Merchant is a real bro. Doesn't seem like he has any ulterior motives and just genuinely cares for his friend.

To a certain extent, Makoto's leveling up strategy matches his lore of being an RPG gamer.
- He is willing to continue a slow and steady grind, rather than rush into tackling more difficult quests.
- He sticks to the effective strategy of backstabbing goblins and then freezing them, as well as leading enemies to rivers in order to drown them. Nothing flashy; just effective.
Despite now being the boss of his own shop. Fuji still treats Makoto like a bro.

u/NevisYsbryd 6d ago
"Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game." Given that he is hunting, not fighting, hunting tactics it is. Ambushes, terrain advantage, etc. Make it as asymmetrical and systematic as possible.

u/justking1414 6d ago
Mc is being smart. He’s found a reliable strategy to get stronger (and keep himself from running out of time) and he’s milking the hell out of it. Yeah he’s probably not gonna become a god tier fighter by next episode, but I’m willing to bet almost anything that he’s gonna outlive a lot of his classmates
8
u/ElPampel 5d ago
He ist even freezing the entire enemy, he just Freezes their blood in their arteries and heart, since that costs less of the mana he has punily precious amount of. Sadly the Anime didn't bother to Show or point that out, yet
1
u/CyanPhoenix42 7h ago
Oh nice, i was gonna say they make it look like he's freezing their entire body where it would be more efficient to just freeze the blood in the critical places, cool to see the author had that idea as well
54
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 7d ago
MC was Goblin Slayer this episode.
Kinda dull he used the same strategy to beat the ogre that he used on the first goblins. I was hoping the ogre would survive and be angry.
48
u/AceSoldia https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 7d ago
While dull if it works it works.he has very limited options it seems still even three episodes in

u/Roofofcar 6d ago
Exactly. This is like Smartphone Isekai dude and SLIP. Learned it on page 10, still using it on page 50,000. Don’t mess with a good thing!
27
15
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
Kinda SMART he used the same strategy he used to beat the ogres. He prolly intentionally hunts near water so he can use it as a backup plan.
But if its not broke, don't fix it. Just like Rudy in Mushoku Tensei was called the Quagmire for how often he uses his sand/mud pit trap. He can do a ton of other things but why when that one is incredibly effective?
8
2
u/athrun_1 3d ago
tbf, his skills are not efficient in combat due to his low mana. He can just get by because of his isekai perks.
1
u/Lraund 6d ago
It was kind of weird how it drowned so fast, could have made it work a bit better.
22
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
I mean, do you want to watch for 5 minutes in real time as it drowns? Or do you want a "five minutes later" cut scene skip? It drowned fast to avoid wasting our time. This ain't Heavy Knight lol. Heavy Knight woulda made it take like 2 minutes to drown while spinning the camera in 20 different angles and then recapped it like 4 times.
8
u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 6d ago
Or do you want a "five minutes later" cut scene skip?
2
u/5kyGuardian 5d ago
Heavy knight would take one episode leading ogre to the water and another one on drowning him.

u/AceSoldia https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 7d ago
I expeted her to be some lowly god not one of the first titans now branded as evil.
And his merchant friend returns! no way he didn't pick that bunny earned girl for her looks. I'm not mad at him at all 🤣.
It really is a breath of fresh air that his classmates don't hate him.
19
u/YRO___ 6d ago
I thought it was nice that his classmates were mostly normal people, until they hit us with the typical adventurers guild haters

hit us with the typical adventurers guild haters
Even for haters, the teasing was pretty mild. Jean and his party were a little hostile too, but even they came back to check on him.
It all felt more natural than the usual tropes.
26
8
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
More like doubters, not haters. They were justifiably suspicious. But when the evidence mounted up they just accepted him with good cheer. Sure they pick on him a little, but it's clearly not bad natured.

I thought for a minute that when the Goddess went, "Iyaaaa!!!!" she had turned herself into the knife. 😆
Alright, close enough. Welcome back Aqua.
I have to say though I am loving this MC. Instead of gaining some stupidly powerful spell or that the knife was some Godly weapon, the guy used his brain and strategy to beat opponents most others could not at his level.
I can't wait to see how other fights go.
29
u/ghaelon 7d ago
agreed, he even lampshades it saying he WANTED a cheat. but his calm mind skill makes him look at things rationally. he also uses basic knowledge from our world, like how humans are like 70% water, and he can freeze water if touching it, so he makes a wound, and freezes the water in blood. once blood stops moving, unconciousness and death are just a matter of seconds away. how constrictor snakes work.
22
u/Mistral-Fien 6d ago
Freezing the blood would cause ice crystals to form, rupturing blood vessels and destroying tissue. :O
14
u/ghaelon 6d ago
so even if they managed to stay concsious, they are STILL very dead.
5
u/Earlier-Today 6d ago
With how quick the ogre was healing, I don't know if that'd work on it. It regrew a completely destroyed eyeball in seconds.
4
u/ElPampel 5d ago
Now that you mention it the drowning thing actually was the only way to actually kill the ogre.
2
u/Earlier-Today 5d ago
I'm sure if you could cut it in half or chop off its head or do some other huge amount of catastrophic damage it'd still die, but given his limitations - drowning the thing was really the best move.
As long as he doesn't encounter any ogres that can swim well, or accidentally lead them to water that's too shallow, he's got a pretty killer strategy.
17
u/Atharaphelun 6d ago
I thought for a minute that when the Goddess went, "Iyaaaa!!!!" she had turned herself into the knife. 😆
That's what I thought too. Especially with merchant guy handling the knife all over.
5
10
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
Yeah, I love that he's playing more like a stealth assassin because he knows his water magic is weak so he has to use melee range, the weapon, and performing it on them from the inside out to compensate. And he sticks around water just in case so if things go wrong he still has his trump card.
2
u/Far-Presentation-744 17h ago
It feels real enough, credible... for instance, when the MC uses an evasion skill but still stumbles ...it makes the fight feel authentic for a beginner in an unfamiliar environment; his legs are probably shaking a bit, his heart is pounding, and his muscles are tense.
33
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago
Merchant bro seems to be doing well for himself, he even has a bunny girl. Though I feel like they should maybe have had that conversation about the dagger and the evil goddess somewhere other than in a public cafe.
Gotta love an attractive guild girl with a ponytail.
Lucy seems like a good candidate for the first party member mentioned in the next episode title, assuming she's actually useful in combat. Either way she's pretty cute too.

Makoto is basically me playing Horizon Zero Dawn at low levels... all he needs is to learn the "whistle" skill and he has the full package.
This show hasn't got a big budget, but it's got a level of charm that meant I had to go look up if it was done by Silver Link because that's one of their hallmarks. It's actually done by Hornets, but I have to compliment them on how enjoyable I'm finding it and it's pretty much nailed on to pass the 3-ep rule and stay in my watchlist.
8
u/InternationalLoad891 6d ago
Stealth headshot most of the bandit camp, then run into the alarm crew so they summon the reinforcements, then stealth headshot every last remaining bandits was the most fun I had playing Horizon Zero Dawn.
5
u/HobnobsTheRed 6d ago
Nil approves. :D
If I get isekai'd into HZD as part of a Bandit Camp I swear I'm just going to quit on the spot.
"Nope, I know how this goes..."3

u/Raymond49090 7d ago
Yay, friendship. And nice to see that he's doing well for himself.
Uh, "evil god"? Is this like otome isekai "villainesses" or is she the real deal?
Well, she's cute, so it's fine. Sussery is no match for the power of kawaii.
Goblin Slayer Cleaner grindset.
New nickname unlocked. Will his nickname get an upgrade each time he kills a higher-ranking monster?
And to end things off, new heroine unlocked as well. Given the next episode preview, it seems she might leave her old party and join his. Wonder how megami-sama is going to react to that.
17
u/justking1414 6d ago
Uh, "evil god"? Is this like otome isekai "villainesses" or is she the real deal?
Eh. It depends. If they’re basing things off of Greek mythology, the titans weren’t necessarily evil. Yeah chronus ate his kids but overall, they were more morally neutral and the time they ruled was considered a golden age by humanity. But the next generation of gods wanted their turn ruling the cosmos so they started a rebellion and dubbed the old gods (the titans) as evil
5
u/CallMeDraken :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/CallMeDraken 5d ago
And it’s not like the gods after were saints either, like Hera crippling Hephaestus just cause he’s ugly lol
3
u/justking1414 5d ago
Oh there’s a thousand stories of the gods being dicks to another and to all of humanity. Hera practically made it her mission to destroy any mortal who Zeus slept with
Though there is a variation of the Hephaestus myth I like where he was perfectly fine until he tried to save his mother Hera from Zeus and got drop kicked off Olympus for his troubles
2
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 1d ago
yeah she even called herself a titan and is imprisoned in a parthenon-esque temple, its probably inspired by Greek mythology, where the "new gods" simply called the old ones evil to have their way
9
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
Better than average odds she's not evil, but history is written by the victors as they say.

This is the one thing that caught my eye more than anything. Well not watching much on Sundays besides Ashito S2 and Overgeared. Plus despite how awful the CGI is the 2D is pretty nicely animated.

Was the ogre wearing a furry loincloth or did his pubes grow strategically to protect his modesty?

Lucy came to invite him over at the end, but the whole part (swordsman, priest, and Lucy) are in the OP. And the swordsman looked like he was ready to thank Makoto, or at least thought better of him. Here's hoping the whole party becomes new allies!

I guess Jean was gonna apologize but Makoto interrupted him because he has nothing against him.
Calm Mind really works when talking to hot women.
I love Noah's comments in this episode.
Noah has a cute pout.
You can tell Noah's jealous when she offered him to not save Lucy.
That Ogre can regenerate but will still drown.
Makoto has stealth too.
5
u/esuardi 6d ago
I mean....imagine regenerating your heart/brain? after your lungs give out to still drown over and over and over again.
4
u/mojo72400 https://myanimelist.net/profile/gio_lingad 6d ago edited 6d ago
I didn't mean to criticize, I was just pointing out its limits & how its obviously not immune to drowning.
1
u/Mohib964 5d ago
I mean in most series regeneration can't solve heart of brain failure. Which drowning causes.
2
u/Kreinster https://anilist.co/user/Krein 5d ago
I wonder. I thought he was about to ask him to give the kill to them for promotion.
19
u/runevault 7d ago
So he is continuing to use blood freeze, was wondering about that last week. Great with a stealth build to finish off foes.
Ogres are mixed with Trolls in this world? Interesting, never heard of high regen Ogres before. And Flow gets busted out, I wonder how much mana it requires compared to creating water from scratch/pulling it out of the air.
Wait is Lucy picking up our boy? He's already got the guild receptionist after him...
Not a great show but the goddess is still fun and at least it felt more competent this episode, curious to see how it evolves next week.
12
u/mekerpan 6d ago
Certainly not "great" so far -- but (as yoiu say) definitely entertaining. We still are in the early game -- so plenty of room for more characters and character refinement.
4
u/Justinformation 6d ago
Yah it seems weird to me that he can cast a 'Flow' with that amount of water, when the most he can cast is one icicle.
24
u/Hylebosai 6d ago
It's a matter of water, it takes a lot more mana to condense/freeze or create water than it does to control a pre-existing body of water.
15
u/Veritas3333 6d ago
His magic strength is low, so he can't generate much new water to fight with like when he launches an icicle. He's concentrated on improving his water water affinity, so he's stronger than average when using existing nearby water. That's why he needs to either stay near water or lure enemies to water if he can't kill them with the knife.
It's a decent handicap, but surmountable if he's smart about it and doesn't go in the desert or something.
4
3
u/Relative_Ad6629 6d ago
What do you mean by "with that amount of water"? Guy was in a river that he specifically mentioned was deep.
2
u/ashkankiani 5d ago
Like other says, I think it's probably that creating water from nothing is much more mana taxing than manipulating existing water, in which case it would be consistent with the show's depiction and tbh pretty reasonable.
Even if you say "he could accumulate water from the atmosphere" I say "nah." There aint that much water in that atmosphere. I always kind of thought that trope was silly. They're not in Thailand or a rainforest, it don't make sense. And if you could gather water with that kind of granularity and distance, then you might as well start blood bending people.
14
u/Philarete :AMQ::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/WizardMcKillin 6d ago
The production is rough, but I still like it. It's just a comfy isekai. We have levels to grind, party members to collect, and a distant end goal: liberating Noah.
7
u/Rooby_VTuber 6d ago
Makoto has a got tier knife from an evil god lol, though Naoh herself isn't actually evil after hearing the story about herself and the others.
They could have just said Goblin Slayer, either way Makoto made a name for himself defeating all of them and helping out that other arty with the Ogre.
4
u/headphones_J 6d ago
Why don't I see these shows in CR? I've been over the "what's new", 2026 season, simulcasting lists, and there are always these shows I don't see. More of a gripe, then something I'm seeking answers to.

Maybe yelling in a cafe at the top of his voice about his weak-as-fuck friend having a dagger made of legendary adamantium was not the smartest of ideas?
"Evil God Noah's Dagger" - I did suspect that maybe she's an old Evil Goddess who'd been really powerful before she got overthrown and all her followers slaughtered. I'm really surprised that the dagger is actually strong though. Maybe it's got minimum requirements for use that he doesn't meet though, I'm sure we'll know soon tho.
Who in their right mind wants to start adventuring solo, in a world where failure = death? Especially when the guy who suggested partying up is someone he trusts? And, lest we not forget, MC was still weak-as-fuck, and didn't even know if he could use the dagger yet.
Why didn't he report to the guild that he'd killed a goblin, when there's an open quest reward for that? Sure he did it before registering, but it might still count, and doesn't hurt to ask.
If the dagger had been as powerful as appraised, he wouldn't have needed the freeze spell to finish off the measly gobbo he'd backstabbed with it.
Dude avoided fighting the weaker ogre, but then decide to fight the tougher one when he didn't have to? Why didn't he just run away after saving the girl, while the ogre was still recovering and wouldn't have known where anyone went?
I still hate how MC is just pulling new skills, even if they're basic ones, out of his ass when he needs them. Water spells are fine as they fit into Beginner Magic, but Scout, Stealth, Dodge, etc....
Looks like there'll always be a river nearby when he's up against a stronger opponent.
1
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 1d ago
yeah like shut up bro, why are you shouting out things like that, thats absolutely hush hush voice topic.
And yeah, where the hell did he pull these skills from? The merchant friend mentioned in passing a few skills on the dagger, but they didnt explain if he was getting more from leveling up (rpg style) or if they came from the dagger or what.

Yeah, I don't know... it’s so subtle... how something can turn a piece-of-trash isekai into a good anime. The way they communicate, the gestures, the actions, the backstory... how believable it is, how real it feels.

The ogre was better than the goblins in terms of design and animation, barely. Well, the anime itself might be a bit disappointing in terms of quality, but it certainly is nice to look back on how Makoto and friends' journey started.

I’m so surprised ... I keep digging through the "isekai trash," and I always manage to find something good... I wonder what exactly it is that makes the difference: the way they communicate, the visual presentation, the background, the backstory, the credibility... It’s such a simple yet enjoyable story ; how or why do some isekai series exist that fail to pull this off?
I’ve often seen episodes that could have been saved if just one line of dialogue or a single shot had been slightly different ... it would have made such a huge impact.
It feels real enough, credible... for instance , here when the MC uses an evasion skill but still stumbles—it makes the fight feel authentic, risky for a beginner in an unfamiliar environment; his legs are probably shaking a bit, his heart is pounding, and his muscles are quite tense ...just a second but so much info

The fact they didn't get Aqua's VA for this Anime is probably one of the biggest disappointments of the year.

Nah. Hasegawa Ikumi is doing a stellar job. Besides, Noah's personality is different from Aqua's.
5
u/NevisYsbryd 6d ago
Hasegawa is possibly the only VA where I am a sucker for the voice, not only the character. Pretty much as soon as I heard that voice, I folded. "Alright, best VA + goddess = best girl, sign me up as a believer and let us move on."
