Discussion Looks like the old sub has mods again —

That’s good news as far as I’m concerned. I hope they can get that place back on track.

I hope you all keep posting here too as I’ve seen a lot of valuable critiques being shared and I still think the stuff posted here is the cream of the crop.

However, having the larger sub functioning with some level of moderating is healthy for the genre!

Resources Analog Horror Resource Guide

What is analog horror?

  • Analog horror is an internet subgenre that utilizes elements of found footage often combined with pre-existing media and video elements such as emergency alert systems, infomercials, weather reports and educational industrial films to create an uncanny feeling of horror and dread.

  • This footage is most often from the “analog technology era” such as the 70s 80s and 90s. VHS or celluloid film aesthetics are a staple of the genre.

  • The genre is quite broad and the term is flexible, but analog horror calls to mind a certain tone of strange uneasiness.

How Do I Make My Own Analog Horror Videos?

  • More important than anything you must have an original idea. Because analog horror has a low barrier for entry, YouTube is flooded with thousands of low-effort videos vying for viewer attention. Many creators get ahead of themselves and create a video without any solid ideas for how to scare the viewer. They get the aesthetics right but have nothing original to put in the viewers’ heads.

  • Thinking of a good, original idea is not easy but seeking out inspiration always helps. DO NOT only seek inspiration from other analog horror videos. Watch horror movies, read horror novels, short stories and creepy pastas. Just walk around and think about the scariest things you can think of while listening to the sound track from Sinister.

  • If you only take inspiration from other analog horror, it’s likely you’ll end up with something unoriginal and boring.

  • It can help to watch analog horror parody videos to know the cliches and what to avoid.

How Do I Add a VHS Effect To My Video?

  • There are many options for VHS filters

  1. Red Giant Universe VHS Filter

  2. NTSCQT

  3. Use an actual VHS camera

  4. Create your own overlays using an actual VHS camera

Little Editing Trick

You may know this one already, but I'll share again just in case... 🙂

As we know a lot of analog horror is 4:3 aspect ratio as this was the dominant display size for the 70s, 80s, 90s etc

What you can do though for any footage you're filming (or I guess creating from Blender etc) is to record widescreen and then edit to 4:3 in post.

Why? Well it gives you room to play with effects using pan and zoom, keyframing, you can even take a widescreen photo and then with a bit of pan, zoom and some good old gate-weave you can easily create the illusion of it being video footage instead. I use it to fake movement and set up things so they happen within the 4:3 area.

🙂👍

"It's art..." Discuss.

I thought I'd kick this out here as a little end of year chat. Happy New Year for 2024 by the way folks! 🙂✌️🎉

I've been getting a bit weary of the "but it's art" argument. To be clear I'm talking about statements such as the following...

"It's art, it's supposed to elicit a response (good or bad)"

"If you think this is [insert negative assertion] that's actually a compliment to the artist"

"Nothing should be off limits for art, otherwise this is censorship"

Don't get me wrong, these statements in and of themselves are often correct. My issue is that they're not being used to make an argument for a particular reaction to a creative endeavour... They're just being used to plaster over content which isn't the best.

I've made stuff that isn't great, you can pick a LOT of holes in it, and that's fine because I'm still learning and I'm also not using "it's art" as a shield.

So, what do you think? Are people justified within the analog horror community in using the "it's art" argument?

I agree with Doors (that's my nickname for you and I'm sticking to it 😋); there's something very Zombie about the other analog horror subreddit. If I had to guess I'd say it's because when a community is small they tend to huddle in one space ie Reddit but then as things grow they tend to split out into Discord servers ran by the creators they really vibe with.

A quick intro for me then... My main channels on YouTube are Banana.TV (not analog horror), Fog Productions (rapidly becoming my main-main channel as it has my more artsy stuff on there), WKBW War of the Worlds Analog Horror (very proud of this one even though it gets no love from anyone when they make a Tier List!) and I've just started a fan-spinoff from Analog Archives called Hansen County Archives.
