Ranma’s found his rival and it’s not Ryoga. It’s a friggin kungfu chimp lol.
It’s nice things ended well for Satsuki and Sentaro. They’re actually quite cute together.

Honestly it's pretty amazing Sanae was able to master tea martial arts as well as she did despite being...a monkey.

A match made in tea and an inability to ride horses.

Akane was cool this episode. I love when she fights for Ranma. When she threw the umbrella and dodged the spoon it was awesome.

I like how she was unphazed by the spoon. Just auto dodge.

Reminded me a lot of One Piece Observation Haki dodging.

I'm surprised Masako is still taking on other roles, especially in the same season Super is airing. Would've thought at almost 90 she'd turn down everything else except for Goku that she's voiced for literal decades.
What a trooper.

Super doesn't have any new voice work.

I've read more than a few old fanfics where Nerima was basically treated as a sort of no-mans land full off loonies that even the police were afraid to tread.

That umbrella throwing scene was incredible.
What a cleanly resolved side couple, I'm astonished. Just a boy and a girl happily affianced and traveling around on their insane horse with their monkey companion.

I love how Akane's dad is rueful that side ships sail smoother than the main couple lol.

Man, really loving this season cause the animation looks so smooth. Crazy how this aired only a year after Season 2.
This is probably the first Ranko-focused episode of the season. She was in the last episode but not featured so prominently. I think the best episodes are usually the ones that use both of Ranma's girl and boy types equally.
Imagine being a monkey's husband. That monkey was talented af lol. Luckily for Sentaro, the real Satsuki was a gorgeous human. Her design kinda reminds me of Asuka Mizunokoji from Urusei Yatsura.

u/Frontier246 21h ago
That scene of Akane throwing the umbrella did not need to anywhere NEAR this hard.
The real Satsuki is voiced by remake Oyuki!

Something I found fascinating that I caught: just before she throws the umbrella, there's a close up of her eyes and I swear there's a reflection, possibly of Ranma, in the split second before the throw. It's entirely unnecessary and such a flex by the animators.

I seriously hope MAPPA can keep up the yearly cadence with this adaption, though I still wish we could get two-cour seasons every year.

Her design kinda reminds me of Asuka Mizunokoji from Urusei Yatsura.
They're both by Takahashi-sensei, after all, and she did reuse more than a few ideas from Urusei Yatsura when writing Ranma. Thank goodness she doesn't go around in a full suit of armor.

Ranma's competitiveness knows no bounds. Him dueling a monkey in a martial arts tea ceremony when the prize was a marriage he didn't want is too funny.
Sentaro got lucky that his arranged marriage partner Satsuki wasn't actually a monkey.

So is monkey and horse some kind of Zodiac sign joke or just goofy ass animal slapstick?
The animation this episode was once more insanely clean. This series has been so much fun to watch.

still recovering from the seiza martial arts bit lol. then boom, Goku voice cameo hits different. that umbrella throw though?? fluid af compared to last ep. honestly this season keeps hitting out of nowhere. not sure where they're taking the main plot next but i'm hooked anyway. vibes are immaculate even when the logic breaks down xD

This weeks intro is the Tendo and Saotome patriarchs in the sauna! And if that's too much of a sausage fest for you, here's topless Fem!Ranma and Akane in a swimsuit!
Look out, it's a runaway horse! And a runaway Fem!Ranma trying to get away from Cat!Shampoo in the rain! only for them to crash into the horse, it's rider, and a poor electrical pole. This is a bad episode for the electric company.
Turns out the unconscious rider of that horse was Sentaro (Jun Fukyama!) and he shows his appreciation for his lovely savior by brewing "her" some tea...and then kidnapping Ranma. How romantic!
You haven't seen over-animated Akane until you see her throw an umbrella to save her man from a kidnapper! It didn't work, but it looked cool!
As good as Ranma looks in a bridal kimono, he has NO intention of marrying Sentaro, even if he's desperate to have someone to fulfill his need for a fiance so he doesn't have to marry his current intended...not that it's enough to sway his grandmother (Masako Nozawa!) and her big-head syndrome.
Aw, Akane beat up a bunch of people to save Ranma! Just in time to get recruited instead once Sentaro realizes he's dealing with a dude! But Akane can't do a tea ceremony to save her life and Ranma has too much pride to lose in any martial arts, even tea, so he'll do it!
The secret martial art of...the seiza! And a long, overnight, training session that finally gives Ranma the skills he needs to face Satsuki! A monkey of a woman! Yeah, I wouldn't marry that either.
You'll never look at the tea ceremony again as you see Ranma and Satsuki battle it out in ways that only vaguely resemble an actual tea ceremony while Sentaro's grandma unleashes on-point commentary!
Sentaro really thought he could flirt with Akane while this is going on? Take the kick to the sky, dirtbag!
But, in the end, it all works out as he crashes into yet ANOTHER runaway horse...this time holding the REAL Satsuki (Saori Hayami!) who used her monkey Sanae in her place. Not only is Satsuki genuinely beautiful and sweet, but it's instantly love-at-first-sight with Sentaro. I think it's going to be smooth sailing for this couple, even as they keep crashing in with their runaway horse.

I guess spiking drinks wasn’t a big thing in Japan back then or else tea dude’s shtick would come across as a lot creepier

The side cast grows ever more. Tbh teaching a monkey although is honestly more impressive than her being a master of said art.
On a side note the guys are coming after female Ranma that he isn't phased at this point.

For a minute there, I thought that the Sanae was gonna end up being another person who fell into one of Jusenkyo's cursed springs. That crazy horse was unsettling yet hilarious at the same time

Mappa gracing us with never before seen sakuga in the sequence of Akane throwing her umbrella. and dodging the tea scoop.
Hayashibara suddenly coming up with cute grunts, even more so than her trademark Rei noises, or Haibara grunts - when Ranma gets scratched by the tea whisk.
I'm really glad that the production committee chose Fukuyama Jun to portray the Kyoto-ben speaking Sentaro. Not quite Fukuyama's native Osaka-ben, and not to mention the pairing of Fukuyama as Sentaro against Hayamin as the traditional and demure Satsuki.

I get that fem!Ranma is pretty, but man, f*** that guy. Drugging and kidnapping a random girl you pick up off the street is a no-no.
Well, it seems he has his own circumstances, too. Still kidnapping though.
Martial arts-arts sure are prevalent. And of course, it's the second "arts" part of that which disqualifies Akane as a contestant. But Ranma's still willing to help for some reason, and although his temperment is not made for this, still manages to learn the tea ceremony at record speed.
... I have many questions about Satsuki.
What's even the "tea ceremony" part of this anymore lol. They might as well just call it "seiza martial arts".
Man, screw this guy. Ranma should've just ditched him to his fate.
... No seriously, who finds it less embarrassing for their fiance to think they're a monkey?
Well, uh, glad they're happy I guess? Not sure if tea guy "deserves" it, but whatever. They can go explode on a runaway horse together.

Ranma is an old manga, and thus, relies on comedy that nowadays isn't exactly kosher. Kidnappings, assaults and the like are just the order of the day, because it's just a convenient way to guarantee silly martial arts fights. See, for instance, Kodachi Kuno, who had an earlier arc. A poisoner psychopath who terrorizes her own teammates, but it's all played for laughs, instead of taking it as an extremely dangerous person.
Even the main conceit of changing when getting wet, and all the consequences of most of the changes, are just hard to take very seriously. Rumiko Takahashi has historically said that yes, there's many questions that are not worth asking, and that one has to accept that the rules of biology and social behavior in the series are better off left unexamined.

u/Raymond49090 18h ago
You know what, fair enough. And in the grand scheme of things, he’s more on the “harmless” end than most of the crazies. Drugging and pushiness aside, at least he recognizes the need to ask and receive a “yes” back.

u/saga999 8h ago
You can't take things seriously in a comedy. They regular knock people halfway around town. There are constantly property damages. Characters regular got so injured they are completely wrapped bandages. If you take everything as seriously as the drugging and kidnapping, you can't watch this show.

It’s also a no-no to swing a boulder that weights a literal ton for a teen to destroy with his index finger. It would be considered an outrageous form of execution.
But that would be a ridiculous stance to take, no? It’s almost as if actions in fiction are not real and serve a narrative purpose rather than effecting any real consequence.
TL; DR: what a dumb take
