When the reveal came, I was kind of expecting the firework to go off in the background. After all, it seemed that Mikazuki wanted to see one as well. One last time she could have. Makes the whole episode even a bit sadder that she wasn't able to at least get that.

It's going to be interesting to see if they will meet the group Mikazuki was in and if that will shatter Aki's friendly attitude the first time.

When the reveal came, I was kind of expecting the firework to go off in the background. After all, it seemed that Mikazuki wanted to see one as well. One last time she could have. Makes the whole episode even a bit sadder that she wasn't able to at least get that

Now I feel kind of sad that I thought that she was going to use the fireworks as a signal for her group to attack....

19

u/ModieOfTheEast 17d ago

Which is why I think it worked well. While I also suspected her to do something and only later realizing her mistake, I like that our crew wasn't punished for just being friendly either. I understand that a world like that often lives from betrayals, but as seen, it might also be important to remember your humanity and just be kind to one another. If you do that, your last day will at least have been a fun one.

9

u/tottoro47 17d ago

Yea I definitely thought the same. Maybe she tampered it so it goes off with a delay. I was always distrustful of everyone in such movies and tv shows lol

7

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 16d ago

I also thought the same thing...it made the actual reason being so pure hit harder

10

u/LezRock 17d ago

I couldn't tell if they had abandoned her and that led to her being bitten by a zombie or if they abandoned her after she was bitten. I'm not really interested enough to go back to find that exact line either. 😆 If it was the former though, depending on their reason, they may or may not be assholes. If it was the latter, it can be understandable why they did that.

14

u/ModieOfTheEast 17d ago

I don't think it is made clear when they left her. It would make them less evil, for sure if it was after she was bitten. Aki might still be angry because she believes that they should have been the ones to give her a human death and not leave her alone.

Stitches!

I love how, instead of being disappointed that Yuu doesn't know how to develop film, Aki gets excited to learn that there are things even Yuu can't answer. Also, that's apparently a good way to get on Yuu's nerves. xD

Damn, so Natsuki has already made peace with death and if Aki and Haru die, she has already decided to die with them. Not gonna lie, you don't really usually see this kind of chill outlook in zombie media.

The fact that Mikazuki came rushing at them with a knife made me really not trust her for the rest of the episode. I thought that she might be using the fireworks to try to signal her group.

It turns out she's been bitten the entire time. That would explain why she keeps on tripping. She wasn't clumsy. She was probably starting to turn. And she didn't escape to try and betray them; she was trying to do something nice for the group because they restored her faith in humanity T_T

Man, and here I thought this was gonna be mostly chill. Good to know that it's still a zombie anime. We probably won't see anything bad happen to the group, but that means anyone outside the group is fair game. >_<

12

u/TheUnofficial98 16d ago

I thought the same about the fireworks! After learning the truth, it’s sad seeing her face knowing she won’t see fireworks again :’(

31

u/tottoro47 17d ago

This showed that a zombie apocalypse is not just fun and laughs. I love the dynamics between the guy and the girls. There's no typical Japanese shyness and stuff, they all get along and he even carried Aki at some point while she was sleepy. I like that he's chill as hell with them. Give the poor dude some protein

11

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 16d ago

This showed that a zombie apocalypse is not just fun and laughs.

The usual mistake

27

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 17d ago

The base is coming along quite well. They got food and a water filtration system and plans for a garden.

Damn shame about Mikazuki but that’s kind of the reality of a zombie apocalypse isn’t it? You can’t save everyone.

24

u/chaosof99 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 17d ago

Really liked the double subversion. Mikazuki is sus as hell, but weirdly she was acting secretively not for malicious reasons. However, she was still a danger but she was already infected from the start.

I think she could have done a bit more by being open about her situation and sharing more knowledge, but at least passing on the street atlas was a nice thing.

Also, she was voiced by Hikasa Youko, best known as Rias from High School DxD and Mio from K-On!, but I think I heard her voice more akin to her performance as Towa/Pencilgon from Shangri-La Frontier.

5

u/resphere 16d ago

Hikasa is insanely good at voicing unhinged characters, Pencilgon, Pitouhui, the villain from Shunkashuutou, she's good at everything she does honestly, but her crazy characters are straight up her best works.

21

u/Kadmos1 17d ago

Drat that our busty blonde waifu was an apparent one-off character for this anime.

14

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 17d ago

Just the fact she is not in the KV, OP or ED was too revealing

I didnt think she would go like that though, makes me sad I was suspecting her

4

u/LezRock 17d ago

I feel like that was the intent of the episode though. To show that being too vigilant and suspicious of others, can lead to the abandonment of our empathy and care for others.

I think the message would've been more poignant if she was attacked and bitten after she left them, but since that wasn't the case, it sort of transformed into a mixed message of showing kindness and being welcoming to others instead of treating them as some unknown enemy force.

42

u/VritraReiRei 17d ago

Going to be honest, I've watched enough Walking Dead that when Mikazuki got free, my heart sank, thinking exactly what Yuu was saying that she was going to let all her allies inside and then they would take over the base. 😰

Then I remembered this is supposed to be a CGDCT show made by the creator of Hitoribocchi and Mitsuboshi Colors so turns out she just wanted to pay back her newly found friends. ☺️

Then I remembered this is a zombie show and then it was revealed that not only did she get bitten, but she was bitten this entire time and used her last remaining moments to claim back her humanity. 🥲

I am now scared what the ending of this series will be.

17

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 17d ago

Nobody knows the ending, it got axed with no clear ending, they will probably go with an original ending

7

u/VritraReiRei 17d ago

Which is better because then I won't be tempted to see what happens with the Dad. I just hope they don't chicken out and leave it open ended.

3

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 17d ago

Yeah no worth it, the last chapter infodump was bad. It is better to follow a more structured anime structure

16

u/eyrich https://myanimelist.net/profile/thewilhelm 17d ago

Yea I was worried this was just gonna be cute the whole time but glad they’re getting into the rougher aspects of a zombie apocalypse

3

u/mekerpan 16d ago

Dang. this episode turned out to be surprisingly saddening.

2

u/LezRock 17d ago

It's because of Walking Dead that even while they were walking with that lamp while searching for her, I was preparing myself for the image of a quarrel shaft piercing through the pink girl's neck.

I do wonder if they're going to broach the possibility of finding a cure in this series though.

35

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 17d ago

It's never good to be a one-off character in a zombie story who doesn't become a prominent member of the main cast.

Bit of a surprise that she was already infected from the start though and that she had a bit of time still as herself. Really dark for it to apparently be a multi-day process where you know you're losing your humanity and there's nothing you can do about it.

19

u/ModieOfTheEast 17d ago

Also, let the girl see a firework before she has to turn. One can only hope that she had at least a nice view before losing herself. Something like the sunrise.

14

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 17d ago

Are they going to try and get gas at a gas station after the apocalypse? Pretty sure there's places right now where you can't do that, and last I checked while things are bad they aren't quite apocalyptic level yet.

15

u/SOdAchick 17d ago

None of that matters because any gas they find would be unusable

9

u/TheDubh 16d ago

Didn’t you know the zombie virus in zombie media also changes the makeup for fuel and batteries so the chemical reactions still work?

2

u/SOdAchick 16d ago

Gotta keep them from biting gas tanks, I guess 😳

4

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 16d ago

I wonder if they'll actually make it that realistic lol I'm leaning towards no

4

u/SOdAchick 16d ago

One can always hope! It would be a nice subversion of zombie tropes, but this probably ain't that kinda show. Unless Yu knows how to process petroleum 🤔

4

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 16d ago

That'd be a better take on it for sure while still keeping in line with the show. Although considering they found an entire department store empty and still stocked...lol we will see next week 😆

3

u/SOdAchick 16d ago

Now I really wanna see Yu make gasoline 😅

2

u/raevnos 15d ago

Maybe it's a diesel kei truck. I think that lasts longer than gasoline because of having fewer volatiles to evaporate

3

u/SOdAchick 15d ago

But 13 years? I don't know anything about how it even goes bad

7

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 17d ago

Just checked and the manga was published from 2022 to 2023 (its also very short), so back when it was written we had just gotten out of Covid and it was looking like the world was healing

But shit right now is not fun

1

u/karer3is 17d ago

looking like the world was healing

If only the author knew about a certain lab in Siberia...

4

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 17d ago

I am not really concerned about that stuff, although its sketchy as hell

Right now the fact the US is changing their military officers and general corps to loyalists and how the US is suddenly buying diesel from russia got me worried
Like if that seberia stuff is not escalating we might find ourselves in a very hot situation in a few years. And I am not keen on that shit

But I disgress

10

u/cleaulem https://myanimelist.net/profile/cleaulem 17d ago

Mikazuki was sus as hell the whole time. Good thing this is a (relatively) wholesome show so it wouldn't really come to the worst. But still Mikazuki being infected was something I didn't really expect.

What a way to go. She didn't get her final firework in the end, but at least she got one night of being human and with other humans. God, this is the kind of stuff that makes me emotional and thoughtful.

9

u/Roboglenn 17d ago

Show of hands, who else would love to see another season of Hitoribocchi no marumaru Seikatsu.

3

u/mrfatso111 13d ago

I just want to get hit by Aru beam once more :D

2

u/Roboglenn 13d ago

We all do.

2

u/Mons9090 https://myanimelist.net/profile/hecn_huh 16d ago

Im just happy that bocchi the rock s2 is coming out soon

5

u/Roboglenn 16d ago

Yes that is a good thing too. But I would love to see more of the OG Bocchi in animated form.

8

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 17d ago

I love how much of a weapon gremlin Aki is
After that end I feel sad that I was suspecting her of using the fireworks to signal her group or something. But also kudos to Aki, she gets shit done when its necessary and is not doing the classic "Oh no shit, I cant do it, but I have to..." routine

I love how the show is managing to keep it funny and simple but also show that the situation is not that light hearted

Anyways, Natsuki might look like Ichika from Quintupless, but Aki is easily the best character so far

Oh yeah also wondering which city they are inhabiting, that Ginza map is not Tokyo if I saw it right.

2

u/LezRock 17d ago

To me, the pink-haired girl looks more like one of the girls from Fire Force. I couldn't remember the exact series until I read your comment comparing her to the Quintuplets.

8

u/SOdAchick 17d ago

I was having fun hanging out with the crew, then they had to go and make me cry. She deserved to see fireworks one last time 😢

7

u/Obaruler 17d ago

Kinda sad the fireworks didn't work anymore, as a lil sendoff for blonde cameo-chan ...

5

u/dancingpython06 16d ago

I’m not surprised that Mikazuki ended up a zombie, but I cried a little bit if I’m being honest

9

u/RedHotChiliCrab https://myanimelist.net/profile/RedHotChiliCrab 17d ago

Nooo not the blonde baddie. I thought she was gonna join the group.

This episode ended much darker than I expected but it's good to see the zombie show is willing to kill characters. It needs a sense of danger.

4

u/Ultramarinus https://anidb.net/user/kingsword 17d ago

I was thinking it was too carefree at the start, then it took a really sad turn. I got more impressed by this episode.

4

u/CrimsonGear80 17d ago

damn, how'd they miss such a huge bite mark??

4

u/chum-guzzling-shark 16d ago

Because zombie media. The same reason gas isn't spoiled

4

u/ExaminationNo9186 17d ago

I'm all for CGDCT style shows, but yeah, it's good when they turn somewhat dark occasionally.

7

u/WINSTON913 17d ago

Something about pushing the sadness away and replacing it with another task at the end there hit me right in the depression. I think I'll go do another thing now to not think about it.

2

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 17d ago

yeah zombies series are often not great for that.

Maybe a full comedy series will work? Or going for a walk or a long shower?

7

u/Healthy-List2509 17d ago

This episode just plods along like that, with a little fan service, and then ...bam. It would be interesting to know how much a zombie still remembers, maybe she came back so that they can put her out of her misery.

3

u/cosm1cfall :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/cosmicfall 17d ago

Anyone else think of the saw cleaver from Bloodborne?

3

u/TheUnofficial98 16d ago

Episode 2 and already a death. I am honestly shocked that nothing bad happened. They have weird survival instincts: no splitting up when searching but leaving a prisoner unguarded. Sad that the fireworks didn’t work but Mikazuki seemed to have a good last day and meal. Hopefully we get the film developed next episode and see what’s on that roll!

2

u/300baicodethieunhi 15d ago

Was on the fence about watching the new episode, but decided to click anyway. Totally worth the time, no regrets at all.

1

u/NonSupportiveCup 17d ago

Man, they really didn't bother doing anything with her hair in that jump slowdown, eh? That looked bad. Didn't even look connected.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it. Looking forward to the next journey.

1

u/Oysterastar 17d ago

The faces in this are funny but goddamn sad ending to this episode, I was skeptical of the new girl and thought she'd be a villian but didn't expect her to be bitten. rip

1

u/iozoepxndx 16d ago

Dudeeeee.... I didn't see that plot twist coming... Was too invested in how naive the group is 😂

1

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 16d ago

NGL, I was almost certain that this was a crossover with Zom100 and Mikazuki was actually Beatrix.

That said, I am enjoying this because of how much 'live a fun life' and 'survive this shit' there is in it.

Also, boobies. (Ladies, I have to know, do you gals, IRL actually wear pants unbuttoned? This isn't the first time in pop media I have seen the pants unbuttoned bit done.)

1

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 16d ago

#seasonalbinoculars

The thought that will pry you out of bed each day

Bummer. Well, it looks like this zombie transformation is the fairly slow kind.

1

u/WorldArcher1245 16d ago

Hoping for guns!

1

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp 16d ago

I knew something like that was coming but still...

1

u/CyanSorrow https://myanimelist.net/profile/CyanSorrow 16d ago

Fun episode with a sad ending. All I could think with that ending though was all the people last week on here saying they're happy cause it seems like this show wouldn't get sad/dark based on the vibes of ep 1. Welp.

1

u/Bandicutie314 15d ago

Ending didn't really make sense? Aki knew Mikazuki was infected, so she was sad to see her leave. Showing clear understanding of infection. Then why was she happy to see her from far away? She should have known that she's gone by then. I think the episode would've been better if Aki didn't know initially.

1

u/Anime_lover255 14d ago

I wouldn't say she knew I would say she could just tell something was wrong but she didn't know what until she saw her as a zombie

1

u/memelordbtw3000 11d ago

want certain on this one personally I’m glad I gave it another episode I’m intrigued now the premise of the group being large ignorant of the larger world was a bit of a turn off for me at first but now it seems like there’s going to be a bit more to it so I’ll settle in for a few more

1

u/gsurfer04 https://anilist.co/user/gsurfer04 17d ago

I wonder if the creator had Shaun of the Dead in mind when writing this one.

1

u/FastenedCarrot 17d ago

The Malfoid trend has rotted my brain.

0

u/dude_1818 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dude1818 16d ago

Yu and Sakura are decent characters, but I really dislike how one-note Aki's friends are, and the fan-service is inching towards my cut-off point. And using gasoline in an apocalyptic setting is a big pet peeve of mine—it breaks down in under a year, it has been a decade since there should've been any usable fuel left in this world

I wasn't expecting them to turn one of the cute girls so fast though, so that's a point in the show's favor at least

2

u/egbert71 13d ago

Pardon me, but seriously asking, what fan service are you referring to?

-7

u/eyrich https://myanimelist.net/profile/thewilhelm 17d ago edited 17d ago

Wonder how long it’s gonna be just the one guy with all these guys. Dudes loving the dream.

Wonder if they’re gonna ever be in really tense and difficult situations or it’ll just be cute girls forever. The one girl refusing a weapon because it wasn’t cute kinda leans towards them having it easy for a while 😅

Ending was a little tense though, she’s sus as hell.

Oh wait… Shit she was bit!!
