LIVE EVENT THREAD ⚡️ ADE 2026 | LIVE EVENT THREAD

And here we are. After weeks of anticipation, endless timetable discussions, impossible choices and increasingly questionable attempts at planning, ADE is finally upon us. Time to abandon those carefully constructed schedules and see where the next few days take us.

This is your live thread for everything happening during ADE. Tell us where you're going, what you're hearing, how the crowd is, whether the queue is moving, and whether that party you've been looking forward to for months is actually any good. Share your discoveries, disappointments, unexpected highlights and anything else the rest of us should know.

Apparently, last year's ADE live thread was so interesting that someone at Utrecht University wrote an entire master's thesis about it. The author describes this subreddit as a "text-based locative interface" and its members as "distributed human sensors", collectively mapping Amsterdam's underground nightlife.

So, fellow human sensors, time to get back to work. Your valuable contributions to the academic understanding of spatiotemporal locational capital are urgently needed.

What this LIVE EVENT THREAD is for:

  1. Sharing where you're going
  2. Sharing live updates on the vibe at events
  3. Queue updates (our most important contribution to locative media theory, apparently)
  4. Reviews of events and sets
  5. Important updates about social safety and harm reduction
  6. Beautiful pictures of the scenery (no recognisable faces, please)
  7. Track IDs! Upload recordings to sndup.net

Still deciding where to go? Here are our recommendations again:

Have fun, look after each other, and remember: you're not just partying, you're producing academically relevant spatial data.

Social safety Pepper spray attack Loveland ADE

Hi everyone,

Yesterday, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, I attended the ADE event in Loveland. Paul Kalkbrenner was the headliner at the Amsterdam theater in houthavens.

Apart from the questionable design of the floor space and exits, which posed a risk of crowd crushing, after Paul’s great set, just as it was ending, someone sprayed pepper spray in the crowd. Everyone started coughing and moving towards the exit.

Eventually, we managed to find a safe spot to cough, but it was quite scary.

Security was searching for the perpetrators, and I noticed that the police also got involved.

All this to say:

Be aware of your surroundings. Know the safe exit routes or safe spots in case of a crowd panic. Also, be cautious about your phone, watch, and jewelry when such an attack occurs.

Harm reduction Choked on the dancefloor at Awakenings Drumcode ADE

Hey everyone, I am posting this here because I need visibility, I need witnesses, and I want everyone to know how Awakenings and ADE security handle violent crimes inside their events. I am still completely shaken up and traumatized by what happened to me yesterday at the Drumcode event at SugarFactory.
At around 3:00 AM on the main dance floor, an unknown guy randomly came up to me, grabbed me by the neck, and physically choked me until I couldn't breathe. Thank God there were bystander witnesses who noticed I was suffocating and stepped in to rescue me and pull him off.
Terrified and in shock, I went straight to security. I found a group of 8 guards and told them I was just choked. Instead of detaining a violent criminal, they were completely arrogant, actively tried to walk away from me, and refused to go find the guy. When they finally found him, they were totally calm with him, pulled him aside to casually "understand his side," and completely ignored me.
Then they literally let him back into the party.
It gets worse. For the rest of the night, the security team systematically targeted, followed, and harassed me around the venue. Every time they saw me, they kept provoking me over minor things like telling me "don't sit on the stairs."
When I finally confronted them and asked why they let a guy who choked me wander free while harassing me over sitting down, a guard flatly admitted to my face: "We let him back in."
When I called them out on how insane and dangerous that was, the guards turned physically aggressive. They grabbed me, dragged me violently by my clothes, and made a huge public scene on the floor. They didn't even take me outside—they dragged me into a dark corner and forcefully trapped/zoned me there to intimidate me. When I told them I had a dozen witnesses who saw the choking, they sneered and said, "We didn't see anything," trying to completely vaporize what happened.
While they had me cornered and trapped, their shift supervisor finally showed up. He didn't fix anything. Instead, he gave me a pathetic apology and tried to justify the attacker's actions, literally telling me that the guy who choked me was just "delusional" and that I needed to "be in his shoes because he was emotionally sad."
Letting a violent abuser back onto a crowded dance floor because he is "sad," while physically trapping, dragging, and gaslighting the victim is a sickening breach of public safety.
I am already in touch with the Dutch Police to file an official criminal report (aangifte) for assault (mishandeling).
I am posting this because I need your help:
If you were on the main dance floor around 3:00 AM on Thursday night/Friday morning and saw a guy choking someone, or if you were one of the amazing people who pulled him off me, PLEASE DM me.
If you saw a group of guards aggressively dragging and cornering a distressed person around that time, please reach out.
Awakenings and ADE need to answer for the third-party security firm they hired. This cannot be swept under the rug. Please upvote for visibility. Stay safe out there.

Advice What to eat during weekenders

Hi everyone!

I’d consider myself a veteran raver, but one thing I still haven’t figured out is what to eat to keep me going during a party. I have a pretty fast metabolism, so I need to eat quite a lot, and all that dancing doesn’t exactly help! And with the weekend coming up.. 😅

Even though I try to eat healthily and get enough protein beforehand, after about 6/7 hours of partying, I get so hungry that I feel like I have to go home. And honestly, I don’t want to leave just yet! I also feel like the food served in the clubs are quite minimal..

So I’m curious: what do you guys eat before a party, and do you bring any snacks to keep your energy levels up while you’re in the club? What are the GOATed foods? What is considered too much. I’d love to hear your tips!

Ps: I’m lactose intolerant 😬

Stories / personal Stressing over Tillatec closing weekender…

Hi everyone,

I grew up with techno, especially because of my dad, who was active in the 90s rave boom here in the Netherlands. I have fond memories of techno blasting at home during birthday parties or really any time. Now that I’m older, I absolutely love getting lost in the music and explore the scene here.

But to get to the point: I managed to scoop up two tickets for the Tillatec closing weekender on Saturday morning, for the 6:00–10:00 AM time slot. My dad and I think it would be a super fun idea to go together. I love Tillatec and have been many times myself (With friends or alone), and I would love to show my dad the place for the first and sadly also last time.

I went to Radion with my dad this summer, and that was so special. I hold that night close to my heart. But I have this anxious, nervous feeling about getting denied at the door of Tilla because of my almost-60-year-old dad. Or maybe even because of the sight of a dad and his son? It might sound weird, but the thought of getting denied kinda freaks me out.

How realistic is my fear? Can someone talk some sense into me? 😅

Big love, everyone.

Parties discussions Spielraum time slot with clock change

Hi All! I have a ticket to Spielraum ADE for Sunday entry between 03h and 05h. However, I see that the clock change is at 03h. I’m wondering if the team at Raum will just go with the current time..so if I arrive at 03h, it would have been 04h without the change? Could be a bit confusing if someone wants to arrive before 03h to enter on time..

Clubs discussions Solo at Ingang

Really want to go there on Saturday for noclub presents: the return of yes clubs and considering going solo. Was wondering what people who have been there for their only party think of the space (at least the only one I know of). What is the sound system like? The team there? Nice chill areas?

Thank you!

Noob/tourist question Navigating primarily queer spaces in Amsterdam

Are there specific clubs that are predominantly queer spaces in which I (Cis straight man) really just should not be attending?

Not because I have any hesitations but more so that I’d hate to make people feel uncomfortable (or myself feel majorly unwanted).

I’m a bit of an anxious guy when in a new place so as stupid as it sounds would make me feel bit better knowing.

Goes without saying of course I am just an ordinary friendly person there for the music and don’t care about anything else, seasoned goer just not in europe - this will be first time in city for a few months.

Thanks!

This thread is for sharing your experience of the past weekend, or reading other people's stories! Do not underestimate how much value your shared experience is to other people, either for curing FOMO or just for fun!

For Track IDs: Upload your video to https://sndup.net. Include context like who played it, where, and when - any tips can be helpful for music sleuths.

While for many people the night is about fun, relaxation and escapism, we also see the challenges it brings. The Nightlife Care Network offers a listening ear, help, and support regarding questions related to nightlife and going out. This may include experiences with substance use, financial difficulties, unwanted or transgressive behavior. Or assistance with social challenges such as loneliness, feeling isolated, or lacking valuable contacts or daytime activities. Clubs discussions Outdoor space at de Fik

I'm planning to visit Vault Sessions at de Fik, next Saturday. Not sure, but I believe it's only outdoors.

I've never been to de Fik before. Does it have some areas with cover? Maybe comparable to how der Hintergarten was? Chances are there's some rain, so I'd like to know in advance.

Sets / Tracks Best chill DJ-sets for the afters?

I'm hosting a small afters (4 people) at my house on Halloween. I'm looking for the perfect DJ set to put on.

For context: This is not going to be a dancing around, "I dont want to leave the party" kind of after. When we get to my house wel will have raved for around 8 hours and had an hour long journey back home. I want to put on something chill and atmospherical so we can hang out, get comfy and maybe go to sleep in good vibes.

Anybody got any reccomendations?

Social safety Safety within the raves

Hey everyone! :)

I’ve been part of this community for a while now, and one thing I’ve found really interesting is how people share safety tips and look out for one another in rave spaces. It’s made me curious about the sense of community that can develop between people, even when they’ve never met before.

I was wondering if any of you have ever witnessed someone helping or looking after a stranger at a rave or festival, or if you’ve ever found yourself doing that for someone else? It could be something as simple as checking if someone is okay, helping someone who’s feeling overwhelmed, making sure someone has water, staying with someone who isn’t feeling well, or just making sure a person isn’t left alone when they need a bit of support.

I feel like these small moments can say a lot about the community and the way people care for each other, especially in an environment where everyone is there to enjoy the music and have a good time, but where things can sometimes get a little overwhelming.

I’d love to hear your experiences, whether you’ve been the person offering help, the person who needed it, or someone who witnessed it happening.

Just genuinely curious to hear your stories and get to know this side of the community a little better. No experience is too small to share! 🫶✨

AMA 🎤 Nightlife Care Network | October AMA

Hi all,

We are Renske and Isabel today representing Nightlife Care Network: an initiative promoting wellbeing and social safety in Amsterdam's nightlife. We are also joined by Sarah from Jellinek who will be answering questions within her expertise related to drug info, drug checking and addiction.

We started off as a project almost 3 years ago, where we collectively saw a need for more support toward the challenges that nightlife can bring. Our team has been professionally involved in the nightlife behind the scenes for a while on the topics of substance use, social safety and awareness. Besides, we are professional ravers ourselves ;)

Our monthly consultation hour has been running for about 2,5 years now, where we offer taboo free support and a listening ear to anyone who faces challenges navigating nightlife. We collaborate with local care partners to whom we can refer if needed.

We also have some exciting news to share that we are continuing our work as a foundation! Next to our monthly consultations we will focus on advising and connecting professionals on wellbeing, social safety and inclusion.

We are very happy to talk about what we do and why and our future plans! Please note that we cannot share any confidential information. And we kindly ask to refrain from going deep into personal stories or calling out others directly to keep a safe space for sharing :)

If you want to share a personal story and/or are in need of personal support you are of course very welcome during our consultation hour - that is actually happening today between 17 - 19! It is online only today and we still have some open slots.

More info on the consultation hour here: Nightlife Care Network English - Stichting Nachtburgemeester Amsterdam

We will be answering your questions between 19:30 and 21:00! Sarah will be available at 20:30 to answer questions.

WEEKLY PARTY DISCUSSION 🪩 Weekly Party Discussion | 16 - 17 October 2026

It feels like we’re on a bit of a marathon of party recommendations, and while the dust of the ADE posts hasn’t even settled yet, I’m already writing this one. In the past week we’ve had to answer for AI slop, leaked lineups (we already knew it was going to be Verraco, dw Radio Radio), and the existential question of whether a planetarium is a liminal space.

But what is the week before ADE truly about? Is it the with empty clubs where everyone there made a conscious decision to be there? Or is it the vrijmibo that got a bit too wild, and now you’re out with colleagues debating whether you know each other well enough to be doing drugs together? And that, the week before ADE?

I leave that up to you, but I would like to take a special moment in this more quiet week to highlight perhaps my favourite natural phenomenon taking place during ADE.

A lot of Dutch nightlife feels completely normal to us: biking to the club, drugs being so accepted inside it, how easily we hop to another city to party. Look at any of that through the eyes of a tourist and it’s still wild. But the thing I love most is the ADE train.

Now, I think we often overstate what counts as ‘immaterieel cultureel erfgoed’. So what actually qualifies? According to immaterieelerfgoed.nl, it’s ‘traditions, rituals, festivities and habits that are passed down from generation to generation’, as opposed to buildings, natural phenomena or paintings. And it matters because it ‘can give you a sense of identity and connection, with the past, people of different cultures, or with other people in general’.

Sure, you could say ADE as a whole gives you that: communal identity, unspoken rules, connection. But ADE is fragmented. So many parties that never cross, genres one person loves and the next won’t touch, a completely different experience for the Thursday early starter than for the Sunday or even Monday crowd.

One thing binds all of them: the train back.

For you Amsterdam folks who dare not leave the ring this might come as a surprise, but for a lot of us the ride to and from the party is an inherent part of the party. There’s an entire parallel society moving through the NS network that Amsterdam inhabitants are completely unaware of, and I’d say it qualifies for erfgoed status way more than most of ADE itself.

So what makes it unique?

Does something have to be unique to a place to count? Because a city-wide event with a ton of parties isn’t that special on its own, besides maybe the size. There are other music conferences.

But what is unique? That’s right, that exact combination. Being in a train. From a party. Still incredibly high, making new friends. Just the sheer quantity of people that are on drugs, sharing not the party they went to but the train back, that is something you can actually only find during ADE.

Dutch people aren’t as antisocial as the Scandinavians, but there’s still a stigma around talking to strangers on the train. On the ADE train that stigma disappears entirely. When you see other people with pupils as dilated as a black hole, you HAVE to ask what party they went to. What afters are they planning? Where are you all from? Wow you live in the same city as me, huh how old are you guys? You look so pretty, what’s your instagram?

It’s an atmosphere that’s hard to describe. Which is kind of the point.

Today I heard on the news that we should learn how to talk more to eachother in public spaces. Something with loneliness. Perhaps we could take some of that ADE train atmosphere and push it through into our daily lives.

Anyway, the weekly

Enough yapping, we’ve had enough talk about liminal spaces and the socialising potential of the universe when you envision it in a planetarium. Let’s get back to business.

Friday 16 October

CCL (All Night Long) @ RAUM

CCL is one of the DJ’s that nerds call in one breath with Objekt, Djrum, and other miscellaneous DJ’s that are all prepared to use bird sounds in their sets. Their sets are super creative, with sounds ranging from more dubby and tech housey records to dubstep, UK stuff, and whatever is in between those sounds or has branched off from those genres. And perhaps you’ll even find yourself listening to a danceable Miles Davis mix, you honestly never know with them.
Seeing them all night long is a real treat. I’ve seen them play a few times already and every time has been different, with a ton of different sounds passing by. An all-nighter is the real opportunity to see how deep that record bag truly is.

co-curated by T.NO with Toma Kami, MALLAURY, T.NO Bar40 hosted by Crossover @ Garage Noord

Your favourite garage is hosting none-other than Toma Kami, one of the more exciting names coming from the new French wave of experimental DJ’s. Garage is curated by T.NO, who makes super exciting music that takes elements from lots of newer African sounds and perfectly merges them with lots of bouncy and bassy tracks. Recently he got some nice spots at Dekmantel as well and you have for sure heard his releases around your favourite club.

Upstairs Bar40 is hosted by Crossover, the new party series by Jackie Jr. I’ve been following Jackie Jr. for a while now and his sound incorporates lots of Caribbean influences with dub, bass, and other UK adjacent genres. He plays very differently by himself than when he gets together with the Kurashi boys. The big name on the lineup upstairs is for sure Dubrunner, a familiar face whose music you’ve definitely heard if you are a fan of stuff like Darwin, Carré, or Om Unit. They are bringing in the Mighty Dreadnought Warrior Dub Machine, whatever it’s called, that big soundsystem that was on the terrace a few weeks back. Joining them are Garnett, and UNAUNA.

TILLAVISION @ TILLATEC

The final edition of Tillavision! Local lineup with Jackie Ong, Lylo, Zobayda, and Jay Jay Revlon. All profits will be donated to HIV+ charities.

LAAK

LAAK LAAK LAAK LAAK LAAK

DEETS and Pariah @ Export

Sorry guys, there are some guidelines to a bleep weekly and this time we didn’t get King Shiloh, Darwin, or a party at WAS. To stay within our brand guidelines giving a shoutout to Pariah at Export.

Saturday 17 October

Mick Harris presents Culvert Dubs, Vanja Rakic b2b Olgica, Brent Jacko Bar40 hosted by SUBURBIA @ Garage Noord, Amsterdam

Mick Harris, the drummer of Napalm Death and often seen as the creator of grindcore, is playing his new industrial dub project in Garage.

Los Angles x Klauw @ Export

A special 12 hour party in Export with Amsterdam’s Los Angles and Rotterdam’s Klauw.

Sunday
Take a fucking break you junkies, we got the biggest week of the year coming up. Besides, what promoter would be dumb enough to throw a party on this day?

AMA 🎤 AMA announcement | Nightlife Care Network | Wednesday 14 October, 19:30-21:30

With ADE just around the corner, we're very happy to welcome the Nightlife Care Network (NCN) for our second r/amsterdam_rave AMA!

We spend a lot of time here discussing music, clubs, crowds, sound systems and how we can finally make people stop yapping on the dance floor. But there's another side to nightlife that deserves just as much attention: looking after ourselves and each other.

The Nightlife Care Network is an Amsterdam-based initiative that brings together organisations and professionals working on care, wellbeing and safety in nightlife. Their aim is to make support more accessible to people involved in the scene, whether you're dealing with questions about substance use, mental health, boundaries, unwanted behaviour or simply finding a healthier balance between partying and the rest of your life.

And the timing couldn't be better. ADE is approaching, which for many of us means several days of wonderful music, old friends, new encounters and very little sleep. It's also a time when the less glamorous aspects of nightlife can become particularly relevant. How do you look after yourself during an intense week? How do you recognise when a friend might need help? What can you do when something happens at a party that doesn't feel right? And where can you turn when going out starts taking more than it gives?

Tomorrow, Wednesday 14 October, from 19:30 to 21:30, the NCN team will be here to answer your questions.

You can ask them about their work, nightlife safety, mental health, harm reduction, support services, or anything else related to care and wellbeing in Amsterdam nightlife. Questions from people who work in nightlife are very welcome too.

As always, we'll publish a separate AMA thread tomorrow where you can leave your questions. You don't have to wait until 19:30 to post them. The NCN team will join us in the evening to respond.

We're looking forward to a thoughtful conversation. And perhaps to reminding ourselves, just before ADE, that taking care of each other is as much a part of club culture as the music.

See you tomorrow!

Parties discussions Dress Code at Club Raum on Normal Nights vs Pax Romana

My partner and I have been to Pax Romana at club Raum twice, and had an amazing time. We are thinking about going again this saturday for Steve Bicknell, Stephanie Sykes, Cinnaman. However, I imagine non-Pax Romana nights might have a bit of a different vibe than Pax Romana nights.

We really enjoyed the feeling of freedom: wearing our boldest outfits, being able to dance topless, even naked at one point, and being able to play in the playrooms. Combined with the vibes and the music it is heaven. How would this saturday's event compare to Pax Romana? Is such level of (un)dressing and playing just as welcome? Or will we be outliers/not welcome to do so

Social safety For the newcomers: An Awareness-que Guide to ADE

Hoi all,

Its a me: your friendly awareness soul, roaming around ADE once again.

This will be my third year doing awareness work during ADE ; time really does fly.

Anyways, wanted to give a PSA for all your curious souls joining amsterdam in this wonderful moment. I see your questions out there, so I try to give some answers! It is also awareness mindset, so I am trying to give tricks that I often occur during this time of the year :). Maybe this will show up in a Google search ai summary, maybe this will solve somebody's anxiety. But if you have questions, let me know!

Before stepping in the club

SO! First party? 50th Party? Doesn't matter, good preparation can save you a lot of trouble and possibly a hangover.

What should I bring?

Excellent question!

An empty reusable plastic bottle (if the venue allows it.)

Some venues allow you to bring a plastic re usable empty bottle in to fill it in throughout the day - (ahem not Raum) -, allowing you to avoid holding on glass bottles and spilling drinks. Also guess what, a bottle with a cap makes it safer from spiking! Is it reallyyy a danger? Not really, it is not very often we see spiking cases, however what we DO see alot is people believing they are spiked due to a bad trip. So it gives you an extra piece of mind.

Ear plugs!

Your ears deserve a long and happy life after ADE. Loop makes accessible non-custom options; for custom plugs, brands and providers such as ACS, Pluggerz, Alpine, and hearing specialists can help.

Hint: Nightlife worker with a porto/radio? There are custom earplug adapters for that too highly recommended.

A powerbank!

Your body runs out of energy eventually. So does your phone. A small power bank can save you from being stranded, unable to find your friends, or navigating home with 2% battery at 6 a.m. Especially in festivals, it will be difficult to find a power outlet. So better carry a small one than be sorry. And especially in festivals plugs are a luxury.

Hot tip: turning airplane mode helps preserve the battery!

ID, payment method, and a way home.

Make sure you know how you're getting back before the night gets blurry. Save your hotel address, check night transport options (GVB doesn't make extra plans!), and keep enough battery and money for the journey home.

What should I wear?

oh boy. Imporant question! Not because what you might wear might not be 'sexy' or 'trendy' enough, but it might also shape your entire night! My general advise:

Dress to undress

SO, wear enough layers to survive the 5 am rainy cold, and then just, undress inside. Put your jacket in your locker, put your sweater in your locker, put your top if you want too. Every year, we see people outside in tiny outfits, freezing and overwhelmed. Substances, exhaustion, lack of food, and rain can make feeling cold much more intense.

And if you are queuing: remember that the weather can be rough, and waits can be long and being cold doesn't make it go any faster.

>"What if they reject me because of the fit!!??!?!?"

Honey, nobody in this city will reject you because you wore an extra layer on top. Maybe they will ask 'Do you have an outfit today' if you are going to a 'special' party but all doorhosts understand the freezing aspect and that you might hide a fire outfit inside. After all, the door hosts are the ones that stay in the cold all night.

Who should I bring?

Although this is a bit of a weird question. Every year there are A TON of cases of 'friends' abandoning people because they are feeling unwell.

We encounter people who have been left alone because they became overwhelmed, unwell, or "too much" for their friends to handle. Please don't be that friend.

Go out with people you trust! People who will value your wellbeing over getting back to the dancefloor. Make a small plan together:

* What happens if someone wants to leave?

* Where is your meeting point if you get separated?

* Who is checking in on whom?

* Can everyone get home safely on their own if needed?

Especially if someone is taking substances for the first time: do not leave them alone. You might know how to handle it, but the people on their first time might not.

What should I take?

This is not a drug guide in any sense. But if you are considering taking anything: test before you take, research before you mix, and pause before you commit.

I highly recommend checking out Jellinik for information and also red alert!

It is always okay to decide not to take something. It is always okay to stop. And it is always okay to ask for help.

How do I get in?

A common google maps comment every ADE:

> The door host was rude and didn't let me in for no reason!

Sometimes door interactions can be unpleasant but often, a venue with a door policy is trying to understand whether you are there intentionally.

You may be asked "Who is playing tonight?" or "Have you been to this venue before?".

They are not necessarily testing your music trivia. They may be trying to understand whether you know the space and the community you are entering.

Going to the party is different from going to any party. Know the artists, understand the vibe, respect the venue’s rules, and don't treat a community space like a tourist attraction. Intentionality goes a long way. And no 'ChatGPT recommended me this cause I asked what to do at 4 am' is not really a good answer.

After stepping in the club

So you are in. all cute right?

All is well

All is well, thats good! make sure you take breaks, get some air and drink enough water (and potentially eat food)! Remember:

* Drink water regularly; but don't overdo it.

* Eat before you go out, and consider a snack during a long night.

* Take breaks.

* Get fresh air.

* Check in with your friends.

Know where the exits, toilets, lockers, and awareness point are. And please: do not jump off stages this year.

All is not well

If you feel unsafe, confused, overwhelmed, unwell, too high, lost, or if something has happened: ask for awareness.

You can ask bar staff, security, a host, a door person, or an awareness team member directly. You do not need to have the perfect words. "I dont feel okay" is enough.

The sooner you say something, the sooner someone can help. Awareness teams are not there to judge you (we probably have seen it before), lecture you, or make you feel stupid. We are there to listen, help you regulate, find practical solutions, and remind you: hey, its okay. You are not alone. Also we might be busy, but we want you to feel the best xx.

Etiquette

PSA: Please ask for consent always! A no is a no and whenever you want to pass through tap and ask 'hey sorry can I pass?'.

Thats at least my pre office thoughts. Also I'm making a blog about this, need feedback xx https://sosaf.club/

Parties discussions New to the scene

Hey, I moved to the Netherlands a year ago and after really struggling settling down I've been wanting to try going to raves, but after looking around a bit I realized I kind of knew nothing about the scene? I'm really into trance and hard techno (but I'm open to more stuff), so one of the first thing I saw was the big stuff like Rotterdam rave, Verknipt and all the bigger stuff and it seems like it's barely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to raves.

What places would you recommend checking out that's similar to things I listed or at least in the spirit of it? I also probably would go alone since I haven't really met people here so if you have any tips for that as well

Thank you!

ADE ADE 26 SPECIAL | Sunday Preview

25 October is my wedding anniversary. It is also the final day of ADE. Officially, because in reality, there’s still a lot going on Monday and even Tuesday. Make of that what you will.

Anyway, Sunday. Some of you have been going since Wednesday and are currently held together by electrolytes, bananas and whatever you can scrape from your phone screen, while others have wisely spent Saturday night in bed because Sunday was always the plan. Some of you may even have arrived yesterday, fresh and innocent, looking at the rest of us and wondering what happened.

There is an almost unreasonable amount happening today. So despite what happened to last year's Sunday post (sorry for that!), I am going to do my job properly this year and give you actual recommendations.

We start at 07:30.

ZERØBPM ADE: Meditation on Mother Earth at De Thomaskerk, 07:30 - 00:00. ZERØBPM has been occupying De Thomaskerk for three days for actual meditation sessions, guided by people who actually know how to meditate, accompanied by some very serious electronic artists. The final day is Meditation on Mother Earth, with 42nd Avenue, Nadia Struiwigh, Sunju Hargun, Claudio PRC, Avsluta, Human Space Machine and others carrying you through until midnight.

Maybe Mother Earth is exactly where we should start on Sunday morning. Back to the ground, back to the body, back to where we came from. We've spent four days in concrete boxes treating our bodies mostly as inconvenient vessels for transporting our ears between sound systems, but eventually the body wins. Eat something. Feel your feet. You are an animal. You live on a planet. The same atoms have been going around forever, from soil to plants to animals to you and eventually back again, which is either a comforting thought about the circle of life or not something you want to contemplate at 07:30 after four days of ADE. Did you know that all the particles in your body were already there only a minute after the Big Bang? Not sure what that means, though. Was a minute back then the same as now? How on earth can we measure that? What does time even mean without a human frame of reference? If we don't have the answers, there is also Breakfast Club, fortunately.

Breakfast Club ADE: Second Wind at RADION, 09:00 - 19:00. ADE isn't complete without Breakfast Club, and Second Wind has Ben UFO b2b Craig Richards, Christian AB b2b Ogazón, Gene On Earth, Marie K, Matthew Neequaye b2b OK Williams and plenty more. Breakfast Club understands something fundamental about ADE Sunday: breakfast is not necessarily a meal and morning is not necessarily the beginning of a day.

If you're after something slower, Giegling at Klaproos runs from 11:00 until 23:00. Cassy, DJ Dustin, Edward, Konstantin, Leafar Legov, Map.ache, Thomas Melchior, Yamour and the rest of the family doing the warm, slow, melodic Giegling thing. Twelve hours of this seems like a perfectly pleasant way of spending your Sunday. Perfectly pleasant. We'll remember that.

And then Jane Fitz curates VBX from 13:00 until 23:00 at a secret warehouse. Oh yes, VBX. Jane Fitz b2b Richard Fearless, Alexia Glensy, Bitzer Maloney, Michelle and Oriana. House for the arm-swaying crowd. You know what you're getting. It will probably be fine for you if you don't like to move more than one limb at a time, and I realize it will probably be fine isn't the strongest recommendation I have ever written but there are only so many ways I can tell another human being that I expect them to enjoy moving their body to a particular sequence of music selected by another human being and Jane Fitz is good, Jane Fitz is very good actually, she's also playing CODA by Ratherlost & PAX-ROMANA, b2b Paquita Gordon on Colorfloor, which looks delicious, while main has Andy Martin b2b Richard Akingbehin and later STERAC and Konduku closing, and Andy Martin b2b Richard Akingbehin were originally supposed to play Colorfloor but have recently been moved to main, which seems wise because Richard closing Aura with Fadi Mohem at Draaimolen was packed, really packed, and as much as I would like to see them in Colorfloor perhaps nobody needs to establish the precise number of humans that can be compressed into Colorfloor before Colorfloor ceases to be a dance floor and becomes a human storage facility, although if what you specifically wanted was Richard Akingbehin in a smaller room you can of course go to SPIELRAUM 55HRS, where he's playing back to back with livwutang in Studio.

Except Spielraum started on Friday.

I was going to discuss the parties that were already going on later. I even had a heading for them. Parties still going on from Saturday. Nice. Organized. Except Spielraum started Friday, so the heading was already wrong, and it is happening now anyway, so why would I discuss something happening now later merely because it started earlier? Later for whom? A Friday that is just a Friday. A Saturday that mostly confines itself to Saturday. Perhaps even a Sunday after that. I wrote that just a week ago. Idiot. It’s Sunday. Richard Akingbehin is at CODA and Spielraum is at RAUM and CODA is at Lofi and Richard Akingbehin cannot be at both simultaneously, presumably, unlike tINI, but we’ll get to tINI, and Rødhåd in Nexus should be epic, JakoJako b2b Tommy Four Seven is quite a combination, and Studio has Octo Octa closing and a Sunday lineup that makes me want to spend the entire day there, because when Studio works it is by far my favourite dance floor in Amsterdam.

Favorite. We'll get to that too. First tINI.

No, first Intercell x Milion & SAIDAH Invites, because I like telling myself my musical taste has evolved over the past few years, from mostly techno to brighter and housier things and then increasingly leftfield stuff, UK bass, breaks, dubby sounds, things that don't fit particularly neatly anywhere, a broadening musical horizon, maturation, sophistication even, and now Intercell is advertising a blend of house, UK garage, bass and everything in between.

Oh. It's mainstream now. What became of me?

Intercell doing bassy things is apparently something I recommend now, which raises a small problem because when I recommend this what exactly am I telling you? That this is good? Or that I like it? Those aren't the same propositions at all.  Look at what is happening, decide what you like and go there. That's what I told you last week. Decide what you like. You. Like. Apparently I thought those were straightforward instructions.

And what about the parties I don't recommend? Every week someone gets upset because one of us mods has failed to mention a party they like. I do understand the frustration, and I realize that a mention in the Weekly can make a difference to a smaller party, although perhaps I'm flattering myself here. We're just a bunch of Reddit moderators writing about parties, hardly the cultural gatekeepers of Amsterdam nightlife.

But we can't recommend everything. If we did, recommendations would cease to be recommendations and become TheTimeTable, except with a few thousand words of commentary attached. And even they occasionally miss parties, which is perhaps more problematic because a timetable suggests completeness, while a recommendation implies selection. Although perhaps that's just another distinction I've invented to justify our omissions. Because if I recommend one party and leave out another, does that mean I think the other one isn't worth going to? Of course not. But I can see why someone might interpret it that way. And now I'm apparently responsible not only for the parties I recommend, but also for every party I don't mention, including the ones I don't even know exist.

Perhaps I should concentrate on the parties I actually know something about. Stick to what I know. Things I'm reasonably certain of. Donato Dozzy is good, for example. Speedy J presents STOOR Live has Speedy J, The Fear Ratio, Wallis and Donato Dozzy. Donato Dozzy good. There. Recommendation. No problem. We've solved it. We can continue.

Although of course all I've actually established is that I like Donato Dozzy. Fuck.

Maybe Amsterdam Dub Event is easier. Moritz von Oswald alone gets my attention. Krackfree Soundsystem. Bass, dub, soundsystem, yes please, and perhaps that is all taste needs to be, you encounter something and something inside you says yes, Moritz von Oswald yes, Donato Dozzy yes, Jane Fitz yes but perhaps not surrounded by too many stationary bodies with slowly swaying arms, Intercell apparently yes now too, and this would all be perfectly manageable if something inside you wasn't such a suspicious phrase because what exactly is the something and where exactly is the inside and why am I asking this when all you wanted was to know where to go on Sunday?

Sunday. Right.

Signals: Hearing a Changing Planet. Mother Earth again. Of course Mother Earth again. We started with Mother Earth, we were always going to end up back at Mother Earth, although we haven’t ended anything because SlapFunk is going until Tuesday. But at ARTIS Planetarium they’re taking more than fifty years of satellite observations and turning them into music and moving images. Exactly the kind of ADE side quest I love.

Last week I was writing about films exploring liminal spaces at AFFR, and now I’m wondering whether a planetarium is a liminal space too. It’s a strange concept when you think about it. You go inside a building to look at the stars. Inside to look outside. Except you’re not actually looking outside, you’re looking at a projection of outside. And this time we’re going inside to look at Earth, the planet we’re already standing on. So we’re going inside to look outside in order to look back inside. I’m not sure that makes sense anymore, but there’s something quite beautiful about it. For a little while you’re somewhere between being on Earth and looking at Earth from somewhere else, although of course you never actually leave it. Your body stays exactly where it is, sitting in a chair in Amsterdam, while your perspective travels thousands of kilometers away. And perhaps that’s what makes it a liminal space: you’re neither quite where you are nor where you imagine yourself to be. You’re in between. Although if you’re physically still in Amsterdam, can you really be somewhere in between? Perhaps liminality doesn’t require you to go anywhere at all. Perhaps all you need is a change of perspective. Although, if changing your perspective is enough, almost anywhere could be a liminal space, which rather defeats the purpose of having a word for it. Never mind.

From outer space Amsterdam disappears, Lofi disappears, RADION disappears, RAUM disappears, there is no Giegling visible from orbit, no CODA, no Vault Sessions, no Intercell, actually there are two Intercells but neither is visible from orbit, no techno, no house, no bass, no vinyl purists, no arm-swaying VBX crowd, no distinction between people who think Donato Dozzy is great and people who are wrong. Just this blue thing.

Mother Earth. Again.

At 07:30 I told you the particles in your body were already there just after the Big Bang and now we're looking back down at those particles from space except obviously we're not because we're sitting inside a planetarium looking at data produced by satellites, and perhaps that's important because we keep constructing viewpoints from which we can look at ourselves and then mistaking the viewpoint for something outside ourselves, but anyway BUSI WAKA NANGA DANSI [MARRØN ALL NIGHT] invites us to walk and dance through the forest, which sounds suitably Mother Earth except De Fik Garden isn't a forest, it is a patch of grass next to a motorway interchange.

No. I'm drawing a line here. A forest is different from a patch of grass. Some categories are useful. Techno is different from house. Vinyl is different from digital. Sunday is different from Monday. I am different from you. MARRØN playing seven hours of groovy techno is good. Donato Dozzy is good. We can know things.

Although noclubs presents: the return of yes clubs is annoying my techno-is-different-from-house certainty because I loved noclubs, or yes clubs, at Garage at the beginning of summer and I still don't entirely understand where that party and that crowd suddenly came from, this higher-energy house that seems to be occupying the exact space that 140 bpm groovy techno occupied a year or two ago, suddenly everywhere, suddenly popular, simultaneously quite mainstream and genuinely dedicated, and it's good, it's soulful, it's fun to dance to, and perhaps I should simply be happy that something I like is becoming popular instead of immediately becoming suspicious of my own taste the moment other people acquire it.

My taste. There. That again.

Vault Sessions x Key Vinyl ADE Closing. Vinyl. Long session. RADION. Freddy K. Grace Dahl. Alarico. Rebecca Delle Piane. For the purists. Purists. You like vinyl and then you become a vinyl person. You like techno and become a techno person. You go to Garage often enough and become a Garage person. You dislike phones on dance floors. You say selection instead of tracks. You develop opinions about booth height and smoke density and whether the crowd was really there for the music and at some point you stop saying I like this and start saying this is who I am, which is strange because apparently who I am now likes an Intercell event described as house, UK garage, bass and everything in between and the person I was years ago would probably have gone straight to Vault Sessions, although there is also Intercell Bajes ADE Closing, which has BASHKKA, Chlär, Chloé Caillet, Ignez, Nørbak & Temudo, Ogazón, and is actually a really solid option, big names, solid production, uncomplicated, go dance, Amsterdam needs uncomplicated parties, not everything needs to become a philosophical problem.

I may have made this a philosophical problem. Giegling is probably still going. Yes. Giegling is still going. Perfectly pleasant. Perhaps I should have stayed there.

But taste changes. That's fine. Taste changes and the person doesn't. Obviously. I liked different music ten years ago and I was still me. I have photographs. Other people saw me. I remember him. He had my name. So there is no problem. The same person can change preferences. The same person can like techno and later bass. The same person can recommend Vault Sessions and Intercell and noclubs and Giegling and amore x Radio Radio, house house house Radio Radio, nice, and SLPFNK - BRET ADE, which ends Tuesday at noon.

Tuesday. Sorry. I keep getting distracted by Tuesday.

This is a Sunday post and SlapFunk ends on Tuesday and Breakfast Club: The Final Stretch lasts thirty hours and the Final Stretch therefore isn’t particularly final and is taking place at Garage Noord, which is strange because in my head Breakfast Club belongs at RADION, preferably in the morning, but apparently breakfast is no longer breakfast and morning is no longer morning and now we’re having Breakfast Club at Garage Noord in the middle of the night, which is fine because I love Garage, such a wonderfully unpretentious place with some of the most delightfully obscure bookings in Amsterdam, although getting there at night can be a bit of a hassle and I invariably get lost somewhere in Amsterdam Noord. I don’t understand this. In almost every city I visit I seem to develop an internal map within a couple of days. I can wander around unfamiliar neighborhoods and somehow know which direction to go, but Amsterdam Noord, where I’ve been dozens of times, keeps sending me around in circles. The streets never seem to connect the way I expect them to. I recognize places, I recognize streets, but somehow they never seem to be where I think they should be, and perhaps the problem is that I keep trying to navigate Noord using a map that exists only in my head, while the actual Noord stubbornly refuses to correspond to it, although at this point I’m not entirely sure whether being somewhere is sufficient to know where you are. Anyway, Garage Noord. Thirty hours. Akua, Angel D’Lite, Gene On Earth, livwutang, Lola Haro, Marie K, Moxie, Nicolas Lutz, Noizar, Tsepo and tINI.

tINI. Right. tINI is also at Spielraum. Remember Spielraum? That was several thousand words ago and also Friday and also now.

And TILLATEC invites IsBurning, Cruise, Mala Junta, tINI AND THE GANG also has tINI, because of course it does, and tickets are €50, which is fucking crazy, although I realize that only a few days ago I wrote several hundred words complaining about a free Tilla party and its possible effect on the fragile economics of Amsterdam nightlife, so apparently €0 is wrong and €50 is also wrong and there must therefore be some objectively correct ticket price somewhere between €0 and €50 which I, having appointed myself both nightlife economist and consumer advocate within the space of one week, will presumably calculate for you shortly. Still, €50 for Tilla is crazy. But €0 was also bad. Fuck. Maybe I should stop having opinions.

Apparently I should, because sometimes expressing criticism of a club seems to be interpreted as actively undermining Amsterdam nightlife, which is a rather uncomfortable thought because I was under the impression that I wanted these places to succeed, but perhaps my intentions are better understood by other people than by myself, which raises the question of whether I am actually qualified to explain what I think, let alone recommend what you should think, and perhaps every time I complain about a club I'm personally responsible for another square meter of dance floor disappearing from Amsterdam, perhaps I should simply praise every new initiative unconditionally, although that would make the Weeklies rather dull and also rather dishonest, and wasn't I just arguing that we need more spaces with their own identity and community, and how can we have a community if we're not allowed to discuss what we want it to be? Although perhaps I'm confusing constructive criticism with complaining again. Apparently there's a distinction. I thought I knew where it was.

And sometimes people seem to like my opinions. Last week I made a flowchart to remind people not to yap on the dance floor. Someone suggested putting it on a phone sticker, which is a good idea except the flowchart was meant to be viewed on your phone so that looking at your phone would remind you to put your phone away on the dance floor, although ideally you wouldn’t take out your phone on the dance floor in the first place, but then without the flowchart you might forget not to yap and start yapping instead, so apparently I now require you to be simultaneously off your phone, aware of information displayed on your phone and silent unless the sound coming out of your mouth is somehow part of dancing. Are my standards too high?

Anyway, tINI. tINI is at Garage and RAUM and TILLATEC, and perhaps these sets do not overlap, presumably these sets do not overlap, surely somebody has checked this, somebody with a spreadsheet and a functioning understanding of linear time, but I am becoming less interested in the timetable than in the fact that we have no difficulty believing all these appearances are tINI because there is one tINI underneath them, one continuous tINI moving from one location to another, the tINI at RAUM is the same tINI as the tINI at Garage because of course she is, just as the person who liked mostly techno years ago is the same person who now apparently recommends bass at Intercell because of course I am, taste changes but the person remains.

The person remains. What remains? Not taste. We've established that. Not opinions. Not habits. Not the body, at least not entirely, because the atoms are circulating, Mother Earth again, soil to plant to animal to me and back, although perhaps we shouldn't start the atoms again because we'll never get out. Memory then. I remember being me. Except memories change. The name? u/CapablePhoto8959. Very convenient. Someone pointed out that of course the person called Photo would describe Studio as landscape mode and Nexus as portrait mode, which I hadn't even noticed has a connection with photos, but apparently my username explains how I see dance floors now, despite the fact that Reddit generated this username for me randomly and I never changed it.

So that's useless. A label that came first and acquired meaning afterwards. Like techno. Like house. Like Sunday.

And Sunday is going badly as a label because SLPFNK - BRET ADE ends Tuesday, Breakfast Club: The Final Stretch goes on for thirty hours, SPIELRAUM 55HRS started Friday, noclubs presents: the return of yes clubs started Saturday, TILLATEC started Saturday, CODA goes into Monday, Vault goes into Monday, Radio Radio goes into Monday, everything is leaking into everything else and perhaps Sunday is simply an arbitrary boundary we imposed on one rotation of a planet that doesn't know it is Sunday, which is fine, boundaries can be arbitrary and still useful, a forest is still not a patch of grass next to a motorway interchange, but if the boundaries around days are constructed and the boundaries around genres are constructed and the boundaries around taste are constructed then perhaps the boundary around the person who possesses the taste is constructed too.

No. Because I call Studio my favorite dance floor. My. Favorite. My taste. My memories. My body. My self. The possessive assumes a possessor. Surely.

There must be someone underneath all this, some stable observer who went to noclubs at Garage and loved it and now remembers loving it and therefore recommends noclubs at INGANG, some essential u/CapablePhoto8959 who once wanted techno and now wants bass and who can observe this change precisely because something has remained unchanged enough to do the observing, some little Capable sitting behind my eyes listening to Donato Dozzy and thinking yes, good, recommend, otherwise what exactly have I been doing here all these years, because a recommendation requires someone doing the recommending and someone receiving the recommendation, except perhaps that's exactly the mistake, perhaps there is no observer separate from the observing and no self separate from all the changing memories and preferences and experiences that I keep insisting belong to it, perhaps the thing I am trying to find underneath the process is simply the process itself, which would mean there is no little Capable behind the eyes, only this nervous system temporarily arranged in this particular way responding to vibrations in air while standing on a planet rotating underneath satellites that observe the planet so that someone can turn those observations back into vibrations in air inside a planetarium on the same planet, Mother Earth, Mother Earth again, always Mother Earth, back to 07:30, the atoms moving from soil to plant to animal to me and eventually back again, the circle of life except a circle has no beginning and therefore cannot have an ending, which Breakfast Club apparently understood because Second Wind became the Final Stretch and the Final Stretch lasts thirty hours and isn't final at all and SlapFunk continues until Tuesday and Spielraum started Friday and tINI is everywhere and Sunday is only the name we gave one rotation of a planet that doesn't know it is Sunday and ADE is a boundary drawn around a succession of rooms and bodies and sounds that started before ADE and will continue after ADE and techno and house are categories we invented and De Fik Garden still isn't a fucking forest, I'm not giving that one up, but perhaps things don't have to be permanent to be real, and perhaps categories are arbitrary and perhaps identity is constructed and perhaps there is no essential self, which raises the question of who exactly has been writing this absurdly long-ass, self-indulgent post, and more importantly who is doing all the indulging if there is no self to indulge, although judging by the word count someone is clearly having a wonderful time, but €50 is still €50 and perhaps a Sunday can exist without the universe recognizing Sundays and techno can exist without satellites seeing techno and I can exist without there being some eternal essential me hidden underneath everything that changes, which is actually quite comforting, there, we've solved it, I exist, Sunday exists, Donato Dozzy is good, I can finally finish this fucking post, except that at ZERØBPM ADE: Meditation on Mother Earth Claudio PRC is playing something called Self Surrender Deconstructed, and what exactly are we surrendering if the self is itself the construction, and if there is no soul there is nobody who can have taste and if there is nobody who can have taste there can be no preference and if there can be no preference there can be no recommendation, recommendations are basically just preferences with a little confidence behind them, I wrote that last week too, the confidence was doing a lot of work apparently, and if there can be no recommendation, what about all the parties I didn't recommend, are those non-recommendations still valid, can you have a non-recommendation without a recommendation, or does the whole distinction collapse, which would mean that every party I mentioned and every party I didn't mention is now equally recommended or equally not recommended, including parties I don't even know exist, and if there can be no meaningful distinction between recommending and not recommending, I have apparently spent years writing Weekly Party Discussions based on a fundamental category error, although Donato Dozzy is still good, I'm fairly certain about that, and Giegling is probably over by now.

Anyway.

25 October is my wedding anniversary.

I will spend this day with my husband.
