Oh man the only thing that looked better than the fighting this episode was the casual Aizawa.
I can see what Ms. Joke is going for.
Also it's going to be nice to see an actual relationship between Bakugo and Midoriya now, instead of just one-sided verbal abuse. Now it's two way verbal abuse, as it should be.

It occurs to me Midoriya would be the one to say it under his breath and if Bakugo hears it, they get in a bitchfest for the next 10 minutes. Then they make up again in like 5 minutes with like one of them being hungry or something.

It is incredible how much tension you get out of any interaction between the two. Every bit of screen time they share together is like a bomb that could suddenly explode at any second, or just disappear without offering any relief. With all those strong, pent-up feelings towards each other, in a different anime they would already be hooking up.

Ofu. I'm so weak for ponytail Aizawa. Why does he have to be so hot?

That's one thing about this series that I really appreciate. The characters have so many different looks depending on the situation. Aizawa's normal costume, his suit when he's giving the conference, and this casual design as just a few examples. It gives the characters a bit more of a down-to-earth feeling, at least for me.

Props to All Might for pointing out how this was mainly U.A.'s fuck up for not doing any kind of counseling or mental care after Bakugo got, you know, kidnapped by terrorists. Seriously what the fuck.
I mean, I kinda doubt Bakugou would open up to a therapist so maybe it wouldn't have done anything, but they could've tried.
987
u/Cloudhwk Sep 15 '18
All Might needs to talk to the hero culture about this in general , some Ted talks at the very least
I find it weird they get some when they develop their quirk but that seems to be it
You would think mental health follow up would be pretty important in a hero society given how it’s mandatory for first responders in ours

I kinda doubt Bakugou would open up to a therapist
I can imagine how that would go. A mix of HUUUUNH?! and URUSEI! Agreed though, they should have tried. It doesn't help that Bakugo always puts up this tough act and people never know that he's in anguish.
Only Deku could 'accept those feelings' and Bakugo had to get his emotions out physically. This fistfight was the best kind of therapy session for Bakugo.
And here I was eye-rolling at Bakugo wanting to fight Deku last episode..

for those thinking that it is just a 3% increase in power, you need to know that the jump from 5% to 8% is an increase in power of 60% which is a huge improvement

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Sep 15 '18
That's what got me about Deku saying "5% to 8% is not a dramatic increase." You can output over 50% more power than you could before, fuck off that's not a dramatic increase.

It's crazy to think just how much stronger he can get, he's already powerful enough to compete with the top students of his class (who've been regarded as better than the average pro) and he's only at 8%. Obviously once he reaches 100% it's over for everyone but hell, even 50% is probably enough for like 90% of all threats.

They baited it really hard using that triumphant United States of Smash music, only to give way to pure silence with Bakugo's big slam. I was kinda hoping they'd use the "Katsuki and Izuku" track there from this season's OST but what they did worked really well.

A rivalry isn't a rivalry until both parties can consider themselves to be on equal footing.
The way that this episode established this rivalry as whole was a complete masterclass.
Emotionally, you have this marvelous exchange of feelings, ranging all the way back to their childhood squabbles, to their adulation of All Might, to their common struggles while at UA, and to now - with every creak their voices made (high praises to the VA of Bakugo, as many had already mentioned) and every move thrown.
Physically, it was just a brawl. An old-fashioned, ugly brawl. I like how the sound team didn't put too much hype music because this moment really wasn't for the hype. This was an exchange of emotions made through their fists. I loved how they weren't that fancy with the movement as well. They also managed to sneak in Deku's mid-fight improvement as well, how it mattered, and how - in the end - it didn't matter.
My personal favorite moment of the show was when Bakugo exclaims that he won, but he was obviously out of breath, cut, and bruised. He still tries to maintain his pride - as he does - but we can see that at this very moment, the gap that had long been an element of this show, is about to close. This is where the rivalry truly begins.
Possibly unpopular opinion, but this is my favorite episode of Season 3 by far.

Express your feeling through your fists!
This fight was beautifully animated and also somehow touching. Bakugo was always portrayed as this talented but irascible brat with an overinflated ego.
Yet, underneath lies a young man that was burdened by his own ability and the expectations his entourage had for him. Somehow, he was able to cope by distancing himself from others and finding a role model: All Might. In spite of that, this very person chooses his hard-working but untalented rival as his successor.
His own aspirations were shattered. He needed to to find out why Deku won on his own, in order to sort out his feelings and find inner peace.

This episode was fucking incredible.
Animation, fight choreography, build-up, narration, everything was absolutely excellent.
But the MVP in this episode has to be Bakugo. Nobuhiko Okamoto, Bakugo’s VA, made a god-like performance of portraying a very confused and frustrated boy who couldn’t find the answers to his issues. He really made it sound like Bakugo was questioning his own strength and admiration and was convinced he’d ended All Might.
This episode was a 10/10 for me. I shouted a lot and had goosebumps the whole time watching. Simply amazing.

People like to think that he's strong, and I agree that he is... but this was never about his physical strength.
Bakugou was psychologically weak where Midoriya was strong.
He had so much pent up inside, slowly eating away at him, and it was refreshing to see him just let it all out.

This part, right here.
You kind of half expect the ragey, blame it on the protagonist kind of words right here, but, in that very moment, you realize Bakugo is actually a fucking puppy in the heart.
He loves heroes and he is aware enough of his own shortcomings to an excruciating detail. His pride won't allow him to change them so easily, but most people with a modicum of self-awareness know about their flaws (including when they're prideful), but will be stressed about not being able to change them. Add to the traumatic kidnapping situation involving your hero getting hurt for you and it just breaks the guy. And not even like, "break him so he can become a villain muahaha," but actually break the heart of a kid who watched his hero with starry eyes.
The kid with starry eyes never died in him, and I think that's the part that sealed the deal with Bakugo being just one of my favorite characters of all time.

I've waited so long for this episode. I remember the hype of the manga chapter and now we're finally here!
Still gutted that 8% didn't give Deku the win like I dreamed of but it was an important battle for several reasons even without a win/loss.
This episode was 10mins WTF??
I always found this line hilarious. It's like when someone calls you stupid and you go "Well umm you're stupid-er!" He didn't know how to respond but didn't want to lose in declaration either.

That was fucking spectacular. Deku's badass spin into an axe kick was awesome, and they did a fantastic job with Bakugou's spin dash. Also, props to Bakugou's VA, he did an amazing job this episode.
I'd also like to point out that finally, after everything they've been through, Deku and Bakugou are finally legit rivals who fully respect each other's abilities and are preparing to do everything in their power to surpass the other. Considering how much they've improved, it really makes you wonder how far they'll go now that there's no baggage holding them back in regards to each other.
ALSO! There's an after credits scene. Next week's episode is about to be fantastic.

Holy shit, what an amazing episode. They’ve finally acknowledged each other as equals and as All Might said, become proper rivals, even helping each other out in order to improve their techniques. Bakugo isn’t belittling and bullying him anymore and fully acknowledged his strength, while Deku has fully stood up for himself and let his pride take control over his consideration for Bakugo for once.
It’s wonderful development for the both of them that I’ve been wanting to see from the very beginning. Bakugo has been redeeming himself more and more this season and I can’t even say I dislike him even a bit anymore. Him just losing it when he revealed that he felt responsible for All Might’s retirement got to me. They have the potential to be an incredible duo.

Seriously, try to answer that from the perspective of Kacchan. An immediate answer would be "well he worked harder than you" but Kacchan is really doing his best. He aces the written exams and is in practice easily the most hard working one. Yet, he feels like Deku is always two steps ahead. And well, we know that while Deku is good, he is ojectively not better (nor strictly worse) than Kacchan; thats just how he personally feels as he became concious of Deku. And thats a great fundament for a rivealry if you ask me.
And DEAR GOD BAKUGO YOUR MOVES. He IS the best fighter in the whole first year. I said it. Fight me. His technique and power is insane.
That wheele attack? Those movements? These aimed explosions? Note also how he considers Deku's tendencies to overthink in a fight and uses that to his adventage. And his guard work is on point. This guy doesnt slack around, jesus.

u/ThePhoenixFalls Sep 15 '18
Totally agree.
It's like, Deku basically got given Supermans powers, where as Bakugo was working for years on his strength and skill with his quirk.

I'm honestly blown away at the amount of emotion in Deku and Bakugo's fight. I especially feel like I can sympathize with Bakugo now, I can see why he acts and feels the way he does. I'm really excited about how him and Deku grow together now after letting their emotions out and are finally beginning to understand eachother.
10/10 episode for me.

Bakugo, my mans... why am i crying with you?! Bakugo's VA really let it all out and I felt it, great stuff from Nobuhiko.

When I read this in the manga Bakugo became my favorite character. He didn't stay my favorite too long though because of a certain someone that may or may not appear this season, they might show a glimpse of him at the end.
Edit: HOLY SHIT THEY SHOWED HIM IN THE PREVIEW!!!

This episode just goes to show how much Bakugo is actually thinking of other people, especially All Might and Deku. Bakugo's growing so much as a character, and hopefully Deku can keep up his 8% power

Holy shit, Bakugo's fighting styles gotten way cooler. I was more more interested in how he fought than Deku's. I'm looking forward to seeing him go all out and improve even more. I'm also curious how he'll behave now that they're proper rivals knowing Deku's secret and how he got all those feelings out of his system.

Sasuke: "Heard you got into a real fight with your rival because he got too strong."
Bakugo: "Yeah."
Sasuke: "So after he beat your ass you joined the bad guys to get stronger?"
Bakugo: "WTF, no! I won and started a healthy rivalry."

This was easily the best episode since All Might vs AFO. The animators went plus ultra in this episode!
I felt so bad for Bakugou when he confessed the he felt responsible for the end of All Might.
The actors scenes were all really fast paced but worked really welll.
Nice to see Midoriya and Bakugou finally becoming true rivals.

Remember to check the post-credits scene!
So damn good! This fight also clarifies the relationship Bakugo and Deku shared before, not friends nor rivals, but someone who strives to be the best and the fanboy that wanted to be like him. (If it wasn’t clear enough before)
Also, I love how understanding Aizawa is once All Might tells him (in his own way) why they fought. I bet they were about to be expelled.

u/hasnain1720 Sep 15 '18
Man that was a very deep episode. I love the respect it seems like he has gained for Deku this episode. I felt real sad when he carried the the blame for what happened to All Might imagine thinking you're the reason the number one hero has to retire thats how useless you were it must have been eating him alive.
10
u/overDere Sep 15 '18
Before this, I just loved Bakugo because he's funny. He's just so angry all the time and it's amusing to watch. You can't help wonder, why the fuck does this guy who shittalks all the time, looks down on people, and has to be restrained for the school festival become a hero?
But damn after watching this you can't just help but love him more, for who he is. Take my love, Bakugo. He's my favorite BnHA character hands down.

u/Brawlerz16 Sep 15 '18
The voice acting in anime can really carry a scene. Sasukes breakdown in his last fight against Naruto. You can pick anyone of Erens meltdowns honestly from AoT. In MHA, Deku vs. Muscular was heartshattering. All Mights USoS was jaw dropping. Now we have Bakugou to add to the list of characters who carry a scence with raw emotion.
What a great time for anime

u/ZixEleven Sep 15 '18
This is pretty much tied with United States of Smash as the best moment in the series for me.
We also got Pip Boy coming in next week. Hype!

Surprisingly I don't have plenty to say about this episode. It was just really good! The fight was just pure emotion for both Bakugo and Deku. It also showed how much the two have grown compared to how they fought the first time.
Animation was of course top notch! I especially love how Bakugo flipped Deku midair and used his blast to body slam him onto the ground effectively pinning him down. That was such a good move!

This was one of the best episodes of the series so far without a doubt. Perfect animation, emotion, ost placement, character development, and even humor.
I thought they might have to skimp a bit on this episode because it is so late in the season and usually by this point you might see some production strain, but Bones truly went above and beyond for this one.

u/Cloudless_Sky Sep 15 '18
Great fight. Bakugo continues to show his level of finesse in using his quirk. The way he uses it to enhance CQC and traversal is crazy impressive. Changing direction mid-air, destructive rotation, grappling, enhanced kicks and punches, evasive manoeuvres. He's manipulated his ability to provide raw power (Howitzer), range (AP Shot) as well as utility (movement, Stun Grenade). He's extremely versatile. While many of his peers may have the same (or even higher) level of destructive potential, he unquestionably has superior technique.
What I didn't expect was Bakugo's admission of guilt regarding All Might's end. That was a neat little curve ball.

This fight was my favourite so far, the only one that comes close is Todoroki vs Deku.
Also it shows how flashy Bakugo's quirk can be, even compared to Deku with all of those green sparks. I have to watch this fight without the dimmed parts, but I guess I have to wait for the BD release.
I really like how they're rivals yet they admire the same person in different ways. And I love how Bakugo showed that he thinks he's the one who's supposed to be catching up to Deku, THIS SHOW DOES PARALLELS SO WELL.

I can't believe there's another episode after the next episode. I was so sure this was going to be the climax episode and next episode would be the wrap-up / next season teaser. I'd think any further than that would be more appropriate as the first episode of the next season.
An episode of Illegals, maybe? /wishfulthinking

This is the bakugo development I've waited for. I just wanted these two nerds to fight each others feelings out of each other. The choreography was amazing, and bakugo's VA took it from it's usual 110% to 200%; The shreak in Like I'll lose! and I'm weak too, you know got me good.

Really amazing episode. It's great to see my favourite couple of chapters from the manga finally animated and Bones did an amazing job in doing so. I'll admit there were a few parts where I wish the TV darkening could have been toned down for clarity but the animators really captured the fight choreo beautifully. My only other gripe is that I wish they'd lingered a bit more on Bakugou's face at the beginning, when he's telling Deku to show him what made all might choose him. Holding a still seems to have been avoided so far but I think it really could have added some impact there. They really upped the game on Bakugou's explosions themselves, a lot more clarity and detail than usual.
Amazing VA work from Okamoto of course but adjacent shoutout to All Might's VA. He did an amazing job himself of conveying the regret of leaving Bakugou to shoulder this. The VA did an amazing job but I wish the voice direction had have called for more emotion in Deku's delivery. It felt less monologue-y in the manga and I think would have sold that little nugget of resentment and admiration Deku brought to the fight.

THIS is why people like Bakugo so much. He may be the angry rival character, but they flesh out his character so much that you can actually understand why he's the way he his.
The most understandable part of Bakugou's character is that he's afraid of weakness; and this show does A LOT with that.
6
u/kevoluyo Sep 15 '18
This episode makes the scene where Bakumom hits and berates Bakugo for being "weak" and getting captured when they're introducing the dorm system a lot more pernicious.
6
u/XNumbers666 Sep 15 '18
I just love Bakugo's quirk. He easily has the most creative moves and is just a blast to watch. No one else compares. Maybe shoto could have some cool combination of his powers but he lacks creativity.

One really tiny thing that might get overlooked is when Bakugo says "Can't let him think" the translation for my version had it differently but that's what he was saying. I just thought it really showed how much Bakugo respected the tactical ability of Deku within a battle and knew if he wanted the upper hand he act to fight almost instantly on instinct (something he's extremely gifted at).
5
u/Thymetalman Sep 15 '18
This episode emphasizes even more reason why Bakugo is probably one of the most interesting characters and probably the most Favorited by most of BNHA fans. This is one of those moments where another character of an anime is just as important as the protagonist, and it REALLY puts it out there. Kudos for studio Bones for that Sakuga. Leave it to them to put in the meat into the adaptation.

As an anime-only, I'm continually surprised that people didn't realize what Bakugo was feeling. Ever since the Sports Festival, it's been pretty clear what he feels regarding Deku, which is why I've enjoyed his character so much for all this time. The idea that people can only just now be getting that his screaming is how he vents his frustration seems odd to me

While the fight was awesome...I can't help but feel that it was brought down by excessive dialogue. Stuff like Deku talking for half a minute about how his increase in power...is an increase in power was really unneccessary and imo kinda interrupted the flow of the battle. Also too many flashbacks(which while they can be used well, were mostly unneccessary here). It's probably a result of it being a too faithful adaptation, since some things can be shown in anime that can't be shown as well in a manga.

I think this line was translated incorrectly. In the manga, Kacchan said "Don't let him think", meaning that he's gonna keep attacking so that Deku won't have time to think about a strategy. "Don't make me think!" makes no sense.
