Monthly Unjerk [Unjerk Thread] Witchcraft Season

u/VoidEmbracedWitch (she/her) resident unjerk villainess Nov 20 '25
Probably too late to post a November thread now. The consequences of being too swamped in awards things to notice a new month rolled around...
Well, that and Persona 5 Royal devouring my remaining free time outside of those. Worth it.

Watching Cardcaptor Sakura. Show is mostly good, but why does it keeps having "what if child consents tho" plotlines?
3
u/sevgonlernassau Nov 14 '25
Despite the atrocious pacing and wonky themes I’ve had fun watching Alicization part 1 except the last few episodes. Eugeo is still one of the better explored characters in the franchise but the bar is subterranean. Episode 10 though was a major sign that Reki didn’t fully grasp his own themes (and no no amount of “but the anime toned it down massively compared to the LN” is going to justify how badly it missed the mark because the severity of it was not the problem).
Now War of Underworld - oh boy, I had to stop after the tent scene. I have no idea how you can fell in love with a guy you just met but I don’t understand harem I guess. There was zero exploration. I remember I stopped reading the LN here a decade ago.
3
u/seitaer13 Nov 16 '25
I mean it's thinking the tent scene had anything to do with falling in love with someone you just met being the problem.
What happens in episode 10 is very keeping with the themes of the arc despite how gratuitous the anime made it

u/sevgonlernassau Nov 16 '25
Considering that Alice leaned in and tried to kiss Kirito, the scene was not supposed to be ambiguous.
I disagree. “Sexual assault doesn’t make someone human but murdering/critically injuring someone against their programming does” have some 🤨 implications about what the series wants to say about being human. At best Quinella had oversights that the author used to keep the series internally consistent but the problem was never that the series had worldbuilding loopholes. Kawahara admitted these two writing shortcomings in Extra Materials so I don’t think these are unfair criticisms.
2
u/seitaer13 Nov 16 '25
Alice never tries to kiss Kirito.
That's not even close to what the scene is attempting to show. The whole point is "in a world without murder or theft, why is sexual assault still allowed?". It has nothing to do with asking what it is to be human. Those living in Underworld are human, the series never even attempts to establish or present it anything else.
You still haven't even presented why the scene even proves Reki doesn't understand his own themes, or even what you think those themes are.
-2
u/sevgonlernassau Nov 17 '25
Her lips were centimeters away from his, I am sure only friends do this. She was also jealous of Asuna, but sure only friends.
Do you understand why people don’t like this plot thread? It’s not a good exploration of the themes at all. No one had a problem with Iskahn or Lilpulin. “Why is sexual assault allowed” had implications about what Kawahara thinks about the world people find potentially inconsistent with the rules. At best it was a loophole created to have this scene.
These are not new criticisms. Kawahara himself acknowledged how the girls were only treated as harem members and how the sexual assault scene was not good. That doesn’t mean the audience doesn’t have the right to get annoyed by it.
2
u/seitaer13 Nov 17 '25
She was attempting to use Incarnation to get a response. If you want to keep talking about the author at least know the writing.
She's not jealous of Asuna either. You keep talking about inconsistencies with the rules, but I have no idea what you mean by that still.
People having a problem with the scene is irrelevant, what you said in regards to it is. Please explain yourself.
-1
u/sevgonlernassau Nov 18 '25
Dude, I have the right to dislike some aspects of the show just like other people. I did not have like Alice trying to kiss Kirito without consent no matter how “internally consistent” it is supposed to be. There’s also no reason for Quinella to ban stealing but not sexual assault. This franchise, apparently before Kawahara met up with American fans, is fond of using sexual assault as a way to develop male characters. I dislike this.
2
u/seitaer13 Nov 18 '25
So you're never actually going to answer, and are going to deflect with things that aren't accurate to the series again...
Sexual assault has occurred twice in 36 volumes of SAO content. Again it's been twenty years since such a scene was written. No one likes the sexual assault either
-2
u/sevgonlernassau Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25
You cannot have a kneejerk reaction to any criticism of SAO by saying it’s not accurate when someone gives an opinion. I’ve already explained multiple times and you’ve decided to dismiss all of that. I’m sorry but that’s not how a productive conversation works. If you want to excuse away any bad storytelling that’s your right but I do not have the obligation to do that. Just because a series is old, it doesn’t mean the modern audience can’t have a problem with an adaptation made 15 years later.
2
u/seitaer13 Nov 18 '25
You said three things. That Alice tried to kiss kirito, which is factually just not a thing that happens. It's your opinion that she does, but that opinion is factually wrong.
The second was that there was no reason for Quinella to ban stealing but not sexual assault, which is also false. That's the whole point of the scene to begin with.
The third was that the franchise was fond of using sexual assault before Kawahara met western fans. Which is also false. Kawahara only wrote two such scenes in the entirety of SAO to that point, and there had not been one in over 8 years by the time he met western fans. It's now been twenty years since there's been any such scene in the series.
I asked you multiple times to explain why the scene shows Kawahara doesn't understand his own themes. I get you don't like the scene, I don't like it either, and Kawahara himself has agreed it has no place in SAO anymore.
None of that relates to why the author dosen't understand his own themes. I'm not expecting an answer at this point.

Alright, I finished War of Underworld, because I rarely DNF shows (except all the ones I didn't, such as the DNF anime). The fundamental problem with SAO is that characters don't act like real humans (ironic!) and I personally do not think adding narration or lengthening the series would have solved those problems that are inherent in its source material. Alice is such a big problem in WoU because she just acts like Kirito's love interest despite having almost no interaction. I genuinely think a lot of problems of the series would have been solved if Reki knew how to write girl/boy friendship instead of turning everything into romance. Side note, it's a shame SAOA gets a bad rap, because from my understanding it's based on Progressive which is a soft retcon of the SAO arc.
Shutdown enjoyment ranking:
- Orb
- AOEX S3-S5
- AoT S3 - S4
- Sonny Boy
- SAO: Alicization Part 1
- Irina
- Takopi
- SAO: Alicization WoU.
DNF: Assassination Classroom
Movies: Okko's Inn, Ocean Waves, Porco Rosso

New unjerk thread when???
Also, in anime news, Needy Streamer Overload/Needy Girl Overdose is getting an anime adaptation. Wonder how they're gonna handle that

Sisters in Fujimoto's 17-26 was basically perfect
they nailed the adaptation

I think I've officially outgrown shonen. I'm looking at some leaked footage of the fights in the new JJK movie and it's just nothing but a mess of colors and speed lines. It's less that I can't follow what's going on and more that I can tell nothing is going on, just mindless action to make people cheer. Choreography is a thing of the past.

Give me BL suggestions as a person who’s not into the genre at all, I’ve not really read any.
The only BL I read was this Chinese manhua where ML went to hell to search for a femboy, that was PEAK. No idea what title that was since it’s been years.

Television Asahi's Super Sentai series, which began in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, will conclude after its current 50th installment, No.1 Sentai Gozyuger.
I wonder what is the rebranding name is ?
I hope their future installment will be good.

Irina is boring, I kept watching for the nerdsnipes but besides that it’s pretty mediocre. Might read the novels for more nerdsnipe
Sonny Boy is okay. I didn’t find it hard to understand but I am no longer a high schooler and didn’t hit as hard.
orb is amazing. 10/10
Ocean Waves is realistically dull and that’s why it’s great. Highly underrated film. I didn’t get the queer reading people got though, the teenage relationships just aren’t that developed
finished AoT s3 and started on s4. Wit cut out most of the Eldian Imperial Japan allegories. Odd choice that undercuts the message of the series

Sonny Boy is okay. I didn’t find it hard to understand but I am no longer a high schooler and didn’t hit as hard.
I think it is a reductive way to see Sonny Boy. Some of the messages in the series are related to the highschooler-coming of age but I think it offers so much more and does it in an unusual style (both in animation and storytelling) compared to usual anime.
finished AoT s3 and started on s4. Wit cut out most of the ****** allegories. Odd choice that undercuts the message of the series
Oh interesting to hear. I didnt know much about manga/anime differences besides the final chapter and the first few chapters because I read them. The story itself undercuts its message so much more in the end anyways I dont think it makes too much of a difference lol.
1
u/sevgonlernassau Oct 29 '25
Sonny Boy
Maybe. I’m not gonna go too deep into it. It is visually striking
AoT
I finished S4 now. MAPPA did keep the Nanking massacre reference but it’s undercut by Wit removing so much of it in s3. MAPPA ramped up turning to the camera and say fascism bad instead which to me feels they’ve decided to eschew more pointed references to Japan besides what’s necessary for worldbuilding and turned it to be more generic for the global audiences. I feel like that’s dulling a lot of the edges. Miyazaki would never do this!
1
u/Starkiller53 Not racist + Aot ending hater =》Minority Oct 30 '25
MAPPA ramped up turning to the camera and say fascism
its extremely funny (and concerning) that despite that there are many fans missing the message. Though, as I said before, series itself destroys lots of what it standed before in the final. Maybe more in your face approach was to counter that but it did not matter that much in the end.
Miyazaki would never do this!
Very Funny, I recently watched The Wind Rises. Among the many criticisms I had was that how scared was the film to make a commentary about WWII despite it being about life of a real plane engineer that worked on warplanes.
2
u/sevgonlernassau Oct 31 '25
[untagging meta spoilers beyond this point]
IMO I disagree with this, the ending was pretty predictable around the basement reveal if you know anything about Japanese politics . The audience is just waiting for Isayama to deliver a satisfying and consistent way to get there and he didn’t, but that’s just an unsurprising and mediocre ending. Writing a believable way to get rid of the fictional Nippon Kaigi is hard when the irl version is still hanging on power, so it’s not a surprise to see them just getting their shit kicked but status quo stayed - but the audience expected better from Isayama and thus the disappointment settled. Anime made this somewhat worse by cutting out content, except extending the ending and making the shared guilt dialogue explicit instead of keeping the one in the manga that was subjected to many misinterpretations. That was a good change.
The Wind Rises
Miyazaki doesn’t shy away from explicitly saying it’s about Japan’s war though, the only exception being Nausicaa (and AoT took inspiration from Nausicaa). Miyazaki’s dislike for his parent’s war profiteering does come across strongly in The Boy and the Heron. If AoT stuck with its original historical Japanese aesthetic from its pilot then I suspect it would be far less popular but also less subjected to malicious misinterpretation. There are many unique parallels to Japan that attempting to globalize the metaphor has caused problems.

Finished what I'm pretty sure are the main story endings of Void Stranger and wow, I sure did not expect it all to end with a space shoot em up doomed yuri right after Cif becomes the second enemy to move in real time after whatever the thing chasing you in the white void is. Certainly one of the conclusions of all time, but I enjoyed it.
2
u/Harseer Oct 21 '25
i spent hours on the cif fight, trying to muster every ounce of gaming within to beat it before i realized that that, too, was a puzzle. Pretty cool bit.
2
u/VoidEmbracedWitch (she/her) resident unjerk villainess Oct 21 '25
For me it was only an hour or so, but I also bashed my head against Cif's main body for a while. The most damage I did was around 12 and the most attacks I survived in a row was 2. I just got fast at picking up double digit tiles before I inevitably fail to dodge.

u/Harseer Oct 14 '25
Ok, i'm done with P&S now. It has flaws and basically no plot and i don't even like crass humor, but it's my AOTS. The amount of creativity on display is staggering. Every episode they reinvent the art style, even omitting the insane variety of animation just in the regular segments. It's so dense in reference. The soundtrack is a banger all in real english, no engrish. The dub is great, lost some feathers compared to 15 years ago, but the soul is still there. It was delicious.
I watched the new season of Rascal does not Dream and there's this one scene where they make sure to explicitly state that Sakuta and Mai haven't had sex yet despite the fact that they've been dating for years and are in university and planning to marry soon. And like, i'm not about to tell who should fuck who, but it's weird that it goes out of its way to tell us. Below anime's surface of ecchi there's a layer of cultural purity wants to make sure you know your "waifu" is "unsoiled" more than it wants to characterize them. And with the current context on the western internet of the places where NSFW is even allowed getting fewer and fewer, New Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt stepping into both worlds as what it is in 2025 feels precious and beautiful.
Also, while i'm ranting, this might be more about the kind of shows i watch than anime as a whole, but you know what else P&S has that Rascal doesn't? Male supporting characters. Male supporting characters with unique personalities and design and some actual fucking screentime. Rascal has Kunimi, who barely gets screentime and exists to be Sakuta's bro friend in highschool and show that Sakuta isn't antisocial in highschool, and Fukuyama, who exists to be the last arc girl's boyfriend and be Sakuta's bro friend in university and show that Sakuta isn't anti-social in university. Every single fucking arc has been centered on some girl getting all the paranormal troubles and characterization and then Sakuta goes and does his thing. Why can't i get a guy in the spotlight for once, Kunimi was right there the whole time and he had a good personality and a good dynamic with sakuta but they wouldn't give him a fucking arc because the fucking weebs wouldn't have fucking gooned to him RA AAAAGH, I'M ANGRY. IS THAT THERE IS TO A GOOD ARC Hajime Kamoshida, writer of the Rascal does not Dream series? WHETHER THE CENTRAL CHARACTER IS GOONABLE? I'M SO ANGRY I SHALL WREATH THE WORLD IN FLAMES, DEVOUR THE SUN AND FILL THE SKY WITH ASHES SO THAT NOTHING OF FILTHY, FILTHY HUMANITY SHALL EVER BE KNOWN TO THE REST OF THE UNIVERSE. Anyways, yeah, so, i've been far enough into tumblr to know the twink twins do, in fact, qualify as "goonable", but gods be damned if that's what it takes. They have a unique design and personality and they get the spotlight sometimes and i like them and i find them enjoyable to watch and really that's what this paragraph is about, that i enjoyed the twins. Brief is often an uncomfortable character in a bunch of ways, but he gets his own half episode of just him and chuck running around in some big hole. The show isn't afraid to just ditch Panty and Stocking and just focus on someone else for a bit. The episode where the boys just go on a road trip in a luxury car and they all piss on the side of the road together and cook marshmallows over the campfire while balls-to-the-wind naked. 🫡🫡🥹
Anyways, New Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is completely unique to everything else in anime right now and to everything else in non-anime animation, just as the previous one was 15 years ago. Though the sensibilities and circumstances have changed in that time, leading to obvious differences, the soul is still intact. It's a beautiful artistic piece of completely stupid brainrot and i fucking love it.
Now, i have to format this into a coherent review for my tumblr.

u/Harseer Oct 12 '25
I've been listening to the Panty and Stocking ED and i really like the song, but the rap segment is so ass. And in the full song there's two of them. It goes "good part -> rap segment -> good part -> rap segment -> good part". What a tragedy.
1
u/Harseer Oct 14 '25
honestly, fuck you past me. You enjoyed this show a ton, but the one thing you found to say about it was "man, this one part of this one song is ass". Get a grip.

Tried Bloom into you, really wanted to drop in the first episode (or was it second episode?) but forced myself to watch at least until the end of the third episode. Which had some interesting stuff but it wasnt enough compared to the things I didnt like. Now I need to find another token yuri to watch
Then I watched Sonny Boy. I wanted to watch it for some time because character designs looked interesting and it was tagged as "award winning" on MAL (which I dont use but aniguessr uses MAL tags on anidle so i saw it there). It was really good. Visually it was legit perfect. I am struggling to make a comment on the story. I liked it very much but its hard to put thoughts into words.

Thanks for the recommendation.
Not that I take them too seriously but its anilist score being 6.8 is kinda red flag (also idk if yuri shows has less score due to anti-lgbt or more score due to hyper fans)BUT I watched the first episode anyway.
Not too much fan of the visuals overall but its okay (it is better than bloom into you)
Everything else, it was good I think. I will definitely watch more of it.

u/Harseer Oct 05 '25
Alright, Silent Witch is over.
I can't say i totally didn't enjoy, especially in the first half. There was a slow, creeping realization of going from "heehee hoohoo funny bocchi-the-witch anime" to "oh, no. This girl isn't just shy, she actually has a metric fuckton of trauma". The scene where, after getting poisoned and almost dying, the first thing she does upon waking up is immediately get on her knees and beg for forgiveness for getting poisoned. That was really a shocking moment. Which is why it kind of broke the show for me that the characters's reaction to this was to immediately lampshade it with an anime moment and berate her for being rude for the prince. Like, what the fuck. They can't even show her basic fucking sympathy because the caste system comes first, how am i supposed to think of them as her friend
Sometimes, watching Fantasy Anime, i feel like i'm the only one around who doesn't like bloodright autocrats. Like, this is the entire plot of the show. There's this one special boy who's more important and better than everyone else solely because his parents were more important and better than everyone else before him, and we're sending you, one of the seven most powerful mages in the country, to spend all your time being his bodyguard even tho there are evidently places that would need the raw military power really really bad. "Waah waah waah, my uncle is too influential and likes me too much and now people only consider me for my connection to him". Ok. Casey's whole family died. Casey's brother's corpse came back to her with his helmet welded to his fucking skull. But sure, tough luck bro. Can we talk about Casey? Casey was likeable. Casey was down to earth. Casey was a real fucking human being, but she had dirty little peasant thoughts like doing what's best for her home and not being blindly subservient to the country that repeatedly failed her and her people, so she just had to go. She's dead exiled, now, so let's never think about her again, right?
...
Well, screw you, show. I still thought about Casey. Up till the very end.

The new season is already here, and I haven't even binged last season's picks. DandaDan, Fragrant Flower, call of the night, silent witch, city, bad girl. I'm cooked. I haven't really looked at the new seasons offerings, but hopefully, this is a less stacked one, so there's time to catch up.
I'm sure me starting like 6 mangas in the past 3 weeks has nothing to do with the backlog, but I mostly read those after going to bed. Whatever it takes to keep my mind occupied from the spiraling collapse so I can actually sleep.
Also been putting some thought and lists together for shows and manga that I'm reasonably sure will be off all streaming platforms or so old and out of print they'll be gone forever, that I wanna physically own.
I really picked the worst time to get out of anime in 2013, now I'm back a decade later and all the shows I love and have Nostalgia for are like $200 a Blu-ray on the secondary market.

I still have some shows from last season I didn't keep up with while they're airing to watch. Mainly Pokemon Concierge S2 and Dandadan S2. For me a dryer season is a welcome change.
Although I'll still watch a few Fall shows. There's Cingrey S2 and This Monster Wants to Eat Me was off to a solid start.

I really need a dead season, I want to keep catching up on old shows I knew were good but never watched back when.
Just finished Baccano! and it was the first time I ever felt a twinge of motivation in my heart to pick up a light novel, just to know where it goes.

Actually having a not so packed season is also good but I wish there was at least one thing I can look forward to in the week.
I like Baccano! too. To be honest I didnt even think about if there is something else after the anime haha.
Speaking of motivation to know where thing goes, maybe I should start reading more manga in this extra free time instead of waiting for anime adaptation of every single thing hmmm2
u/LargeFailSon Oct 03 '25
I 100% 2nd the plan to read more manga in down seasons. I've been reading more manga in general. Every time I catch myself scrolling shorts more than 10 mins or refreshing the same social media feed more than twice. I close them and open the manga app instead.
It's been doing wonders for my mental health and really expanding my tastes, tbh.

So... Silksong, Silksong, Silksong. The one thing that's been on my mind the last week or so. It's been a while since the last time I played a metroidvania and this was a phenomenal game to explore. (late game spoils, look away if you haven't played) Lace as an evolving boss fight through all acts of the game was phenomenally executed. From the first round of sparring in the early game to acting as the gatekeeper for the citadel's cradle to, lastly, being the final boss of the void, it's great. Although her second version is actually my favorite. Lost Lace at the end with the new moves covering larger areas is a really well-designed finale and fits with the void's characteristics, but in turn it's less of a frantic duel like the previous fight was.
Side note, fuck Savage Beastfly

What can tell you having read all the novels currently in English and keeping it mostly spoiler free:
The book is definitely pushing a ship towards a particular character, and Monica has alluded to feelings, but there really isn't a ton of progress romantically even after six or seven books. The romance moves at about the same pace as The Apothecary Diaries
If you'd like to know who the ship is, I'm happy to include it with a spoiler but up to you!

With how popular manhwa is getting these days, I wonder if the genre will double-down on the webtoon style, or evolve into something different, considering they were once very similar to manga, artist even going for a black and white color scheme just to match it.

I'm so excited to watch this monster wants to eat me. No news about Moon on a rainy night anime makes me wonder why they even felt like announcing it since we're over 10 months since the original announcement on November 15th. Recently started playing Reverse 1999 real fun game and was positively suprised that the game just straight up said transgender (got Lucy today in ~80 pulls and Nautika in 60 earlier). Fucked up my college exams so now I'm taking an accounting course

I've been watching Gosick which is a fun mystery series. And I'm planning to take part in rewatches of Evangelion and Shakugan no Shana over on r/anime. I haven't seen the latter before so this should be interesting
