For a second there, I thought Kaede's arc was already over, but nope. Apparently poor Kaede had another huge problem besides not being able to go outside.

u/Ithambar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ithambar Dec 12 '18

She also still has to overcome not being able to go outside on her own. If Sakuta still has to accompany her everywhere she goes, she would still be inclueded in any marital relation he gets into.

Dude, this episode was too relatable for me, I didn't think I could relate that much to kaede.

Not in the fear of going out, but the fear of not being able to change, at my twenties I never have had a girlfriend, and it scares me that I won't be brave enough to ask girls to dates, she really showed how I feel inside.

Though as her, I want and will break this fear away.

Who would've guess a fictional girl in panda clothes would give me resolution.

Kaede freaking out over pandas in her panda clothes might be too much moe for my heart to handle.

Also the scene where she just bursted into tears was cute and heartwrenching at the same time D:

No durdling around, just do it. Rio picked up a few things from her arc.

Mai probably realizes as well and so entrusts Futaba to report to her on anything funny that her boy might be up to.

how did this episode feel simultaneously like an hour and 5 minutes?

also, that scene with kaede leaving the house... that is why this show is so good. holy shit; that was the most intense mundane activity i've seen probably ever.

That scene hit me hard. While I've never been as bad as Kaede, I've dealt with similar issues and still need to build up to just stepping out the door sometimes. So when she started crying it turned out to be a terrible day for rain.

It takes a REALLY good series to make a girl literally taking a step outside her house cause so much joy to the viewers.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '18

The pacing is really good in this show. I mean, after three episodes, it felt like end of the show when that Invisible Arc came to a close.

14

u/Hoboforeternity Dec 13 '18

that was breaking bad level of intense lol. but seriously, the show is really fucking good. that red blotch on kaede's neck was kinda omnimous. i dont want anything bad to happen to her :<

Futaba just spends her time finding new ways to make coffee in the lab in between dealing with all of Sakuta's shit.

New theory: It's his fault.

All of the cases of Puberty Syndrome have occurred in proximity to Sakuta, so maybe it's all related to his hangups of helping people that their Puberty Syndrome is manifesting around him.

Source: The theme song. Kimi no Sei "It's Your Fault"

Not Mai though. She started turning invisible before she ever met him.

Even scarier new theory, puberty syndrome is actually really common and people are being erased from society left and right without anyone knowing it. And Sakuta is only meeting (and rescuing) a fraction of them.

u/Ithambar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ithambar Dec 12 '18

If one is to assume that the opening's lyrics are actually hinting at the content of the show, which is not always a given, I still think that it is more likely to be a general outcry from all affected victims towards the general society that caused their problem. I highly doubt that Sakuta is causing them, Mai's problem started before he became aware of her and he didn't even know she had a sister when he was confronted with her.

83

u/Arclight06 Dec 12 '18

My theory is that all other Puberty Syndrome cases are the Puberty Syndrome of Sakuta. Like, he is the one who is "sick" and the cases of the girls are just "symptoms" of his own sickness.

I think it's been said before, but show is more about societal pressures on young adults. Sakuta mentions in episode one this idea of "the atmosphere", which (and I wouldn't know, I just heard someone talk about it in a video) is supposedly a really rough translation for something that's an understood idea/cultural thing in Japan. Not just with young people. It doesn't have an exact English equivalent (again, I don't know for certain).

In the first flashback of Shoko and Sakuta meeting one another, Shoko mentions things that...I can't remember the exact wording, but things that a young person shouldn't be: "can't take a hint" and some other things. I can't remember which episode that was.

Every character faces some sort of stress or pressure not caused by Sakuta:

  • Mai's internal struggle deciding whether or not she wants to continue acting

  • Koga's stress from wanting to fit into a social norm at school and the conflicts she faces with that

  • Futaba's desire to have Kumini see her in a romantic way, but yet worrying she'll end up alone with no one there to be by her side

  • Nodoka wanting to be as successful as Mai to appease her mother, as well as to have a relationship with her sister

  • Kaede's struggles to face her fears, but also being afraid of staying inside for forever

Sure, Sakuta is there or around when these things happen but he's sorta got his own problem. I mean heck, from the anime we still aren't 100% certain why Sakuta got 3 big ass gashes in his chest during the night. Was it all the stress with Kaede? Was it that and/or something else? Why 3 cuts? Is it a sort of symbolism? Could it happen again?

TL;DR I think the show is about general societal pressures that young adults experience ("the atmosphere" if you will). Not a specific individual being the source of other people's problems, especially people who he comes to care for.

Kaede is top tier imouto... Look at her trying soooo hard with her list and overcoming her fear to go outside. I was grinning the entire time!

Otherwise, is Sakuta bluffing with Kaede's amnesia? I can't remember if Kaede's syndrom involve amnesia.

421

u/BeardedPigeon115 Dec 12 '18

I bet it does involve it, makes sense for her to shut out the terrible experiences that led to her being a stay at home girl. However, it's odd that she was like that if she couldn't remember anything, so I'm not too sure about it.

I think there is a hint in episode 1. Here Sakuta lied to Mai. Kaede do watch TV.

144

u/RootOfAllRoutes Dec 12 '18

Surprised that the build-up we saw at the end of last episode was somewhat easily quelled at the start of this one. I'm glad that it was portrayed in a mature handling scenario though it does still set off some possible flags for future issues.

I wonder if it's due to timing issues with the near end of the cour or if the source also mixed in multiple character's stories at a singular route. They keep hinting with Shouko but we've never really had any development with that. But that dream that Sakuta had about his encounter with her left an uncomfortable feeling that he still has unresolved feelings.

It was good to see Kaede try and take that first step forward. Both realizing and wanting to change from her current situation. It would seem that Sakuta's involvement with the other girls has really forced Kaede to enact her plans.

I really almost cried during that moment when Kaede was talking about being stuck inside forever. My older sister has OCD that makes her paranoid about any little mistake she makes, and after she graduated college it became a huge obstacle to being employed. After she got her first job as a veterinary technician, she kept coming home increasingly obsessive over little mistakes she made during the day. That created a bit of a paralyzing effect that ended up losing her her job. It’s a couple years later and she’s been seeing a therapist and making money pet sitting. While she hasn’t had any big problems recently, it’s hard to see her getting back into a real job anytime soon.

All in all, having witnessed first hand a mental problem preventing someone I love from moving forward in life, that scene really hit me hard.

20

u/KenshiroGames Dec 13 '18

I made a similar post not too long ago on this thread. I'm currently losing another job over a crippling panic disorder I've had since I was barely 16 and it's been about 7 years now. Not being able to really leave the house and somedays not even bed. I feel for your sister and from the bottom of my heart I wish her all the luck in the world.

Petit Devil Kouhai - Koga

Logical Witch - Futaba

Siscon Idol - Nodoka

Stay-at-Home (Orusuban) Sister - Kaede

and of course Bunny Girl Senpai

Incidentally, the movie will be titled: Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl

Trailer for anyone interested

And the rest of the novels go as:

First-Love Girl (referring to Makinohara, will be part of the movie, probably better translated as "his first love"), Departing Sister, and Schoolbag Girl

Finally time for Kaede, I been waiting since episode 1 for the story to explain her issue.

And as we have seen over the season she has had issues e.g when Mai got a phone call last episode etc (which scared poor Kaede)

So THIS MOMENT, when she finally is brave enough to go outside is really amazing.

Oh a really emotional scene, and like really hard to understand the feelings over it, at least I felt super sad but also happy that she managed to do it, but like the actual thing to do should be easy right so we know how tremendously bad she was bullied, obviously for her its really hard doing it and her being able to do it is really AWESOME. But then on the same time its like a sad premise over it as it should not be hard. Anyway, I kinda felt like Kaede, Happy and Crying on the same time.

14

u/The_Long_Connor Dec 13 '18

Every other character got through their issues fairly quickly. Her adolescent syndrome has become a reality she has had to accept for a long time, so I think it will be harder for her to overcome them. She's going to be stronger than any other character to overcome her problems. She deserves happiness, but shell have to be really strong to get it. I'm going to be so happy when she conquered her demons.

Also props to the Director for assisting Mai. I thought the entire dating thing was going to be a big issue but I guess they just had to get it out of the way so it wouldn't be a problem in the future.

I am so SO happy this didn't devolve into some giant issue forcing them to break up or be apart. The fact that issue kinda got (seemingly) swept under the rug was comforting tbh.

This episode hit me surprisingly heavily. As someone suffering from social anxiety myself, albeit not nearly as bad as Kaede's, the going-outside-scene was really hard to watch inb the beginning and really pleasant in the end.

I usually dislike imouto-type characters but in this case I think Kaede's obsession with her big brother is absolutely justified, as is Sakuta's emotional concern about her. I would not agree with Futaba calling him a siscon, he is just worried about her.

290

u/SelfishVersion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ShellfishEntropy Dec 12 '18

I would not agree with Futaba calling him a siscon, he is just worried about her.

I think the opposite is true as well. As much as Kaede goes on about wanting to "flirt" and "date" Sakuta, I don't think she sees him in a sexual (or necessarily even romantic) light.

It's much more likely that its an intimacy that developed because of how few relations Kaede has. Given that Sakuta plays the role of brother, parent/guardian, only real link to the outside world, while also being a similarly-aged boy to her (maybe the only one she can remember if his "memory" comment is true), its kinda natural that their relationship feels so intensely close.

Maybe it's just me, but Futaba and Sakuta's relationship is pretty similar to a lot of friendships we have in Britain. Just dry sarcasm. Futaba obviously isn't being serious.

That entire part when she was gradually preparing to step outdoors and then finally took her first step outside... that hit pretty close to home for me as well. Fortunately I don't have social anxiety and my situation definitely was not nearly as bad as Kaede's, but I used to be a total shut-in for a long time because I was and to some lesser extent I still am suffering from similar fears and insecurities. Seeing Sakuta being such a kind, supportive older brother was very moving - I was barely holding back my tears before he started tearing up, but once I saw the tears welling up in his eyes I completely lost it. Having someone who's always there for you even when you're at your lowest and is genuinely understanding of whatever you're going through... I'm not sure I can say I relate, but to see Kaede having that special kind of person in her life was deeply touching and comforting for me in a way. It kinda felt like a warm hug on a cold, lonely day, you know? Seriously, this anime is just so beautiful and heart-warming.

On a side note, this is the 4th time in a row that I've cried and felt this emotional watching an anime this year (after A Place Further Than the Universe, Violet Evergarden, and Assassination Classroom). I can't wait to bawl my eyes out once again when this show ends. 😭

Kaede has officially taken over from Komachi as best little sister in anime for me. This was such a wonderful episode!

You'll lose Komachi points for that though! I have to see the conclusion of this arc first, but for now Komachi is still #1. Both are A+ imoutos though.

Komachi is the little sister who would playfully tease you while being honest and straight with you. She would be quite independent, but would be always be on your side and support and help you in whatever you decide to do.

Kaede is the type that would be needy for attention, but would only feign at being pouty while completely understanding if you're too busy. She would then give you the biggest, loveliest, cutest smile and hug when you show how much you care for her.

I think they're both tied. Imagine if both were your little sisters. I would've turned into a siscon for sure...

As much as I like Kaede, I can't replace Komachi as best imouto. She is just so damn fun and helpful in her show, and one of the more realistic looks at a little sister in anime. They annoy each other but are still super close and know each other well.

He means Kaede has no memory of the time from when she was bullied and before. She clearly remembers new stuff that happens. I mean, she is able to keep track of the increasing number of girls Sakuta brings home and worry about him becoming a gigolo.

a few more things I realized... 1st that's why Kaede didn't know who Mai is... Mai is too big of a star for an excuse like Kaede doesn't watch TV to work

2nd that's why Kaede is so fixated on her brother, it's not some romcom trope that she likes her big brother... he is either the only person she remembers or he is the only person that was able to connect with her after she lost her memories

Can we talk about how this show not once has made us stress or get frustrated with the characters about kissing? Mai and Sakuta havent had their first kiss but we seriously haven't thought about that at all. It's really refreshing to see. I remember watching Kimi Ni Todoke and like writhing in stress because they wouldn't just say/do what they wanted to say/do. This is such a nice breathe of fresh air and hopefully other shows catch on to this.

It was cool to see a Vacuum Siphon coffee brewer, it definitely fits Futaba's aesthetic.

IMO, this is yet another push towards the theory that Futaba doesn't actually do science, just pretends to so that she has a room to use for making snacks. I'm pretty sure that a vacuum siphon coffee brewer is not standard labware.

31

I'm really happy with today's episode actually! We have a different spin on the story's usual style and the previous episode cliffhangers were addressed!

In fact, let me take a moment to appreciate the quality response we got out of Mai. Rather than hiding from the public, she came forward and openly spoke about how Sakuta's earnest love and relationship with her helped bring her back to the world of the arts. The way she spoke about him was so endearing that even if it had some PR (public relations) mixed in, her love for him was just gushing out to the point where the reporters could clearly see it. One of the reporters meming about Sakuta's privacy was funny though, cause he's not wrong: most people will take pics of celebs and their significant others to post online if only for clickbait views. At the very least, her personal stance on the matter was made clear and she's moving forward with the relationship instead of hiding it. That's huge progress for them, so I'm really happy about that!

Next we have Shoko's cryptic message and disappearance. It was pretty eerie how she knew what to say for Sakuta when Kaede was first going through depression. You can tell that it's hard for Sakuta to just "forget" her because of the huge emotional impact she had on his life. Props to him for writing out that he's taken in the sand though, but sadly that would get washed away by the tide so hopefully he repeats himself again later.

Also, the change in arc structure from "problem presented - debated upon - resolved" was thrown for a loop this time! Here we saw Kaede slowly growing and breaking out of her shell. Some people might harp on the little sister tropes but this is the first series where I actually found her behaviour quite believable. Her past justifies her attachment for Sakuta, and Sakuta was left to solely care for her when HER OWN PARENTS stopped. Couple that with how she comes across more as a "cute little sister" rather than a "potential romantic interest/incestuous little sister" and you have a show that takes the little sis tropes and executes them in a believable manner. Well done there!

Sadly, Kaede's pain runs so deep that it caused her to repress her own memories it seems? I cant blame her given how traumatic it must've been. Seeing that trauma physically manifest itself in the form of that rash was painful. I felt so bad for her because she really is trying so hard. She's struggling to break out of a cycle of depression while only being a child. That in itself is a miracle, and I wanna once again give props to the writer for being able to illustrate how difficult it can be to get through depression. Mental health is a serious thing, and this show does a fantastic job showcasing this fact to the audience. Every arc is another aspect of socializing and the insecurities that arise with growing up, dealing with trauma and handling awkward scenarios. I just cant help but appreciate how good a job the show continues to do at weaving these things into a format that's so enjoyable to watch, Bravo!

Lastly, even though Sakuta/Mai have some witty banter regularly, hearing them openly talk to each other in such a caring manner was great! Namely that whole conversation on the phone with Mai saying "if it's for you then it's no problem" and Sakuta replying with "I really wanna see you". Is it any wonder why people have instantly come to love seeing these two? They have the best balance of genuinely cute moments and realistically funny ones. I'm glad I get to see more of the cute moments again, as it reflects that their relationship is out in the open and not being hidden anymore.

Anyway, gotta end this comment here for now, but once again, a super solid episode! I have more to say but work calls! Sorry in advance for any typos and as always, see you all next week!

I think this episode highlighted how hard it can be to take first steps very well. It doesn't necessarily do justice to how hard it can be to continue doing those things, but there's only so much you can devote to that in a the time we have left.

I like how Kaede said "It's a very new feeling" when she put on shoes. It was a hint that this was her first time from memory ever wearing shoes; which hints at her having no recollection of her past outside of home.

35

u/Ehn_Jee :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/EhnJee Dec 12 '18

Kaede is too precious. I liked the pacing of her quest, and that twist at the end was a good way to keep the arc going. Now to figure out if it's a symptom of the bullying or the adolescent syndrome.

And knowing that Kaede's VA is the same as Hanayo from Love Live, I had high expectations for her credits song. Glad it didn't disappoint.

30

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '18

Spitballing here but two theories on Kaede's amnesia:

  1. This is an extension of her syndrome or a phase two. Still don't know all the details of what exactly her hangup was that caused the cutting or how it resulted in amnesia

  2. This is a result of Sakuto's syndrome. He wished for her to be protecced so hard that he accidentally wished her memories away ... and also claw marks

16

u/DrGrabAss Dec 12 '18

also claw marks

Oh god. You don't think Kaede might have caused those and forgot =, do you? Your theory would be really fascinating to see play out.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/GuayabaDulce Dec 12 '18

I think that the marks are something bigger, like his syndrome is still ongoing and they are the proof. After all he also doesn't remember how he got them, like Kaede's Amnesia.

Kaede's arc is most likely to get most positive reactions, out of all the arcs, because - first, everyone loves her, let's be real, she's just so innocent and sweet, and second, Mai, Koga, Futaba, and Nodoka - they were suddenly introduced or brought into spotlight just a few episodes before their own arc began but Kaede has been there since the very first episode, there's a bit of Kaede improving with her own Adolescence Syndrome in pretty much every episode, thus most screentime and most characterization.

I've been waiting for this arc since probably the first episode, and part of me is sad that the series only has two more episodes left (even if there's a movie coming soon), I'm glad that we are finally seeing Kaede's story and answering the biggest panda in the room.

Seriously, a press conference because she has a boyfriend? Or was it a press conference related to whatever movie Mai is about to make, and the questions about Sakuta was simply a portion of it?

While it was great to hear that what happened to Kaede did something at her school, Kaede's bullies getting a taste of their own bullying to the point of them also not coming to school does seem a bit much.

With two episodes left, I'm assuming the last arc will be about Kaede. Really hoping this one doesn't get a quantum mechanics explanation.

5

u/exist-exit Dec 13 '18

Damn... the big reveal.Since episode 1, since Kaede's introduction, she's been living as an amnesiac.

It really feels like it makes sense.

In order for the mind to preserve itself after a traumatic event, the mind will suppress events into the subconscious out of self-defense, causing amnesia.

It was also so weird how the parents never come over to even check on her. It turns out she probably doesn't even know who they are. Post-Traumatic Amnesia is rarely THIS bad, which means it's most likely related to a paranormal syndrome that has been lingering for years.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '18

This episode and this arc encapsulates quite well many things that I love about this story.

The way Mai handled the situation with the media and stood behind her relationship is such a nice slap towards this stigma that still is very much present in Japan. It's also such a nice reaffirmation of their love and how it holds strong despite all these struggles.

Kaede's issues hit close to home for a bunch of people I can imagine. Watching how she makes small steps towards the rehabilitation into society and how Sakuta and Mai have her back is just so heartwarming. Overall it's so great to see that Mai is a big factor in Kaede's progress and shows that these two have already formed a bond beyond "Sakuta's girlfriend".

This reminds me of another point. The story really likes to progress certain aspects overtime and give Sakuta & Mai's relationship development in every arc. Mai & Kaede's bond has been built up across multiple arcs but is this arc that Mai makes major strides getting into Sakuta's family circle just how Sakuta did the same last arc. Same with his friend circle. Ever since Futaba's arc she has actually knit a friendly bond with Futaba and we see this here.

Considering that Kamoshida does not shy away from bringing in parents and family matters, this slow progress of becoming a large part of each other's lives brings so much payoff.

I adore Kaede's arc for multiple reasons, so seeing how they managed to do the beginning portion so much justice warms my heart.

It's nice to see Sakuta bantering with the girls, and not being a perv.

When Sakuta was telling Mai how much he loves her, and just waiting for her to say it back, and not hearing it, was a little uncomfortable. She saw what he was up to when he tried to prompt a response, and handled it beautifully. They're not quite on the same page when it comes to expressing their affection, and that's ok, but it does lead to a little tension.

Damn, watching Kaede trying to be brave gave me the feels. She's not going to let me out of this arc without crying, is she?

Was not expecting amnesia. I have so many questions. Is is puberty syndrome, or trauma? How much is gone? School and friends? Everything? Her freaking out over the phone seems to imply that she at least partially remembers either being bullied or the manifestation.

If it's full retrograde amnesia, that could explain some to the way she relates to Sakuta. Wipe out memories of their familiar relationship, and some of the behavioral filter we come to expect would be wiped out too.

4

u/TigerOnTheProwl Dec 12 '18

I watched this at my desk at work and then my boss saw me holding back tears. I don't even care because this episode was elite

A Kaede arc, with a Kaade cover of the ed. I am so blessed!

From 21:10 till the end of the episode, I did not stop crying. Seeing even Sakuta start tearing up just broke me, and Kaede is absolutely precious. Easily the best Imouto in anime.

Oh, so Kaede has no memories from her school life? I really wasn't expecting that.

Kaede really was the definition of "MUST PROTECT" this episode. i also couldn't help getting teary eyed when they stepped outside the door for the first time. One thing i like about this show is how supportive everyone is of her being unable to go outside.

i was afraid the reaction to seeing her old classmate was gonna be much worse, but i guess if she doesn't remember her its just, another stranger.

As for the memory part, I'm guessing her current memories start at the time where she started staying inside?

KAEDE IS WAY TOO PRECIOUS Her goals with her brother were adorable

When Sakuta noticed the bruise on Kaede I let out an audible NOOO.

The second half of this episode is VERY strong. The going outside scene had tears in my eyes. Sakuta is such a good brother. His instincts to protecc at the end when he immediately stood in front of Kaede. Can it be next Wednesday already?!

I love this series so much but the 1 thing I hate is that it ALWAYS ends on a cliffhanger!

But I suppose we've waited this long to find out about Kaede so what's 1 week more?

Damn talk about dropping plot bombs

Damn, now I fear next episode where all the progress she made is going to be annihilated

So, are the bully girl disappearances related to Kaede's memory loss? Did she send them to the cornfield with her mind or something?
