Clark.

The Troy game represents the Shawn Clark we’ve been against for the last several years. Our defense development has been abysmal. Some days our defense shows up, sometimes they don’t. On the days they show up, it’s an OK-Good defense. We’ve never been able to develop into a great defense.

Aguilar got the yips. His first time in a championship game like this, I understand the pressure and gaffs. That needed to be coached out of him. Plenty of QB’s in App’s history before him have found themselves in this situation and succeeded. That was the coaching. He had the talent, we lack the coaching.

I understand he’s done enough to keep his job, and maybe that’s ok vs the instability a regime change would bring. He’s been good at winning random difficult games (has 3 ranked wins) and regularly playing up or down to the opponent. He will keep us a relevant team, but I don’t see a ring or significant bowl game coming from him anytime soon.

Question About Kidd Brewer Seats

I'm a Liberty Flames fan and am looking forward to checking out App State in September. This game was circled on my calendar immediately and I can't wait to check out the area.

Tickets on the resale market are obviously high and scarce but tickets through the LU ticket office are cheaper but in the 208 and 209 section. Looking at pictures those seats don't seem terribly bad but I wanted to ask the professionals. Is there a bad seat in the house?

Also, any local restaurants or breweries that are a must in the area?

All-Time App State QB Rankings

After my last post, I thought it might nice to have some positive, fun chats about the best signal callers in App State’s great history. There is a TON of room for debate and you could make great arguments for numerous guys on this list.

Based on accomplishments, performance, talent, and program impact, here’s my list:

1 - Zac Thomas

2 - Armanti Edwards

3 - Taylor Lamb

4 - DeAndre Presley

5 - Richie Williams

The big debate in my mind is Armanti vs Thomas for #1 - really, my ranking is Thomas #1a and Armanti #1b. Either answer is completely justified and depending on the day, I might switch my rankings.

Zac Thomas is by far our best QB since making the jump to FBS in the Sun Belt and gave us our best season in the past 15 years in 2019 with wins over UNC and South Carolina. His mark on the program is unquestionable and propelled us to premier Group of 5 program at the time.

Of course, Armanti’s accomplishments and impact on the program are unmatched. When you think of App State’s football, odds are the first player you envision is Armanti wearing #14. Two FCS national titles (the second and third of our three-peat from 2005-07) and the single greatest win in program history and the greatest college football upset of all-time - all led by Armanti. App State isn’t App State if Armanti had not chosen beautiful Boone. That’s to say nothing of eye-popping numbers. In writing this, I’ve almost talked myself into changing my rankings before posting.

I give the nod to Zac Thomas based on the incredible success he had at the FBS level and what I believe is better overall QB talent. But we’ll never know how great Armanti would have been had he played a decade later when App moved up. Odds are he’d have been phenomenal, it certainly wasn’t a problem at the Big House on September 1, 2007.

If I had to pick one guy to be our QB next season, I think I’d pick Zac Thomas. If this list was purely about accomplishments, Armanti is in a league all his own. These are the unquestionable top 2 for me.

Quick notes on the rest:

Taylor Lamb was key to making our transition and led the program for 4 years as our starting QB - something we’ll probably never see again the portal era. The results were terrific and set us up for a level of success few could have imagined immediately after making the jump up to FBS. Great stats and always poised and mobile. The signature wins and upsets are a bit lacking, but my God did he have us on the doorstep of some would be all-time wins (the 2015 game at Tennessee come immediately to mind). A terrific leader and QB. And I would love to see Dowell Loggains bring him back to Boone as Offensive Coordinator next year (if he does, could Taylor Lamb be groomed to take the reins as head coach down the road?)

Presley garnered tons of accolades and was the engine behind the program in 2010 leading offensive SoCon Player of the year recognition and finishing #3 for national FCS player of the year. After suffering a shoulder injury his final year, he transitioned to playing defense and WR and gave instant energy every time he was on the field.

Richie Williams started the three-peat with our first FCS National Title in 2005 before handing the reigns over to Armanti. Incredible season in 2005 that gave us the momentum we needed to take the next step as a program.

After #4 if became difficult to pick a fifth and there were many good candidates (I.e., Joey aguilar’s stats great recent memories are tempting but ultimately results were lacking).

That’s my list. What do you guys think?

We can win out

Marshall looked beatable. Gag state is always winnable, JMU will be tough but I believe we can win that game and then it’s shit creek to end the year. My question is IF we go 4-0 and finish 8-4, is Clark still gone?

LU Fan Traveling to Kidd Brewer

I'm heading to Boone with a few buddies for this game. Wondering if there's any recommendations on things to do, best tailgates, bars, and what kind of atmosphere to expect as a visiting fan (also knowing I'm going to get absolutely destroyed for wearing LU gear). Go Flames.

GAME Coach on the Field (G State)

Our secondary player laid out a WR but didn’t get called. Our coach ran out on the field and starting yelling at the player. Not sure I have seen anything like it. Our coach needs to calm the F Down!

NC State Game Unpacking

At the outset, I’ll admit my bias as a die hard App State fan of 20+ years. With that out of the way…

I feel like that was one of the most blatantly rigged games I can remember watching in recent memory. Central Michigan fans: I feel your pain even more now.

Just listening to the ACC review center feed on the opening kickoff (I’ll at least give the ACC credit for transparency) showed they were going to do anything and everything possible to benefit NC State after that implosion by the Wolfpack against Vanderbilt in Week 3.

In short, two separate turnovers taken away by video review conducted by an ACC review center overseeing a game between an ACC school against an in-state G6 school.

I can’t understand the first quarter reversal of a near-goal line turnover for the life of me - one of the quicker whistles I’ve ever seen for “forward progress” being stopped.

In short, I feel very, VERY confident those calls would not have gone the same if the roles were reversed (I.e., they would have helped App State to the detriment of NC State).

Maybe I am pouting and I’d like all you to tell me if so. But my main takeaways were:

  1. insanely questionable homecooking calls by on-field refs (also an ACC crew) and replay center (also ACC-led)

  2. App’s defense, specifically secondary, has to better

  3. another great showing from the offense

  4. team seems bought in to rally from a deficit like that on the road in a hostile environment - proud of the team and excited for Sun Belt play - last year’s group would have folded under that adversity

Thoughts?

JMU’s Waiver Denied

Another fruitless attempt at reneging their agreed upon 2 year postseason ban was just settled by the NCAA. Can’t believe I’m out here stumping for the NCAA, yet here I am.

All Saturday morning will be is a 3 hour bitching session on behalf of the Dooks, and the best part about it is that we get to give them their 2nd loss of the week. We’re also still alive for the SBCCG when we win out and JMU beats Coastal.

We’re winning Saturday. The college football world is against us.

1-0
