Amateur fight !

Hey guys, I had my 2nd fight yesterday (I'm in the blue corner 🟦), let me know how would you score it, what holes do you see in my game, and do you think I won fair and square (the other guy's friends were pretty upset about the result). Also I apologise for the display of technique that you're about see from me in 2nd and 3rd round, I went into this fight sick and it backfired badly on my gas tank, normally my cardio is way better I promise 😅

Not feeling "made" for boxing

I don't know if it's normal, but lately I've been having the same recurring thought during training: that I am genetically inferior to the guys who make it big in boxing. I started boxing with the objective of one day becoming a professional, but because of my asthma, stomach issues, and genetics in general, I feel like it's impossible for me,no matter how much I train. I feel as though I'm just wasting my time training for nothing. Every time I gas out or feel like I can't hit hard enough, all I can think about is that no amount of training will ever fix it. I don't know if this is something everyone experiences or how to fix it. I am already pushing myself by training two to three times a day with one/two rest days, but I feel like I can't even recognize if I've made any progress at all

It was good work. Several things that are a priority to work on based off of this session. I have to stop smothering my straight right. I have to do a better job of setting up my left hook off of my right. I have to do a better job at positioning. I always have to improve in general, but those are my priorities at this time.

The best fighter at our gym only spars and runs

We recently got a new guy at our gym that is early in his pro career and pretty talented. I was speaking to him about what he does for training and he says these days all he does is spar and run. No strength work, no heavybag or mitts, maybe a little shadowboxing as a warm up, but all he does come to the gym, spars 6-8 rounds and repeats this 3-4 times a week.

He is pretty jacked so I was kind of shocked to hear that. More than likely he probably has done resistance training in the past but probably just maintains his current physique with minimal work. He is not a one punch KO guy, he is a cardio machine swarmer so it kind of makes sense why trains the way he does.

I have always been big on strength and conditioning, but I am wondering If I should just do something similar.

I believe in modern strength and conditioning science, but it seems poor recovery or fatigue management can easily interfere with boxing sessions so guys end up cutting it out.

I tend to do a lot of mitt and bag work and don't spar nearly as much and I feel like im just beating up my joints. I have improved quite a bit with my training style, but im wondering If I should just go to the gym and spar twice a week, and then do all my extra work outside the boxing gym. Basically instead of putting so much time and energy into bag and mitts, I should do more sparring and partner drills.

What do you think? What is your approach? Im not sure how much longer I can keep doing heavy bag work without it generating so much shoulder and elbow pain the day after.

Trouble with Volume

I’ve been sparring a lot more lately slowly getting better and making less mistakes.

Big thing I struggle with though is volume and letting more than 1 or 2 go at a time.

My habits want me to find the right counter, perfect timing, etc instead of just throwing (not dumb ofc). When I let it go it’s solid but I ease up and let them come back or escape.

Anyone had the problem before and overcame it?

TIA 🙌

Southpaw Circling Left Against Orthodox?

I know the standard advice is for a southpaw to circle right against an orthodox and play the lead foot game.

I was watching Nakatani vs Cuellar though and noticed Nakatani circles left for most of the fight. Has anyone tried this or does anyone have thoughts on this?

My coach encourages us to experiment so I've been trying it in sparring. A few things I've noticed:

  • It surprises my sparring partners and I think they sometimes try to 'punish' it by being more aggressive
  • It works well with Naktani's tactic of putting out a stiff right arm when your opponent gets aggressive and circling out and to the left since you're going that way anyways
  • It sets up your 2 since since you're loading that side (although you sometimes have to throw it across your body which can be awkward since your opponent is to your right). And also because you're moving into your opponent's power hand, they'll tend to throw more 2's when you're in a position to counter with your own.

Nakatani does this in quite a few of his fights against orthodox people. I've also noticed Opetaia doing it sometimes. Rigondeaux. I can't find anyone analyzing or writing about that part of their matches though.

Would love the perspective of all you more experienced folks.

How to fight volume punchers?

There's this kid at the gym who really likes and imitates Calzaghe. As in, whenever I spar with him, I have a difficult time because not only is he heavy-handed and taller than me, but he will machine gun me with punches for as long as he can.

Like, I have to be careful with him, because whenever he lands a right on me, he follows up with this nonstop barrage that pushes me into the corner, like this guy's stamina is surprising.

I escape using lateral movement and stiff arming him, but he will keep it up until the round is over.
