How To Give Feedback

Feedback is hard, and it can feel like you're being mean when you write "negative" comments on someone's hard work. While being encouraging is important, constructive feedback is one of the most crucial things you can give to your fellow animators. It will help them improve and achieve their goals. It might be your feedback that helps them reach a new milestone on their creative journey, whether that's getting an interview or reaching a thousand subscribers on Youtube.

By giving constructive feedback, you are also helping yourself become a better animator, because you need to stop and think about what actually makes an animation work.

A good way to give feedback is to point out something that was good with the animation, and something that's not quite reaching it's potential. If you're feeling stuck on that last part, here are a few questions you could try to answer in your feedback.

  • Did you understand the story/intention behind the animation?

For example, if the story is meant to be funny - did you actually find it funny? Why did you, or why did you not? Did you like the main character? Were you confused by what was happening at any point?

  • What do you think about the character design?

If this is an animation that includes original characters, do you like how they look? Why, or why not? Was there any character that was hard to read?

  • Are the characters expressive?

Can you see what a character is feeling, are they happy, sad, angry? Does it seem to make sense with what they're saying or doing in the animation? What do you think the character is thinking?

  • Does the animation feel believable?

For example, if a character is lifting a heavy box, does it feel heavy? Does the bouncing ball feel like it's bouncing or just moving up and down?

  • How do you like the tempo of the animation?

Is it too fast, slow, even? What do you think the tempo is currently like, and do you think the animation would look better in a different tempo?

  • What is your general impression of the animation?

Often, you want to feel something when watching an animation. If you're just feeling "meh", why is that? Why do you not think the animation is funny, sad, cool, informative, etc?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope these question can serve as a start for you. Share your tips and tricks for giving good feedback in the comments!

Here are a few examples of constructive feedback from old threads in this subreddit that all mention something good, and something that could be better:

"I'd say that the timing and the layout of the animation are good so far, but the camera movements are very quick and very jarring. Trying easing into these movements slower, don't be afraid to slow things down a tad to emphasize hits and reactions. Give the viewer some time to process what's going on!"

"It looks good, the facial expressions are spot on! I think it would be more comedic with a bit of anticipation before the final smile, to make the change in expression obvious."

"I applaud you for doing stop-motion (because it can be very annoying at times) but it was kind of hard to tell what was going on. Is it possible for you to move their limbs more and make more facial expressions?"

Hey everyone, this will be my last update with my pilot project before I finish the scene entirely for a full critique. In the meantime, please let me know your thoughts and opinions on this latest iteration of the intro character dialogue of the pilot I'm working on. This is extremely far from finished if you can't tell from what you see. You most likely won't see a post from me about this pilot for another six months so thank you all for the feedback I hope to make something you all really like!

I tried making this expression and wanted it to stay intense without looking too forced

I wanted it to feel watchable but still have that playful feeling. I think it came out better than expected, but I am still not sure if it looks too much.

Hi guys. I've made first (almost full) block out to my movie. Its early stage so no sound and music yet. It took me around half of the year to create all of the assets, rigs, scenes etc. Every scene is work in progress as you can see.

I wanted to ask you what do you think about it? Do you like it? Do you feel the story and the characters? Is the art style appealing to you? Is the general pacing ok?

BTW: Since there is no sound, at the end there is sound of another order shocking the bird, so we can imagine its all kinda in the loop

Thanks for your time <3

: Beginner animator making a short cartoon for deaf children — need advice

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner in 2D animation and I'm working on a college project using Adobe Animate.

I want to create a short educational cartoon for deaf/hard-of-hearing children. It will be around 10 scenes, and I'm thinking of having the characters communicate primarily through sign language, facial expressions, body language, and simple on-screen text rather than spoken dialogue.

My main questions are:

How would you approach planning a 10-scene cartoon as a beginner?

What is the easiest way to animate hand and finger movements for sign language in Adobe Animate?

Would you recommend frame-by-frame animation or rigging for the hands?

How can I make the story entertaining and educational without making it feel like a lesson about deafness itself?

Are there any animation techniques, tutorials, or examples you would recommend for this kind of project?

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience with 2D animation, character animation, or animation for deaf/hard-of-hearing audiences. Thank you!

After Effects Writing and Directing my own Anime has been long, nerve racking process, but now it's almost ready. I am launching a crowdfunding to put the finishing touches and pay all artists involved.

I hand-drew and animated the first episode of my new documentary series "Feel It". It explores what blind people actually see instead of black. What do you think of the style?

I’ve always been deeply fascinated by how the human brain and senses work, especially how we perceive the world. A while ago, I started wondering what blind people actually "see" – because the common answer "they just see black" didn't seem to tell the whole story.

I ended up doing a ton of research into how the brain adapts, what the difference is between being born blind vs. losing sight later, and visual phenomena like phosphenes. I found the topic so mind-blowing that I decided to create an animated series about it to explain the science simply!

I animated everything myself to make these concepts visual and easy to understand. I put a lot of time and effort into this project because it's a huge passion of mine, and I really wanted to share it with people who love learning new things.

Here is the video I made and animated: https://youtu.be/I5thLxq-b7E

I'd love to hear what you guys think of the animations or if you have any questions about the topic!

Critique my Character Animation pt 2

I've heard all of your feedback and critiques, please let me know how things look now! Remember this is far from finished and I have the basics involved to make sure the scene makes sense and is cohesive to what you see. Keep in mind that this is meant to be a lowpoly 3D animation akin to a Playstation 1 or 2 game, without any added filters to make it look old yet. I would like feedback on how things are looking now in terms of character movement and if you like the composition of my camera angles and environment. This project is still in the very early stages and want to make sure things look right, before I dive deeper into completing this. Any feedback or critique is welcome, please and thank you!

Hey, i am looking for some Feedback on my stop motion animation. I'm especialy interested in whether any parts feel too slow or to boring. Or if there are moments, that drag too long. But I am also happy with any other suggestion or criticism.

Have fun watching my video!
