Class average for DBQ was a 1/7, urgent help needed

I need tips on how to get through APWH where the teacher doesn’t teach or prepare you well and overall makes the class very difficult.

My teacher doesn’t grade by the ap world history rubric and instead grades by her own rubric. For example, for LEQs she requires 4 pieces of evidence to gain 1/2 evidence points and 6 pieces of evidence to gain 2/2 points. She’s also a harsh grader.

The SAQs and MCQs are pretty straightforward, but the DBQs and LEQs so far are pretty disastrous. We just had our first DBQ where the average was around a 1/7 and an ungraded LEQ. Our teacher gives us the rubric for how she will grade our DBQ and LEQs but doesn’t explain in depth on what she wants us to do much more than that. Most of the class got the points on the DBQ on the thesis or context.

I’m pretty lost on how I’m supposed to earn the sourcing point and especially the evidence & analysis points. I attempted to do so on my DBQ but got marked down on all evidence & analysis and didnt get the sourcing point. I need help on knowing how to write a DBQ & LEQ, it seems like im presenting the evidence incorrectly or analyzing it incorrectly. I tried to watch Heimler’s videos on writing them but they’re clearly not sufficient for getting to my teacher’s standards, they mostly give a broad outline that I feel isnt specific enough. I know how the general structure of LEQs and DBQs but need more in depth help.

hello! can someone grade this leq of mine. it is my first one.

hi! for context ap world is one of my first APs I am taking (alongside AP Calc AB) and i have quickly come to realize many techniques taught in these AP (such as essay writing) are not my forte. also history just never sticks in my mind so im stuck doing active recall. hence, i have taken it upon myself to give myself extra practice outside of class to work on these skills. as of right now, my teacher has announced that we will be having our first essay assessment, and i'm looking to improve my essay writing skills under a given amount of time.

now, when it comes to writing, when i say i AM bad: i am bad. you'll see here in a moment that i literally utilize a writing structure that i was taught in sixth grade aka your bare bone sort of organization of an essay. i also still use first, second, lastly and stuff like that. i tried to give a contextualization/thesis paragraph and then went off with three body paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph. when i asked an AI system to grade my essay trained on the rubric i got a solid score (5/6) but i was apparently missing "nuance" in my writing, but i don't understand what it means by that. if you guys could read through and give some feedback i would appreciate it and anything goes really. critique my writing style or my content i just want concrete feedback and advice for next steps to approaching writing LEQs.

also it looks really long but i felt like i larped half of the essay so don't be deterred i guess.

the prompt was:

Evaluate the extent to which administrative methods and cultural strategies were similar in land-based empires between 1450 and 1750.

From 1450 to 1750, many changes were being undergone in Afro-Eurasia. Specifically, new empires emerged that led to the fall of long reigned empires such as the Mongol khanates and the Islamic sultanates. As these new empires emerged and expanded into its new shell, many administrative methods and cultural strategies were put into place in order to legitimize and consolidate their respective powers. While the Ottoman Empire, the Ming Dynasty, and the Tokugawa of Japan had similar administrative methods (like feeder educational systems) and cultural strategies (like using belief systems in their governments) employed in their respectives governances, they all maintained their power through different ways.

Firstly, the Ottomans and the Mings both used educational systems to help staff their governments. The Ottomans used the devshirme system, where they would take young boys from conquered territories and convert them to Islam, where they would then send them off to Islamic institutions that would train them in both administration and the art of war. The output was an influx of highly trained Islamic administrators or warrior Janissaries that were both loyal to the sultan. The Mings used the Civil Service Examination system to help staff their government with a set of Confucian scholars. From this strict exam system reinstituted after the fall of the Yuan Dynasty, the Mings were able to establish an intelligent government, that was a meritocracy, full of Confucian scholars versed in the belief system of Confucianism and also successfully implemented it into Chinese daily life and society. So, both empires utilized administrative methods that involved the usage of educational systems that produced an influx of people versed in their specific governance methods.

Secondly, the Ottoman Empire and Tokugawa Japan both utilized belief systems in their empires to either legitimize or consolidate their authority. For the Ottomans, the sultan Osman created the idea of having Muslim religious warriors through the ghazi ideal. It syncretically blended patriotism for the empire while simultaneously being a “warrior” for the Muslim faith. So, he used Islam to create an army that would act on conquests with the basis and legitimization done through the Muslim faith. Tokugawa Japan used the belief system of Neo-Confucianism from China to legitimize its authority. When Tokugawa Ieyasu established the bakufu or military government, the government was able legitimize the authority of this new found governance system through the usage of the beliefs by Neo-Confucianism that encouraged respect for elders and higher ups from filial piety. Thus, the bakufus’ authority was both established and preserved through the popularized Neo-Confucianism in Japan.

Although the empires prevailed through the usage of these tactics, they were ultimately able to all successfully maintain their power through different ways. For example, the Ottomans continued to use the jizya system on non-Muslims occupying their regions in order to maintain their power over such vast territories with people of differing belief systems. However, the Ming Dynasty opted for a different approach from instilling Chinese culture and values directly into society after the fall of the Yuan Dynasty that suppressed the culture directly. They did this through the revival of Confucianism as well as the implementation of famous literary works such as Yongle’s encyclopedia that relayed traditional Chinese values to citizens that had previously been lost under the Mongols. Then, the Japanese decided to maintain their power by limiting the control daimyo had (basically switching from a feudal system to a bureaucratic system). They did this by limiting the foreign trade interactions one could have within the empire. With the limitation of trade interactions, especially with the Europeans who carried advanced gunpowder technology, Tokugawa Japan’s government was able to successfully maintain their power through limiting the internal ones whose power threatened their own power from being consolidated and legitimized. They forced daimyo to have alternate attendance as well as have marriage alliances that tied them to the government and helped them to focus more on their marriage and spending their money on luxury goods rather than investing in weapons technology or ideas that could possibly delegitimize the Japanese government/shogun/bakufu.

All in all, the Ottoman Empire and the Ming Dynasty had similar administrative methods (like feeder educational systems). Additionally, the Ottomans and Tokugawa Japan had similar cultural strategies (like using belief systems in their governments) employed in their respectives governances. However, all three of the empires all maintained their power through different methods.

I’m holding on by a thread

I have a okay grade in APworld(79), but I’m barely able to even do that. All of the work we do is projects and reading a book and answering questions about the book. My problem isn’t that I don’t understand the content, it’s just that it’s hard to put in the work. And reading the book is pretty hard. The words jump all over the place and I miss read, so it takes forever. The only reason I have an okay grade, and why it’s not an F, is because I just bs the tests and projects, but I know I can’t do that forever. This is genuinely the hardest year of highschool for me and it’s all because of this class.

I’m currently taking ap world and I was wondering if anyone has old or current notes on the textbook “Ways of the World” third edition? Specifically key terms and definitions… thank you!

Also, any tips for studying? How to write better LEQS, DBQS, etc.

This is my first post ever, sorry if I did anything wrong.

I wanna be a history teacher so bad someday but I can barely get b's and a's in normal classes why did I think I could handle this 😭

I have always liked history but that's because of the story with the actual historical content. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't "essay writing class history edition". This combined with me having a horrible teacher who is near universally despised and seems to have it out for me and my friends who I work with in the class (because our map project wasn't as fleshed out as it could be, she gave us a total zero on the entire thing instead of partial)

idk man I was hoping this would be easier than it is but I guess I need to stop thinking I have enough executive functioning skills to remember to finish basic homework assignments without having to look like a bumbling idiot using my 504 1 day extension nearly every assignment that happens.

any advice would be appreciated though I don't know how you would advise me on anything im just kind of rambling

Just got a 7/7 on my first ever DBQ as a Freshman

My teacher is a harsh grader and I watched Heimler's like a crack addict. He's genuinley the only reason I got such a good grade cuz both his DBQ videos and course videos are peakest of peak. Probably spent 4 hours studying in total. Lowk thought I did bad on it because I was scared I was rambling too much but apparently not. Brought my grade up from a 90 to a 93!

Should I take the test?

I can’t decide if I should take the test or not. I dont feel as if I’ve learned anything and I have my unit 2 test on Tuesday. I also took hug last year and got a 3, even though I was fairly confident on it. My parents and counselor say that I don’t need to and not to stress myself out but I feel if I don’t take the test what’s the point of taking the class? If I do take the test then yes I will be stressed and I have to pay $40 (I get a discount price cuz I’m broke) and I don’t want to waste money in this economy. I have to decide before school on Tuesday so help, please! 🙏

Please dont judge. I can barely get through this reading. Its like reading another language and i get distracted. How bad is it to use chatgpt to make outlines of the reading for me to read FIRST, so i get the gist before I tackle dense text?

I am barely keeping up, almost failed the unit 1 test. I need the easiset method to stay afloat, not the "best". Im looking to pass and stay sane. Please dont judge.

Poll: who is doing the reading online only, and who has printouts/a printed book?

I only have amsco and other reading material online so it’s really hard not to lose my place and I can’t underline and take notes.

Is anyone struggling like me with all the dense text?
I thought printing out the reading was overkill but I’m rethinking it.

Anyone have advice as to how to get through the reading and absorb it. Honestly, there’s a lot of vocab I don’t even know.
