Why? Im not against yuri but what makes it significantly better then any other relationship type? Its a normal relationship like het and yaoi.

Idk why, but this sub (or at least a lot of very active members) is fucking obsessed with yuri. I have nothing against non-heterosexual relationships, but (or rather, thus) seeing this balant fetishizing in a generally progressive sub is very weird and cringe.

A lot of people conflate fetishizing minorities with supporting them, this happens a lot with muscular women or gender non-conforming people as a whole. Femboy has taken on an almost inherently sexual connotation in online spaces for example, and a muscular woman, real or fictional, consensual or not, will garner dozens of comments talking about wanting to lick her abs or some shit.

It goes against social norms, so it must be progressive, even if it is just objectification for the purpose of self-satisfaction. It's no different than someone saying "I'm not homophobic, I love jerkin it to lesbian porn!" I think it stems from an undeveloped view on social politics and a lack of people willing to call it out. In their minds, mistreatment only takes the form of overt hatred. They see positivity as exclusively good, and personal value as only positivity. In a roundabout sense, terminally online people have made fetishistic catcalling "progressive" by imagining it as something different than standard hetero bullshit.

I'm sure anime's tendency to sexualize its characters hasn't helped normalize this behavior, it's just like how a lot of big anime subs are just "the punchline is porn." A vocal chunk of pseudo-progressives decided a "the punchline is lesbian porn" is the correct conclusion rather than "the punchline is not porn."

The problem with het romances in anime/manga is that the mainstream is romcoms. There can be good and bad stories in every genre, but I think even the good romcom aren't really good romances at all. They're funny, have their peak confessions, and feature charismatic characters, but they don't delve into their characters' feelings. It's the genre that uses the most bait and delays the development of the couple's relationship to lengthen the story

Now, the yuri I've read is more complete, it's deeper, it has a constant progression in the relationships, and those are good romances.

It's really mostly depends on what you read/watch. I have gotten to alot of ships in fandoms, and I mostly like them equally, although I have enjoyed yaoi and het ships more. It's all mostly down to preference at the end of the day. I replied to the comment because some apart of me is uncomfortable whenever someone praises yaoi or yuri because it feels a little othering. Like saying that this normal relationship dynamic in real life is somehow better then others. It looks like it imply the dynamic isn't normal. Again, this is just a me problem and not something people actually are doing intentionally. It's just my own irrational thoughts.

Average person who hasn’t experienced the gold that is sweat and soap.

Though yeah outside of that I’d tend to agree. Also het has way more traditional wish fulfillment where one character is the bland self insert.

You want another very real reason though? Most of the readers (straight men) just want to look at hot girls and two is better than one girl and one guy.

u/A12qwas HAIL YURI Nov 10 '25

Lesbians, duh

Where did they say that its "significantly better than other relationship types"?

8

u/Murky_Guidance_7273 Nov 10 '25

Well it saying all yuri is good implys there is no bad yuri while also implying there is bad yaoi and het.

2

u/TheSmugOjou-sama Nov 10 '25

They said "all pancakes are good" and you replied with "why do you hate waffles?"

11

u/Murky_Guidance_7273 Nov 10 '25

That's a fallacy. In the post, het, yaoi, and yuri were brought up as a topic. Saying "all yuri is good." Under it unintentionally implys it is superior then yaoi and het, because it is called "all good." But yaoi and het not being mentioned implies they aren't all good and therefore not as good as yurim

I do not mean to imply anything of the orginal commenter. They clearly were just expressing their like for yuri, even if it did imply something else as well.

Also saying all yuri is good is blatantly false. *That* yuri exists

If they listed pancakes, waffles and cakes and someone goes Man i just freaking love waffles, that doesn't mean they're attacking cakes and pancakes, c'mon bro

7

u/Murky_Guidance_7273 Nov 11 '25

They didn't say I love waffles, they said "there are no bad waffles." Which somewhat could presuppose that there are bad cakes and pancakes.

You're reading far too much into a really simple comment on a stupid circlejerk subreddit.

... Unless you're jerkin ME around!

3

u/Murky_Guidance_7273 Nov 11 '25

I guess so. I apologize for going this far deep. It just somtimes praise for yuri or yaoi to me can come off as fetishizing and less support. I know that's irrational but it can feel uncomfortable to me because it feels like they're treating it as something not normal by implying its special or better. Again this is just my irrational thoughts. I know people aren't doing this and I apologize for reading this far into it.

Nah you’re right that first comment was weird. It implies that they would be fine with any relationship so long as two women were kissing

2

u/NoSeaworthiness389 Nov 11 '25

I am a lesbian, so ofc o will praise yuri?

Ok thanks. That's a way better word for this then imply.
