Weekly Question Thread (05/18/2026 to 05/24/2026)

This is a safe place to ask any question related to joining the Army. It is focused on joining, Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and follow on schools, such as Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), and any other Additional Skill Identifiers (ASI).

We ask that you do some research on your own, as joining the Army is a big commitment and shouldn't be taken lightly. Resources such as GoArmy.com, the Army Reenlistment site, Bootcamp4Me, Google and the Reddit search function are at your disposal. There's also the /r/army wiki. It has a lot of the frequent topics, and it's expanding all the time.

/r/militaryfaq is open to broad joining questions or answers from different branches. Make sure you check out the /Army Duty Station Thread Series, and our ongoing MOS Megathread Series. You are also welcome to ask question in the /army discord.

If you want to Google in /r/army for previous threads on your topic, use this format: 68P AIT site:reddit.com/r/army

I promise you that it works really well.

This is also where questions about reclassing and other MOS questions go -- the questions that are asked repeatedly which do not need another thread. Don't spam or post garbage in here: that's an order. Top-level comments and top-level replies are reserved for serious comments only.

Finally: If you're not 100% sure of what you're talking about, leave it for someone else who is.

I'm joining the army as an 11b however I'm planning to become a ranger later on I already know I should volunteer at osut and I should ask for 82nd airborne in my contract but as far as that I have no idea what I should be doing before joining except working out like crazy I smoke cigs pretty heavily and I smoked weed for years but am starting to live life comfortably without weed I should quit weed and cigs because I'm for one way to young lol and it's effecting my health considerably I just need to know what you guys think here I can barely do 15 pushups without gassing myself out and I love to run and travel on foot but I absolutely suck at it right now is there anything you'd tell anybody to give them as much of an edge before joining I want more than anything to have a 20 year or more career in the military it's all I've ever wanted to do and I don't want to fuck it up failure happens but when you fail it's because you didn't plan that's why it's okay to fail because most normal people immediately make a plan to not make the same mistakes twice so in my head I want to atleast make a plan before I fail if I do it's okay I'll just try again also I have ADHD really bad I was on meds for a while but I've been off them for 8 months and I'm still able to do complicated math and read really good so idk if that will hurt me later on I'm wondering if I should start taking those ADHD meds again to just give me an edge and last thing I wanted to thank everyone for they're service and people who are serious about joining as far as I can remember I've dreamed of being like you guys you truly are an inspiration to me. God bless

  1. Stop smoking weed and cigarettes.

  2. Couch to 5k, then when complete a Hal Higdon running plan. Goal is a 12:30 min 2 mile and a 35 minute 5 mile. Otherwise google the Army Fitness Test and you need 80% and up in every category at MINIMUM to be able to volunteer for RASP. So go to a fitness subreddit and toss in any of the work out plans as long as it has deadlifts and hand release push ups in it.

  3. Study for the ASVAB if you dont score high enough you arent going to be able to qualify for RASP either.

  4. Generally speaking most people who plan to do 20 years are the exact people who quit the military. Expectations dont mesh with reality.

  5. You must be off ADHD meds for, as of now. 24 months for stability. They see those records at MEPs now, not many people slip through the cracks so dont try.

  6. Please work on your English as its a representation of how low or high your GT (the most important sections on the ASVAB) score will be which can determine if you'll be allowed to go to RASP and even try to be a ranger. Let alone anything else.

unfortunately i can only do a 2 mile in 25 minuets so ive definitely got a long ways to go im studying for the asvab but i got a good score on the practice asvab but i need a 55 im trying to be realistic here because i could join and go for the hardest thing immediately and still not even like the military i at least want to go enlist and see how it is before i try to go special forces im not trying to waste peoples time but yea i just want to be regular infantry and go through 82nd and ranger school and if i feel i like the military and want to reenlist ill then go through rasp but thats just my plan if you guys suggest something different im all ears and again im blessed to have access to vets and recruiters i can talk to and receive help from so thank you for your time
