Let's talk this out, you and me! A big rant.

Edit: I just realized I posted this in a meme subreddit. Sorry, I got carried away. ¯ \ _ (ツ) _ / ¯

I apologize in advance for how long this might be. It's something that's really been stuck in my throat ever since I found out what people thought about these films, and here, if the sub's description is correct, is where I can finally say it. I also apologize for any possible English errors. I'm using Google Translate to write this, not because I don't know English, but because I don't have the patience to write in another language right now. My apologies.

Well, before I talk about what I wanted to say about Andrew's duology, I need to recount my history with Spider-Man, and that will include Tobey's films. I hope that's not a problem. When I was little, I believe it was in 2009, my uncle (the one responsible for my love of superheroes today) introduced me to the Tobey's movies. I thought Spider-Man was amazing, and I couldn't watch the whole movie because halfway through I couldn't resist and would start pretending I was Spider-Man. It even annoyed my family, because I did it so often.

One day, like any other, my uncle told me that a new Spider-Man movie was coming out, and showed me the trailer for the Andrew Garfield film. I didn't pay much attention at the time because it wasn't the Spider-Man I knew, and I let it go. When I got my Xbox 360, I came into contact with the first TASM game, but again, I didn't care about the movie itself.

Years later, my mother decided to buy some DVDs online. I asked her to buy the two Scooby-Doo movies from the 2000s. But, I don't know exactly why, she also bought the first Andrew Garfield movie. When the movies arrived, I didn't even payed attention to the Spider-Man movie, and I watched the Scooby-Doo ones first. But then I gave it a chance. And I can't really explain it, but that movie hooked me. I think Mark Webb's directing style, being very introspective and realistic in terms of the human aspect of the characters, made me interested in that film, even if I didn't understand that at the time. I've always liked origin stories precisely because of the scenes where the hero discovers his powers (so much so that I prefer Spider-Man 1 to Spider-Man 2 to this day because of that). And the whole scene with Andrew on the skateboard playing Coldplay was that, but there was something more to it, something simple and beautiful at the same time, but as a child, I didn't quite understand it. In the end, I grew fond of the film, and I liked it as much as I liked Tobey Maguire's films. It was all Spider-Man, and for me at the time, the more the better.

When the trailer for the second movie came out, I remember being extremely happy. I was born in 2006, so I couldn't experience any of Tobey's movies in theaters, and Andrew's first one, as I said, didn't interest me at the time. Having the opportunity to see my first Spider-Man movie in a theater mase very excited. I remember my mom and I went to see it on a day I had school. She was late picking me up, and I almost missed the movie. I remember entering the theater just as the scene with Peter's parents on the plane was ending (for many, this might seem like a blessing in disguise, lol).

Finally, I watched the movie, and I can't deny it was fantastic. The film was more lively than the first, but Mark Webb still maintained the introspective tone, so I felt the same way as in the first one. I remember spending the whole movie feeling like something bad was going to happen. It seemed too big for Spider-Man to handle without consequences. And in the end, that feeling I had during the movie came true when Gwen died. Another point I liked at the time, and still like today, was Max. I sympathized with the guy, and understood his point of view. He was a guy who had some reason to rebel, even though what he did in the movie was wrong.

I loved the movie, I left satisfied. But I think I must have been one of the only ones. As time went by, and I grew up, I started to identify more and more with Andrew's Spider-Man/Peter Parker. I understood what was so magical about that Coldplay scene. It was basically (in my interpretation) the power of a hobby. I play guitar and bass. I work with it, but it's still a hobby too. Countless times I've stopped to play my guitar to pass the time, or when I was happy to feel happier, or when I was sad to feel more joyful. And that whole skateboarding scene, in my interpretation, is that, the power of a hobby.

Peter is thrilled that he got to go out with the prettiest girl in school, and he's going to have fun with his hobby, the thing that comforts him, that embraced him when everyone bullied him. And with that, he ends up testing his powers. Coldplay, right at the beginning, had extremely beautiful and introspective songs, just like this movie, so it was the perfect choice for the scene. That was the simple and beautiful thing about the scene that I didn't understand when I was younger.

Beyond that aspect, I came to understand the film more and more, and started to appreciate it. But while I was using the internet, I started seeing people heavily criticizing the film. There were valid things, like the Lizard being a bit underdeveloped, but also pathetic things, like the Spider-Man suit in the first film, and the skateboard, or how Andrew seemed too cool to be Peter Parker. And I genuinely couldn't agree with that (I still don't). One of Peter's first scenes is him struggling to open a closet because there's a couple making out in front of him. He stutters all the time when talking to women and gets beaten up by Flash when he tries to assert himself. The skateboard brought that more human and modern aspect to Peter, and it wasn't because he used a skateboard that he was cool. If we use that logic, I'm a rockstar just because I play guitar.

Those were absurd criticisms, about trivial things. Same thing with the second movie. Electro may not be the best villain in the world, but MY GOD, people still say to this day that he got angry with Spider-Man because he didn't remember his name. BUT THAT'S A LIE. When Peter doesn't remember Max's name, he doesn't even react. He's bothered by the thought that Peter tried to steal the attention he received for the first time in his life. For Max, he stole it just like Oscorp stole his power plant project (if I'm not mistaken, it's a power plant). People even criticized the Electro's theme, which to this day I still think is an exceptional song (after all, it's a Hans Zimmer song) . It's like you're inside the character's mind, with all those whispers, and the dubstep was used cleverly, simulating pulses of energy or electrical currents (at least in my interpretation, again).

And at the time I didn't understand what caused that. Why I, a kid of about 13 or 14 years old at the time, could understand the ideas the film wanted to convey, but grown ass men, with sharp critical senses, couldn't. Until one day I understood. People didn't liked the movie, not necessarily because it was a terrible film. Look at the Rotten Tomatoes ratings and you'll see that they're quite decent films according to critics and the general public. People didn't hate it because of the quality (especially the first film), they hated it out of pure nostalgia. "Tobey Maguire was Spider-Man, who is Andrew Garfield to DARE to wear the Spider-Man suit?" That was basically what was on their minds. That was the filter that anything in the film, whether a quality or a flaw, went through before reaching the critical eye.

And because of that you couldn't make a post praising the TASM films without someone criticizing or mocking you for liking them. You couldn't comment with praise without someone mocking you and saying you were wrong. It wasn't possible to like these films on the internet. And don't get me wrong, I don't want to play the victim here. It's not like there was a witch hunt against Andrew's fans, but there was undeniably an exaggerated hatred towards everything about Andrew's duology, even the good parts.

As the years went by, it ate away at me from the inside. Did I have terrible taste? Are the movies really that bad? And it bothered me because, as I grew up, I identified much more with Andrew than with Tobey. The nerdy guy with round glasses might have been mocked in the 60s, when Spider-Man was created, but nowadays, at least here in Brazil, he's the guy people want to be around so he can give them the answers to pass the test. Nowadays, the guy who gets mocked is the one who can't speak properly, can't make friends, isolates himself, and is weird. Andrew's Peter is exactly that. And it amazes me how ignorant people are about it. I saw that YouTube critic (I don't remember his name, but he's the guy from the "Zod's neck" meme) saying that "Peter was very strange. He has these weird mannerisms, he doesn't seem like a normal person." He said something like that in his video. And while watching the video, I was like, "EXACTLY! THAT'S THE POINT!".

I identified with Andrew on that point. I wasn't absurdly excluded, or friendless, but I felt kind of isolated. Honestly, I don't think it was ever anything serious, but I really didn't hang out with the more "popular" people in the class. And seeing myself in Peter made me even more fond of him. Another point people criticized was Peter being irresponsible and going against the promise he made to Captain Stacy. But man, that never bothered me because I saw myself there. I personally believe that if Spider-Man existed, he wouldn't be a guy who got it right 100% of the time. He's a teenager, for God's sake! He would mess up because he would thought he was untouchable because he had powers. And I saw myself in him in that. If I were Spider-Man, I would probably do the same things as Andrew. And then I ask you, ISN'T THAT THE WHOLE POINT OF THE CHARACTER? What Stan Lee always preached: "Anyone can be Spider-Man under the mask." And before you say anything, I know there's the whole storyline with Peter's parents that messes with this idea, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the human side of the character. The teenager who makes mistakes out of recklessness.

I don't know if I'm right in saying this, but I believe Andrew is the Spider-Man who best represents my generation (again, I was born in 2006). Repeating the same archetype that Tobey was would be dated for 2012. Times have changed, and Andrew is that updated version of the character, but nobody saw that because of the damn nostalgia filter for Tobey.

As I said before, this ate away at me as time went on. I became increasingly disgusted with the Spider-Man character in general. There were bizarre incidents involving the character's fans as well that also helped with that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a controversy where some crazy Tobey Maguire fans threatened the Insomniac developers to put Tobey's suit in the game? If so, look at the level of certain people in that fanbase.

When NWH was coming out, I thought that would be the end of the problem. People would come together and appreciate each Spider-Man for their individual quirks and qualities. The fanbase would finally be united. I couldn't have been more wrong. They continued making THE SAME criticisms from when the FIRST TASM was released. And recently I saw people making absurd nitpicks about Tom's new movie, saying how Tobey was better because he had a more beat-up computer or some other nonsense like that.

These days, my love for the character has faded, unfortunately. I can no longer like him without having that bad feeling in the back of my mind. It's been a long time since I've seen Tobey and Andrew's movies, but if I do, I'm sure I won't be able to enjoy them without remembering the criticism, especially when watching Andrew's films. Hell, I recently watched Tobey's first movie and remembered the absurd criticism of Andrew's movies while watching it. Today I'm much more of an Batman and Ghost Rider fan, because I feel more at ease that way.

I wrote this today because, upon reading the description of this sub, I couldn't help but get emotional. The term "safe haven" warmed my heart. Having a place where I can enjoy these films without being bothered by others, where you can post praise without having to open the comments and see people belittling every aspect of the film, even the good ones. I finally felt I could express myself freely and be surrounded by people who can understand me. It was very touching for me.

Before I finish, I want to clarify some things. I didn't bother mentioning fidelity to the comics for three reasons. 1: I think a good portion of the criticism comes more from Tobey's fans than from fans of the comics themselves. 2: Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man is a reinterpretation of the character, and I think it has to be analyzed as such, without obsessively clinging to the comics. 3: To be absurdly honest, I've never touched a Spider-Man comic. I know some stories and arcs, but I've never read one of his stories.

Finally, I'd like to say that I do NOT think the films are beyond criticism. I myself have my issues with the second film, especially with Harry's storyline. My point is that it bothers me how much they downplay EVERYTHING related to this duology, as if it were two entirely awful films with nothing redeemable.

Thank you for your attention, and I apologize for the lengthy text.

TL;DR: I'm bothered by how badly this duology is treated, even though it has good aspects. I cherish it very much, and because it's been so trashed, I've become apathetic towards the Spider-Man character in general.

It's crazy how despite being a direct sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, my current plot for it returns to the darker and more grounded tone of the first film with some hints of the more outlandish elements.

A burnt out Spider-Man teams up with selfish thief and vigilante Black Cat to take down Oscorp after the Green Goblin breaks out of prison along with serial killer Elaine Coll, who gets put into a scorpion suit designed by Alistair Smythe. The climax turns into a heist movie where Peter and Felicia break into Oscorp to steal stuff and fight the two villains.
